   1. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:49 AM (#2421906)
I have a bad feeling about this game.
   2. Doris from Rego Park Posted: June 29, 2007 at 04:58 PM (#2422714)
Mention of Julio Franco in the first game's thread had me curious as to which Met has grounded into the most double plays in a single game.

I'm using only the free version of BRef's Play Index, but it looks like Joe Torre sits alone atop this sexy list with four double plays on July 21, 1975. The 13,414 faithful in attendance can tip their cap to Mr. Torre for helping a 25 hit game finish in under two hours.
   3. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 05:19 PM (#2422723)
Start Delgado! I don't care if it's a lefty...he's on fire today.

I'm guessing we'll see Easley in right, Franco at third or first and Gotay at second.
   4. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 05:55 PM (#2422759)
Haha, the Phils broadcast used a Star Wars intro for the first game? That's AWESOME.

"I'm a gambler, I'm a racist, and I like 18 year old girls." ~Blowduca

Don't ask me if that's taken out of context. I'm just trying to be a real reporter.

From AP notes:

Mets starters are 4-0 with a 1.55 ERA in the last seven games.
   7. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 06:13 PM (#2422776)
Oh, and I hope Hamels throws at Blow Duca tonight. I'm sure he will.

Phillies Pitcher Gets Rushed By Dwarf... Film at eleven!

Hah. I bet the Los Mets contingent would have plenty to say to the media if and when this happened.

Jose: I was rooting for Hamels.

Delgado: Honestly, I couldn't see the top of LoDuca's head from where I was sitting in the dugout. So it was hard to tell if he was going to first or charging the mound.

Beltran: Man, he's slow. It took Paul so long to get to the mound, I was already in the batter's box ready to hit and Hamels was in his wind-up.

The possibilities are endless.
   10. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 06:36 PM (#2422800)
Wow, no Gotay. And Delgado and Green are both playing. Interesting.
   11. Bob Koo Posted: June 29, 2007 at 06:51 PM (#2422807)
Green has no business starting against Hamels. Would've liked to see Easley in right and Gotay at second.
   12. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:01 PM (#2422823)
OK...why does MLB.tv not have a working link up?
   13. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:02 PM (#2422825)
This music sounds more like Spaceballs than Star Wars. I guess that works too.
   14. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:03 PM (#2422828)
I'm fine, Matt. Did you go the MLB.COM page to click on the game?
   15. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:04 PM (#2422829)
The link just showed up now. I guess doubleheaders mess them up.
   16. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:05 PM (#2422830)
Why the heck do we get the Phillies announcers again? Ugh.
   17. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:06 PM (#2422831)
Actually stacking a lineup with lefties against a lefty changeup artist is not a bad idea. Hamels has no killer breaking ball to trouble lefties and might be more reluctant to throw the change inside to them.

Was m.o against Glavine in the late-90s
   18. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:07 PM (#2422832)
Haha, uniform change.
   19. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:10 PM (#2422837)
I hate the black uniforms. So ugly.
   20. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:10 PM (#2422839)
Hamels ERA is 3.04 at home and 4.47 on the road. Is is that hard for them to look it up?
   21. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:11 PM (#2422840)
Well this is a promising start.
   22. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:11 PM (#2422841)
Still sucks.
   23. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:11 PM (#2422843)
Just missed.
   24. Bob Koo Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:11 PM (#2422844)
Howie Rose played me on that one...
   25. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:12 PM (#2422845)
Geez, Reyes has to tag on that, doesn't he?
   26. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:12 PM (#2422846)
############ I thought that was gone.
   27. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:12 PM (#2422848)
Blah, I thought that was gone.
   28. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:14 PM (#2422854)
He's got nothing here. DOn't swing.
   29. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:15 PM (#2422856)
Alright, Delgado, just a sac fly. That's all I ask.
   30. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:15 PM (#2422858)
Come on Cerrano.
   31. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:15 PM (#2422860)
OK, now it's no harm/no foul that Reyes didn't tag. Come on, Carlos # 2.
   32. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:16 PM (#2422861)
Strikeout or GIDP for Delgado here?
   33. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:16 PM (#2422862)
Wright has swung at a 3-0 pitch 4 times in 118 PA for his career.
   34. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:16 PM (#2422865)
Let's go Delgado.
   35. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:19 PM (#2422869)
Blah, knew it was too much to ask for.

