Well, it worked, in a blind squirrel sort of way.

Like most things in Dusty's managerial career.

If it works Retro, you should patent it and make a fortune.

**whistles absent-mindedly**
   204. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:21 PM (#2909593)
That was an odd attempt by Phillips on that.

I bow to your greatness Retro. Fukudome comes through!

Harang was pushed back. The cubs are facing Fogg. Or Wells. Whichever one of those shitbirds is on this team.
   207. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:21 PM (#2909596)
Wells. Kip? I know it's not David...
   208. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2909597)
Fogg. Wells flamed out with Colorado earlier this year.

Wait--Arroyo's tomorrow, right?
   210. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2909599)
Let Howry pitch the 9th if they score another?

Breaking News! The bigfoot found in GA was a HOAX! This is shocking!

I am shocked by that! And can you believe Corey Patterson went 0-for-3 tonight?!?!?!
   212. SteveM. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:23 PM (#2909601)
Yes, the slugging Arroyo is tomorrow night.
   213. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:23 PM (#2909602)
Uh--TLR just pinch hit Joe Mather for Ankiel against Sean Burnett with the tying run on. Huh?
   214. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:24 PM (#2909605)
Let Howry pitch the 9th if they score another?

You mean another four?
   215. SteveM. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:25 PM (#2909606)
Wood has already warmed up. I'd just pitch him.
   216. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:25 PM (#2909607)
Even more Huh-worthy, right before that TLR pinch hit for SKIP
   217. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:26 PM (#2909612)
I'll assume Wood was already warming up, thus his appearance in a five-run game?

Heh--you beat me to it. I just noticed that.
   219. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:29 PM (#2909617)
On your feet.
   220. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:32 PM (#2909621)
W!!!

A season-high 29 over .500. And if Houston holds on, a season-high 6-game lead.
   221. SteveM. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:32 PM (#2909622)
Go Cubs Go! The Cubbies win again.

   223. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:33 PM (#2909624)
Now that's a home victory. Good work, gents. Let's hope that Astros' pen holds things down.
   224. SteveM. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:34 PM (#2909625)
Would Ron Santo's heart be able to survive the Cubs winning in the postseason?

And the Magic Number is down to...

(Too soon?)

27 outs facing 30 batters, shocked that something like that could happen to a Dusty Baker managed team.
   227. A Surfeit of Peaches Graham (SdeB) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:36 PM (#2909631)
The Harden trade was good, but if they had made it four days earlier, it would have been great.

?

Sorry for the late follow-up. The Cubs traded for Harden three days after he reached 5 years service time. That means he can demand a trade after the season and the Cubs must do so or allow him to become a free agent. Otherwise, they could pick up the option on his contract free and clear. (They still can do so, but only if he doesn't want to be traded).
   228. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:36 PM (#2909632)
Stretch run acquisition Latroy Hawkins in for Houston.

That's right up there with the GA Bigfoot being fake.

With nary a base-clogging walk.

Josh Fogg on short rest tomorrow? Well that could be fun.
   232. SteveM. Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:37 PM (#2909636)
Tomorrow's game is on WCIU which means that EI won't carry the Cubs feed and I will be stuck with the Reds announcers.
   233. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:38 PM (#2909637)
Arroyo's tomorrow, Fogg Thursday. I think. Well, those could be fun, too.

Don't know about you, but I'm gonna pour myself a celebratory bourbon and stick around while watching the MIL and STL games to end.

OK--THAT makes sense then, for the good vs. great distinction.

You don't think he'll demand a trade, do you?
   235. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:40 PM (#2909643)
Still 5-2 HOU top 9, 1-0 PIT top 9.

Why the hell is Geoff Blum playing SS for the Astros? He has the range of a statue.

I picked the Cardinals vs. Ian Snell in my MLB.com "Beat the Streak" team today. This would explain why Snell morphed into Cy Young tonight, and probably why TRL is channeling Jim Essian.

I don't know. He could use it as leverage to get the Cubs to decline his option year and sign him to a bigger contract.
   239. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:42 PM (#2909647)
I believe it's Arroyo tomorrow, Fogg Thursday.

Tied with the Rays for best record in baseball now.
   240. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:46 PM (#2909651)
According to Yahoo, that's 2 botched fielder's choices in a row for the Cardinals??
   241. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:47 PM (#2909653)
Don't the Angels still have a better record than Tampa?

3-0 Bucs.
   242. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:50 PM (#2909658)
And a throwing error by the Cards on a SF. What the hell's going on there?
   243. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 19, 2008 at 10:54 PM (#2909661)
Tampa has beaten the Angels the last 2 games, so they've passed them by a half game.

The implosion that we've been expecting all season is finally underway?

The implosion that we've been expecting all season is finally underway?

Perhaps.

I'm not sure how I feel about the Rays passing the Angels.

Brewers lose! The Cards are about to.

Brewers lose. 4-0 Bucs, bottom 9.

Ok, I'll say it (I've been keeping it on a Post-It on my cubicle wall at work since Opening Day, so if it's a jinx, I've been doing it all season and it doesn't seem to be working too well).

The Magic Number is 31.
   249. retro-shiite Posted: August 19, 2008 at 11:11 PM (#2909675)
No Cub team since 1945 has been more than 32 games over .500 at any point in the season. The Cubs can finish 34+ over by going 21-16 or better the rest of the way.
