I got a message from a friend that Buchholz is shut down for the season, including playoffs. Also heard it on WEEI.

No word of why.
   2. Darren Posted: September 28, 2007 at 06:14 PM (#2548349)
I just linked the Boston.com article. Their routine tests on his arm showed he was fatiguing.
   3. Dan Posted: September 28, 2007 at 07:15 PM (#2548424)
No one else watching tonight?

Matsuzaka with a good first inning, his stuff looked good again.
   4. PJ Martinez Posted: September 28, 2007 at 07:23 PM (#2548435)
Yes, it did.

I wonder if Manny will stick in the 2-hole? Seems unlikely.

I didn't realize that Manny's rate stats were still better than Lowell's, as disappointing as they've been.
   5. Dan Posted: September 28, 2007 at 07:26 PM (#2548447)
Well when a guy is usually producing to the tune of a 1.000+ OPS, then it's understandable that his down years are still pretty good.
   6. Dan Posted: September 28, 2007 at 07:28 PM (#2548451)
Nice AB for Drew there, dunking one in.
   7. plink Posted: September 28, 2007 at 07:44 PM (#2548489)
I'm all for getting Manny more at-bats per game, as well as keeping Crisp, Lugo, or (shudder) Cora out of the top 2 in the lineup.
   8. Dan Posted: September 28, 2007 at 07:44 PM (#2548490)
Damn Cuddyer made a nice catch to rob Jacoby there. Why the #### did the Twins ever screw with him by mvoing him around to 3b, 2b, etc?
   9. karlmagnus Posted: September 28, 2007 at 07:45 PM (#2548493)
Are there any good young catchers out there this winter? Cappy needs to be relegated to backup for the last year of his contract.

Are there any good young catchers out there this winter?

If you're asking whether said catchers are available, the answer is kind of by definition no. I was holding out hope the Cubs would continue to bury Geovany Soto (esp. after the Kendall trade), and that he could be acquired on the cheap, but seems unlikely now.
   11. plink Posted: September 28, 2007 at 07:57 PM (#2548527)
Mmm. Pedroia seemed out on the replay.

Manny tries to make up for it, and Punto refuses to give in.
   12. Darren Posted: September 28, 2007 at 07:59 PM (#2548534)
Speaking of OPS+, Ortiz's has gone up for 7 years in a row. And there's another hit. Ho hum. This September is the best calendar month of his career.
   13. Darren Posted: September 28, 2007 at 07:59 PM (#2548539)
Manny probably should have scored but I don't want him running hard or getting in a collision.
   14. Nick Warino Posted: September 28, 2007 at 08:09 PM (#2548577)
Jason Kubel has already cut at least an inning of Dice-K's start.

This series has my interest more than usual because we are a different team than what we had at the World cup and India are looking hot, right now

We barely had a break from the T-20 world cup. But Tendulkar should be fresh. I am hoping he smashes Lee to all parts of the park.
   19. PJ Martinez Posted: September 28, 2007 at 08:23 PM (#2548642)
Just eyeballing the stats at mlb.com, there are four catchers in MLB this year with more than 400 ABs and a better OPS than Varitek. (McCann is 9 points behind him, as is Kelly Shoppach; Bard is 18 points behind.)

I don't see a likely upgrade next year.
   20. Darren Posted: September 28, 2007 at 08:25 PM (#2548647)

McCann??

Wow

I might ease up on the Captain then...
   23. PJ Martinez Posted: September 28, 2007 at 08:30 PM (#2548668)
Yeah, Varitek may actually have become underrated among Therapudlians. Catcher has got to be the thinnest position, talent-wise, in the big leagues.

I am guessing you heard his "pop single" too.
Nah, just don't like anyone on the current Au team other than Ponting and Symonds. Used to eb a big fan of mcgrath and Warne ( esp his text messages ), but now...meh

Can't believe mcCann is behind him. hid ankle injury and Sept slump is really slwoing him down. mcCann is way better than varitek

That was a terrible song!!

Wanrie is god like to me, and in my eyes can't do no wrong.

I'm a big Hussey fan, but don't care much for Michael Clarke. Love Gilly though. I wish I could find you the highlights of his century in Perth when he almost broke the fastest 100 record set by Viv (Vlad lookalike) Richards against the Poms.
   27. PJ Martinez Posted: September 28, 2007 at 08:42 PM (#2548712)
No sane person would take Varitek over McCann, who last year put up offensive numbers that Varitek has never approached. Plus, of course, he's got his whole career ahead of him. But, at least by a crude measure, Varitek has been slightly better, offensively, this year.

My main point was that there actually aren't that many catchers out there better than Varitek, frustrating as he can be at times.

I know I'm jinxing him and everything, but Matsuzaka has not walked anyone yet.

Maybe the best thing about this outing so far.

I saw that actually. Long live P2P streaming!!! Somehow never liked Gilly since his incident with Slater. I used to be a big Slater fan.
hayden And Gilly are both gonan struggle with lefties swinging the ball into him..Thats India's only hope.

Tendulkar and Yuvraj will win us atleast 4 matches at home

Dice-K tonight for some reason is making me think of D-Lowe: sometimes dominant, frequently and infuriatingly mediocre. He's been great in this game; maybe they've succeeded in getting him enough rest to straighten him out.
   35. PJ Martinez Posted: September 28, 2007 at 08:47 PM (#2548745)
Best outing for Matsuzaka in a while.

Against a team that's never seen him.

Coincidence?
   36. plink Posted: September 28, 2007 at 08:50 PM (#2548753)
Ah, well. Ends 11 consecutive times on base for Ortiz.

Remember last year when Lowell hit all his doubles in the first half, and none (or so it seemed) in the second half?

A lot different this year. The epitome of contract year production.

Hayden keeps on proving everyone wrong, it is insane. I'd love to see Yuvraj to continue doing well, he can turn a game in a blink of an eye. I love Tendulker and hope he is ready for 2-3 years of kick ass cricket. Can't wait for the test series in December- January...

How cool is this...

Today is the grand final for Aussie Rules and we are having a party, straight after it finishes, the cricket comes on!!!

Sports bonanza at the Coorey house!!

Drew being Drew there

I thin this India-Aus series depends on hayden-gilly. If we get them both, think we can handle Hodge/Clarke and Voges.

Depends on how Hogg does too
   53. Dan Posted: September 28, 2007 at 09:04 PM (#2548812)
Baltimore seems to be beating up on Mussina, eh?
   54. Chip Posted: September 28, 2007 at 09:05 PM (#2548815)
This is why you can't count on the Orioles to complete the comeback, despite the big inning: with Mussina throwing BP in the inning, dumbass Hernandez makes the final out AT THIRD BASE.

Then of course there's the fact that Victor Zambrano is pitching.
   55. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: September 28, 2007 at 09:05 PM (#2548816)
It's a visual effect with Varitek, I think. We react to the fact that he can look SO BAD at the plate.

The cricket was a joke. I couldn't stand teh fact that teams lost so many games and still made the semi finals.

Damn, I forgot that Hussey was out.

Also in case you wanted to know, my least favourite cricketer is Shane Fukking Watson

Watson by all accounts is a total ########, but what shits me the most is Australia keep on picking him.

They became obsessed with finding an all rounder after the ashes 2005 fiasco and Flintoff peaking for once in his career.
