Who would have guessed that Dusty lasts further into the season than Harold Reynolds? Hendry, get on the phone and call his agent!

Hendry, get on the phone and call his agent!

We could demote Theriot and let Reynolds start at 2B.

Well, Reynolds is a couple of years younger than Julio Franco.

According to Will Carroll, Beltran has patella tendonitis, an injury that can be easily aggravated. I'm concerned; it does look like Beltran is slower in the field (like Sunday's no-catch of Oswalt's bloop) and Willie did want to sit Beltran down on Sunday (until Beltran convinced him otherwise. Why not give him some rest?

I had an inflamed patella tendon last year. I could barely walk, I can't imagine playing baseball.

Chavez was fortunate there, but he's a great fielder. I like having him start with Glavine on the hill.

I wouldn't worry too much about Beltran not getting enough rest. One thing we know about Beltran is that he's willing to take some time when he's hurting if he feels it is necessary. Remember this April?

It's scary to think how good Carlos Zambrano would be if he cut down on the walks. He's a Cy Young candidate despite all the walks.
   35. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: July 25, 2006 at 07:33 PM (#2111948)
The Cubs do still have an impressive core. Lee, Ramirez, and Barrett are three excellent blocks to build an offense around. They just need to do a better job surrounding these guys with talent.
   36. Bob Koo Posted: July 25, 2006 at 07:35 PM (#2111952)
Zambrano has 3 home runs? He probably should be batting 7th in this lineup.
   37. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 25, 2006 at 07:36 PM (#2111954)
I think the worst thing that can happen to the Mets is a bad week for the starters. With it fresh in Omar's mind, it may force him into a deal for Armas or Kip Wells, or even Zito. I don't want the Mets making a move based on one bad week.

Omar should stand pat. If he takes a beating, so be it.

Glavine has been bad for almost three months now. It could be over for him if he can't even do well against the Cubs. He got hit by them last week, too.

Keith is right- I can't remember the last time the Mets played hit-and-run. Then again, it may have just been a straight steal by Floyd?

Ah c'mon. That first pitch to Reyes was definitely off the corner.
   55. Banta Posted: July 25, 2006 at 07:47 PM (#2111992)
I hope we don't end up looking at this season wondering how good things might have turned out for Reyes if he didn't hurt himself diving into first.

Is this season really that remarkable for Endy? His OPS entering today was .728.

Yes, and last year it was .542.

I hope we don't end up looking at this season wondering how good things might have turned out for Reyes if he didn't hurt himself diving into first.

Guys go on hot streaks and slumps. Just look at Delgado. He was slumping and now he's on a hot streak. If Reyes does revert to his old ways, which I doubt he will, it won't be because of an injury.

   64. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 25, 2006 at 07:55 PM (#2112010)
What was the AFLAC question?

Glavine is now fourth all-time in games started by a lefty. Who are the other three?
   65. Banta Posted: July 25, 2006 at 07:56 PM (#2112011)
Is this season really that remarkable for Endy? His OPS entering today was .728.

Nah, it makes sense seeing as how he's right in his peak years. His career OPS entering this season was 658 (with a .299 OBP). Still, I consider it magical because I don't really expect it to continue next year. He hasn't really shown any improved patience at the plate and I've seen a lot of hits that have just sort of fallen in. Subtract 20 points off his batting average and his OPS gets pretty close to his career marks. This could very well be his career year. Endy is not a good offensive player.
   66. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: July 25, 2006 at 07:57 PM (#2112015)
Yes, and last year it was .542.

His career OPS entering this season was .658 so a .728 OPS in about 200 plate appearances isn't that amazing to me. Valentin's season has been much more remarkable IMO.
   67. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: July 25, 2006 at 07:58 PM (#2112018)
What is up with Glavine? I shudder to think what'll happen when he faces major-league competition again.
   68. Banta Posted: July 25, 2006 at 07:59 PM (#2112021)
If Reyes does revert to his old ways, which I doubt he will, it won't be because of an injury.

I wasn't saying directly because of the injury, but he was on a roll before that. Which isn't to say that he won't be on a roll again, but if he doesn't, the injury would serve as an interesting bookmark if you're into selective endpoints.
   69. AJM Posted: July 25, 2006 at 07:59 PM (#2112022)
Glavine is now fourth all-time in games started by a lefty. Who are the other three?

Carlton, John, Plank.
   70. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: July 25, 2006 at 07:59 PM (#2112023)
Warren Spahn has to be one of theose guys. Steve Carlton is another.

   72. Banta Posted: July 25, 2006 at 08:00 PM (#2112026)
Plus, Endy's season last year consisted of all of 116 ABs.
   73. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 25, 2006 at 08:00 PM (#2112027)
Valentin's season has been much more remarkable IMO.

Never said it wasn't.

Considering Endy went into Spring Training in a battle with Tike Redman for the fifth outfielder job, this season has been magical. Chavez looked like a floating corpse in 2005, his first season as a true reserve. It appeared as if he could never make it as a bench player.
   74. Banta Posted: July 25, 2006 at 08:02 PM (#2112033)
What is up with Glavine? I shudder to think what'll happen when he faces major-league competition again.

All I can say is Pedro better be awesome when he gets healthy.

You know guys, I didn't hate LoDuca at the beginning of the season. I really had no preconceptions about him before the Mets got him. But now at this point, I think I hate LoDuca as much as someone can hate a player on the team that you root for. Everything about the guy really irritates me.

Of course, I'm hating Glavine a bit right now. But that's old hat!
   88. Bob Koo Posted: July 25, 2006 at 08:08 PM (#2112053)
What a disgraceful inning by Glavine. Mets manage 4 runs off Zambrano, and he can't keep the lead.

All that I ask is for the Mets to beat the Cubs into a bloody pulp, because they're at the point where they need that. And they can't seem to do it. God I hate the Mets.
   92. Banta Posted: July 25, 2006 at 08:10 PM (#2112060)
Christ, this series could have disasterous consequences for all involved. It could lead Omar to believe that he really has to make a trade for a starter and Cubs management to reup Dusty.
   93. Bob Koo Posted: July 25, 2006 at 08:11 PM (#2112064)
In fairness, Glavine only gave up one hard-hit ball (the Blanco hit) during the inning. But the two walks were killer.

I can't believe Omar is considering Kip Wells, Tony Armas, Livan Hernandez and Rodrigo Lopez. If you're gonna make a move, get Zito.

The Mets aren't about to let Dusty leave the NL managing ranks. Plus, Victor Diaz isn't on the team.

You hate Lo Duca because he ALMOST didn't catch a ball?

Uh, no.

I hate his personality, I hate his crappy defense (complete with his incredible lack of ability to move his body at all when blocking a ball), I hate his empty .300 batting average, I hate all the little mistakes that he makes during the course of the game that no one seems to notice.

I'm sure a bit part into why I don't like him is because of the media and therefore it's a bit unfair to hate LoDuca for that, but I don't really care. Somebody needs to hate the guy to balance the universe and I guess it falls to me.
