CIN (28-22) at CHC (18-31) - 2:20 PM EDT

CIN: Ramirez (2-3, 3.72 ERA)
CHC: Wood (0-1, 6.30 ERA)

Will Kerry Wood be dealt before the deadline? And would such a trade even bring back anything worth having?

how will the cubs lose today? im guessing wild pitch will allow the winning run to score.....in the second inning

I think today will be one of those classic games where a young pitcher no one's ever heard of holds them to 2 hits in 7 innings.

Meanwhile, 4 runs in 5 IP from Wood as he struggles with his control again.

Well, we knew Womack would be in there again after yesterday's performance. It's a pleasant surprise not seeing Neifi in there as well.
   5. Neil M Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:35 PM (#2042327)
Bottom of the 9th, tied game, Cubs load the bases with 3 4-pitch walks.

Beifi pinch-hits, swings at a ball that has already bounced twice on its way in and grounds into a triple play. Dusty says it was a smart, agressive play. Neifi says that, in the same situation, he'd do the same thing again. Nobody doubts him.

Beifi

...you know....

Bottom of the 9th, tied game,

The most implausible part of my scenario.
   8. Hendry's Wad of Cash (UCCF) Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:43 PM (#2042348)
The problem with your scenario is that I don't think the Cubs have drawn 3 unintentional 4-pitch walks all season. And it's a good thing too, because if you draw a lot of walks it makes it a lot harder to outhit the other team and still get beat (cf. Friday and Saturday).

Beifi

Is this like when Jerry used to call George "Biff" because he was such a loser?
   10. Neil M Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:54 PM (#2042361)
In a neat role-reversal, the announvers phone the dugout during the game to complain about the lousy play they're being expected to describe.

91% humidity at 85 degrees -- wow, that's humid.
   17. Meatwad Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:23 PM (#2042416)
the cubs have only 34 home runs. how sad
   18. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:25 PM (#2042420)
It's also wrong. I just looked it up and it's 88 and 47% humidity. A merely unpleasantly sticky 66 degree dewpoint.
   19. Neil M Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:27 PM (#2042424)
Unless the gun is seriously off, Wood is getting his velocity back. Hitting 93-96 with the fastball.
   20. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:32 PM (#2042435)
Tony Womack will sparkplug the Cubs to a .400 win percentage.
   21. Hendry's Wad of Cash (UCCF) Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:32 PM (#2042438)
Is Womack going to come in and be Neifi 2004 - hit great for a month, and then we'll be stuck with him through 2008?
   22. Hendry's Wad of Cash (UCCF) Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:36 PM (#2042447)
I love all this talk about back-to-back homers. With the wind gusting out yesterday we couldn't even get 1 HR.

They should change that contest - if the Cubs get HRs in back-to-back weeks, the fan wins.
   23. Neil M Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:43 PM (#2042454)
Is Womack going to come in and be Neifi 2004

He'll stay hot until Lee comes back and the Cubs unload Walker, then....

Much like happy families, unreliable starting pitchers are all the same.

I see Cubs fans' commentaries on Kerry Wood, and even with Wood's long track record of success, he seems to be the Cubs equivalent of Gavin Floyd at this point.
   25. Meatwad Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:53 PM (#2042469)
how did they get 2 runs
   26. Hendry's Wad of Cash (UCCF) Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:56 PM (#2042473)
Womack double, Walker singled him in, then Ramirez hit a high pop into no man's land and by the time the Reds decided to pick it up Walker had scored.

Gavin who? Wood has a much longer history of unreliability than Gavin Floyd.
   28. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: May 29, 2006 at 03:03 PM (#2042478)
how did they get 2 runs

Jesus descended from heaven in the bottom of the first, and levitated 20 feet above the field. Then, each time the Cubs got a ball in play, he started zapping the Reds defensive players with lightning bolts. No one has any idea how to score it.

I see the Cubs in Felipe Lopez's future. Crap throw.

Tony Womack makes things happen. There's no denying it.

Well, his signing made me feel a little nauseated. So he did make that happen.
   33. Meatwad Posted: May 29, 2006 at 03:19 PM (#2042500)
#### walker is hurt isnt he?
   34. Andere HUSSEIN Richtingen, Socialist Posted: May 29, 2006 at 03:22 PM (#2042504)
And the Cubs are finding a way to lose this one.
   35. Hendry's Wad of Cash (UCCF) Posted: May 29, 2006 at 03:23 PM (#2042507)
Now this inning smacks of the Cubs - grounder almost injures a player, bunt single, wild pitch.

Unfortunately, I see Felipe Lopez is in the Cubs future.

On a day of passed balls and wild pitches what's the odds we see Williamson come in with a man on third?
   38. Neil M Posted: May 29, 2006 at 03:52 PM (#2042540)
Aardsna warming up. That should screw things up.
   39. Neil M Posted: May 29, 2006 at 04:13 PM (#2042563)
Apologies to Mr. Aaedsma. That was a decent inning.

Just to prove that I am not completely anti-Dusty:

I like this move, bringing Dempster in in the 8th.
   41. Neil M Posted: May 29, 2006 at 04:37 PM (#2042578)
And it paid off there.
   42. 100 Years is Nothing Posted: May 29, 2006 at 04:40 PM (#2042580)
Dusty probably thought it was the ninth.
   43. Neil M Posted: May 29, 2006 at 04:45 PM (#2042582)
As always, Hairston does the stupid rhing.
   44. Brandon in MO (for America!) Posted: May 29, 2006 at 04:48 PM (#2042583)
The best Cubs lineup (of the starting 9 today) according to This Website is..

Todd Walker, Michael Barrett, Ronny Cedeno, Jacque Jones, Matt Murton, Aramis Ramirez, Juan Pierre, Kerry Wood, and Tony Womack.

The worst Cubs lineup..

Wood, Pierre, Jones, Womack, Cedeno, Walker, Murton, Barrett, Ramirez..

darn.. Pierre was so close to being the worst possible leadoff man.

And the site says that those 9 can be expected to get 4 runs a game.
   45. Neil M Posted: May 29, 2006 at 04:54 PM (#2042586)
That was a HR.
   46. Neil M Posted: May 29, 2006 at 05:03 PM (#2042588)
Brief shot at the end there of a guy wearing a t-shirt that reads:

Fire Dusty
Fire Hendry
Fire McPhail

The camera didn't linger.

I can't get that Lineup Analysis thing to work. It just outputs whatever I put in, whether the pitcher is listed first or last.
   49. Brandon in MO (for America!) Posted: May 29, 2006 at 05:20 PM (#2042606)
Crispix, you need to put in the OBP and SLG of the players involved.
