I'm feeling much better about the team now that they're winning some games on the road. Time to keep taking care of business. I'm interested in what Rich has, since he was without his best stuff yesterday.

since he was without his best stuff yesterday

You mean last time out by yesterday? I'm also curious. Still the line wasn't bad, last time. At all.

Do the Cubs see Volquez this series? Ah, I see they do not. Arroyo and Harang follow.
   4. Mayonnaise Savant (DTM) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 11:48 AM (#2908366)
Is the Reds defense that awful, or are all the pitchers but Volquez that bad?
   5. Mayonnaise Savant (DTM) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 11:49 AM (#2908367)
And by "pitcher" I mean "starter".
   6. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2008 at 12:46 PM (#2908428)
Ah yes, last time out. That's what I get for posting only minutes after waking up from a night of very deep sleep.
   7. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2008 at 12:46 PM (#2908430)
By the way, David Ross got released. That's not big news in and of itself, but he always seemed to homer off the Cubs.
   8. VoodooR Posted: August 19, 2008 at 12:50 PM (#2908436)
I honestly cannot remember the last time the Cubs lost a series. Without taking the time to look it up, it seems like they've sandwiched some four-game sweeps in between a string of taking 2 out of 3 from teams. Me likes.

Still the line wasn't bad, last time. At all.

A walk an inning is not good. And only two K's. Of course he gave up zero runs and only two hits. I'll take it, but it was his season high walks and season low K's.

Time for more pillaging.

Well said.

After all the recent days off, this is the beginning of a stretch of 16 straight game. Only one good team in that stretch (Phi), but the games are in Wrigley. Hopefully the Astros keep playing like they're in the race this week against Milwaukee.
   10. Meatwad Posted: August 19, 2008 at 02:15 PM (#2908506)
the next 9 are agaisnt crappy teams, i fully expect the cubs to win at least 7 of them. right now they need to increase the pressure on milwaukee and hopefully bury them in the standing going into september

Pedal to the metal.

I honestly cannot remember the last time the Cubs lost a series.

Been a while. Think the last series loss was in Arizona, and the last one they didn't win outright was the 2-2 split at home against Florida. Since then--4 of 4 at MIL, 2 of 3 vs PIT, 2 of 3 vs HOU, 2 of 3 vs STL, 3 of 3 at ATL, 2 of 3 at FLA. Not a bad month. And I'm still not satisfied...
   13. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 03:06 PM (#2908563)

To revisit the "depleted" bit--the Reds and Pirates are depleted in the wake of the trade deadline (well, the Bucs got some guys who're contributing already--Karstens, Moss, Andy LaRoche). The Nats? Well, they were never really, uh, "pleted" to begin with. (How'd we lose 2 of 3 to them, again?)
   14. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 03:25 PM (#2908599)
The Cubs could use a home sweep--they haven't had one since the White Sox series, which was their 4th home sweep in a row. The Cubs were a Nate McLouth home run and a Shawn Estes (!) win away from 7 straight home sweeps from early May to mid-June.
   15. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 19, 2008 at 03:37 PM (#2908619)
Not a bad month. And I'm still not satisfied...

I feel the same way. I really wanted to win Saturday night's game, and the pieces were all there, they just didn't drive in the guys standing on the bases. I know games like that happen, but this team takes advantage of those opportunities.

And it's not just Buford, who I imagine has his tongue firmly planted in his cheek. For once, I'm finding his schtick enjoyable. He's usually just absurd, but this time he's hitting both parts of the ridiculous/entertaining combo he's aiming for. It's a shame his argument is being taken at face value, but who am I to ruin the fun?
   19. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 19, 2008 at 04:27 PM (#2908666)

Going to the game tonight, retro?
   22. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 04:48 PM (#2908708)
Going to the game tonight, retro?

No, because I listed tonight's tickets on StubHub a while back and forgot I'd done so, until I got an email from StubHub saying they'd sold. I'll often list tickets a couple months in advance at inflated prices to see if anybody'll pay it, but they usually won't bite until within 2 weeks of the game, when the price has dropped (and I'll often decide to attend the game before then in any case, in which case I just delete the listing). Well, somebody decided to pay premium a month in advance for tonight's tickets. Whatever--it's money in my pocket, and I'm going tomorrow.
   23. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 19, 2008 at 04:51 PM (#2908715)
That pays for beer to watch the game tonight at the very, very least.
   24. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 04:53 PM (#2908717)
Yeah, although I'm going into "conserve money" mode for the time being. This has been a year of copious spending for me. Not sure there's going to be a lot allocated for six-dollar pisswater.
   25. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 19, 2008 at 05:02 PM (#2908726)
Its funny you mention that. We should be in a conserve mode right now, as we've been going through The Summer of Spending Piles of Money (mostly in the last two weeks). But, instead we are planning our visit to Chicago at the end of the month, where we will again continue to stimulate the economy by spending our dollars as fast as we had made it.

