those that think Duncans playing time is predicated upon his dad, instead of the career 117 ops+ ought to be happy that he was put on the DL today.
   2. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:10 PM (#2868493)
I know batting average isn't the best stat, but since it's what I learned when growing up I still look at it, imagine the average this team could have if the lineup was

Molina - .305
Pujols -- .354
Kennedy -- .271
Miles -- .321
Glaus -- .286
Schumaker -- .296
Ankiel -- .277
Ludwick -- .293.

Looper -- .333 (batting for the pitchers)

also it's funny that the al leader in homeruns has 24, the Phillies have 3 guys with more, the Cardinals have 2 guys with 22, Brewers have two with 20 or better.
   3. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:17 PM (#2868505)
Ankiel actually gets good jumps on the balls but doesn't seem to know exactly where it's going, fortunately he has speed and height to help out.

he gets almost Edmonds level of jumps on the bar but has taguchi level of a clue where it's going after the initial jump.

good carving of Hardy.
   4. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2868513)
oops, I meant to say Cardinals have one with 23 and one with 22.

Yea Ludwick.
   5. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2868514)
healthy Albert and that is maybe a triple. (probably not but he would have at least pretended to try for third)
   6. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2868522)
Weeks with two decent plays, but I think that Fielder should take the blame for Ankiel being safe.
   7. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:27 PM (#2868527)
Suppan definately doesn't have his best stuff tonite, (not that he has any 'stuff' to claim, but nothing is working, luck and a good play/positioning has got him two outs)
   8. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:30 PM (#2868529)
The Brewers have signed Jay Gibbons, the Cubs and Cardinals now have no chance.
   9. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:30 PM (#2868531)
Geez, miss the first inning and it's a repeat of last night.
   10. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:35 PM (#2868538)
Geez, miss the first inning and it's a repeat of last night.

I actually think the Cardinals looked better this time through.
   11. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:39 PM (#2868540)
Jeff might want to mix things up a bit. Cards were teeing off on first pitches in that first inning. He gave up 4 hits/2 runs on 13 pitches......
   12. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:51 PM (#2868574)
Al is pissing Dan off tonite.
   13. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:54 PM (#2868581)
the Cardinals have outscored their opponents in the first two innings 122-77, if we had a bullpen that would work out into a lot more wins.
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:56 PM (#2868584)
Yadier with a double, my GF has Yadi on her fantasy team and each day she debates between him and McCann and almost always plays McCann, she hates it when he has days like this.

Of course she has Hardy and I was trying to convince her to bench him tonite.
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:57 PM (#2868585)
walking Kennedy? really?
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:06 PM (#2868597)
Walking Kennedy is playing right into the hands of batting the pitcher 8th, Yost did that for a while so he knows how beneficial it is to force an end of inning with your pitcher batting.

The Cardinals now have the situations that they hope for by doing that. I have almost never understood the concept of intentionally walking the 8th hitter(in this case the 7th--but same theory)
   17. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:06 PM (#2868598)
Lohse looks good there.
   18. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:08 PM (#2868600)
Izturis has stopped switch hitting? While I like the idea, I don't think it will help him at all. He still can't hit.
   19. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2868606)
Izturis experiment needs to end.
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:10 PM (#2868609)
Bring up Barden.
   21. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:12 PM (#2868613)
I think it was just to get Suppan out of that particular inning with no further damage, and worry about the next inning the next inning. With Izturis hitting ninth, it's like a second pitcher leading off anyways.
   22. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:12 PM (#2868615)
Skip - that was not pretty.
   23. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2868617)
Stan Musial is always the answer.

Nice catch by Prince.
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:15 PM (#2868619)
Moves for Mo to make.

Release Izturis, bring up Barden.

Release Jimenez, bring up Boggs.
Release Villone replace him with Garcia.
Demote Ryan and bring up Hoffpauir.(or Freese)

wow, freaky

11 pitches each of the first four innings.
   25. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:15 PM (#2868620)
Lohse has thrown 11 pitches in every inning? That is weird.
   26. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:16 PM (#2868622)
first hit of the game, that should have been called an error :)
   27. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:18 PM (#2868625)
1 - Sounds good to me.
2 - Isn't Boggs already up? Releasing Jimenez would be great.
3 - Isn't Garcia in the rotation at the present time?
4 - Freese is a 3B, I don't think he can play SS so it'd have to be Hoffpauir. But ok.

Who came up for Duncan, Mather?
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2868630)
Lohse is using the Braves strikezone.
   29. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2868632)
Back to back Ks for Lohse, he's good great control tonight. Very nice.
   30. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2868633)
Boggs was brought up for Garcia, when they needed a fresh arm.

