Interesting lineup.

Am I all alone tonight?

*waves*

I might be back later.

I'm surprised that Hinske isn't starting in place of either Lowell or Youkilis.

Did you see that Maine struck out 14? Taking a no-no into the 8th is plenty impressive, obviously, but it's that K-line that I'm wowed by.
   5. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:17 PM (#2550412)
Manny, Lugo, Drew among those who missed the celebration last night. Gagne, Youkilis, and Varitek had also left, but were close enough to the park when the Orioles one that they turned around and came back.

Tito deadpanned to the media this afternoon, "I will make Manny aware that we are the AL East champs."
   6. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:18 PM (#2550413)
When the Orioles "won."
   7. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:19 PM (#2550415)
The Captain had left?
   8. PJ Martinez Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:20 PM (#2550416)
Chip, did you see this exchange, from The Sporting News?

Manny: Let me borrow your phone.
Terry: Huh? Who are you calling?
Manny: No one. The Dominican.
Terry: The Dominican?
Manny: Let me borrow it. I'll call Brazil.
Terry: I don't think so.
Manny: Let's go to the Cheesecake Factory.

Damn I'm sad I missed seeing that Papelbon dancing last night.
   12. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:30 PM (#2550430)
I thought the Twins were supposed to be good at fundamentals.
   13. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:32 PM (#2550434)
Why the #### is he swinging 3-0
   14. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:33 PM (#2550435)
Man, I was just looking at the NL standings and running through scenarios...the Pads just lost in extras, so I think if NY, Philly, and SD lose tomorrow while the Rockies win...then we have a 4-way tie?!?
   15. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:33 PM (#2550437)
Manny's wife is from Brazil, isn't she? See, there's always some logic to it.
   16. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:33 PM (#2550438)
Thanks for playing, Royce.
   17. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:34 PM (#2550445)
So was Paps actually dancing a passable Irish jig there or what? I have no idea.
   18. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:37 PM (#2550447)
My guess is that he was doing some version of the Texas two-step. It only looked like a jig.
   19. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:47 PM (#2550468)
Youk's special ladyfriend isn't exactly lighting the booth on fire.
   20. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:48 PM (#2550469)
Yankees and Cleveland both down early.
   21. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:48 PM (#2550470)
I don't think that was obvious enough that you wouldn't check it. Weak call.
   22. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:50 PM (#2550474)
Man, I was just looking at the NL standings and running through scenarios...the Pads just lost in extras, so I think if NY, Philly, and SD lose tomorrow while the Rockies win...then we have a 4-way tie?!?

Your idea is right, but SD needs to lose with Rockies winning both tonight and tomorrow, and both NYM and PHI winning as well.
   23. PJ Martinez Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:57 PM (#2550484)
Keep it up, Drew. Keep it up.
   24. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:58 PM (#2550488)
Yeah, that makes more sense. Thanks, Dan.

Wow, almost caught by Hunter. That would've been a heck of a grab.

YOUK!
   25. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:58 PM (#2550489)
Now this is what the Sox should have been doing to Silva earlier.
   26. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:58 PM (#2550490)
Hey, does anyone know if Phil's a daddy yet?
   27. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 07:59 PM (#2550493)
I'd absolutely love to see at least a 3 way tie in the NL, if not the 4 way mess. I guess the resident Mets fans would probably immolate in stress, but as a baseball fan it would be very entertaining.
   28. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:01 PM (#2550497)
Youkilis's baserunning this year has been pretty horrid.
   29. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:01 PM (#2550499)
In that situation, would the winner of the season series between NY-Philly be in or would they both get thrown in to some nutty playoff thing?
   30. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:02 PM (#2550500)
Pretty sure they'd all be involved in a playoff.
   31. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:02 PM (#2550502)
Dougie :(
   32. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:03 PM (#2550504)
Wow, GJ Clayton.
   33. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:03 PM (#2550505)
Roycie double :(
   34. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:04 PM (#2550507)
He's managed to be involved in three outs while seeing like 5 pitches. Bravo.
   35. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:08 PM (#2550511)
Wow, 3 outs in 5 pitches over 2 at-bats, and now an error.
   36. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:09 PM (#2550512)
And now an E6. Christ.
   37. tfbg9 Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:10 PM (#2550517)
Wake sucks tonight. Must be a big game or sorts.
   38. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:11 PM (#2550520)
I hope to god that no team is considering Farrell for a manager's position.
   39. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:12 PM (#2550522)
Meaning he doesn't deserve it or it'd hurt to lose him?
   40. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:15 PM (#2550524)
That inning was a lot less shitty than I expected.
   41. tfbg9 Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:17 PM (#2550526)
*of sorts*
   42. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:17 PM (#2550527)
Nice escape job.
   43. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:17 PM (#2550528)
Meaning I'd hate to see the Sox lose him, PJ. Sorry if that was unclear. He seems to have worked wonders with Beckett, Okajima, even Lester seems to have improved greatly under him as the season has gone along (although it's hard to say how much of that is coaching and how much is regaining strength). But according to the SI article, he also helped Papelbon smooth out his mechanics a good deal this year, plus MDC has been very good, even Timlin has improved tons. Obviously these things aren't 100% attributable to him, but I'd be surprised if he doesn't deserve a lot of the credit.
   44. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:19 PM (#2550529)
You suck Cora.
   45. tfbg9 Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:23 PM (#2550531)
Pettite seems to be getting his as$ handed to him, and the Tribe trails early in KC, 2-3.

