Losing a series to the Reds at home isn't acceptable, so the Cubs win today, right?
   2. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 21, 2008 at 11:26 AM (#2911447)
A few things need to happen in this game:

1. Z needs to bounce back from his last couple of poor outings and throw a good game. Cincinnati's been a bit of a bane for him, but with Dunn gone, that's a big help. Dunn's probably second only to Jason Bay in how hard he hits Zambrano.

2. Offense needs to pound Fogg. Back to back low scoring games against well below average pitchers would not be a good thing.

3. Cubs win - losing two of three to the depleted Reds (and Dusty Baker's Reds, at that) would leave me feeling a little, uh, depleted. Of course, if the team satisfies points 1 and 2, this one takes care of itself.
   3. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 11:48 AM (#2911462)
The offense has been pedestrian four straight games; other then the two monster innings (the 8-run burst on Sunday, and the 4-run inning to put Tuesday's game away), they've scored a grand total of 4 runs. That needs to change.

If Z's going to get back on track, no better time than against a sucktastic offense like Cincy's.
   4. Meatwad Posted: August 21, 2008 at 11:51 AM (#2911468)
last night i was in an arguement with my 2 friends trying to tell them that dunn isnt garbage and while yeah he mostly just hits the #### out of the ball the fact that he walks and has a decent obp makes him valuable. they just contended that all he does is hit home runs and strike out, i eventually gave up just cant convince ignorence what is truth
   5. Meatwad Posted: August 21, 2008 at 12:57 PM (#2911552)
36 games left 26 are against teams that currently are over .500
8 are against philly and the mets (two 4 game series), 6 are aginst houston, 6 against stl, and 6 against milwaukee. and starting sept 9th all the remaining games are against NY(4), MIL(6), STL(6) and HOU(3). going to be a fun strech run, does any team have a schedual like this to close out the year?
   6. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 21, 2008 at 01:10 PM (#2911563)
That's a tough stretch of games, to be sure, especially since many of them are on the road, but I feel pretty confident that this team won't wilt down the stretch.

I think that the Mets and Phillies are both favorable matchups for the Cubs and we've seen that they can handle Milwaukee and St. Louis just fine, both at home and on the road.

To be totally honest, I think that Houston will give them the most problems out of that bunch.
   7. Meatwad Posted: August 21, 2008 at 01:56 PM (#2911622)
i would also add that 19 games are on the road with 3 at cinci, then houston and stlouis then home against MIL and STL then on the road for 4 against the mets and onto milwaukee for 3 to finish the year. they need to take care of buisness now so they can build a lead big enough to survive that strech of 16 of 22 games on the road to finish it out
   8. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 01:58 PM (#2911628)
You forgot "Petal to the medal," old man. Alzheimer's kicking in?
   9. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:00 PM (#2911633)
I don't see them wilting either. Lou is a tough ############, and I think he has built this team in that vein. I think he's got a great grasp on the vagaries of the starting pitching, his bullpen use is predictable (and I hope it holds up). They need to win today.
   10. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:02 PM (#2911635)
Blanco in for Soto today, batting 8th. Otherwise, it's the "A" lineup.
   11. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:04 PM (#2911640)
Kosuke really needs to get his #### together. He's a total drag on the offense right now.
   12. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:04 PM (#2911641)
As much as I like Soto, I like him getting a rest now and then and Blanco has been on an odd power jag, so who knows.
   13. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:05 PM (#2911643)
Agreed, Moses. He's kind of pissing me off, and I was so high on him and his signing. There's something about his swing that I hate. His lead should does something I've never seen before.
   14. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:22 PM (#2911668)
WTF is this country music playing when they're taking the field?
   15. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:22 PM (#2911670)
Alright, Boys, lets put up the W flag today.
   16. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:23 PM (#2911671)
Wow. Cory Patterson is terrible these days. I can't help but think the Cubs seriously ###### him over.
   17. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:25 PM (#2911673)
This isn't good for my hypertension.
   18. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:26 PM (#2911675)
I can't help but think the Cubs seriously ###### him over.