Mather was recalled.
   31. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:22 PM (#2868637)
Thanks, NTN - you're the king of roster moves.
   32. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2868640)
End of the ####### bat again.
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:24 PM (#2868644)
Ok, let me fix that then. Release Jimenez bring Perez back up. put Garcia in villones spot. (both Carpenter and Wainwright will be back very shortly, let Thompson be the emergency starter, he's earned that right)
4 - Freese is a 3B, I don't think he can play SS so it'd have to be Hoffpauir. But ok.

not sure we need a shortstop, let Miles and Barden play there don't really need three people capable playing short. I probably would lean towards Hoffpauir so that he gets playing time but it doesn't really matter to me, just bringing up kids is nice.
   34. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2868649)
Kyle is throwing harder than he has in the past.
   35. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:31 PM (#2868659)
don't really need three people capable playing short

TLR needs this though. Really badly.
   36. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2868662)
I am in favor of Tony feeling the need to meddle and bringing in the bullpen.

This is ridiculous....................
   37. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2868668)
I am in favor of Tony feeling the need to meddle and bringing in the bullpen.

TLR quick hooks Pineiro, but he's willing to let the rest go, mostly. He'll ride Lohse tonight.
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:35 PM (#2868671)
Tlr doesn't meddle with proven veterans, it's the kids who get the meddling done, TLR will keep a proven veteran in the game even if 7 runs score.
   39. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:35 PM (#2868673)
Lohse hasn't thrown many pitches, and with the state of the bullpen (from both rest and effectiveness), he'll stay unless he hits a wall.
   40. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2868674)
TLR needs this though. Really badly.

in a pinch Albert can play short :)
   41. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2868675)
he'll stay unless he hits a wall.
and then he'll still allow him to pitch.
   42. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2868676)
I doubt they'd go without a true SS, if you want Ryan sent down and Izturis gone.

Miles is a 2B who can sort of fake SS, and Barden is a 3B who can sort of fake SS. I think he'd want an actual SS, just in case.
   43. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2868677)
This whole bunting over plan would have been great if someone other than Izturis was up.
   44. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2868680)
we shouldn't have a lineup with both Kennedy and Izturis playing (of course I would also add Ryan meaning we should play Miles everyday, and I opposes Miles as an everyday player...I don't know.....)
   45. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:42 PM (#2868684)
Miles is a 2B who can sort of fake SS, and Barden is a 3B who can sort of fake SS

the quotes from the minors indicate Barden is thought of being a capable major league defensive shortstop, in fact they don't think he has the bat to be a corner player (he feels the same way)

as to Miles his defense at short was better last year than his defense at second base, this year his defense at second has improved (no I don't know the numbers, going by my eyes right now) and his shortstop defense hasn't been as good as last year, but it's more than passable for a team that has watched Renteria and Eckstein over the past few seasons.

for the record I do agree with you, that I doubt they release Izturis, I'm just stating my hopeful situations.
   46. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:42 PM (#2868686)
Gents, I know all that. Just wishful thinking. Lohse is a metronome out there tonight.....
   47. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:43 PM (#2868687)
The problem is all of the middle infielders are really bad. They all suck. So it's tough to advocate playing one of them, because none of them are good.

In short, call up Hoffpauir and Barden. Let him fake SS.
   48. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:43 PM (#2868688)
damn, not a good sequence of events. Fielder owns the Cardinals I think.
   49. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:43 PM (#2868689)
Gents, I know all that. Just wishful thinking. Lohse is a metronome out there tonight.....

All good things come to an end.
   50. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:44 PM (#2868696)
Basehit! Goodbye shutout, at least...
   51. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:45 PM (#2868697)
Well, it wasn't a HR.
   52. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:46 PM (#2868700)
Kapler should try a drag bunt......
   53. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:47 PM (#2868705)
fielder has his most homeruns against one opponet, against the Cardinals (and Houston, of course divisional play factors in here as his next two teams are the astros and cubs) still a .939 ops against us doesn't make me comfortable.
   54. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:48 PM (#2868710)
nice ugly play, but good play.
   55. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:48 PM (#2868711)
Kapler probably wishes he hadn't gotten out of bed this morning.
   56. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:48 PM (#2868714)
Whew, needed that. Nice strech, Albert.
   57. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2868720)
watching that fake bunt makes me wonder how much different this game would be if they didn't have force plays at first (or force plays didn't exist if men are on base)
   58. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:50 PM (#2868724)
It's why Gabe should have bunted. That changeup on the first pitch would have been the perfect pitch. I called it in advance so don't accuse me of hindsight.....
   59. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:51 PM (#2868725)
oh great Pujols is injured?
   60. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:53 PM (#2868729)
Geez... Hall with the Ankiel swing on the ultra-high fastball.
   61. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:53 PM (#2868731)
Thanks, Bill. Minimal damage that inning, I guess.
   62. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:53 PM (#2868741)
Geez... Hall with the Ankiel swing on the ultra-high fastball.

Hey now, that is the Jim Edmonds swing.
   63. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:55 PM (#2868749)
it's the long drive inning, if you are the guy who's name is picked for this, could you imagine a more perfect situation? ok Ludwick could have led off, but still.
   64. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:56 PM (#2868750)
oh great Pujols is injured?

