A poll: So how will the Mets stay at one game under .500?

A. Lose tonight, win tomorrow.
B. Win tonight, lose tomorrow.
   2. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 02, 2008 at 11:33 AM (#2840289)
Also, from the Rubin blog:

• Luis Castillo is back out of the lineup, and Jerry Manuel couldn't say for how long. "He seems to wear down a lot easier than I anticipated," Manuel said in a stinging comment.

Maybe we should root for Manuel to become full-time manager just so Castillo isn't back next year.
   3. Bob Koo Posted: July 02, 2008 at 12:09 PM (#2840316)
I'll choose B, Matt.
   4. Conor Posted: July 02, 2008 at 12:47 PM (#2840350)
So I guess they pushed back Pelfrey because of his better success on longer rest? I would have figured that at this point in their careers, they would rather give Pedro the extra day.

If my quick glance is correct, the last time the Mets were more than 3 games over or under 500 was April 19.

Check out Texas though; they have been 22-22, 25-25, 26-26, 27-27, 28-28, 29-29, 30-30, 31-31, 33-33, 34-34, 35-35, 36-36, 37-37, 38-38, 39-39, 40-40, and 41-41.
   5. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 02, 2008 at 02:44 PM (#2840463)
I think the Mets are trying to get Pedro going on a regular routine.

BTW, the Mets are catching a break. Hamels is being moved up a day because of Myers getting demoted which means they won't face him in Philly.
   6. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: July 02, 2008 at 04:05 PM (#2840536)
And tonight, we have another stop on the Pedro Martinez Farewell Tour. What will be this week's excuse if he pitches poorly? They swung the bats too hard? The cold didn't allow him to get a grip on his change? Pujols's bat is rally metal sheathed in wood?
   7. Bob Koo Posted: July 02, 2008 at 04:23 PM (#2840556)
Luis Castillo is dead last in RZR among 2B, and it's not even close. He's at .727, while the next qualified 2B is Hudson at .775.
   8. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: July 02, 2008 at 04:43 PM (#2840579)
If Orlando Hudson is next to last in defense then I can't trust the metric.

But yeah, Castillo sucks balls.
   9. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: July 02, 2008 at 05:22 PM (#2840608)
I hope they sign Mark Ellis in the offseason.
   10. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: July 02, 2008 at 05:29 PM (#2840616)
I guess they could turn Castillo into an absurdly overpaid utility infielder.
   11. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 02, 2008 at 05:46 PM (#2840637)
Castillo would be a pretty easy guy to trade. He has a reasonable contact and he still gets on base (his OBP is 15 points higher than Ellis's even this year).
   12. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: July 02, 2008 at 05:51 PM (#2840644)
Ellis plays in a tough park, though, in the AL.

There is a team out there stupid enough to trade for an unreliable, declining, no power, no glove second baseman on a three year contract?

Unfortunately, Minaya is still working for the Mets.
   13. Lassus Posted: July 02, 2008 at 05:55 PM (#2840647)
Metsdemeanors, do you actually like the Mets?

I have Pedro on my fantasy team and I think I might start him tonight based on my amazingly accurate "Law of Averages" rule.
   14. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: July 02, 2008 at 06:07 PM (#2840655)
When I was a kid, I loved Darryl Boston and David Cone. Favorite recent players include Cliff Floyd, John Olerud and Rick Reed.

Unfortunately, the Law of Averages only applies to the average major leaguer.
   15. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 02, 2008 at 06:34 PM (#2840676)
I am actually feeling more confident about this team right now than I have about them in weeks. I think the bullpen is going to be really strong the rest of the way and the offense has been more than respectable (5th in the NL in runs/game) and should better with Church healthy. Johan and Maine are a fine 1-2 punch. If Ollie, Pelfrey, and Pedro can be OK, the Mets should be a tough team the rest of the way.