Come on, Easley.
   36. Bob Koo Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:19 PM (#2422871)
Delgado giveth; Delgado taketh away.
   37. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:19 PM (#2422872)
Art Howe: "He battled."

Me: Unsuccessfully.
   38. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:19 PM (#2422874)
At least he didn't GIDP.
   39. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:19 PM (#2422875)
Damn, let's go Easley.
   40. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:20 PM (#2422876)
That sucked.
   41. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:20 PM (#2422878)
Such crap. Hamels will probably shut us down the rest of the way.
   42. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:21 PM (#2422881)
What a waste. Boy, was THIS a situation where we missed Alou, or what??? Wow.
   43. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:21 PM (#2422882)
At least the Mets made him throw a lot of pitches.
   44. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:21 PM (#2422883)
Well, they made him throw 29 pitches.
   45. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:29 PM (#2422904)
Utley is good, just in case you guys didn't know.
   46. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:29 PM (#2422907)
I think Utley is probably the best player in the National League right now.
   47. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:30 PM (#2422911)
Alright Maine!
   48. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:31 PM (#2422912)
Maine's looking a bit erratic with his secondary pitches so far, but he's spotting his fastball well.
   49. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:31 PM (#2422913)
Nasty work to Howard. Great stuff from Maine.
   50. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:33 PM (#2422918)
A hit for Green!
   51. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:34 PM (#2422928)
Green showing off his legs!
   52. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:35 PM (#2422929)
Wow, that was a huge jump that Green got. He should tell Reyes about his read.
   53. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:35 PM (#2422931)
Um . . . what was that??? Blown hit and run? Green realizing Hamels was paying no attention? Green was dared by somebody?
   54. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:35 PM (#2422932)
Productive out!
   55. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:35 PM (#2422933)
Can Maine get another RBI?
   56. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:36 PM (#2422937)
He should tell Reyes about his read.

Well, Reyes doesn't get the same read, because Green doesn't get the same attention from Hamels. But, hey -- it wouldn't hurt to ask, I guess.
   57. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:36 PM (#2422938)
Maine's not too good at bunting, don't squeeze.
   58. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:38 PM (#2422940)
Come on Reyes. Get a hit, please.
   59. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:39 PM (#2422945)
It's hard to get a hit where Hamels is throwing those pitches.
   60. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:39 PM (#2422947)
Wild pitch!

Warning? WTF?
   61. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:39 PM (#2422948)
Well, that worked out pretty damn well. LoDuca wasn't getting that run in.

God, is this umpiring crew braindead?
   62. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:39 PM (#2422951)
What the heck was that? And a warning? That's stupid. I'll take it.
   63. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:40 PM (#2422952)
But then, who needs a hit where Hamels threw that LAST one? What was that all about?
   64. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:42 PM (#2422960)
What's the opposite of clutch? PAUL LODUCA.