We should get together one of those nights.
   26. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 19, 2008 at 05:05 PM (#2908731)
I'm definitely trying to be in conserve mode right now, with a wedding and house purchase in my future. I just got a new job, so I feel like I've got extra money. But I'm planning a trip to NYC in September to see Yankee and Shea Stadiums before they get burned to the ground. Finally found Yankee tickets today - 3 seats, $500. I wish we had the foresight to purchase these tickets when they first went on sale.

Jack, let us know next time you're down here. If you mean the end of August, that's next week, right?
   27. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 19, 2008 at 05:09 PM (#2908738)
I think we will be in town from the 29th to the 1st or something like that.
   28. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 05:32 PM (#2908787)
That's the weekend of the Phillies series, so I'll be around. You know where I live.

Yeah, in the last 12 months, I've bought 3 fairly pricey guitars, and cataract surgery for my dog. It'll be a while before I'm taking any major vacations.
   29. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 19, 2008 at 05:35 PM (#2908789)
Yes, the Phillies series. I'd like to think its the series that will pretty much drive the nails in the coffin. There's a lot of work to do between now and then.

It would be nice to see Houston do something tonight and tomorrow.

Maddox to the Dodgers is a done deal.

Anyhoo, have any of you guys been to the Newberry Library? My friend is something of a rockstar in the world of cartography there, and I was thinking it might see if he can give us a tour. Napolean's maps that sort of thing.
   33. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 06:25 PM (#2908863)
Maddox to the Dodgers is a done deal.

I know Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones suck, but acquiring a 60-year-old Garry Maddox seems to be grasping at straws.

   36. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:28 PM (#2908970)
I guess I can post something. I just never have anything that interesting to say. I will have a slow day tomorrow, so I'll try to come up with something just so we have something posted. I don't want to do any actual research or anything, and I am slightly worried about jinxing anything so I don't want to assume anything either.
   37. Meatwad Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:37 PM (#2909003)
iv got no problem with jixing things, but even then some recaps of things going on over the last few weeks and whats what down in the minors wouldnt be too bad, just a request though, ifone of you does it it would be great if not then there isnt #### i can do about it
   38. Pops Freshenmeyer Posted: August 19, 2008 at 07:37 PM (#2909005)
A minor league report would be interesting and wouldn't rehash things already discussed elsewhere on the site.

If anything screams "playoff contender," it's batting Darin Erstad leadoff against CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets.

And how!
   47. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:15 PM (#2909095)
Cueto's delivery is not smooth. I'm not a pitching mechanics expert, but I foresee arm problems down the road if he stays with this arm action.
   48. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:16 PM (#2909099)
Or stays with this manager.
   49. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:18 PM (#2909108)
Well, in true Brewers fashion, they score a run with none out in the first and lose a baserunner in the process.

harden is looking pretty good tonight
   51. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2909124)
This Harden kid can throw the ball a little.
   52. VoodooR Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2909127)
Good I like the 10K/G Harden better than the 2K/G Harden.
   53. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:28 PM (#2909132)
Nothing wrong with Harden's velocity tonight. He's been at 94/95 regularly.

ARam's having a rough few days.
   54. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:31 PM (#2909139)
Chrissakes, Geo. Guy hits a batter and gives up a 4 pitch walk, take a pitch.