I have to say, and I am guilty of this as much as anyone, there's been a lot of whining so far this season for a team that is only three games back in the loss column.
   16. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: July 02, 2008 at 06:56 PM (#2840685)
SS Jose Reyes
LF Endy Chavez
3B David Wright
CF Carlos Beltran
RF Ryan Church
1B Carlos Delgado
2B Damion Easley
C Brian Schneider
RP Pedro

At least Church is hitting fifth.
   17. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 07:21 PM (#2840702)
I have Pedro in all of my leagues and I can't justify starting him, so of course that means he's going to kick ass tonite ....(:
   18. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 02, 2008 at 07:30 PM (#2840712)
It always seems to thunderstorm here in Canada when Pedro starts, which means my wireless connection is garbage.
   19. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 02, 2008 at 07:39 PM (#2840726)
Russlan, you're Canadian?
   20. Lassus Posted: July 02, 2008 at 07:41 PM (#2840732)
It looks like I'm going to be following/listening to this game from work. And I started at 7:30 this morning. Ack.
   21. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:15 PM (#2840791)
I think we lost the announcing team (fsmw)
   22. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:17 PM (#2840794)
Yeah, I don't have the announcers either. Awesome!

Pineiro has been serviceable if not outstanding this year, just don't get blown out Joel.
   23. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2840798)
Reyes tempts Ankiel, but he was running back on that ball and had no chance.
   24. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:20 PM (#2840802)
Yeah, Matt. I am Canadian. I live in Windsor, which is 5 minutes from Detroit.
   25. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:20 PM (#2840804)
funny thing in another thread (the one about Buck) Voros said he wishes that he could watch a game with the ambient sound and no announcers (as an option) me personally I would like to be able to control the announcers volume.
   26. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:21 PM (#2840805)
Oh cool. Didn't know that.
   27. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:21 PM (#2840808)
Nice work to get Beltran.
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2840809)
Here is hoping they don't have the microphones fixed when they come back.

is it just selective memory or have we had more technical snafus this season than any other?
   29. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2840810)
Watching the game with no announcers is pretty nice, I wish they would turn the ambient sound up so we could hear inside the stadium.
   30. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2840813)
Technical snafus seem up, but I'm watching more games this year than last year, so it could be a perception thing.
   31. Lassus Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2840814)
...me personally I would like to be able to control the announcers volume.

Ummmmmmm..... doesn't your TV have this option? ;-)
   32. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2840815)
Watching the game with no announcers is pretty nice, I wish they would turn the ambient sound up so we could hear inside the stadium.

it could be that we are just that quiet. Looks like the mikes are still not working..
   33. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2840816)
Ankiel is coming out of his slump nicely, but I'm a little worried about him vs. Pedro's change. That could be ugly.
   34. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:25 PM (#2840818)
I have the Cards feed on EI and I'm hearing them just fine.
   35. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:25 PM (#2840819)
Ummmmmmm..... doesn't your TV have this option? ;-)

not exactly, I meant in comparison to the ambient sound, I want to hear more of the background noise so that I feel I'm more part of the game, at the same time there are occasions where I don't mind hearing a conversation (you know like those 15 minutes a game that they are talking baseball)
   36. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2840823)
I have the Cards feed on EI and I'm hearing them just fine.

maybe it's just charter then, it may take them longer to realize that the mikes aren't working (not many will complain hopefully)
   37. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2840824)
Nice AB Skip, and a shiny hit at the end!
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2840825)
Pedros win pct is just sick. 211-95....
   39. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:27 PM (#2840826)
I have the Cards feed on EI and I'm hearing them just fine.