What? No...he's on deck.
   65. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:56 PM (#2868757)
I think the 1st Long Drive inning of the year was by LaRue or something. But yes.
   66. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:57 PM (#2868759)
Suppan's salvaged a decent outing out of this one.
   67. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:58 PM (#2868761)
I have tickets to tomorrows game. My brothers first game at the new stadium.
   68. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 09:58 PM (#2868769)

What? No...he's on deck

they were focusing on him stretching after that play at first, and he was talking to the dugout and gesturing with his hands pointing to his right hamstring.
   69. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:01 PM (#2868784)
Rasmus tore up his knee in tonight's game?
   70. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:01 PM (#2868790)
Al and Dan are too worried about who is going to close, lets get to the ninth before we worry about that.
   71. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:02 PM (#2868796)
Glaus almost made it happen, got under it. Lohse may need to make this hold up.
   72. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:02 PM (#2868798)
Rasmus tore up his knee in tonight's game?

??? I thought he was still on the DL.
   73. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:03 PM (#2868805)
No, he started tonight (0-1), then was removed.

I found this: Possible torn MCL
   74. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:04 PM (#2868808)
what is Lohse pitch count?
   75. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:05 PM (#2868814)
88,89 coming in, I think.
   76. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:05 PM (#2868818)
No, he started tonight (0-1), then was removed.

ouch, he's starting to become a fragile player it seems.

(that pickel guy on StlToday is pretty good source of info)
   77. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:10 PM (#2868835)
I don't see Lohse pitching the ninth, he may campaign for it and TLR gives him the old "if a man gets on base I'm pulling you immediately" chance. (assuming he gets out of this inning in the next thee pitches)
   78. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:11 PM (#2868838)
Weeks makes it 3-2!
   79. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:11 PM (#2868840)
The Rasmus news is very bad. Not torn ACL bad, but very bad nonetheless.

And ####### Weeks smokes another ball.
   80. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:13 PM (#2868850)
did the Durham trade inspire Weeks to start playing?
   81. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:13 PM (#2868851)
Tie game!!!!!!!
   82. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:13 PM (#2868855)
####... ok, do we have anyone warming up in the pen?
   83. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:13 PM (#2868857)
#### me.

Skip made a poor throw there.
   84. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2868862)
####... ok, do we have anyone warming up in the pen?

McClellan.
   85. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2868865)
Villone is warming up... that just makes me so happy.
   86. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2868867)
Tiring Lohse vs. Braun says it all about what LaRussa thinks of his bullpen.
   87. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:15 PM (#2868869)
Yea!!!! end of the inning.
   88. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:17 PM (#2868872)
Tiring Lohse vs. Braun says it all about what LaRussa thinks of his bullpen.

Yeah, he thinks it sucks. Which happens to be the truth.
   89. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:17 PM (#2868876)
Tiring Lohse vs. Braun says it all about what LaRussa thinks of his bullpen.
actually it says more about TLR wanting to give Lohse a chance to continue his winning streak. (I think)
   90. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:17 PM (#2868877)
Ryan has not had a single good swing these two games.
   91. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:19 PM (#2868882)
Jeez, thanks Al.

"rick ankiel when facing a lefty who throws a good pitch, has a chance of making an out, but if the lefty hangs one, Rick can kill the ball"

what next, water is wet?
   92. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:19 PM (#2868883)
actually it says more about TLR wanting to give Lohse a chance to continue his winning streak. (I think)

You think TLR is the sort, in a potentially game-changing situation, who would put streaks ahead of his team's chances to win?

If he had no confidence in his bullpen, and thought Lohse was the best option, that's one thing. What you're proposing is another.
   93. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:21 PM (#2868887)
You have to love this matchup. Dang Molina just swing at the first pitch. Ok I was about to say that Molina is killing lefties this season and it should be a good matchup. (.370 .448 .533 .980 )
   94. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2868891)
Ok, that was lackluster. At least the Cards don't have Izturis coming up in the 9th - oh, wait.
   95. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2868892)

at times yes I do, he's very loyal to his players and will do stuff that is in the players best interest over the teams.

I honestly think it was a mix of both, if he had confidence in his pen he would have pulled Lohse before the tying run reached scoring position.
   96. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:25 PM (#2868902)
Ok, that was lackluster. At least the Cards don't have Izturis coming up in the 9th - oh, wait.

I would give 50/50 odds that Izturis bats next inning. If Miles gets on base then Izturis may sacrifice, but if Miles makes an out, I think Mather has a chance of batting. (of course with a short bench who knows anymore)
   97. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:25 PM (#2868908)
Sorry Prince, but that was a strike.
   98. cardsfanboy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:28 PM (#2868915)
I do like watching Izturis play defense when he is playing good.
   99. NTNgod Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:28 PM (#2868916)
HALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
   100. Guts Posted: July 22, 2008 at 10:29 PM (#2868922)
Unbefuckinglieveable.