Or if you don't don't GIDP.
   55. Meatwad Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:33 PM (#2909146)
he took the first pitch 90 mph right down the middle
###'s at bat was so quick i didnt even notice that he got out
   56. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:37 PM (#2909155)
It'd be just my luck if Harden throws a perfecto in the game I accidentally sell my tickets to.
   57. Meatwad Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:38 PM (#2909157)
32 pitches through 3 for harden with 5k's looking damn good today

   59. SteveM. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2909178)
I am late because I went running, forgetting their was a game. Jack-the Newberry is an incredible place. I did some research there a few years ago.
   60. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2909179)
Good evening, gents. My TVAnts is hardly working, so my grasp of tonight’s game will be even less firm than usual. Still, there is no such thing as a jinx. Especially not on the internet.
   61. SteveM. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:46 PM (#2909183)
Well that was an inning of crappy baserunning.
   62. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:47 PM (#2909188)
Cubs raised bruce's terrible D with 2 baserunning gaffes.

f u k 's

amazing baserunning there guys

The hell was that?
   65. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:50 PM (#2909204)

   66. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:50 PM (#2909205)
Gameday didn't know how to relay all of that Alou baserunning. What exactly happened?
   67. Meatwad Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:51 PM (#2909211)
dero out at second on a grounder to the short stop, sori picked off at first
   68. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:51 PM (#2909214)
Soriano ground ball to Keppinger, DeRosa wandered off the bag and was thrown out at 2nd. Then Soriano was picked off.

Though, I think DeRosa was in safely at 2nd.
   69. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:52 PM (#2909220)
Michael Bourne of all people just hit a game-tying triple in Milwaukee.
   70. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:52 PM (#2909223)
Just cause Dusty's back, we have to run like his Cubs teams?

If we didn't, he'd probably think it was illegal and play the game under protest.
   71. Meatwad Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:53 PM (#2909226)
and ssr i agree with you on that one, he looked in.
   72. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 19, 2008 at 08:53 PM (#2909227)
Only thing that mattered was that it wasn’t Theriot’s fault. Seems to me that that’s anything anyone cares about. Maybe that’s just the Wrigleyville23 guys, though.
   73. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2909248)
I like the potential of getting this lead-off double in much better than the third-inning one.
   74. SteveM. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2909250)
The Cubs will break through soon, they are hitting Cueto hard.
   75. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:03 PM (#2909261)
Gah. C'mon, TOFU. This wasting baserunners is getting old.
   76. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:05 PM (#2909271)
Well, that sucked.
   77. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:05 PM (#2909273)
Not again with the stranded runners. Yes, it’s the Reds. There’s time, there’s opportunities. There’s even Dusty. But for ####’s sake! Don’t strand a runner on third with less than two outs.
   78. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:06 PM (#2909276)
Man. That's shitty.
   79. SteveM. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:08 PM (#2909294)
I am glad to see the spirit of Arne Harris still lives in the Cubs broadcast. They just showed two incredibly hot women.
   80. SteveM. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:10 PM (#2909303)
I hope the Reds keep giving Harden easy innings like that.
   81. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2909308)
That Lee catch was sweet. Doesn’t make up for all the double plays, but it was sweet.
   82. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:12 PM (#2909314)
Shouldn’t we score, though? Scoring isn’t frowned upon, is it? It’s encouraged, right?
   83. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:14 PM (#2909318)
Leadoff triple for The Don. Let's see how they blow this opportunity.
   84. SteveM. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:14 PM (#2909319)
Wow, so far this season i have seen Soto hit an inside the park home run and now a triple. I was afraid he might need oxygen to get into 3rd.
   85. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:14 PM (#2909320)
DON
   86. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:15 PM (#2909322)

   89. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:17 PM (#2909330)
Brian Moehler has allowed 10 baserunners in 3.2 innings in Milwaukee.
   90. SteveM. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:17 PM (#2909332)
Harden may prove as big as a setal for Hendry as Aramis is. He has been everything I hoped for and more.
   91. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2909334)
Post 83 is way too pessimistic, retro. Straighten out that attitude buster.
   92. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2909335)
Does Moehler pitch well against anybody but the Cubs?
   93. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2909338)
Well, I think Gallagher's going to be worth a lot more than any of the used bandaids and fingernail clippings the Cubs gave up for Ramirez/Lofton, but yeah, Harden/Gaudin was a coup.
   94. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2909339)
Terrible ####### swing.
   95. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2909340)
Goddammit.
   96. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2909341)
This doesn't bode well.

If he ####### has Harden bunt him to 2nd on this, I'm gonna be pissed.
   98. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:22 PM (#2909345)
For all his virtues as a pitcher, Harden has shown me no indication of having any ####### clue what he's doing with a bat in his hands.
   99. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2909348)
I guess if nothing else, they're getting that pitch count up there. But they've still blown some incredible scoring chances to this point.
   100. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2909350)
Wow. Guess that worked.