Maybe, maybe not. Either way, he's not too smart going back to Dusty for more. So he doesn't think they did, which is what really matters.
   19. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:28 PM (#2911681)
That first pitch to Bruce is the first time Z has topped 90mph.
   20. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:29 PM (#2911686)
Christ Henry, you have to catch that.
   21. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:30 PM (#2911691)
His command sounds off, but the low velocity is upsetting.
   22. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:31 PM (#2911692)
Nice play by DeRosa. I don't know what to think of Z so far. The stuff looked good but all over the place.
   23. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:32 PM (#2911693)
He's gone 92/93, but mostly 88/89.
   24. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:36 PM (#2911698)
This stupid job. I've only got a couple of days left, but I'm in today for a couple of random meetings. I should have just said no and stayed home to watch the game. I'll probably catch the last 3 innings.
   25. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:36 PM (#2911700)
Is Fogg trying to prove how much more he sucks? Cubs need to actually get some hits with guys on today.
   26. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:38 PM (#2911701)
Attaboy, Teh Riots. Now cash in. Lee hasn't had a hit with runners in scoring position since the Clinton administration.
   27. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:39 PM (#2911704)
#### you, Lee. Seriously.
   28. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:39 PM (#2911705)
Wow, a GIDP for Lee--who'd've thought. At least the run scored.

Seriously--is it in Lee's contract that he has to hit third? Because that's about the constant in this lineup all year. And Lee's sucking canal water has been a constant for weeks.
   29. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:40 PM (#2911706)
What's the new gig, Moses?
   30. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:40 PM (#2911707)
Utterly shocked.
   31. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:41 PM (#2911711)
Getting out of public accounting. Still doing Internal Audit. In Rosemont, but right off the Blue Line so still pretty convenient for me.

We should try to get an after work S&B;meetup for next week since I won't be in the city anymore.
   32. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:41 PM (#2911713)
Ach du lieber--Heinrich Weiss!!

I just like saying Hank's new nickname. Moses, you missed out on his re-christening on Saturday.
   33. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:42 PM (#2911715)
Yeah, again, sorry about that. I really wanted to come.
   34. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:42 PM (#2911717)
Yeah, keep me posted. Been a while since we did S&B;. I'm in the office all next week, as far as I know.
   35. Evan Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:44 PM (#2911720)
What'd Hank do to earn the German moniker? Did he invade Poland?
   36. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:44 PM (#2911721)
I'll email scotto and see if he can make it down one of those days. Then I'll spread the word.
   37. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:45 PM (#2911723)
In Rosemont, but right off the Blue Line so still pretty convenient for me.

Cumberland stop? I worked in the Tru Value building right there for about six months back in '03.

Wow, Derrek's only hit into 4 (now 5) DPs since July 1, so he's actually improving there. Doesn't seem like it, though.
   38. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:45 PM (#2911725)
So the Cubs' last 2 losses are the Reds' second win all year when scoring 2 runs or less, and the Marlins' first such win after 68 straight losses.
   39. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:45 PM (#2911726)
That was a nice pitch on the check swing. Lets figure it out, Carlos.
   40. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:46 PM (#2911727)
DLee should have caught that. Its tricky but very catchable.
   41. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:47 PM (#2911729)
No, the Rosemont stop.
   42. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:48 PM (#2911733)
What'd Hank do to earn the German moniker? Did he invade Poland?

Nein, mein Freund!

Andere Richtingen and I were messing around with various translations of Hank's name ("Henri Blanc," etc.) on Saturday, and since we were drinking Spaten beer out of steins, we worked our way to German. Then, we called him that just before he homered, after which we raised our glasses and said "Ein Prosit"!

Blanco invading Poland would be awesome. I don't know why--it just would.
   43. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:48 PM (#2911734)
That felt better.
   44. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:49 PM (#2911736)
I'll email scotto and see if he can make it down one of those days. Then I'll spread the word.

