Of course I get tickets to a Trachsel start, very slim chance but I might try to see Oliver on Thur, but I highly doubt it right now.

I will be behind the plate between it and the Mets dugout and sure to attempt to start some Lets Go Mets chants! Look for me I will be decked out in Mets gear, though I haven't decided if I'm going with the black jersey or the 87 Road jersey yet, always bet on black!

I will do my all to instill the confidence back in DW.

Can't wait to catch BP!

All the years of people taking potshots at my boys in the bars in Lodo, I look forward to what nonsense they have for me this year.

The Red Sox are shopping Wells. Should the Mets trade for him? He's pitching well of late (2.65 ERA in 34 innings in August) and has a lot of playoff experience. I wouldn't mind trading for him just to keep him from other teams.
   3. Free Rob Base Posted: August 29, 2006 at 04:23 PM (#2160610)
Should the Mets trade for him?

No.

Should the Mets trade for him?

Let's see . . . what's our track record like with corpulent former Red Sox? Not good.

Pass.

Even is you don't like Wells, there's an argument to be made to keep him from other teams the Mets might face in the playoffs.

That's way too speculative to be worth it.

I am not in any way, shape, or form scared of David Wells. Any team wants to pick him up to face the Mets, go right ahead. Jose Reyes will bunt him into oblivion, Carlos Beltran, David Wright, and Jose Valentin will pound him into retirement, and Carlos Delgado and Shawn Green will remind him that the platoon advantage doesn't help when you're overmatched, overage, and overdone.

Bring the fat slob on.
   8. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: August 29, 2006 at 05:22 PM (#2160659)
I agree with Sam.

It's not nice to make fun of fat people.

And this has what, exactly, to do with David Wells?
   11. PreservedFish Posted: August 29, 2006 at 06:44 PM (#2160722)
Wells is probably better than Dave Williams. But I don't know if the difference is worth the cost of the new oversized uniforms.

I haven't followed the Mets due to my life outside of everything college ending. Who are they calling up on Friday?

I hate to tell you this, Matt, but the league took over the Mets after it was announced that Steve Trachsel would be starting Game 1 of the NLDS. They're not allowed to call up anybody on Friday.
   14. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:08 PM (#2160815)
Kevin Mulvey made his second start in AA today. He pitched 4.1 shutout innings. He allowed 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5.
   15. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:11 PM (#2160817)
MVP!

Beltran sure loves playing on the road. That was crushed.

MVP! MVP! MVP!
   18. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:13 PM (#2160821)
Didn't Sullivan screw up a couple of play at Shea too?
   19. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:16 PM (#2160822)
So that's what a hit by Wright looks like.
   20. Ignatius J. Reilly Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:16 PM (#2160823)
Any idea why Mulvey jumped almost immediately to AA? From what I understand he was relatively polished coming out of Villanova, but it seems as if even the most advanced college pitchers spend some time in A-ball in their 1st professional seasons. Isn't the Mets M.O. to send these type of players to the FSL to get their feet wet? What separates Mulvey from a Miller, Lincecum, Lincoln, etc...?
   21. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:21 PM (#2160825)
Oh hey Kaz Matsui-son.
   22. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:21 PM (#2160826)
FWIW, Miller is being called up to the majors by the Tigers.

Minaya seems perfectly willing to rush players through the minors and doesn't mind if they struggle at the new level. Carlos Gomez, Deolis Guerra, Fernando Martinez, Pelfrey, etc.
   23. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:24 PM (#2160827)
A hit? A stolen base? Who is that guy?
   24. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:25 PM (#2160828)
What the #### Trachsel.
   25. zack Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:28 PM (#2160830)
I think the Rockies announcer used the words "Trachsel" "quick" "to" "the" and "plate" in a row.
   26. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:33 PM (#2160835)
Floyd played a game for St. Lucie today. He went 2-3 while playing left.

Jesus Flores went 3-3 with 2 homers. He is hitting .262/.330/.474 with 19 homers and 31 doubles in 416 ABs. That's a lot of power for a catcher but he has struck out 123 times this season with only 26 walks. He gets hit by a ton of pitches, 18 already this season.
   27. PreservedFish Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:34 PM (#2160837)
"Any idea why Mulvey jumped almost immediately to AA?"

So he is eligible for Arizona fall league. Not sure if that's true, but Ir ead it somewhere
   28. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:35 PM (#2160838)
Wow, Trax got out of that with only one run.

Reyes! 4 more to go.

Jose Reyes with the opposite field power.
   31. Sam M. Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:44 PM (#2160844)
How do you like that . . . . Reyes makes 'em pay for the really, really bad walk to the pitcher.
   32. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:47 PM (#2160848)
I never thought i'd be saying it this year, but Jose Reyes is a better player than David Wright.
   33. Sam M. Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:50 PM (#2160850)
Jose Reyes is a better player than David Wright.

Let's not make judgments at the nadir of Wright's worst stretch of the season. It's awfully easy to have perceptions overly influenced by the most recent stretch of games, which are decidedly NOT typical of Wright as a hitter. Remember where Wright's numbers were at the ASB; that hitter -- which is the hitter I still believe Wright is -- is still a better player than Reyes.
   34. Rob Base Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:51 PM (#2160851)

   35. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:55 PM (#2160853)
One of the Rockies guys picked Howard as the NL MVP.

So, I'm going to miss about 3 weeks of game chatter. Getting married Sunday.
   37. Sam M. Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:57 PM (#2160855)
One of the Rockies guys picked Howard as the NL MVP.