I'm not huge on RBIs, but no player who isn't a leadoff man (and LoDuca's been batting lower in the lineup too!) should start the All Star having 21 RBIs at about the midway point.
   65. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:42 PM (#2422962)
I think Hamels was trying to walk Reyes, pretty clearly. And he may have even been trying to hit him with ball four (heck, same difference if you walk him or hit him, right?). If the ump thought the latter, then I guess you can justify the warning. But it's a pretty thin basis for it . . . .
   66. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:44 PM (#2422967)
I hate that warning though because you never know when Maine could just let one get away from him accidentally.
   67. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:45 PM (#2422968)
I like Maine's stuff & location so far. Sharp.
   68. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:46 PM (#2422969)
Man, you love to see that inning from Maine. He hardly ever throws an inning on less than 10 pitches.
   69. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:46 PM (#2422970)
7 pitch inning, nice.
   70. Bob Koo Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:46 PM (#2422971)
Thanks Abraham!
   71. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:47 PM (#2422973)
I'm more impressed with the way Maine has pitched recently than I was when he put up that 1.35 ERA in April. He's mixing in more of his offspeed and throwing more strikes. Tremendous.
   72. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:48 PM (#2422975)
Didn't miss that one!
   73. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:48 PM (#2422976)
Beltran, a real man would have hit that in the first.
   74. Bob Koo Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:48 PM (#2422977)
Beltran's swinging the bat much better these days. He just attacks that ball when he's on.
   75. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:48 PM (#2422978)
BELTRAN! I wish he did that in his last AB but I'll take it.
   76. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:50 PM (#2422983)
Why would Hamels be throwing at Reyes?
   77. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:51 PM (#2422990)
Why would Hamels be throwing at Reyes?

Ron thought it might have something to do with Jose darting down the third base line...
   78. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:51 PM (#2422991)
Who's the ##### now?
   79. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:52 PM (#2422992)
Why would Hamels be throwing at Reyes?

General hostility between the teams? His little temper tantrum during Game 1?
   80. Doris from Rego Park Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:52 PM (#2422994)
Another rough outing for Trachsel. Looks like the dream is over.
   81. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:52 PM (#2422995)
Why would Hamels be throwing at Reyes?

Keith said maybe because Reyes was running around trying to draw the balk in the first inning.
   82. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:53 PM (#2422999)
Screw Hamels then.
   83. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:56 PM (#2423006)
Better voice, Kalas or Scully?
   84. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:56 PM (#2423007)
Screw Hamels then.

No. You know what? I like that. That's good, tough baseball. He didn't throw at Jose's head or anything. Hamels is saying, "You're gonna play games with me, I've got a few games I can play, too." It was a situation where he was gonna walk Reyes anyway. To me, I have no problem with that, and as it happened, becuase Hamels didn't execute it, the Mets got a run. Worked out just fine.
   85. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:57 PM (#2423010)
Now Ron's in the Phillies booth. Who's with the Mets, LA?
   86. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:57 PM (#2423012)
Kalas or Scully?

Kalas, I think, but Scully's obviously the superior overall announcer.
   87. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:59 PM (#2423016)
Now Ron's in the Phillies booth. Who's with the Mets, LA?

Chris Wheeler.
   88. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 07:59 PM (#2423017)
That's, uh, not the kind of pitch you're supposed to be swinging at in a 3-1 count, Greenie.

Not being negative, just some helpful advice!
   89. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 08:00 PM (#2423020)
That's good, tough baseball.

I agree with everything you said there Sam. Still, screw Hamels. Hamels isn't going to last past the 5th at this rate.
   90. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: June 29, 2007 at 08:00 PM (#2423023)
Hamels is pitching more like Porter... up to 75 pitches.
   91. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 08:01 PM (#2423024)
I don't like throwing at anyone for any reason. Except Blow Duca.
   92. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 08:01 PM (#2423025)
Hamels is pitching more like Porter... up to 75 pitches.

Porter?
   93. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 08:01 PM (#2423026)
Green...solid catch.
   94. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 08:07 PM (#2423035)
That looked like it was on the line.
   95. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: June 29, 2007 at 08:07 PM (#2423036)
Chris Wheeler.

Oh I bet that's entertaining. Not.
   96. Sam M. Posted: June 29, 2007 at 08:08 PM (#2423037)
Damn, that was close. Just barely off the line.
   97. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 08:09 PM (#2423038)
Great AB by Gomez, no matter the result.
   98. Banta Posted: June 29, 2007 at 08:11 PM (#2423039)
Come on, Bourn, you can't be robbing Maine of extra basehits.
   99. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: June 29, 2007 at 08:11 PM (#2423040)
Son of a #####. I didn't think Maine was capable of hitting a ball that far.
   100. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: June 29, 2007 at 08:12 PM (#2423043)
That's the hardest Maine will ever hit a ball, methinks.