My condolences.
   40. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:29 PM (#2840830)
Another two-strike hit.
   41. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:29 PM (#2840831)
This is going to plan so far. Albert-time.
   42. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:30 PM (#2840832)
my am reception sucks in my room, so I can't do what my dad used to do, which is watch the game with the radio on. (I even got an amplified antenna, but had problems with KMOX and really have problems with 550)

Miles (the highest all time batting average guy in interleague play history) just got another hit, I think he thinks the Mets are in the AL.
   43. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:30 PM (#2840835)
That's the thing that's bothered me so far. Pedro can't put people away right now and that's never been a problem for him.
   44. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:31 PM (#2840836)
dang off the end of the bat.
   45. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:31 PM (#2840837)
Damn, off the end of the bat.
   46. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:31 PM (#2840838)
Got Pujols, phew.
   47. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:31 PM (#2840839)
I'll send you a Coke, cfb.
   48. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:32 PM (#2840840)
That's the thing that's bothered me so far. Pedro can't put people away right now and that's never been a problem for him.

as a Cardinal fan, I hope he doesn't remember how tonite either. As a baseball fan, a Pedro fan(although I don't love him as much as many on this here website) and a fan of him in my three fantasy league teams, I hope he figures it out soon.
   49. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:32 PM (#2840842)
Who cares about Pujols' 300th homer?
   50. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:32 PM (#2840843)
I'm worried about Petey.
   51. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:32 PM (#2840844)
Nice work, everyone, Rick and Skip both.
   52. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:33 PM (#2840845)
Beltran playing baseball in the North Pole.
   53. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:33 PM (#2840847)
Is it going to be one of those nights again?
   54. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:34 PM (#2840849)
I'll send you a Coke, cfb.

I'll take a Mountain Dew. (I'm going to use italics from now on for in thread quotes, following your lead)

there is one run, I'm sure al and dan are talking about how important it is to get to Pedro early, because if you don't you won't get to him late.
   55. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:34 PM (#2840850)
Ankiel may not be the best hitter, but he does have legit power. Beltran probably shouldn't be playing that far back, but I can see the logic.
   56. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:35 PM (#2840851)
16 Ks for Glaus against Pedro?!? I guess those ABs were all against Super-Pedro, though.
   57. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:35 PM (#2840854)
don't think that was a strike, but oh well, you have to swing sometimes.
   58. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:36 PM (#2840856)
So, this ump is giving the big outside corner too.

Glaus!!
   59. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:36 PM (#2840857)
that was definately not a k, and yes by the sound of the fireworks, the ambient sound is definately muted.
   60. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:36 PM (#2840858)
Beltran always plays deep.

He should've been deeper there.
   61. Bob Koo Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:36 PM (#2840859)
Dammit, Pedro would have been better off if the 3-1 pitch was rightfully called a ball.
   62. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:36 PM (#2840860)
ENOUGH!
   63. Lassus Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:36 PM (#2840861)
The more I pop in to the action on Yahoo, the happier I am I'm not watching this game live.

Does he look as bad as he, um, looks in the play-by-play?
   64. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:37 PM (#2840862)
I honestly didn't think he got enough of that ball for it to go over the fence,(especially center) but it kept carrying.
   65. Chris Dial Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:37 PM (#2840865)
I've officially seen enough of Pedro. Make him a middle reliever or a closer. If he ahs to pace himself, I don't want it.
   66. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:37 PM (#2840866)
I can hear the game noises well, but the stadium sounds are dulled - I can barely hear the PA.

Which stadium is it that has the PA up really loud? Dodgers, right? And the Giants have the only female PA announcer.
   67. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:37 PM (#2840867)
Does he look as bad as he, um, looks in the play-by-play?

no real movement on anything he's thrown so far.
   68. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:38 PM (#2840868)
Wow.

