They're in Cincinnati -- home of Skyline Chili. I can't say I was ever a fan of the stuff. Cinnamon has a very important place in the culinary world, but it just doesn't fit with chili. Rather, it turns chili into something that needs an entirely new set of condiments and beverages. It becomes Cincinnati Meat And Cheese Dish -- served with cider, stuffing, and a slice of pumpkin pie.

Of course, if they spiked the Skyline Chili with Melange instead of cinnamon, Adam Dunn wouldn't have struck out so much.

Completely on topic, apparently a spoonful of cinnamon can not be eaten by itself. You just cough for awhile breathing out cinnamon until you pretty much throw it up.

Take the parking brake off.

Less losing, please. Thanks.

It's scary to think how close the division would be right now if the Brewers hadn't apparently signed up for the Cubs' "No wins in September" strategy.

Cincinnati chili sucks. So does Dusty Baker.

Cubs, stop resembling Cincinnati chili and Dusty Baker.

So I've spent most of the last two days not reading a single word in a paper/online about the Cubs or baseball, and not one minute listening to any sports talk show. All of this in an attempt to quell what was forming as the first hint of aggravation/panic/tilt about this team.

Has the body of Casey McGhee been dredged from the bottom of the Chicago River yet?

I have full faith and confidence that Z just needs some rest, that the offense will turn it around starting tonight, and that we'll look back on this and laugh in a few weeks.

For now.
   7. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:30 PM (#2930510)
Ten pitches, three strikeouts. Sounds like a continuation of Wednesday.

I'm glad for the Reds' sake they were so quickly and easily able to find a replacement for Adam Dunn as "Cubs Killer".
   9. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:41 PM (#2930524)
What the hell is wrong with Aramis?

So I've spent most of the last two days not reading a single word in a paper/online about the Cubs or baseball, and not one minute listening to any sports talk show.

Ditto. So far, the Cubs' performance tonight has justified my inattentiveness, I see.

Well, I'm off to see the Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band. Promises to be more entertaining than the Cubs, which isn't *necessarily* a slam on the Cubs--the Good Reverend puts on a hell of show.
   11. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:59 PM (#2930551)
The Cubs aren't going to ever win that 86th game, are they?
   12. McCoy Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:59 PM (#2930552)
Well, this is another loss.
   13. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:00 PM (#2930553)
Intentionally loading the bases, technically correct strategy or not, so you can face the guy who's slaughtered you all season, seems...not smart.
   14. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2930556)
Also, intentionally loading the bases seems like a stupid thing to do with a guy who's been known to struggle with his command.
   15. McCoy Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2930557)
rain, rain, rain, rain, please!!!!!!!!!!!
   16. McCoy Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:05 PM (#2930562)
So basically we are praying to god that this downpour lasts all night.
   17. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:05 PM (#2930563)
A couple more games like this and I might have to start buying into the whole choke thing. Game isn't over by a long shot, but Ted Lily is going out there and doing the exact opposite of what the Cubs need from a rotation that is without their ace.
   18. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:05 PM (#2930565)
You know, I'm really tired of hearing this "these teams are hard to play against, because they're loose and have nothing to lose" argument. Going into the Houston series, we were 14 GAMES ahead of the Astros. We're 23.5 GAMES ahead of Cincinnati. I don't care how "loose" the Astros or Reds are; we're SO MUCH BETTER than they are that it's absolutely abnormal for them to be beating us like a drum.
   19. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:08 PM (#2930567)
Cubs need to put a run on the board. There's no reason the Cubs shouldn't be STOMPING the Reds, let alone not be putting up any runs, regardless of the inning.
   20. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:10 PM (#2930572)
I agree with Lou; we should definitely use Hoffpauir now in order to save McGehee for a much more critical 7th or 8th inning at bat (if there are any).
   21. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2930577)
Great outing, Ted! Who's next out the chute, Howry?
   22. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2930578)
Hoffpauir couldn't do that in a critical situation, though, I'll bet Lou's thinking.
   23. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2930580)
Right now would be a great time for a Soriano blast.
   24. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:14 PM (#2930581)
Reds are pretty much GIVING the Cubs this run.
   25. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:15 PM (#2930583)
He'll hit a hundred god damn flyballs, except for when one would score a run.
   26. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:18 PM (#2930586)
Hell with it. Teams slump and these guys have been fun to watch almost all year. But they're embarrassing right now. And I'm not going to waste another minute for this team until they give me a sign they're no longer playing with their heads up their asses.
   27. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2930591)
I can't give up on this team tonight, even as badly as they're playing now. Any inning could be the one where they start taking walks, bat around, and put 7 on the board out of nowhere.
   28. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:32 PM (#2930616)
WHAT THE ####
   29. VoodooR Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:34 PM (#2930619)
I've been relatively calm during this slump/bad news fest, but now I'm kinda starting to freak out. What the ####, Cubs?
   30. McCoy Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:40 PM (#2930629)
Screw it, I'm switching over to the Brewers and I'm going to pray they lose.
   31. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2930642)
It's amazing how awful a team can look after looking so unbeatable.
   32. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2930647)
I was on the phone with a friend talking about how shitty they were playing and he wanted to know what the score was. So I checked and saw the bases were loaded with one out. Then I see Lieber gets the second out and I said, "This means Bruce is going to hit a grand slam."
   33. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:46 PM (#2930648)
Time to root for Sabathia's pitch count.
   34. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:47 PM (#2930650)
I've got nothing except to say that 5 months is too long of a stretch to think that 25-30 games over. 500 was a fluke. This week is the fluke. And it will turn back around.

