Pedro Martinez received a shot of anti-inflammatory medication in New York today to address his groin issue and has been scratched from Sunday’s start. He’s scheduled to join the team in time to try a bullpen session Saturday. If that goes well, he may pitch Tuesday against the Phillies. Otherwise, the Mets can take advantage of Monday’s off-day and use four starters for another turn through the rotation. Mike Pelfrey starts Sunday against the Reds.
Who did the A's get?
If the Phils gave up several of their very few prospects (their system is worse than the Mets) for a pitcher currently sporting a 77 ERA+ on the season, I'll be content. I expected them to go seriously after Bedard or Burnett so Joe Blanton in a Phillies uni isn't the worst thing in the world.
Great trade for Philly! Who did they give up?
The Athletics get second baseman Adrian Cardenas, pitcher Josh Outman and outfielder Matthew Spencer, all minor leaguers.
HAHAHAHA! That's awesome.
I love Pedro as much as anyone but he's the Mets 5th starter right now and Vargas and Duque (who is pitching in Binghamton today) are more than reasonable replacements.
If the Mets did the same move, you'd be ticked. They traded one of the few minor leaguers with significant upside.
Blanton is better than a 77 ERA+. He does have a career 100 ERA+ and he is an upgrade but not as big an upgrade as I was fearing they'd get in the second half.
Two things. First, when I look at a Phillies' deal, I think about how it affects the pennant race this year, not how it affects the 2011 Phillies. It's just a different perspective. Blanton helps the 2008 Phillies, in an area of BIG weakness for them right now.
But second, as I clarified once I saw the price, that is not a good deal for the Phillies, and I'd be unhappy if I were a Phillies' fan.
That was some nasty stuff Cueto was throwing. Ouch.
Only in McAfee. In CBP, I expect an ERA over 5, especially considering his road splits.
He's helped enormously by the A's defense and park.
I disagree that Burnett gets lit up more often than Blanton. Blanton is the worse pitcher but more likely to stay healthy. That has value especially during a full season but not as much for a deadline deal.
So Easley is batting ahead of Delgado even vs RHP now?
So Easley is batting ahead of Delgado even vs RHP now?
Delgado has been hot in the six spot the last few weeks.
Delgado seeing the ball well.
I was at that game. I fell asleep and don't remember it, but my older brother will constantly remind me about it.
Don't hate. He does have a 1.93 ERA in his last two starts.
Also vaguely familiar...
I'm calling an oppo Grand Slam here.
You must have been suicidal during the collapse.
You don't know what you're talking about. I saw it coming in late August. I dealt with it alright. Lots of lithium and booze.
A lot of people were saying the same thing about Pelfrey just two months ago.
Really? Volquez, Cueto, Harang, Arroyo, and Bailey isn't a bad quintet, IMHO.
Also, Pelfrey didn't get jacked by C.C. Sabathia. I admit, that did alter my opinion slightly.
Actually their problem is quite different. Their hitting isn't that great and their best hitters are their worst defenders.
I wouldn't mind a staff of Harang/Volquez/Cueto/Bailey/Arroyo. Last year, the bullpen was their biggest problem, and thats partially fixed now.
Harang has a good contract, doesn't he? If not Arroyo, some generic fifth starter. But my point still remains. Its not the pitching they have to fix, its their hitting and defence. Bruce/Votto/Philips is a good start.
But they have a long way to go.
He is now leading the Mets in homers. Who would have predicted that when he was struggling?
Browning? Rijo?