Hey Chip. Congtrats.
   46. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:24 PM (#2550532)
Yankees - O's tied at 6 now.
   47. tfbg9 Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:25 PM (#2550533)
Our chance for best MLB season record may be slipping away. :(
   48. PJ Martinez Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:26 PM (#2550534)
9-6 Yanks.
   49. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:26 PM (#2550537)
I wish I could say I had enough to do with it to deserve congrats.
   50. PJ Martinez Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:27 PM (#2550539)
Even if the Sox lose and Cleveland wins tonight, home-field in the ALCS (and choice of playoff options) will still be alive. We only need to tie Cleveland to get it.
   51. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:27 PM (#2550540)
Does Clayton have cinderblocks attached to his feet or something? That jump was sad.
   52. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:27 PM (#2550541)
Everything about Clayton has been sad tonight.
   53. tfbg9 Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:28 PM (#2550542)
Wake=total crap these days, sadly. Maybe we ought to use Lester as the #4?

I'm sure km blames me, for tuning in.
   54. PJ Martinez Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:28 PM (#2550543)
"Wake sucks tonight. Must be a big game of sorts."

Is this intentional self-parody or unintentional? I can't tell.
   55. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:28 PM (#2550544)
Yankees now lead 9-6, they've scored 8 runs in the 4th while making 1 out.
   56. PJ Martinez Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:28 PM (#2550545)
km blames... Jimy, I think? Whoever it was who compromised Wakefield's shot at the Hall. Damn him.
   57. PJ Martinez Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:29 PM (#2550547)
Lester was mediocre in his last start, too. But if we use a fourth starter against the Angels, it should be Lester.
   58. tfbg9 Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:30 PM (#2550548)
Wake = BP. He's absolute sh!t. Thanks for another brutal, semi-depressing loss, Timmy. Even the outs are stentorian.

That said, good times.
   59. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:31 PM (#2550550)
hhahaha I really do like Wakefield, but he just isn't consistent enough to depend on for a big start, honestly. I mean I don't think he sucks in big games per se, just that on a given day he'll either be good or suck, and it's dependent on stuff like weather conditions and his feel for the knuckler, etc. Just not the guy you want to depend on to win a game in the playoffs, even if over the balance ofa season he has good value with 180+ average to above-average innings.
   60. tfbg9 Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:33 PM (#2550551)
Is this intentional self-parody or unintentional? I can't tell.

Its facetious, self-effacing, and cranky. I am sick of thge Wake however, as everybody is annoyingly aware of.

I am terrified of him anywhere near a playoff start, especially against the MFY's.
   61. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:33 PM (#2550552)
Wow, Lowell crushed that.
   62. tfbg9 Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:33 PM (#2550553)
That was well hit, Mikey-Doodle.
   63. PJ Martinez Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:34 PM (#2550554)
Yeah, but against Cleveland, I still think Wakefield/Lester is a push. Maybe start Lester, with Wakefield ready if he can't give you many innings (the role I would have loved to see Buchholz in).
   64. tfbg9 Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:34 PM (#2550555)
Wake never had any shot at the Hall, guys, never.
   65. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:34 PM (#2550556)
There have been some impressive XBHs against Silva tonight. Unfortunately, not enough of them have been strung back-to-back, what with Royce Clayton and Alex Cora and Doug Mirabelli always around to snuff a rally.
   66. PJ Martinez Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:35 PM (#2550557)
"Its facetious, self-effacing, and cranky. I am sick of thge Wake however, as everybody is annoyingly aware of."

Gotcha. The Sox need to win behind Beckett, Schilling and possibly Matsuzaka to get through the playoffs. A win behind either Wakefield or Lester would be an unexpected bonus.
   67. PJ Martinez Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:36 PM (#2550558)
"Wake never had any shot at the Hall, guys, never."

Yeah, I was just having a small amount of fun at karlmagnus's expense. The two of you going back and forth on Wakefield is kind of amusing, for the sheer contrast.
   68. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:36 PM (#2550559)
O's finally get the second out of the 4th. Ten runs in already.
   69. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:36 PM (#2550560)
Yeah. I'm just glad the Sox don't have to face Cleveland in the short series.
   70. tfbg9 Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:37 PM (#2550561)
And may, as I usually do, I add that Wake is a fine human being?
   71. karlmagnus Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:38 PM (#2550563)
Wake's not been right since his injury, but this is his second start in succession with 4 runs in 6 innings which is not a disaster if the Sox had any offense. Given the way he was pitching before the injury; this isn't inconsistency, he's injured.

