Man, I remember that. The Cards minor leaguers POUNDED Pelfrey. It wasn't the regulars.
   102. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:02 PM (#2842692)
NICE, Pelfrey!
   103. Guts Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:03 PM (#2842693)
For example, Albert never swings at ######## like that normally, but he's pressing to get 300, and thus sucking worse than usual.
   104. Mets Fan Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:04 PM (#2842694)
I guarantee you that Beltran is playing baseball after Ankiel has "retired."
   105. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:04 PM (#2842695)
Hamels dealing in Atlanta. 2 hits thru 7.
   106. Guts Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:04 PM (#2842698)
Sign Albert is Pressing - Ankiel is taking better ABs.
   107. Guts Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:05 PM (#2842701)
Cubbies still down. 6 more outs, Giants!
   108. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:05 PM (#2842702)
All of a sudden, this inning is taking forever.

Whew.

Pujols is pressing but Pelfrey has the ability to make righties look bad.
   110. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:07 PM (#2842705)
OK, Pelfrey.

You know, we need a nickname for him.

Ummm...

I juts got here---according to Gameday, am I seeing that the Mets got 3 runs without getting a base hit beyond the infield?
   116. Guts Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2842717)
Much better inning from Boggs.
   117. Guts Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2842720)
Yes. It was ugly. They did have a SF.
   118. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2842730)
Bugs, Taz, and Daffy. Can they take over for Easley, Tatis, and Marlon?
   119. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:13 PM (#2842732)
I'd say ONE of those trivia answers has to be Ted Williams.
   120. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:14 PM (#2842736)
Reese Havens with HR #2. Flores was substituted for in Kingsport - I hope he's not injured.
   121. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:14 PM (#2842737)
Tatis is Tweety. Taz is Castro.
   122. Mets Fan Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:14 PM (#2842738)
Looper and Pelfrey both went to Witchita State, huh? Interesting, because they're the same pitcher.

The gun had Pelfrey at 99 MPH. It is juiced.

WHAT WAS THAT??!?!?!

Hit and run with MOLINA!?!??! Insanity!
   125. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:17 PM (#2842745)
Nailed him. If Yadier Molina steals on you, Ramon Castro needs to quit baseball.
   126. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:17 PM (#2842746)
Nice play, Jose.

Of course he's injured. He's a Mets prospect. I predict that his spine exploded.

Pelfrey is really starting to put it together.
   130. Guts Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2842757)
Molina and the pitcher!! AHHHHHHH!!!!

Giants added on, at least.
   131. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2842758)
I think the Braves are done. They are really far behind and with all the interdivision games, they'll always be losing ground on someone.
   132. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2842760)
Shut up about the bats!
   133. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2842761)
Maybe they decided to promote Flores in the middle of the game. It would be awesome to have a 16 yo debut in Philly.
   134. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2842763)
I heart Ryan Church.
   135. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:22 PM (#2842765)
Church has probably been the Mets' best player this season when he has played.
   136. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:22 PM (#2842766)
Cheap shot by the announcers.
   137. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2842767)
OK, I take my words back for the Milledge trade. I have renounced my position!
   138. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:24 PM (#2842770)
I also heart this pitcher Boggs.
   139. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2842774)
If Delgado actually learns to keep laying off pitches, he's going to really help us. I think he steadily improves as the year goes on.

I know, I know, it's optimistic.
   140. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2842777)
Church was always going to be the better player in 2008. I said that when the trade went down. I expected Milledge to be better long-term although his struggles this season have made be a little more doubtful about that.
   141. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:26 PM (#2842778)
Way too optimistic.
   142. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:26 PM (#2842780)
Man. Death by papercuts.
   143. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:26 PM (#2842781)
Man, the Mets infected the Cards with dumb baseball disease.
   144. Guts Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:27 PM (#2842782)
Wow, bad play by Glaus. This is a really sloppy game for the Cards.
   145. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2842786)
Sucked JUST enough for that EIGHTH RBI.

