Wang instead of Mussina. Should I -- rooting for the Indians -- be glad? Mussina looked awful in the second half, but then he looked great at the very end of the season. Wang is better at home than he is on the road, but has only pitched on three days of rest once in his career.
   2. Dewitty_Pun Posted: October 08, 2007 at 03:36 PM (#2567580)
Supposedly sinkerballs do better on short rest, or at least are affected less than other types of pitchers(except knuckleballers). So that combined with Wang's great home splits makes him the starter over a dying Moose. Pettite starts games 5 on full rest regardless.
   3. Dewitty_Pun Posted: October 08, 2007 at 03:37 PM (#2567582)
'Regardless' assumes the Yankees win, of course which is far from gaurenteed.
   4. johan Posted: October 08, 2007 at 04:17 PM (#2567648)
I think its a great choice for the Yankees. Wang on short rest at home gives them a better chance to win than Mussina at this point. If they also had to bring back Pettitte on short rest then it would change things a great deal. Thats the same reason I would start CC tonight if I were the Indians- they have the luxury of coming back with Carmona on full rest.

   7. Gamingboy Posted: October 08, 2007 at 05:26 PM (#2567769)
The 4th Reich of the Yankee Empire comes to an end tonight.

(For the record:
First Reich: 1921-1943
Second Reich: 1947-1964
Third Reich: 1976-1981
Fourth Reich: 1995 to present)
   8. PJ Martinez Posted: October 08, 2007 at 07:03 PM (#2567860)
If the Yankees do lose tonight, won't the "fourth reich" be retrospectively dated to either 2000 (their last title, obviously) or 2004 (their last visit to the ALCS, and their ignominious collapse at the hands of their hated rivals)? Sure, they've made the playoffs the last few years, but, if they lose tonight, those trips will all have been rather unsuccessful.

(And I wouldn't date this reich to 1995, when they lost to the Mariners with Showalter at the helm.)

Also, that will allow some space between the fourth reich and the fifth one-- which could start as soon as next year. If they re-sign/extend A-Rod, he assumes a more stable role in the team's identity (this season and last have both ended with speculation about his future, or lack thereof, in New York). Hughes moves into the rotation, possibly joined by Joba-- unless he takes over from Mariano. Jeter and, I suspect, Posada will still be around, possibly Mariano, too-- but all may have slightly less prominent roles on the next dominant Yankee team.

If, that is, the Yankees lose tonight. Or in game five.

I hope Wedge has a very quick hook tonight if Byrd gets into trouble. No more of this waiting for the pitcher to work his way out of trouble ########, this isn't some game in May.
   10. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: October 08, 2007 at 07:09 PM (#2567868)
Were I Wedge, I'd have really considered a staff start tonight. With a day off, I'd feel comfortable asking for, say, 35 pitches from each of my three best relievers.
   11. PJ Martinez Posted: October 08, 2007 at 07:12 PM (#2567872)
Were I Wedge, I would have started Sabathia. Oh well.

Also, if Wang struggles-- which I don't expect-- Mussina has had at least one very good and fairly long relief outing in an elimination game in the playoffs. Granted, he had had a better regular season that year.

   13. PJ Martinez Posted: October 08, 2007 at 07:22 PM (#2567886)
Apparently Clemens is done-- replaced by Villone, won't play in the ALCS, should the Yanks make it that far.
   14. SacBunt Posted: October 08, 2007 at 07:24 PM (#2567887)
Is there any data on the effectiveness of pitchers on short rest? I would think that a pitcher would be like himself but just tire more quickly, so that if his ERA normally starts rising around pitch 100, his ERA might show the same pattern around pitch 75. Or is the pattern different with every pitcher?

2001 was the last night of the Dynasty, from what I understand.

We need four solid innings from Byrd tonight, and that's it. After that the bullpen should be able to take over.

I'll take the over. 17 for each half inning, plus more for pitching changes, plus the pre/postgame. Got to be over.
   26. Dr Love Posted: October 08, 2007 at 07:38 PM (#2567911)
I'm not counting the pre or post game. But I am second guessing my line.

With Wang softening, how long can Torre ride him tonight?
   48. Amit Posted: October 08, 2007 at 07:45 PM (#2567935)
Good question. Wang is going to have to stiffen in a hurry.

I think Sizemore was able to go deep on Wang because Wang can't seem to generate any sink with his balls.

2 runs are nothing. It'll take at least 6 to win this game, probably more like 8.
   62. Dr Love Posted: October 08, 2007 at 07:51 PM (#2567951)
Speared by Wang
   63. PJ Martinez Posted: October 08, 2007 at 07:51 PM (#2567952)
Yankees should still be favored to win this game.
   64. Lassus Posted: October 08, 2007 at 07:52 PM (#2567953)
The annoying thing for Yankee fans is that the hit was actually a bloop. Too slow to catch the runner at home, too far for Cano to get. But if the sinker-baller could get some sink on his damn pitches, this would be happening.

That's ok, boys, we got ourselves a heaping helping of Paul Byrd coming up.

Unless the starter's been switched. I just walked in.
   65. SacBunt Posted: October 08, 2007 at 07:52 PM (#2567954)
24 pitches in the first. Good start.
   66. Tony H. Posted: October 08, 2007 at 07:52 PM (#2567955)
Don't suck, please, Byrd. Give up two runs in four innings, that's all I ask.
   67. tribefan Posted: October 08, 2007 at 07:52 PM (#2567956)
61 - true, but good to start piling them up in the first though, no?

I think he just didn't want to interrupt the whole personal catcher thing. I don't think Vic has caught Byrd once this year.

Jeter gets that 2007 postseason average over .100. Clutch.

forgot about that.
   80. Gamingboy Posted: October 08, 2007 at 07:57 PM (#2567969)
I more chose the dates for the "reichs" on playoff appearance clusters. I just have this feeling that if the Yankees lose, Torre will be fired, and A-Rod will leave. Without Torre or A-Rod, I believe the Yankees will fail to make the playoffs next season.

Do you honestly Torre makes a positive difference in the Yankees making the postseason at this point?
