Man, three straight games with Grace. Blah.

I put the game on EI and heard Grace, I quickly changed to TBS and saw Chip, I quickly went back to Grace.

Would you rather be punched in the face or in the stomach?

This is quite the pitching matchup.

Stomach.

I am muting this.

Shoddy defense.

Nice job by Schneider to draw the walk after falling behind 0-2.
   12. JJ1986 Posted: May 04, 2008 at 04:50 PM (#2768641)
Castillo looked out on the FC to me, but that was as close as it could be.

this Santana fellow is highly skilled
   18. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:06 PM (#2768672)
It's amazing how often Santana will throw a fastball right down the middle and get away with it because hitters are guessing change.

Boom!
   20. JJ1986 Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:11 PM (#2768678)
The Dbacks play by play guy said that Reynolds missed the popup because he was playing Beltran to pull or was too far from it. Mark Grace had to correct him.
   21. Alan S Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:13 PM (#2768680)
It is extremely encouraging to see Delgado hitting the ball hard against Webb and Haren the past few days.
   22. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:16 PM (#2768681)
I missed the homer, nuts.
   23. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:17 PM (#2768684)
Delgado's "peripherals" are respectable. He has a respectable amount of homers and is drawing walks at a nice clip. His BABIP is only .222 entering the game today despite a 18.8 LD%. He isn't striking out a ton either. If he can continue to do what he is doing and his luck turns, he should have a solid year.
   24. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:20 PM (#2768691)
Justin Upton is a really big guy.
   25. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:20 PM (#2768692)
Is Schneider REALLY that good defensively? The early evidence says no.
   26. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:22 PM (#2768696)
####.
   27. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:25 PM (#2768699)
I'm getting really tired of these wild pitches/passed balls.
   28. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:25 PM (#2768701)
More excuses for Schneider.
   29. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:25 PM (#2768700)
What's up with Schneider? Block the ball.
   30. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:28 PM (#2768702)
"Voice of Josh Byrnes"? Who's body is that?
   31. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:30 PM (#2768703)
Johan is already at 73, which means he is probably going to only go six.
   32. Dan Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:35 PM (#2768704)
Snyder and Schneider as the opposing catchers is kind of confusing.
   33. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:39 PM (#2768706)
Augie Ojeda has really played well the last two games, noth offensively and defensively.
   34. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:40 PM (#2768708)
Snyder and Schneider as the opposing catchers is kind of confusing.

It's easy to tell them apart. The one on the Mets can't get a XBH or block any pitches.
   35. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:44 PM (#2768713)
The one on the Mets will also call for a ball then let it drop.
   36. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:44 PM (#2768714)
Did that really just happen?
   37. JJ1986 Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:45 PM (#2768715)
I hate Schneider.
   38. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:46 PM (#2768717)
Cohen gets off on pitch counts.
   39. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:47 PM (#2768719)
Schneider is like a flailing turd back there.
   40. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:49 PM (#2768720)
Schneider does have a .394 OBP. He hasn't been all bad.
   41. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: May 04, 2008 at 05:56 PM (#2768723)
Well pitched games are so much more enjoyable than slugfests for me. Pelfrey is pain.
   42. Chris Dial Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:03 PM (#2768730)
Just pitch to the #8 guy.
   43. Dan Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:03 PM (#2768732)
Seriously, walking Chris Burke to face Hudson?
   44. Chris Dial Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:04 PM (#2768734)
Although, getting Haren out of the game with him only throwing about 80 pitches is a good move.

I wouldn't pinch hit for Haren here (well, maybe, but not likely). You have to get a hit, and Hudson only has about a 25% chance of scoring the run, while Haren has about an 18% chance of reaching base.

Personally, I don't think this change in pct is enough to warrant taking out a dominating pitcher.
   45. JJ1986 Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:04 PM (#2768735)
Chris Burke is really bad, but Haren could have gone 2 more innings. I think it makes some sense to get him out of there.
   46. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:07 PM (#2768736)
This is really bad.
   47. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:07 PM (#2768737)
This is not going well.
   48. Chris Dial Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:07 PM (#2768738)
Hudson can't run, so he probably wasnt' going to be an effective hitter, but Santana didn't make him swing.

Santana is really killing hte NL...such a weak league.
   49. Chris Dial Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:08 PM (#2768739)
Young isn't guessing right so far. And I like the high gas here.
   50. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:08 PM (#2768740)
Alright, no damage.
   51. Chris Dial Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:09 PM (#2768741)
Church is a good fielder.
   52. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:12 PM (#2768742)
I know he only allowed one run but this was something of a disappointing outing. 10 baserunner, 4 walks, and only lasting 6 innings. Not a bad outing but I was expecting more.
   53. JJ1986 Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:14 PM (#2768743)
I think Mark Grace is drunk. He's railing at Mr. Met's giant head and quality starts.
   54. manchestermets Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:14 PM (#2768744)
Church is a good fielder.

He is. The Mets are a team of extremes in defence - they seem to veer from spectacularly good to spectacularly bad. And when they're good, they're great to watch.
   55. Chris Dial Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:14 PM (#2768745)
6 IP 1 run. And he disappointed you.

You've got some standards. Sam would consider skipping his next start...
   56. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:15 PM (#2768746)
Did Grace just say OPS+ as they went to commercial?
   57. JJ1986 Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:16 PM (#2768748)
Did Grace just say OPS+ as they went to commercial?

Yes
   58. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:17 PM (#2768749)
What was it in reference to?
   59. dahlian Kirby, children's author extraordinaire. Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:17 PM (#2768750)
Did Grace just say OPS+ as they went to commercial?

There was a game where Grace reading out a list of apologies to players and fans for "jinxing" the bullpen.

One of the final apologies he got in was "sorry Shoewizard".
   60. JJ1986 Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:18 PM (#2768751)
He was listing stats that he considered to be worthless.

A We Will Rock You/Hey Ya mash up?
   62. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:19 PM (#2768753)

Ah, makes sense now.
   63. dahlian Kirby, children's author extraordinaire. Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:21 PM (#2768757)
He was listing stats that he considered to be worthless.

That's a bit presumptuous. He was also starting to segue into stats that aren't meaningless.

Joe Garagiola Sr. has already gone on record in Arizona about all the great work that's being done with stats - specifically, BABIP numbers. The announcers have some amount of stat savvy.
   64. dahlian Kirby, children's author extraordinaire. Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:22 PM (#2768758)
And that's on a broadcast, too.
   65. JJ1986 Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:24 PM (#2768761)
That's a bit presumptuous. He was also starting to segue into stats that aren't meaningless.

I didn't mean it like that; I honestly thought's thats what he meant. I could be wrong, either way, he appeared to be having a conversation with himself and only letting out some of the words.
   66. JJ1986 Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:25 PM (#2768762)
Grace actually did make a good point about quality starts, that 4 ER and 8 or 9 IP was better, and wasn't just complaining because they were too new a stat.
   67. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:28 PM (#2768765)
####.
   68. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: May 04, 2008 at 06:41 PM (#2768777)

Even though the Mets won the series, I have to say the D-Backs impressed me. They are tough matchup for Santana because of their right-handed heavy line-up but that also makes them vulnerable to righties.
