Harang just hasn't been the same since that 4 inning relief appearance.

Back to 31 over .500 today. Strange as it might have sounded two years ago, seeing Harang is just what a slumping Cubs offense needs.

Lets get some more runs, ride Sori when he's hot, and get a serviceable start out of Marshall. Good Luck to the Iowa Cubs in game 5 of their play off series, and sorry about tonight to all you Bears fans (Im not a Colt fan, Im just saying)

Soriano homers right out of the gate.

Pizzle back to the MF'n mo-hizzle, yo.

(Sorry, been helping my friend work on lines for a comedic interpretation of Shakespeare plays as '70's "blaxploitation" films. That and this week's Cubs have made me lose my mind.)

My Indy friends have been trash-talking me all week about the Bears. It sucks because there's nothing I can really say back. If we score double-digit points tonight it'll be a miracle. AND my fantasy football opponent this week has Peyton Manning at QB.

In other words, I REALLY hope the Cubs win today, 'cause tonight is gonna be a double-disaster.

(Come to think of it, a Cubs WS run this year would take us through late October, and then the Blackhawks start a week later...so I won't have to pay attention to the Bears at all this year. Sweet. GO CUBS GO!)

So, McCoy...just out of curiosity, what do you like for the lottery numbers tonight?
   8. McCoy Posted: September 07, 2008 at 01:18 PM (#2931764)
5, 21, 27, 33, 38 14

Fevre just threw his first NYJ TD.

Sean, just remember, "quality starts" rock! I'll take 6 IP, 3 R with a smile today.

Marshall has his command today, should be a good day.

It seems like every year on opening day some QB who expected to do a lot goes down with a big injury. Is it Tom Brady's turn?
   13. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 07, 2008 at 01:34 PM (#2931773)
It would be nice to see the team start taking some pitches and making Harang work. Or, if they like the first-pitch meatballs he's throwing up there so much, to start hitting them hard somewhere.

Oh no! Golden Boy hurt for the Pats?

/couldn't happen to a nicer team

That poor former USC back up QB is in alot of trouble in KC ..... Helps my fantasy team though I have Lawrence Maroney

Reason # 893 to NOT bet on football: the Patriots are nowhere near 14 point favorites over anyone if Matt Cassell is playing instead of Brady. Bet there's a lot of Pats bettors out there who are drinking heavily right now.
   18. Giantandre Posted: September 07, 2008 at 01:52 PM (#2931784)
Cassell is 5 for 6 for 73 yards and a TD
   19. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 07, 2008 at 01:54 PM (#2931787)
Soriano couldn't be timing this hot streak at a better time. It should last for the next week or so, at which point, he'll get icy cold for the next couple of weeks and then, he'll be ready for his next hot streak, just in time for the playoffs.
   20. McCoy Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:03 PM (#2931792)
Phillips is killing himself, it would be a lot healthier for him to just strikeout.

Another Favre TD.

Cassell is 5 for 6 for 73 yards and a TD

Unless Cassell is the next Tom Brady (unlikely) or the Chiefs' D is completely useless (much more likely), I don't see this trend continuing.

Let's take some freakin' pitches this inning, offense!

Come on, Aramis
   23. McCoy Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:10 PM (#2931797)
If the Cubs blow this I'll go crazy
   24. McCoy Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:12 PM (#2931801)
Bases loaded, no outs and Soto is up. We should get at least one run out of this.

All year long we've been stepping on the necks of bad teams/pitchers when we get them down like this. This would be huge if we could do the same today.
   26. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:16 PM (#2931804)
That sucks, but they both hit it hard. Nothing else you can do.

I took the Lions playing the crappy Falcons with their probably crappy rookie QB in my suicide pool this week. Good job so far guys! Clowns.
   27. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:16 PM (#2931805)
At least they tied it, but I'm sure we were all hoping for more. Cubs have had some tough breaks with balls hit to third today. Encarnacion's made at least three pretty nifty plays to prevent singles so far.

Sori! Wow, that must have been a hell of a throw. I didn't think he had a chance to get him once he did that slight crow-hop hesitation.

That'll endear the kids to Dusty. I love Soriano's arm.

   34. strong silence Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:32 PM (#2931820)
Sometimes they are challenging his mind.

