OK, I really feel like the Mets can still pull this season out.

Is this game on TV?
   6. Dan Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:01 PM (#2961543)
TBS
   7. tfbg9 Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:03 PM (#2961545)
Allright! TBSHD!
   8. Lassus Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:05 PM (#2961546)
I was really rooting for the Twins (no dog in the fight, personal preferences) but I have to say that simply the presence of Alexei Ramirez may have turned me around.
   9. tfbg9 Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:07 PM (#2961549)
I have no rooting intrest either.
   10. Jose Can Jussi Jokinen (Justin T) Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:10 PM (#2961552)
Omg, there are FrankTV ads again! I assumed that show was toast or that at least TBS would have something different to bombard us with this year. But they've got new episodes to tell us about! Unreal. Good thing I have to leave soon and can fast forward through the commercials when I get home.
   11. Dan Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:12 PM (#2961554)
I think TBS has done a good job getting analysts this year, although they still have mostly shitty play-by-play guys.
   12. Lassus Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:15 PM (#2961557)
TBS was a godsend in relief of horrendous FOX last year, and even with Dick Stockton involved, I have no doubt it will be the same this year. Unless they started to emulate FOX, which I pray they didn't for this year. It was rather subdued coverage, comparably.
   13. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:25 PM (#2961565)
TBS is already on pregame.

Things I want to see in this game:
Twins win
AJ Pierzynski getting hit by pitch
Morneau passes Pedroia for RBI title, causing a long debate as whether tiebreaker stats should "count"
Ozzie Guillen does a rude hand gesture on live TV
Griffey shows a flash of youth and makes a spectacular catch
Dane Cook runs onto the field screaming "THERE'S ONLY ONE OCTOBER!", and is then promptly beaten to death.
   14. Dan Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2961570)
Morneau passes Pedroia for RBI title, causing a long debate as whether tiebreaker stats should "count"

He's already got about 40 more RBi than Pedroia.
   15. Dan Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:31 PM (#2961573)
46, actually, after looking it up.
   16. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:32 PM (#2961576)
"He's {Alexei Ramirez) a great baseball player."

Uh, no Harold.

He's already got about 40 more RBi than Pedroia.

Err.. I meant Hamilton. But I think if he wins RBI he'll get the edge for MVP over Pedroia and everyone else.
   18. The Answer to the TWolves (GMoney) Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:32 PM (#2961579)
Any bets on what crooked way Pierzynski will find to win this game? I have he planted a file in Blackburn's pocket.
   19. Dan Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:33 PM (#2961580)
According to Ron Darling, Torii Hunter was the Twins' best player. Riiiighhht....

Not if the Twins don't win.

Voters sent in their MVP ballots before game 163 last year. They probably did again this time.
   22. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:34 PM (#2961584)
In many ways, Pierzynski is the reason this game is taking place. If he hadn't done his "OH, sorry I ran into you, but now you just obstructed me, jackass" routine. In fact, if I were the Twins, I would have filed a complaint right back then about it.
   23. The Answer to the TWolves (GMoney) Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:35 PM (#2961586)
Like Selig has any balls to overturn something like that.

According to Ron Darling, Torii Hunter was the Twins' best player. Riiiighhht....

He was at one point. Of course, that was about 6 years ago when Joe Mauer was considered a reach over Mark Prior and Justin Morneau was still playing hockey.
   25. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:36 PM (#2961588)
Also, let me just say that coin flip is a stupid ida to determine who hosts these things. They should go by who had better head-to-head record getting the home field (not sure who that is in this case).
   26. Guts Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:37 PM (#2961590)
This is the first game I've been able to watch live for a while - I'm excited.
   27. tfbg9 Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:37 PM (#2961591)
Danks is a really really promising pitcher.
   28. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:37 PM (#2961592)
Shouldn't the Sox be wearing their black uni tops to go with the "blackout" theme? And while we're on the subject, isn't it a bad idea to pass out black towels? Very funeral-like.
   29. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:38 PM (#2961595)
If the Sox fans had any brains they would have had everyone dress in white. wouldn't have caused as much of an effect as it would during the day time, but......
   30. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:38 PM (#2961596)
Griffey playing CF? That's just horrific.
   31. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:39 PM (#2961598)
The Twins won the season series 10-8, Gamingboy.