But, yeah, this is just painful right now.
   35. retro-shiite Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:47 PM (#2930651)
At this point, the Cubs should intentionally walk every Reds hitter until it starts raining torrentially.

OK, I'm out.

Great outing, Ted! Who's next out the chute, Howry?

Well, now wouldn't be a bad time at all to bring him in, actually.
   37. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:48 PM (#2930654)
I'd get all irrational and declare that the Cubs won't win the division at this rate, but there's no way they can play like this much longer. //Famous last words
   38. VoodooR Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:49 PM (#2930655)
#### this.
   39. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:50 PM (#2930658)
If they play like this much longer, then they deserve to lose. I doubt that will happen.
   40. McCoy Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:52 PM (#2930661)
Great, the Brewers game keeps flashing back to the Cubs score.
   41. McCoy Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:55 PM (#2930670)
After tonights loss the Cubs will equal their longest losing streak of last year and put them two losses behind their 8 game streak of 2006 when they lost 96 games.
   42. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:56 PM (#2930674)
I guess if anything, this will give the team a chance to see what Guzman's got. At this point, he might start looking like an attractive alternative to the Ted Lillys of this team.

Actually if the Reds wanted to position Lee according to the scouting report, they'd have three shortstops.
   45. McCoy Posted: September 05, 2008 at 09:06 PM (#2930703)
Padres tied it up, woo-hoo!
   46. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2930710)
I know Lilly's been better than his numbers suggests. It just seems like he's good for a nice shelling every few starts.
   47. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2930715)
I'm going to try and be positive (just for the erstwhile Moses): the Cubs ####### suck right now BUT they can't sustain this type of play. They may squeak by to win the division title, but I think we'll agree that their play over the course of the season is a better indication of their overall quality versus this week from hell. That said, it's best to get this #### out of the way and not have it crop up in October. With that in mind, I'm going to seriously question things if we're still having to find silver linings like this in a week's time.
   48. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2930720)
Also, I've conceded tonight's game, but for the love of god, don't get shut out for the third time in four games.

Damn you CC!

Wait, why did Black IBB Kendall to get to Sabathia there?
   54. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 05, 2008 at 09:34 PM (#2930774)
Don't look now, but the Cubs' offense is beginning to show signs of competence.

or not

Not that it matters, but did anyone think Ward wouldn't strike out there? Lou needs to get with the program and realize there are better options than Ward off the bench right now.
   57. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: September 05, 2008 at 09:40 PM (#2930790)
What do you want Walks, he's been getting McGehee in there as much as he can.

Kaz Fukudome still can't hit lefties.
   62. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 10:07 PM (#2930832)
The Fathers are making CC throw a surprising amount of pitches over the last couple of innings. More encouraging is that they're only down one late.
   63. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2930834)
Padres strand a runner at third with just one out. CC *only* at 106 pitches, so expect to see him back out for one more.
   64. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 05, 2008 at 10:25 PM (#2930845)
Somewhere, poor Harvey is having a heart attack. Gagne being Yost's eighth inning guy might be enough to offset the Cubs' no-win September.
   65. VoodooR Posted: September 05, 2008 at 10:40 PM (#2930863)
85 wins might take the division again this year...