Christ.
   146. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2842785)
Marlon Anderson is worse than Julio Franco last year. At least with Franco there was the sentiment.
   147. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:29 PM (#2842787)
Delgado does have a .330/.500 battling line since April 27th.
   148. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2842788)
Marlon Anderson is quickly rising on my list of LEAST FAVORITE PLAYERS. EVER.
   149. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2842789)
OK, Pelfrey. RBI time. You can do it.
   150. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2842790)
I knew that Church was underrated, but I am shocked to see how fundamentally solid Church is. He has a good batting eye. His stance is solid and he almost always has a balanced swing. He has good plate coverage. And defensively, he is not far off of Beltran.

This kid Boggs is great. Keep it up.
   151. Guts Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2842792)
Boggs has not looked great in any of his starts, but he looks really bad here. Good thing they won last night.
   152. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:31 PM (#2842793)
PELFREY!!
   153. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:31 PM (#2842794)
How is Anderson ahead of Castro in the order?

Wow Pelfrey.
   154. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:31 PM (#2842795)
Pelfrey!
   155. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:31 PM (#2842797)
RBI for Pelfrey!

PELFREY!
   157. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:31 PM (#2842800)
Anderson finds new ways to suck every minute that passes.
   158. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2842804)
One thing about Church which I didn't know until I looked; Church was 8th in the NL in LD% last year.

Reyes!
   159. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2842805)
REYES!!!! REYESS!!! Triples galore!
   160. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2842806)
Triple!

Ankiel isn't good out there.
   161. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2842807)
Pelfrey, clearly a better hitter than Anderson.
   162. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2842809)
Man, if the Mets had just won last night.

Beltran catches that, BTW.
   163. Guts Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2842810)
Ankiel is no Edmonds, that's for sure.
   164. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2842813)
I don't mean to be negative, and this has even nothing to do with tonight's outing, but I don't really get what all you guys (not the Cards fans, the Mets fans) are fawning over Boggs. He's pretty average.
   165. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2842815)
Ties Mookie!
   166. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:34 PM (#2842816)
Endy!

ENDY! WOOT!
   168. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:34 PM (#2842818)
ENDY! Finally!

Keep this kid Boggs in.
   169. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:34 PM (#2842820)
Geez, everybody hits.

Boggs had some bad luck early but the last two guys have creamed him.
   170. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:35 PM (#2842821)
Wow, this is a massacre.
   171. maharishi mahesh yogi berra (phredbird) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:35 PM (#2842822)
oh, this bites.
   172. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2842824)
If Endy is hitting balls off of the top of the wall against you, it may be time for you to leave the game.
   173. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2842825)
Wanna bet Pelfrey walks the leadoff man next inning?

If, and this is a huge if, Alou ever comes back (I love how his return always gets pushed back; it's uncanny) we will score some runs. I am worried about the pitching though.
   174. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2842827)
Pelfrey needs to find a way to go 7 this game.
   175. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:37 PM (#2842828)
Reyes may not be as great as Hanley, but he is the second best SS in the league by a healthy margin.
   176. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:37 PM (#2842830)
By the way, Hamels is a stud. He went 8 and 2 thirds tonight. He's gone fewer than 7 innings only 3 times this year. We are very lucky to miss him.
   177. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2842834)
Pelfrey is working on an extra day of rest, with this big lead hopefully he will just pour strikes in, as much as he can. He has to go 7 tonight.
   178. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2842835)
Come on, Colorado! :-)
   179. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:40 PM (#2842837)
Alou and Slappy can never be in the lineup healthy together. It is one of the fundamental laws of thermodynamics.