This was possibly the most important of all the possible coinflips. The Sox usually curbstomp the Twins in Chicago, and should do the same tonight.
   32. The Answer to the TWolves (GMoney) Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:40 PM (#2961599)
Bunting here is so dumb, 1 run isn't going to win this game I'd guess.
   33. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:40 PM (#2961600)
The Twins won the season series 10-8, Gamingboy.

See, in my opinion they should have the team that won the season series get the homefield and only use the flip if they split the season series.
   34. Lassus Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:40 PM (#2961601)
After labor day? Ewwwwww.
   35. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:41 PM (#2961602)
Hmm. Should have bunted.
   36. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:41 PM (#2961603)
####.
   37. Lassus Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:42 PM (#2961604)
Maybe they should have had everyone wear suits and hats, throw-back style.
   38. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:43 PM (#2961605)
Maybe they should have everyone wear Cubs jerseys. Just to screw with everybody.
   39. Guts Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:43 PM (#2961606)
Poor luck, aggressiveness not helping out early.

Now Mauer Ks.
   40. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:43 PM (#2961607)
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Frank TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!
   41. The Answer to the TWolves (GMoney) Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:45 PM (#2961609)
They should have the manager and coaches wear suits, like the NBA and NHL.
   42. Lassus Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:45 PM (#2961610)
This DirectTV commercial is totally ruining my memory of 1994.
   43. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:45 PM (#2961611)
Bah. I think the "blackout" is cool. I mean, just look how well it worked for Georg-

Oh.

(In all fairness, the Winnipeg Jets/Pheonix Coyotes institute a "whiteout" theme for the playoffs and they've never won ####.)
   44. The Answer to the TWolves (GMoney) Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:45 PM (#2961612)
I'm very wary of Blackburn here in the 1st, I think if it makes it out of the 1st he should do OK though.
   45. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:46 PM (#2961613)
Okay, how many runs will Blackburn have to give up for Liriano or another starter to warm-up?
   46. Lassus Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:46 PM (#2961614)
If Blackburn falters, is it all hands?
   47. Lassus Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:47 PM (#2961617)
GREAT MINDS!
   48. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:47 PM (#2961618)
HA HA, Lassus.
   49. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:48 PM (#2961619)
Managers are retarded? What's with ####### bunting in the first inning? You're not facing Doc Halladay in Petco park.
   50. andrewberg of udub law Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:48 PM (#2961620)
Joe Christensen says that Liriano is off the table for today because they don't want any risk of hurting him. I'm ok with that.

Baker is scheduled for a bullpen session today, so he could go an inning. Slowey's wrist is still hurt, so he's not an option.
   51. Guts Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:49 PM (#2961621)
That was a atypical DP. But it worked.
   52. JJ1986 Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:49 PM (#2961622)
Managers are retarded? What's with ####### bunting in the first inning? You're not facing Doc Halladay in Petco park.

It's DeWayne Wise. It's not like he's going to get on base if he doesn't bunt.
   53. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:49 PM (#2961623)
Double play! Nice rundown.
   54. The Answer to the TWolves (GMoney) Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:49 PM (#2961624)
Twins are horrible at rundowns, least they got the job done.
   55. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:49 PM (#2961625)
Smart play by Punto to start that DP by throwing to first, but what a cluster-#### of a rundown afterwards.

It's so weird that the fundamentally sound Twins would be so bad at rundowns. They did the same thing a couple of times during that series in Minnesota.
   60. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:52 PM (#2961631)
Ah. I fail "Know Your Twins Middle Infielders".
   61. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:52 PM (#2961632)
Morneau cometh.
   62. The Answer to the TWolves (GMoney) Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:53 PM (#2961634)
Time for Morneau to do something, he has been horrible the last 3 weeks. He really should have no shot at MVP, since Mauer is more valuable than he is. But if he does something tonight I'm all for giving him the award over Joe.
   63. Lassus Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:53 PM (#2961636)
These baby commercials make me want to kick that baby. Is that really what they were going for?
   64. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:54 PM (#2961638)
I'm gonna predict that the first team to score will be the winner.
   65. Dan Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2961639)
Morneau only has 23 home runs?
   66. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2961640)
It is Josh Hamilton's fault Texas isn't in the playoffs. What, couldn't he pitch, too? Jeez.
   67. Lassus Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2961641)
whiffffffff

