The move was made to allow the Mets to carry an extra position player into the playoffs. I have a hard time seeing Hernandez being that guy.
Totally. But sentimentally, I want him on the postseason roster. And we all know sentiment alone is worth a win or two in the playoffs.
rLr, you must be related to that Yanks coach who IBBed to get to the cancer kid.
I would tell my players to bunt against John Lester.
What's up with this?
What was his velocity on the SNY gun? He was 89-90 most of the time on the Colorado broadcast, with 92 his fastest.
91-92 with 94 as his fastest.
You know, I thought Endy's hitting was a lucky at the beginning of the season, but as time as gone on, I really think he's learned something this season.
I meant to have "bit" in there, but I sort of like it as it stands.
Excellent work by Perez. He's really a great all around contributer.
That was painful.
We should all coax ChadBradfordWannabe into doing a detailed analysis.
The way I see things with Oliver Perez is either he's hurt and hiding it or he has to be completely rebuilt from the ground up. Maybe both.
1) Why is Hernandez "IPOR"? International Plan of Record??
2) How come you haven't labeled Perez "Cousin Oliver" yet? He really doesn't fit in at all on this roster,.
In play. Out Recorded. Coined by OFF back in April.
In play - out(s) recorded. It's what it says on gameday when you're tracking a game before they tell you the actual result of a ball in play.
That's damn good.
A couple more innings like this from Ollie, and I'll go door to door spreading your gospel like Jehovah's Witness.
Tulowitzk-- Tulowhissk-- ..... Troy!!
As long as we were discussing Fonzie, suppose we needed to pair him with another 70s icon.
Back up to 12 pitches per out.
In the words of a wise man I met recently - "They don't call it warm feelings. They call it baseball."
And that's completely related to why he doesn't throw as fast as he used to. If Oliver Perez recovers some of his form, I don't think it's gonna be as a pitcher who throws 88-92, it will be as one who throws 94-96, or thereabouts. It's not because he doesn't have the stuff to succeed as is, it's that I believe his control problems are tied directly to the loss in his fastball velocity. Which, as I said before, means he's either suffering from a severe mechanical problem or an injury problem. Neither bode well for the future.
Basically, my entire point is, this isn't a guy who's a tweak or two away. And if the Pirates are as bad of a pitching organization as some have claimed (with good reason), there's no reason to think he was gonna recover at any point this year. Meaning, the Mets probably could have acquired him in the offseason. No doubt their scouts should have been able to see how bad Perez is right now.
His BB/9 has always been pretty high, with the exception of 2004, even when he threw 97-98 pretty regularly...
2002: 4.8
2003: 5.5
2004: 3.7
2005: 6.1
2006: 6.2 (entering tonight)
But Perez is at 85 pitches already. How much more is Willie going to be able to see? I can see it in the second, but not in the fourth.
Well, after 2004 was when his velocity really started to slip and 2002-2003 combined equals about one full season, meaning his BB/9 for those two years was probably around 5.2. Which is high, but obviously it's gotten a lot worse.
Plus, BB/9 isn't the end all to control. He didn't walk a ton tonight, but he sucked because he left his pitches consistently right over the middle of the plate.
Three innings into Perez' Mets career, OFF already had him penciled in as the Mets #3 playoff starter.
Instead of the league leader in WINS!
Which is kinda funny since OFF still won't drink the Roberto Hernandez Kool-Aid 80 innings into his Mets career.