Is this the end?
   69. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:38 PM (#2840869)
of course after I say that he finally gets a ball to bend a little.
   70. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:38 PM (#2840871)
Pedro is not throwing anything particularly scary, and it's either over the plate or way outside.
   71. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:39 PM (#2840874)
damn, hotties in the stadium. didn't think we had that type of eye candy in St Louis :(
   72. Chris Dial Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:39 PM (#2840875)
I'll say this - these Cards announcers are douches. They were ######## like crazy about that second strike to Glaus. And started badmouthing the ump saying he called it and has a short fuse because he's a vacation ump (and they don't know that he is one - just that they never heard of him). Sounds like some St. Louis #######.
   73. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:40 PM (#2840880)
How do you really feel, Dial?
   74. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:41 PM (#2840882)
well to be fair, the umpiring of late against the Cardinals has been pretty crappy.

of course that doesn't change their doucheness. (of course I can't hear a thing they are saying)
   75. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2840886)
The Cards announcers suck, no debate. This is a great game on the sole basis of missing them.
   76. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2840889)
one full inning, no announcers, 8 more to go.
   77. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2840890)
But that 2d strike to Glaus was way outside. So they may have a point.
   78. Chris Dial Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2840892)
well to be fair, the umpiring of late against the Cardinals has been pretty crappy.
Sure, it is against the Cards.
   79. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2840893)
of course that leaves me and guts plenty of time to fill in the blanks :)
   80. In what respect, Craig K? Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2840895)
List of phrases I thought I'd never say, number #464312:

Wow. Pedro Martinez really sucks.
   81. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2840896)
Did Ryan break the wrong way on that? I guess the broken bat screwed him up.
   82. Chris Dial Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2840897)
But that 2d strike to Glaus was way outside. So they may have a point.
They don't have a point with dissing the umpire because of one strike call. It was rude and jerkoff-y.
   83. Chris Dial Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2840898)
Did Ryan break the wrong way on that? I guess the broken bat screwed him up.
That's what the announcers said anyway.
   84. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2840899)
Sure, it is against the Cards.

usually it evens out, and there are definately bad calls against the other team, but for about the past 8 games or so, the umps have extended the strike zone (more than normal) on 3-1 pitches, and it has affected our team more because we are the team getting the 3-1 counts. If we were playing the Red Sox, A's or whoever else is a comparable patient team it wouldn't be so bad, but the umps of late, have seemed to insist on forcing a swing from the batter.
   85. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2840901)
Ryan's mistake erased.
   86. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:46 PM (#2840903)
badmouth fox net all you want, but the super slow mo replay kicks ass.
   87. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:46 PM (#2840906)
a comparable patient team

Cubbies are the most patient this year, I believe.
   88. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:47 PM (#2840909)
Cubbies are the most patient this year, I believe.

I almost listed the Cubs (I know we were tied with them in walks) but I don't remember if their walk total was more from being patient or just being good. (yes to me there is a difference)
   89. Chris Dial Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:48 PM (#2840910)
Delgado - you don't have to swing if it isn't a strike you can handle. HTH.
   90. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:48 PM (#2840911)
Damn, they're back.
   91. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:48 PM (#2840912)
damn, they fixed it.
   92. Chris Dial Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:48 PM (#2840913)
Just good #### up DP from Delgado.
   93. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:49 PM (#2840917)
Pedro is due for a homerun
   94. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:49 PM (#2840918)
ok, I'm not already annoyed by the announcers.
   95. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:50 PM (#2840919)
Three hits. No runs. I love it when that happens.

Thanks for that intelligent piece of give-up hitting, Carlos II.
   96. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:50 PM (#2840920)
not = now
   97. Guts Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:50 PM (#2840921)
Cubs lead the ML with 343 BBs. Cards are #2 with 338. 4 of the top 5 are NL teams (Boston).
   98. Chris Dial Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:50 PM (#2840922)
I really liked Piniero when he came up with teh Mariners. He retired the first 50 RHBs to start his career (or thereabouts).
   99. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:50 PM (#2840925)
I didn't get to watch but two pitches of the first inning. Can't say I am sad about that. The Mets have to consider moving Pedro from the rotation.
   100. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2008 at 08:52 PM (#2840929)
I didn't think anything would make me long for the days of a steroid debate, but this maple bat #### has to ####### end now.