The Twins look like the Mets. TIGHT.
   68. JJ1986 Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2961642)
Nice pitch, but Morneau did not look good.
   69. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:56 PM (#2961643)
Mauer and Morneau looked overmatched.
   70. The Joe Mauer Power Hour (kj) Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:56 PM (#2961644)

Fewest ever by a HR Derby "champion"?

   72. andrewberg of udub law Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:56 PM (#2961646)
GMoney- i bet the Twins could have the Answer for an expiring contract.
   73. Guts Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:56 PM (#2961647)
This "blackout" is really working!
   74. The Joe Mauer Power Hour (kj) Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:57 PM (#2961648)
I like the Ozzie Guillen Gatorade towel scarf look.
   75. Lassus Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:58 PM (#2961649)
Maybe this game will get in under two hours.
   76. Guts Posted: September 30, 2008 at 07:58 PM (#2961650)

Too bad Buerhle isn't pitching...

No, it wasn't. It had a goat because goats are inherently funny animals.
   80. andrewberg of udub law Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:01 PM (#2961654)
I meant twolves in 72. oh well.

Anything to taunt chicago is fine with me today.

Umpire screwing Blackburn right now.
   82. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:01 PM (#2961656)
That was a strike.
   83. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2961657)
So all of the stats count in the regular season, they play with the expanded regular season rosters...but there's a six-umpire crew?
   84. The Answer to the TWolves (GMoney) Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2961658)
That pitch was right down the middle of the plate, call a damn strike.
   85. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2961659)
Harold Baines is ill?
   86. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:03 PM (#2961661)
And none of those six umpires could successfully identify that 3-2 pitch as a strike. Hmm.
   87. andrewberg of udub law Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:03 PM (#2961662)
83- I think the 6 umpire crew would be used in all games if it was a workable allocation of resources. Coordinating and paying for 6 guys is not worth the effort in the regular season, but that constraint is inoperable today.
   88. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:03 PM (#2961663)
MCCLELLAND!!!! I WILL FIND YOU IF THAT BALL...

Okay, it was caught...
   89. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:03 PM (#2961664)
Thome feeling spry.
   90. andrewberg of udub law Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2961665)
3B ump should've rung up Thome on that check swing to make up for the 2-2 pitch.
   91. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2961666)
Griffey scares me to death. He's got nothing to lose.
   92. andrewberg of udub law Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2961667)
I'm still scared of Griffey. That long foul validated the chills I get when I see his bat waggle.
   93. andrewberg of udub law Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:05 PM (#2961668)
Our reverence was rewarded, huh, gamingboy?
   94. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:06 PM (#2961669)
Ks Griffey. Thank god. O crap, it's the Cuban.

Is there an official rule in the rule book as to the size of "regular season" vs. "postseason/exhibition" umpiring crews? I'm guessing there is not. If there was, and this is a "regular season" game, there should be 4 umpires.

BTW: I agree with you; I'd love to see six-ump reg. season crews, if possible.
   96. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:07 PM (#2961671)
A six-ump reg. could get some good publicity for MLB as well, as it would make it more likely that woman could get to the MLB crews.
   97. Lassus Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:07 PM (#2961672)
Play-in games, game 163, has been 6 umps for awhile.
   98. andrewberg of udub law Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:08 PM (#2961673)
Ramirez is like Yankee-era Soriano with better range and a hare more discipline. If he traded places with Cano, he'd be thought of as the next Honus Wagner.
   99. The Answer to the TWolves (GMoney) Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:08 PM (#2961674)
This inning should be over by now.
   100. Gamingboy Posted: September 30, 2008 at 08:08 PM (#2961675)
With all due respect to Mcclelland, but if I know a umpire's name and it is NOT Klem or Connolly, he cannot be considered a truly good umpire.

Oh, here's that ####### AJ.