I'm not worried about the starting pitching, but I do wish we could get better defense in the right side of the infield.
   180. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:41 PM (#2842839)
Pelfrey gives up so many hits. His career BABIP is like 330.
   181. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:41 PM (#2842840)
The Mets are scoring runs even without Alou. As long as Church is healthy, they'll score. A quartet of Beltran, Reyes, Wright, and Church will score as long as the rest are close to average.
   182. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:41 PM (#2842842)
DP! Pelfrey has awesome Webb-like GB ability. He just needs a strikeout pitch.
   183. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:42 PM (#2842847)
I'm not worried about the starting pitching,

You should be. Pedro has had 1 good start this season. Perez is Perez, and Pelfrey is still finding his way.
   184. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:43 PM (#2842849)
I'm worried about every part of this team. They suck. No getting around that.
   185. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:43 PM (#2842851)
Why do you always have to be pessimistic, Russlan?
   186. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:44 PM (#2842853)
Hamels was neck and neck with Kazmir back in the minors. The only questions were maturity and durability, but Hamels is blossoming into a legit ace.
   187. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:45 PM (#2842854)
Pelfrey either needs a K pitch or better control. (Both would be nice, of course.) But he needs one of those 2 to truly be a solid pitcher.

He has thrown 40 pitches through 3, hopefully he can do 7. Or more.
   188. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:46 PM (#2842856)
I'm worried about every part of this team. They suck.

No, they don't.
   189. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:47 PM (#2842861)
Gary, Keith, and Ron really love Pelfrey. He has pitched better so far but the way they talk about him you would think at the least he would have an ERA+ over 100.
   190. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:47 PM (#2842862)

Isn't the second part of this sentence the real problem?
   192. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:47 PM (#2842867)
I think it's his complete turnaround that's most impressive, Conor. The overall numbers will come.
   193. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2842872)
Pelfrey has actually been striking out some hitters recently. Including tonight, he has 27 strikeouts in his last 40.2 IP. That's pretty good. He has a 3.10 ERA during that span and a fips of 3.27. He is not that good as but he can be quite good if he continues to allow so few homers.
   194. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2842875)
I just noticed something. Look at Albert. Between those first two pitches, he didn't step out of the box. And barely moved between the 2nd and 3rd pitches either. Geez, that's great.
   195. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:51 PM (#2842878)
Isn't the second part of this sentence the real problem?

If they are close to average, the Mets will be one of the best in the league. If they are close to average, it will still be solidly above average. They are 5th in the league in runs guys and that's with all the AB to Tatis, Nixon, etc.
   196. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:51 PM (#2842879)
I'm not worried about the rotation. I like what I see from Pedro (in terms of stuff), he'll come around. And Ollie was awesome in his last start. Pelfrey is putting it together.

Our defense is weaker that it has been in recent years, and I think it has impacted the pitching.
   197. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:53 PM (#2842883)
I agree, and he is definitely pitching better. But he is still exhibiting so major problems, chief among them his control and inability to get lefties out. Now don't get me wrong, at this point he has been a pretty close to league average pitcer, and considering where he has been the last few years that quite impressive. But his ERA+ is still 92 or whatever it is. And every game I feel like they are telling us he pitched better than his statline. I didn't think he pitched all that great against the Yankees on Friday (4 BB in 5 IP; sure he had some bloop hits drop in but when you walk that many guys in 5 innings you can't say you pitched all that great) and they are talking about how well he is throwing and how his line doesn't do it justice.

I don't know; maybe I am just being picky. It's kind of annoying when they are jocking Pelfrey so much and I think they just realized two weeks ago how great Reyes has been this year.

And Pelfrey has been great today, no doubt about that.
   198. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:53 PM (#2842882)
K! Pelfrey. With each start, I see an cornerstone of our franchise forming.
   199. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:53 PM (#2842884)
The league average ISO is 0.150. Pelfrey's is 0.110. Its the reason he can survive getting killed by lefties as he does.
   200. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:53 PM (#2842885)
This season has sucked so far but the performance of Pelfrey has been one of the few positives.