Weird idea. Guy on third in a tag up situation. Instead of starting at the bag, the runner starts 2-3 steps from behind the bag. Starts his run a split second before the catch. This way he has a running start when the catch is made.

Legal?

OK, that was seriously weak. This offensive slump is truly inexplicable at this point.

You can tell Marshall is not a favorite of Brenly's.

Speaking of inexplicable, Corey Patterson is getting on base far more than his share this series.
   45. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:44 PM (#2931848)
This is about as excruciating as you can pitch in a game where you've only give up three hits and one run.

Is Marshall Rod Beck's illegitimate son?

Padres finally managed to score a few runs.

He's not a catcher. (Theriot is apparently an honorary catcher.)
   49. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:48 PM (#2931859)
Padres are up 5-0 in the third. If the Cubs ever decide to cash in on some of these scoring chances, they might be able to put a game in between themselves and the Brew Crew today.
   50. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:50 PM (#2931863)
Micah doesn't much to show for his last two starts, but I hope Lou is at least paying attention to some of the good hacks Micah's still getting.

Damn. I didn't think that was gone, but I thought it would have gotten over Corey's head. That Patterson is a nice little fielder. Too bad he can't get on base against anyone EXCEPT THE CUBS!

I'm really unimpressed.(He really lacks any manner of plate discipline.) And his defense in RF is abysmal.

Agreed. I'm surprised at how hack-tastic he is. I know Harang's throwing a lot of balls in the zone today, but still.
   55. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:00 PM (#2931876)
This has turned into a pitcher's duel in which neither pitcher has looked very good.
   56. Colin Wyers Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:06 PM (#2931886)
Harang can't find the strikezone with a map right now.
   57. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:06 PM (#2931887)
I love the irritated look on Lou's face almost every time he needs to come out of the dugout and check on one of his players.

   59. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:10 PM (#2931894)
Gotta love Cedeno's reaction as soon as he popped up from that head-first slide.
   60. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:11 PM (#2931896)
And of course in this bizarro week, it would be Ronny Cedeno who breaks up the tie. And De Sad and Marshall to be the pitchers to come up big when needed the most.
   61. McCoy Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:12 PM (#2931900)
So Soto and Theriot are banged up now? Great.
   62. retro-shiite Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:13 PM (#2931901)
Soto just got hit on the elbow, and Theriot's under the weather. I don't think there's a problem.
   63. Colin Wyers Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:13 PM (#2931902)
Theriot is "under the weather," officially.

Which - I mean correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't that ballplayer speak for hungover?
   64. retro-shiite Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:14 PM (#2931904)
isn't that ballplayer speak for hungover?

Oh, it's not just ballplayer speak.
   65. McCoy Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:15 PM (#2931905)
So who is going to be the reliever
   66. Stevis Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:16 PM (#2931908)
Weird idea. Guy on third in a tag up situation. Instead of starting at the bag, the runner starts 2-3 steps from behind the bag. Starts his run a split second before the catch. This way he has a running start when the catch is made.

Explicitly illegal.

But not for going out of the baseline, just by being specifically listed. There is no "baseline" between the bags that the runners must adhere to--they define their baseline by where they are when someone starts to make a play on them. If they want to run out the outfield grass between first and second on a double, it's legal (but stupid).

An example of this would be a guy who runs past the bag at first, sees the throw get by the firstbasemen, then breaks for second. The three feet or so he can't leave is not directly between the bags, but from where he is when someone has the ball near him and the bag.)
   67. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:17 PM (#2931911)
Does a steal there make any sense with a pitcher who's basically hitting The Bull right now?
   68. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:18 PM (#2931921)
Shame. Lee struck that ball well.
   69. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:19 PM (#2931923)
Never mind- DLee swinging at the first pitch from a tiring pitcher who's hitting The Bull is even dumber.
   70. retro-shiite Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:19 PM (#2931924)
Of course. Bags loaded, Harang's gassed and has no control at all, and Lee grounds to short on the first pitch. He sucks.
   71. McCoy Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:19 PM (#2931928)
Geezus Lee!
   72. retro-shiite Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:20 PM (#2931935)
6-0 Padres, if anyone cares. Young with a no-no through 4.