Having said that, if his back is going to play up every year he won't go on all that much longer. Pity. Still, 16 wins is 16 wins and he's a perfectly decent playoff 4th starter if we need one, particularly if it's not till the ALCS so he's had time to get fresh.

Also, tfbg9, I was hoping you wouldn't be here tonight, so Wake could pitch a no-hitter. You will go play in the traffic if he starts a playoff game, won't you. Would be a pity to waste it.
   72. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:39 PM (#2550565)
I'd love to have Wake stay around as swingman/mopup guy if nothing else for the forseeable future. But I'd prefer to see a Beckett - Matsuzaka - Buchholz - Lester - Schilling / Masterson / whoever rotation for next year, I think.
   73. tfbg9 Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:39 PM (#2550566)
Personally, I'm still kinda shocked the the O's won last night. They are really really bad. Leonard Pinth-Garnell bad.
   74. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:40 PM (#2550567)
Would Dougie going deep be too much to ask? Guessing yes
   75. tfbg9 Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:40 PM (#2550568)

You're mean.
   76. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:40 PM (#2550570)
And what the hell is with the confederate gray color scheme for the AL East Championship hats?
   77. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:41 PM (#2550571)
I'd be on Mirabelli more for that godawful check swing there for strike two if I hadn't already seen Manny do the same thing on that pitch in this game.
   78. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:42 PM (#2550573)
Two runs on 9 ####### hits.
   79. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:42 PM (#2550574)
Silva shouldn't be celebrating like he's Joba Chamberlain just because he struck out Mirabelli.
   80. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:42 PM (#2550575)
9 hits, 4 of which (?) are XBH?
   81. tfbg9 Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:43 PM (#2550576)
Don't get me wrong, Wake is a fairly valuable pitcher in the regular season at 4 million especially, I just think he's spooked in the big spots for the last 4 years or so, and cannot, and will not beat the MFY's period.

He needs to get the bad back thing fixed, because a lot of his value is as an innings eater, IMO.
   82. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:43 PM (#2550577)
And what the hell is with the confederate gray color scheme for the AL East Championship hats?

It's the same cap for all the division champs. Blame MLB and New Era, or whoever they gave the license to.
   83. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:43 PM (#2550579)
How is Cleveland setting up their #3 and #4 for the playoffs? Westbrook/Byrd or vice versa?
   84. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:44 PM (#2550580)
That being the case, you'd think they'd at least go with navy blue.
   85. tfbg9 Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:44 PM (#2550581)
Hey, km's binky got a leadoff out.
   86. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:45 PM (#2550583)
Why the hell is Wakefield even still pitching
   87. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:46 PM (#2550584)

What's Schilling going to want next year to be the same type of pitcher?
   88. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:46 PM (#2550585)
Oh look, Timmy's first K of the night.
   89. PJ Martinez Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:49 PM (#2550590)
"Why the hell is Wakefield even still pitching"

Good question. I assume he's done now. 92 pitches isn't terribly many, but it would be truly baffling if he went out for the 8th. If Tito cared that much about winning this game, Clayton wouldn't be at SS, obviously.
   90. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:50 PM (#2550591)
That being the case, you'd think they'd at least go with navy blue.

Far worse than the cap is the incessant pimping for the $150 commemorative bat they were doing both last night and tonight on NESN.
   91. karlmagnus Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:50 PM (#2550592)
7IP for 3IP is I believe the definition of a Quality Start -- ERA of 3.86. Not Wake's fault if they let Royce Clayton play SS.
   92. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:50 PM (#2550593)
######## about a guy who gives up 3 earned over 7 innings might be a reason why other teams' fans hate us.
   93. PJ Martinez Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:51 PM (#2550595)
"7IP for 3IP is I believe the definition of a Quality Start -- ERA of 3.86. Not Wake's fault if they let Royce Clayton play SS."

Not to mention that if this were July or August, Wakefield could go out there for the next inning, sparing the bullpen.

Moot tonight, obviously.
   94. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:52 PM (#2550597)
Well, Cora tried to hit into the inning ending DP.
   95. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:52 PM (#2550598)
He only gave up 3 earned, but he was terribly lucky to only allow that many with all of 1 strikeout over those innings.
   96. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:53 PM (#2550600)
Plus, this is the ####### Twins offense, not exactly a juggernaut. Third from last in runs scored in the AL.
   97. Mattbert Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:54 PM (#2550601)
Aside from the homers, though, the Twins didn't hit many balls with authority. Then again, it's the Twins.
   98. Chip Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:55 PM (#2550603)

It's too Bad Beckett wasn't aware of that.
   99. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:55 PM (#2550605)
Nice, nice. Cmon JD Drew!
   100. Dan Posted: September 29, 2007 at 08:56 PM (#2550607)
Also, I'm pretty sure Crisp catches that ball standing up.
