Alberto Gonzalez fielded all three outs at third base in the first inning and Sterling reported, "Well, of course, he's tied a major league record with three assists in one inning." But isn't it possible to record many more assists in an inning? I thought if an infielder fields a ball cleanly and the first baseman drops his throw the infielder is still credited with an assist. Also, if there is a rundown, for example a 7-6-5-4-1-6-5, does the shortstop only get one assist or two?

For good measure, some trivia: who holds the #1 AND the #2 spot for most assists by a third baseman in a single season?

Here's a hint: they were accomplished on two different teams.
