You're welcome, Cubs' fans.

Are you Brian Onora?

It would be nice if they could home knowing that the Phillies can do no better than tie for the division lead after this weekend. Though, of course, if they do that, and then the Phillies sweep this weekend, I won't be very happy.

Nice start. Let's go Delgado.

Good start.

Another first inning run.

Grand Slams are acceptable.

Brian Schneider is on fire!

I don't know who this is or what he did to the real Schneider, but I like him.
   11. Lassus Posted: September 03, 2008 at 02:20 PM (#2927652)
Brian Schneider. Always padding his stats with those meaningless home runs.
   12. Alan S Posted: September 03, 2008 at 02:20 PM (#2927653)
They always point it out on TV when it happens, but it really must be a nice feeling for a pitcher to bat before he pitches.
   13. Alan S Posted: September 03, 2008 at 02:22 PM (#2927656)
Schneider has genuinely good stats for a catcher against RHPs this year. If Castro comes back, it's a very very good platoon we have.
   14. Lassus Posted: September 03, 2008 at 02:24 PM (#2927657)
The question really is, can we hold this lead?
   15. Alan S Posted: September 03, 2008 at 02:25 PM (#2927659)
Please don't revert to Evil Ollie today.

Jeez, that was an epic failure, no matter how many runs we are ahead.

Much better inning, Oliver.
   24. Alan S Posted: September 03, 2008 at 02:51 PM (#2927702)

   25. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 03, 2008 at 02:51 PM (#2927704)
Uh oh. The runs are going to stop and the Mets are going to blow this, aren't they?
   26. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: September 03, 2008 at 02:52 PM (#2927707)
Damn, that was a nice play.
   27. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: September 03, 2008 at 02:56 PM (#2927716)
Dave Bush is a complete mystery. His WHIP is among the best, or was until just recently, and yet he can have outings where you just stare with mouth agape.

Like today.

It's disappointing to have the team now get swept by the last two opponents of merit that being Chicago and New York. And not just swept but swept at HOME. The Cubs series was not competitive in the slightest and while one could contend that Milwaukee was in the first two games of this series it was more due to good fortune than actually playing at the same level as the opposition. The easiest contrast is that the Brewers offense is slots 2-6. Milwaukee enters each game down four guys offensively. On the mound the team quickly gets deflated when the starter sags because anyone with a clue knows the bullpen is a drag on the squad.

The hope was that on a ten game home stand Milwaukee could go 7-3 or 8-2. Now the team has to sweep both SD and Cincy to make the former possible. And with Peavy on the docket and the Reds always a tough go that is highly unlikely.

Sigh.......

   30. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:00 PM (#2927729)
Oliver Perez has always enjoyed a fair amount of success against Milwaukee. I wouldn't be that concerned......
   31. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:01 PM (#2927734)
Harveys, the Mets blew a seven run lead last week and Ollie is a ####### walk machine.

This isn't CLOSE to being over.
   32. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:03 PM (#2927739)
C/M:

This isn't standard fan negativity. I know this team.

Even should the offense make it close the bullpen will give it right back.

The Milwaukee formula for success in the second half is predicated on the starter going deep into the game. Six plus innings if not more.

As soon as Ben left after five I knew this entire series was in jeopardy and said as much.

Maine for Weeks.

   44. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:35 PM (#2927801)
Why is Delgado making that play? Someone should've called him off.

Yeah, Church should be making that play.

I ask this every time the Mets face the Brewers.

Maine for Weeks.

Discuss.

No, only because it blocks Murphy from getting a shot. I haven't been impressed with Weeks' defense.
   47. Raskolnikov Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:40 PM (#2927819)
We have to resign Ollie. Give him whatever he wants.
   48. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:41 PM (#2927820)
I wouldn't. Its not that Maine for Weeks wouldn't be fair, but I don't like depleting starting pitching depth.

And yeah, Weeks' defense can be pretty brutal at times.
   49. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:43 PM (#2927829)
Until they just mentioned him I completely forgot about Pagan. Is he alive?
   50. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:44 PM (#2927832)
Here are the facts around Rickie Weeks:

Despite continuous practice and effort Weeks defense is still bad. And worse, he makes errors at key junctures of the game. In particular an annoying habit of slinging the ball sidearm on double plays resulting in tailing throws wide of first.

He takes ball four. He gets hit by pitches. But he simply cannot make consistent contact. Weeks swings through more 88 mph fastballs than anyone on the face of the planet.

He has been cut down trying to take an extra base or picked off 8-10 times this season. This is not hyperbole. Yost wants the guys to be aggressive and Weeks takes that charge seriously. He hustles but it's "stupid hustle".

Weeks is 25, has played several hundred major league games and it still has not "clicked". He's a mediocre offensive player with plus speed who runs the bases poorly and plays poor defense. The only place where you might find a home for him and get results is centerfield. If his bat didn't completely die during the position switch.

I hope this was helpful.