Cool.
   45. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:52 PM (#2911740)
Clutchboy! Man, he's been the entire team the last 2 days.
   46. Evan Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:52 PM (#2911741)
Well, at least DeRosa isn't sucking.
   47. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:52 PM (#2911742)
Clutchy McClutchClutchstein!
   48. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:55 PM (#2911745)
Ach--Heinrich Weiss siegte nicht.
   49. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:57 PM (#2911747)
Feck's sake. He's gonna walk Fogg.
   50. isaacc7 Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:58 PM (#2911750)
Is gameday not working for anyone else?
   51. Evan Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:58 PM (#2911751)
Is there some reason why he can't find the strike zone with a map and compass?
   52. Evan Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:59 PM (#2911754)
working here.
   53. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 02:59 PM (#2911755)
GameDay's working strangely. I have to manually advance the ticker thing from one inning to the next. Good thing I've got the radio.
   54. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:01 PM (#2911759)
Here's the summary, Z is going 3-2 with everyone.
   55. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:01 PM (#2911760)
Christ--another walk. They're making Z work. Somebody remind Dusty that's a counterproductive strategy.
   56. Evan Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:01 PM (#2911761)
At the rate Z's going, he'll be lucky to make it through 5.
   57. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:02 PM (#2911763)
Well, that helps.
   58. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:02 PM (#2911766)
Actually, he's only at 45 pitches through 3, which is kind of amazing considering how many deep counts he's had.
   59. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:03 PM (#2911767)
Indeed. That helps a lot.
   60. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:04 PM (#2911770)
Yahoo's only got Z at 45 pitches. That's not bad.
   61. SouthSideRyan(CASEY'S GONE!!) Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:05 PM (#2911771)
I owe retro an 8-ball.
   62. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:05 PM (#2911772)
Oh hell yes.
   63. Pops Freshenmeyer Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:05 PM (#2911773)
I like Carlos Zambrano.
   64. Evan Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:05 PM (#2911775)
I love that big monkey.
   65. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:06 PM (#2911776)
Unfucking believable!
   66. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:08 PM (#2911781)
Lee still sucks. Film at 11.
   67. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:09 PM (#2911783)
So I missed another Z homer? Is he concentrate on his hitting so much that his pitching is suffering?
   68. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:11 PM (#2911784)
I think Lou's going to start playing him at first on non-pitching days.
   69. Evan Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:11 PM (#2911786)
Well, he's accounted for more runs today than he's given up so far, so he's good so far.
   70. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:12 PM (#2911788)
Maybe Lee can pitch? He knows double plays and Ks.
   71. Evan Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:13 PM (#2911793)
And we're back to 3 and 2.
   72. Evan Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:14 PM (#2911796)
I like the other outcome from there better.
   73. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:14 PM (#2911797)
This is frustrating to watch.
   74. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:15 PM (#2911799)
3-2 count number 86. K/CS would be nice.
   75. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:16 PM (#2911801)
No need to thank me.
   76. Pops Freshenmeyer Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:17 PM (#2911804)
Nice, retro.

You don't see guys out at second base on a CS by 10 feet very often...
   77. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:18 PM (#2911806)
Especially on a full count. What was Phillips doing?
   78. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:22 PM (#2911814)
The Nationals could come to town on a 13-game losing streak. I'm not sure how I feel about that.
   79. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:24 PM (#2911816)
I think he was out, but that was excellent hustle on the part of Aramis.
   80. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:24 PM (#2911818)
Santo's having an aneurysm.
   81. Moses Taylor didn't fall far from the awesome tree Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:26 PM (#2911823)
Ugh.
   82. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:27 PM (#2911827)
Not sure what happened, but it broke Yahoo. Only 2 outs that inning.
   83. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:28 PM (#2911829)
I'm guessing Aramis out at home after tagging on Fukudome's fly ball?
   84. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:29 PM (#2911832)
Oh, christ. That's just embarrassing.
   85. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:30 PM (#2911833)
Aramis never left 3rd. He was stranded. Somebody flew out to Patterson to end the inning, but I was working and don't know who it was. Sorry.
   86. Weeks T. Olive Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:31 PM (#2911835)
Hmm, here's what Yahoo has:

- A. Ramirez doubled to deep center
- J. Edmonds struck out looking
- A. Ramirez to third on wild pitch
- K. Fukudome flied out to center

0 runs, 1 hits, 0 errors

Something's amiss.
   87. isaacc7 Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:31 PM (#2911837)
C'mon, somebody tell us what happened!
   88. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:31 PM (#2911839)
Fukudome flew out to end the inning after DeRosa was caught looking.
   89. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:32 PM (#2911840)
Gah--Patterson and Fogg with hits this inning.
   90. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:33 PM (#2911842)
Sorry--Rosales was hitting for Fogg.
   91. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:34 PM (#2911844)
Patterson was out.
   92. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:34 PM (#2911846)
Nice way to end that.
   93. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:34 PM (#2911847)
Yeah, but he was safe with his "dumbass ballplayer" handicap.
   94. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:37 PM (#2911852)
Heinrich Weiss putting pressure on the defense with his speed.
   95. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:38 PM (#2911853)
Patterson learned everything he knows about running the bases from Moises Alou.

News on MLB.tv crawl:

Pads Estes suffers another setback.

There are so many things that could possibly mean.
   97. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:42 PM (#2911858)
And Soriano swings through the only pitch I'd ever, ever, ever throw him.
   98. Bunny Vincennes Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:54 PM (#2911867)
I'm predicting GIDP.
   99. retro-shiite Posted: August 21, 2008 at 03:59 PM (#2911876)
Walk to Patterson. You've got to be shitting me.
   100. Evan Posted: August 21, 2008 at 04:00 PM (#2911877)
and 3-2 again. I wonder what the record for one game is?
