Ugh. The only time Marlon should play is when Pelfrey is on the mound and the Mets are facing a righty. Endy's defense is more important than the supposed offensive upgrade Marlon provides.

Carlos Delgado has a higher OPS+ than Ryan Howard.

The Mets might have to consider picking up Delgado's option. I don't want Teixeira for six years/120M.

Blanton will make his first Phillies start on Tuesday night at Shea. Myers was supposed to make his return then, so I'm guessing he's pushed back to Wednesday.

The Mets might have to consider picking up Delgado's option. I don't want Teixeira for six years/120M.

Delgado probably would be a solid option for 2009 if he is platooned, depending on how he finishes the year. That said, who plays first in 2010 and beyond? Mike Carp has really been struggling in AA recently (.374 slugging percentage since April, no XBH in July). Ike Davis is looking like a bust as he's been putrid in A-ball.

Delgado's defense has been a bigger problem this year than the last two when he was around average. I still think Teixeira is the right move.

Oh no, Jeff Brantley. I think I'll mute this.

Nothing like jumping to a quick conclusion, eh? At least Havens and Holt have been showing good stuff . . . .
   9. Sam M. Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:09 PM (#2864160)
Holt, by the way, is # 9 on this week's BA Prospect Hot Sheet. This is what they had to say:

A supplemental first-round pick out of UNC Wilmington, Holt delivered his best professional outing yet by pitching seven shutout innings and striking out 10 in a game against State College. Holt struck out the game's first four batters and retired the leadoff batter in each of the first six innings. His first start did not go well, but since then Holt has allowed three earned runs in 20 2/3 innings, as hitters are struggling to catch up to his 94 mph fastball.

Not bad, eh?

Not only ugh Marlon, but batting him second?

Nothing like jumping to a quick conclusion, eh? At least Havens and Holt have been showing good stuff . . . .

Davis is supposed to do well in Low-A as a college hitter. But he has only walked once, hasn't hit a homer in 84 AB, and has a .589 OPS. That's not good.
   12. Crimes and Metsdemeanors Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:17 PM (#2864164)
A two strike hit!
   13. Raskolnikov Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:17 PM (#2864165)
Holt is too far away to get too excited.

Davis has been very disappointing. I would be more excited with Havens if I weren't worried so much about that elbow.

I pick up Delgado's option and see how Evans and Carp do next year. Which 1B options will be available in 2010?
   14. Sam M. Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:17 PM (#2864166)
But he has only walked once, hasn't hit a homer in 84 AB, and has a .589 OPS. That's not good.

No, it's not good. But it's also only 84 ABs, and he could just be pressing. All I'm saying is it's WAY too soon to draw any conclusions.
   15. Sam M. Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:18 PM (#2864167)
Catch the damn ball, Schneider. Geez.

That obviously doesn't include corner outfielders that could play first as well.
   19. Raskolnikov Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:21 PM (#2864172)
Hmm, not much. Maybe Bowden looks to dump Nick Johnson this winter?

Watching Maine pitch can be painful at times.
   20. Sam M. Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:22 PM (#2864173)
Siddown, Junior. Blew him away. Nice.
   21. Raskolnikov Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:23 PM (#2864174)
Milwaukee has a bunch of 1B bashers that will crowd each other soon, and will need a starting pitcher after this year. Maybe we can offer Maine as bait for one of their hitters.

That's a really nice job by Maine.
   24. Sam M. Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:24 PM (#2864180)
That actually ended up being a nice inning for Maine. Just a hit and a PB, really.

We're not exactly going to have a surplus after Perez leaves, and Pedro retires.

One of which is playing in this game.

I would absolutely take Nick Johnson on a gamble. He's in no position to demand a starting position and he should come at little cost.
   30. Raskolnikov Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:27 PM (#2864187)
Sam, the Mets have to resign Ollie. I would love for us to go after CC, but there have been no whispers that Omar is going to go heavy on the pitching this winter.
   31. Sam M. Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:28 PM (#2864188)
I would absolutely take Nick Johnson on a gamble.

Good lord. Have you learned NOTHING from penciling in Moises Alou for a starting position? If you sign Nick Johnson and expect him to play 1B for you, and then he's out for the season on April 22nd, what is your Plan B????
   32. Raskolnikov Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2864189)
Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, Delgado has won the starting job for 2009 so far. We can worry about that hole next year.
   33. Sam M. Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:30 PM (#2864191)
Sam, the Mets have to resign Ollie.

