It's a testament to how strong his sinker is that he has below average K and BB rates and he is still around a league average starting pitcher.

I think the performance of Pelfrey is the No. 1 positive out of this season, so far.
   203. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:57 PM (#2842896)
Pelfrey has a 96 ERA+ including tonight. He has allowed only 2 UER which means ERA+ probably underrates him.

Pelfrey is never going to be a Cy Young candidate. But if he can be a durable, middle of the rotation guy who eats innings, it'll mean a lot to this rotation.
   204. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:58 PM (#2842897)
Nolina's defense has been a joke this series.
   205. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:58 PM (#2842898)
It's very rare to find a pitcher who can throw comfortably in the mid-90s and have such a strong GB tendency. As BJ once said, if there is one pitch to have, it's the sinking fastball.

I can envision a day when Pelfrey can live up and down in the zone - ala Schilling Prime. It's that kind of potential that forces you to be patient.
   206. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 09:59 PM (#2842900)
Matt, I think you could possibly put the fact that Reyes has seemingly gotten back to the level of performance he was in 06 after the way last season ended could possibly be there as well. But Pelfrey is for sure up there.
   207. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:01 PM (#2842904)
Too bad we lost yesterday's game. I really thought we deserved that one. Would have liked to have taken 3 of 4, but a split isn't a disaster.
   208. AJM Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:02 PM (#2842905)

His RA+ is 100 (well, 99.5).
   209. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:03 PM (#2842906)
Well maybe not since his D has been so poor.
   210. AJM Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:03 PM (#2842907)
I just noticed that Pelfrey has only given up 4 homers.
   211. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:04 PM (#2842908)
Stop messing around, Pelf. Throw strikes.
   212. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:04 PM (#2842909)
The best advice I ever received?

"Hey, Keith, try some of this."
   213. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:06 PM (#2842910)
The next Ollie start will be a big one. Whatever Warthen did, Ollie was unhittable. If he can sustain some part of that, Ollie would be very solid.
   214. Jesus Don't Want Mets For A Sunbeam Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:06 PM (#2842911)
That's a Wangian HR rate.
   215. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:07 PM (#2842912)
DP! That's what makes Pelfrey special.
   216. AJM Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:08 PM (#2842914)
His RA+ is 100 (well, 99.5).

Nevermind, it's 96.
   217. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:08 PM (#2842915)
When he doesn't walk people he is so tough.
   218. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:08 PM (#2842916)
One thing I'm worried about is that Slappy is about to go Alou on us. I hope not.

Nice work, Pelf.
   219. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:09 PM (#2842917)
Manuel should pull the regulars now. Let's get some Argenis!
   220. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:10 PM (#2842918)
Wow - only 5 innings so far? Yikes.
   221. AJM Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:10 PM (#2842919)
One thing I'm worried about is that Slappy is about to go Alou on us. I hope not.

I don't know. If that happens they may actually think about replacing him in the offseason.
   222. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:11 PM (#2842920)
That doesn't include tonight, does it AJM?
   223. baseballing powerhouse (phredbird) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:12 PM (#2842923)
tony leaving boggs in? guess he wants him to get to the 9th and then put in miles.
   224. AJM Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:12 PM (#2842924)
It does. There is always the possibility I screwed something else up too.
   225. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:13 PM (#2842925)
Even the outs Church makes are hard. I'm convinced he can hit.

Can we take Church out now?
   226. AJM Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:13 PM (#2842926)
Pujols trying to pull a Reyes.
   227. AJM Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2842927)
Crushed!
   228. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2842928)
CARLOS DELGADO! We need you big guy for the next series.
   229. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:14 PM (#2842929)
ALL YOUR STADIUMS ARE BELONG TO CARLOS DELGADO
   230. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:15 PM (#2842931)
Delgado is a pure slugger.
   231. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:15 PM (#2842932)
We will need Delgado for the stretch drive. He's been an asset since May.
   232. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:16 PM (#2842933)
I wonder what the record is for most ER given up in a game?
   233. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:16 PM (#2842934)
Maybe we can dust off Marlon for usefulness.

Thank you, Boggs.
   234. AJM Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:18 PM (#2842938)
I wonder what the record is for most ER given up in a game?

Since 1956, 14.
   235. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:20 PM (#2842940)
Thanks, AJM. I made a cursory search, but gave up when some other shiny moving picture online caught my attention.
   236. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:21 PM (#2842941)
Endy Chavez is so good on defense.

Save the shutout, Pelf.
   237. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2842942)
DAMN that is one impressive pitching line by Oquist in that game.
   238. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#2842943)
It would be bush, but couldn't we play the infield in. It would feel cheap to give up a run just because we had to keep them back.
   239. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:24 PM (#2842944)
It would be bush. I'd trade the out for the run.
   240. baseballing powerhouse (phredbird) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:24 PM (#2842945)
praise jesus, cubs got clobbered.
   241. Lassus Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:24 PM (#2842946)
I'm noticing that ad behind home plate. Did Hardees buy Carl's Jr.? Hmmmm...
   242. baseballing powerhouse (phredbird) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:25 PM (#2842947)
ho ho, cards chip away at the lead.
   243. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:26 PM (#2842948)
Man that sinker is nasty.
   244. Raskolnikov Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:29 PM (#2842952)
I would teach Pelfrey the split-finger to use against lefties. What's Mike Scott doing nowadays.

K! Pelfrey gets a lefty!
   245. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:29 PM (#2842953)
95 pitches through 6, no reason he shouldn't start the 7th.
   246. AJM Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:31 PM (#2842954)
Pelfrey looking good.
   247. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:39 PM (#2842959)
Endy is incredible.
   248. Alan S Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:39 PM (#2842960)
Endy is awesome.
   249. AJM Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:39 PM (#2842961)
Endy is awesome!
   250. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:39 PM (#2842962)
I think that's close enough for Alan to buy me a coke.

We have an amazing defensive OF. The IF, not so much.
   251. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:40 PM (#2842963)
Endy makes everything look really easy. That was another fantastic play that he makes look easy.
   252. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:42 PM (#2842966)
I think an Endy, Beltran, Church OF is probably the best defensive OF in the game, right? Boston has a good one when they roll out Ellsbury, Drew, and Crisp. Any others? I think the Cubs had a good one last year.
   253. AJM Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:43 PM (#2842968)
Another hard hit ball. Luckily we're up 10, so he can finish this inning.
   254. Alan S Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:44 PM (#2842970)
Conor, I will transfer to you the coke that AJM owes to me.
   255. AJM Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:45 PM (#2842971)
6 Ks.
   256. Conor Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:45 PM (#2842972)
6 ks.

All the superlatives Gary and Keith want to heap on Mike today are well deserved.
   257. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:45 PM (#2842973)
Pelfrey!

Hell of an outing, kid.
   258. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 10:49 PM (#2842976)
I know it's 11-1, but Fernando Tatis is batting third. How funny is that?
   259. Jesus Don't Want Mets For A Sunbeam Posted: July 03, 2008 at 11:02 PM (#2842980)
Not as funny as Braden Looper 'hitting'.
   260. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 03, 2008 at 11:02 PM (#2842981)
Looper is pinch hitting? What the hell is going on there?
   261. Joshemy Posted: July 03, 2008 at 11:12 PM (#2842983)
The Pelf Man!

Also, 11 runs!