Personally, I think that would be a galactically stupid trade by the Mets.
   51. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:45 PM (#2927835)
Pagan's probably dancing around a Maypole someplace.
   52. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:48 PM (#2927846)
Pagan is out for the season with shoulder surgery. Considering all play of Evans and Murphy, I would not be surprised if he never plays for the Mets again. He did a decent job for the Mets while he was in there. That said, it was a blessing in disguise that he got hurt as Tatis probably never gets a shot without Angel getting hurt.
   53. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:50 PM (#2927853)
Maybe I'd change my mind if I watched him play everyday but Weeks still intrigues me. The man oozes tools.
   54. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:52 PM (#2927859)
Russlan:

He's Shawon Dunston with more OBP and far less defense.
   55. Raskolnikov Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:53 PM (#2927864)
Yeah, Murphy and Evans have made Pagan not very useful.
   56. Lassus Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:54 PM (#2927867)
As an opposing faction, Corey Hart annoys the hell out of me.
   57. Raskolnikov Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:54 PM (#2927868)
Russlan, I'm with you. I like Weeks' upside, but not at the expense of Maine (and consequentially, Murphy).
   58. Bunny Vincennes Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:54 PM (#2927870)
That makes two of us, Lassus.

Jack:

Any Cubs fans still claiming that Fukudome is the better player?

Cripes, will Fukudome start in the playoffs? I figure DeRosa gets the nod.....
   60. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:58 PM (#2927877)
Billy has had a million chances in this series to get back some of his season with nonstop lefties on the mound and he has puked all over himself.

I love the guy but 2008 has been a disaster.....
   61. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:58 PM (#2927879)

   62. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:58 PM (#2927880)
Shut up, Cohen.
   63. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 03, 2008 at 03:58 PM (#2927881)
Call interference on Hall? Cohen, you are a #########.
   64. Bunny Vincennes Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:02 PM (#2927886)
I think Hart is way better than Fukudome.

In the playoffs, I think DeRosa is an interesting question, unless Fukudome gets hot. He plays excellent defense and Lou might like that. With DeRosa in LF that puts Cedeno at second, and I'm not sure if the Cubs gain much with that alignment. I could be persuaded but at first glance, I'd say leave it as it is.
   65. Raskolnikov Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:02 PM (#2927889)
Harvey, with the emergence of 2 potential HOFers in Fielder and Braun, isn't it a bit greedy to expect more? Especially with what's coming down the pipeline.
   66. Raskolnikov Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:05 PM (#2927893)
How can you not love Daniel Murphy?
   67. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:08 PM (#2927898)
Is David Wright going to pull a Jose Reyes this year? My gosh, he's hitting like bat turds.
   68. Lassus Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:10 PM (#2927901)
Shut up, Cohen.

I'm actually not watching the game. What now?
   69. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:13 PM (#2927909)
Hall missed a cookie from Perez and popped out. He was ticked because a homer would make this interesting and Hall slammed his bat. He got in Schneider's way and Cohen went on and on about it.
   70. Bob Koo Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:15 PM (#2927920)
Be good, Smith.
   71. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:17 PM (#2927923)
He also called it a selfish play by Hall.

   74. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:19 PM (#2927928)

   75. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:19 PM (#2927932)
I'd love to see the Mets sign Milton Bradley. I imagine Cohen would go something like the exploding heads in Scanners.
   76. Raskolnikov Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:21 PM (#2927934)
Smith has a great arm. He just can't last an entire season. Willie used him too much early on this year.
   77. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:22 PM (#2927936)
You don't even need to qualify that ####. Willie used him too much.
   78. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:24 PM (#2927940)
Manuel has been riding Smith pretty hard. Today is his 9th appearance in 12 games. I don't think fatigue has been his problem this year. It was last year though and I could be wrong about this year.
   79. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:34 PM (#2927957)
Evans!

What are you going to ask him for next?
   85. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:39 PM (#2927981)
Fielder won't last long enough to make the Hall. Have you SEEN him? Prince is heavier now than he was at the beginning of the season. Who lets that happen?

There are also whispers around the club that Fielder is fretting about his contract or lack thereof. I don't want to believe it, but Prince's hitting has been erratic and his defense has been DREADFUL. Seriously, seriously ugly. Getting back to his offense in Prince's career the constant element in EVERY season has been a ridiculous hot streak about a month long. Every year, like clockwork. That never happened this year. He started out well in August but then just went south about two weeks ago and now looks utterly lost at the plate.
   86. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:40 PM (#2927986)
What are you going to ask him for next?

I don't get this.

This is the strongest bench the Mets have had in Minaya's time. He can start Tatis and Evans against lefties and have Church and Murphy on the bench for critical situations. He can do the opposite when a righty is on the mound. The roster expansion allows Schneider to hit only against righties and a good righthanded hitter to hit a lefty reliever.

It's fun.
   87. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:41 PM (#2927988)
How about Cain-Fielder trade this offseason?
   88. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:42 PM (#2927990)
Yeah, I doubt the expanded rosters help any team as much as they help the Mets.
   89. Mark S. Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:42 PM (#2927998)

It's a blowout and there are guys from the other team in the chatter. Might as well talk about something.
   94. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:50 PM (#2928019)
Russlan:

That is not an outrageous suggestion. While publicly the Brewers are saying that Gamel is a third baseman most folks think he is almost certain for first base.

But it's too soon for that. Even after his upcoming raise Prince's price is reasonable and Gamel needs to prove himself at Triple A. He hit under .200 for two months the latter part of the season at Huntsville. With no power.

The two kids who COULD make the leap as soon as next season are Alcides Escobar and Angel Salome. The club will give Hall one final chance to get straighted out at third, move Hardy to second and put Escobar at short.

Alcides is an AMAZING defensive player. Think Tulo. Only better.

Honest...........
   95. Bob Koo Posted: September 03, 2008 at 04:52 PM (#2928023)
Who's gonna pitch the bottom of the 9th? Looks like Parnell or Schoeneweis. Would've liked to see Reyes.

Can we at least get a look at Parnell? We know all about Suckenweis.