That's the thing about free agency. What the team "has to" do may not dovetail with what the player decides to do, leaving your favorite team screwed big-time . . . . Ollie Perez may just decide he'd rather play in California. Or in the Bronx. Or who the heck knows where, or for whom. The Mets can't assume he'll come back, regardless of the team's needs. All we know, because of who is agent is, is that he WILL explore the market. Which means he MIGHT leave.
   34. Raskolnikov Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:31 PM (#2864192)
Nick Johnson isn't going to be a starting 1Bman next year. He'll probably need to prove that he's recovered in a part-time role.
   35. Raskolnikov Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:34 PM (#2864193)
baseball chick states that Berkman will be available at the right price. I assume that remains the case for the winter as well.
   36. Raskolnikov Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:38 PM (#2864195)
Maine looks good.

Fernando leads off with a triple. Evans is going to need to prove he can hit enough to stick as a 1Bman.
   37. AJM Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:38 PM (#2864196)

   38. Raskolnikov Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:40 PM (#2864197)
If we offered Maine/Niese/Murphy to the Brew for Braun, do they laugh at us or do they think about it?

Truth be told, I am ambivalent about the Mets re-signing Perez. If he pitches well enough the rest of the way to be a Type-A free agent, you could sign someone else like a Derek Lowe, whose production you can be much more certain of, for less money and less year and gain one draft pick. Lowe doesn't have the upside of Perez but he doesn't have the downside. He'd be much cheaper and he's very reliable.
   40. Raskolnikov Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:41 PM (#2864200)
Damn. Actually, I don't mind Tatis getting thrown out.

I don't mind Tatis going for it there on Dunn.

Arroyo sucks. I don't like giving sucky pitchers free outs.

That would be fine, say, if Doc Halladay was pitching.
   45. Sam M. Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:45 PM (#2864208)
I don't think they laugh, but they do say no. Maine is a very valuable property, and Braun has SO little defensive value . . . so it's not a laughable proposition. But it is a no; HOF-caliber hitters don't come along every day.
   46. Karl from NY Posted: July 18, 2008 at 07:46 PM (#2864209)
Ed Coleman on radio said the same thing, take a chance for the double with no score. Of course, with none out, that's wrong.

He's actually an average defensive leftfielder. He is 24 years old and a .600 career slugging percentage. They laugh.

From what Harvey says (and I listen when he talks about the Brew), Weeks may be the odd man out this winter. Their SS prospect in AA will push Hardy to 2B. Weeks may be a interesting guy to target, and I know Russlan loves him.

Why did you do that, Maine?
   69. Sam M. Posted: July 18, 2008 at 08:10 PM (#2864258)
Is it just me, or does Maine seem to really be trying to pitch DOWN a lot more tonight than usual?

That was unlikely as ####.
   73. Raskolnikov Posted: July 18, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2864264)
DP! You know, Easley turns the DP pretty well.
   74. Sam M. Posted: July 18, 2008 at 08:13 PM (#2864266)
No, both of the walks won't score. Keeping the ball down helped there. So did a bonehead move of swinging at the first pitch after Maine pulled a Maine to the previous batter. Thanks, Edwin.

I wouldn't call that one pulling a Maine. That's called being scared of Dunn after seeing Bruce's pop fly homer. That was a pitch around.

   77. Sam M. Posted: July 18, 2008 at 08:18 PM (#2864273)
That was a pitch around.

Maybe, but if so it was a risky one. Encarnacion could easily have made it a 3-run mistake with one swing. If it was a strategy, Maine certainly made it pay off with one pitch.

THROW ####### STRIKES!!!

This is brutal to watch. 92 pitches in five innings.

I knew that would happen. Throw strikes, Maine. Geez.

Go #### yourself, David. Go #### yourself, Maine.
   92. Sam M. Posted: July 18, 2008 at 08:34 PM (#2864305)

All John Maine has to do is BLOW KEN GRIFFEY AWAY. He doesn't have to nibble at him or anything. Griffey can't get around on Maine's fastball anymore. There's no excuse for walking him, period.

Just get out of this inning with no more damage.

You have to argue that. Encarnacion made no effort whatsoever to move. Come on!