Idiot. He asked where would the Phillies be without him. A: The same place they are now: Out of the play-offs. So even if you're going to use that criteria, Howard loses.

Which is a stupid argument anyway . . . .
   38. J. Cross Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:57 PM (#2160857)
Jose Reyes is a better player than David Wright.

Let's not make judgments at the nadir of Wright's worst stretch of the season.

Agreed. Let's just enjoy the fact that Reyes rocks. Also, let's not get anywhere near David Wells. Take on David Wells to prevent the Pads from getting him? This isn't Roy Halladay we're talking about here; it's David F-ing Wells. I hope our competitors trade for him.
   39. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:58 PM (#2160858)
So you think Wright's advantage offensively, taking into account his poor defense, is enough to outweigh Reyes' all-around game? Reyes is a +10 on defense, Wright is a -10.
   40. Free Rob Base Posted: August 29, 2006 at 09:58 PM (#2160859)

Beltran is so going to break the mets HR record.

But I'm going to be in Bora Bora! Realistically though, if I can find the internet, I'll log on to be mean to levski.

Congrats Rob, have fun.

Thanks. Actually, I think this means the fun's over, technically. :-)

Oh, i'm loving it. It spits in the face of all those saber-nuts who said Jose would never develop plate discipline.
   46. Banta Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:00 PM (#2160867)
You know, Kaz's swing looks a ton better. He's actually staying in the batter's box while swinging.
   47. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:02 PM (#2160868)
This clearly isn't the real Kaz Matsui.
   48. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:02 PM (#2160869)
Sam, if you are going to measure Wright on what he did before the ASB, I think you have to measure Reyes on what he has done the since June first, roughly half a season of work. Including tonight, here are Reyes' numbers.

.334/.382/.552, 34/6 SB/CS, 15 2b, 11 homers, 10 triples, and 69 runs in 70 games.

The amazing thing about that stretch is that it includes an underwhelming July (.739 OPS).

It is scary how good he can be.
   49. Sam M. Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:02 PM (#2160870)

Levski's the best man, I assume?

So you think Wright's advantage offensively, taking into account his poor defense, is enough to outweigh Reyes' all-around game? Reyes is a +10 on defense, Wright is a -10.

Assuming the advantage is truly what Wright was doing at the ASB, then yes -- that outweighs the defensive advantage Reyes has. But Reyes's advancement has certainly made him an elite player, in Wright's class, far faster than I ever believed would happen. That's been amazing.

Matsui producing like this against us is getting annoying.
   50. Rob Base Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:02 PM (#2160871)
I'm actually pretty optimistic that Reyes will hit for good power (30-35 hr) in his prime. He's a big kid, but he's not filled out. He'll be much thicker when he's 29ish.
   51. Rob Base Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:03 PM (#2160873)

Levski's the best man, I assume?

Chris Dial is signing the ketubah.
   52. Sam M. Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:04 PM (#2160874)
Sam, if you are going to measure Wright on what he did before the ASB,

Well, I do that because it's Wright pre-ASB, validated by it being consistent with what he did in 2005 as well.

Trachsel is driving me a little crazy here . . . .
   53. J. Cross Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:05 PM (#2160875)
So you think Wright's advantage offensively, taking into account his poor defense, is enough to outweigh Reyes' all-around game? Reyes is a +10 on defense, Wright is a -10.

No doubt, Reyes has had a better season to this point than Wright. Still, Wright's D has been better of late and he's got a nice run left in him this year.
   54. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:06 PM (#2160877)

   57. Sam M. Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:07 PM (#2160880)
I suspect that Trachsel is now in the midst of putting himself firmly into 5th place in the race for the post-season rotation. This is very, very unimpressive.
   58. J. Cross Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:08 PM (#2160882)

He asked where would the Phillies be without him. A: The same place they are now: Out of the play-offs. So even if you're going to use that criteria, Howard loses.

And of course this ignores that Utley is better than Howard.

That's two! Excellent. Come on, now. One more, and we at least keep the lead.
   62. Banta Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:14 PM (#2160889)
See, Trachsel knows how to pitch with a lead. He knows exactly how much to give back. He's a winner in every sense of the word.
   63. Sam M. Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:15 PM (#2160890)
Credit to Trachsel. After the double by Holliday, that was positively Bannister-like to escape with no more damage.
   64. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:15 PM (#2160891)
Trachsel getting out of these jams will probably make him the go to guy out of the bullpen in the playoffs.

It shouldn't, but it does surprise me that Islam and Judaism have so much in common. Islam not only has a similar thing to the ketubah, it is called the ketab.

Apparently, the Astros are about to hold a presser to announce they've signed Oswalt to a five-year extension. Cross him off your wish list, boys.
   87. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:57 PM (#2160948)
Oswalt scares me long term to be honest. Compare him to Tim Hudson at the end of the 2004 season.

Both are small guys.
Both have thrown a lot of innings in their career before 30.
Both have seen a severe decline in their strikeout rate.
   88. Sam M. Posted: August 29, 2006 at 10:58 PM (#2160949)
That's amazing, that the Rockies have gotten only three starts from pitchers other than their initial five starters at the beginning of the season. The Mets? Hah.

Pedro (20), Glavine (26), Trachsel (27), Zambrano (5), Bannister (6): Total = 84/131

So the Mets have had 47 starts from other pitchers, including:

El Duque 15
Maine 10
Soler 8
Pelfrey 4

Wow.
