NL West Champion San Diego at NL Central Champion St. Louis 1:05pm ET on ESPN

J. Peavy (0-0, NA) vs. C. Carpenter (0-0, NA)

On paper it’s a mismatch, but the Padres won the season series 4-3.  For the Padres to have a shot at this thing, I think they need to win all of Peavy’s starts.  Chris Carpenter’s likely still going to win the Cy Young, but he had an ugly September.

As a Cardinals fan, I'm worried. However, I don't know if I'm worried because I'm always worried when they reach the playoffs or if it's because they've been very beatable for the past month.

I think it's a mix of both. I don't think this series is going to be as easy for the Cardinals as a lot of people think.

OK, I found 'em on Yahoo. I found them impossible to find on MLB.com, which is odd.

Go Pads!! Gotta cheer for Northwestern's own Mark Loretta. And any team that plays against a Matt Morris team is okay by me. I can't stand that guy.

Any suggestions on which broadcast team to stream while I'm at work? I haven't listened to the Pads team at all this season, and maybe once to the Cards back in April.

I prefer Lightener (sp.?) and Coleman honestly. Shannon's a little too folksy for me and Hagin is way, way too corporate.

I just thought I'd return from beyond the abyss of my doctoral work to say that this series is going to be an ugly piece of crap and the Pardes are going to win it in four, with Carpenter and Morris both totally SUCKING!

Carpenter's getting squeezed.

Just watching on Gameday, it appears that my worries about Carpenter are warranted. A lot of pitches, with poor control, looks more like September Chris than August Chris, which could be big trouble in a short series.

Cardinals, don't let me down?!?!?

Although of course, my firm belief is that this series will be lost by Ray F. King, who has been absolutely atrocious, and will for some odd reason be asked to pitch to Giles with the game on the line at some point.

When King comes in, we could hopefully see a base hit with a runner thrown out at the plate (if King can avoid interfering with Molina catching the ball), but more likely is a walk or hit batsmen, than an ejction, and a Cardinals loss.

Cardinals, don't let me down?!?!?

Any offense by Abraham Rolen or Yadier Matheny would be a lovely bonus.

Pitch counts still have me worried that Ray F. King will be forced to tear himself away from the buffet line to screw up this game somehow.

Tell me again why Roberts should steal against a pitcher who doesn't allow any steals with the heart of the order up, Joe...
   42. The Man in Blak Posted: October 04, 2005 at 01:53 PM (#1661914)
He's had some issues locating the curveball - he's especially left a couple of hangers up in the zone that really should have been clobbered.

Fastball-wise, he's been a little bit of everywhere. Earlier, he was topping out at 89-90 mph, which is about three mph off of his velocity through the summer. He's been hitting 93 on this at-bat with Loretta, though, so maybe he was just warming up a bit.

The rest of his pitches seemed to be as usual - got Peavy swinging on a nice slider. Changeup was working fairly well.

Nice double play by Nunez. I wish I was downtown at the stadium right now.

I keep waiting for Morgan to say that 90% of the game is half mental.

I wish he'd elaborate a little bit more on how Carpenter's rhythm makes it easy to steal off of him, though.

Well, I'm glad pitch counts don't decide games, because the 53 to 19 differential would be tough to make up.

Let's score some runs - someone needs to get on ahead of the big boys here.

There is some lousy defense being played today.

"To facilitate comparison, he devised a standard system into which he transnotated all his examples, as Mersenne had done. While Mersenne's system was designed to highlight the similarities in support of a theory of physical universalism, Rousseau's had the opposite intent of displaying musical diversities in support of a theory of cultural humanism."

Okay. I feel better about today.

But, I'm taking a little extra joy in this game right now because in his chat today, Rob Neyer said that the Cardinals are overrated because they won 100 games. He also said if they can't scratch out a few runs against Peavy, they'd be in trouble.

I think they've done a pretty good job of scratching out a few runs against Peavy.

Hehe.

agreed AO...Carpenter shouldn't pitch the 7th at all.. but it looks like TLR is going to give him a shot at the 7th...90 pitches with a stumble in september and an 8-0 lead, (and 240+ innings pitched) let him rest.

by lucky you mean good and smarter than the rest of the garbage that is in the nl right?

At the risk of getting into a flame war with an obvious fanboy, you must be joking. Your fourth inning could have just as easily not have happened -- a couple of bloops, a wild pitch, and a grounder that the other team's first baseman couldn't handle. Walt Jocketty and TLR weren't mapping out that postseason inning in December. And you've gotten six RBIs out of a guy who had five postseason RBIs for his entire career previously.

I'm not saying the Cards aren't good, but to say they haven't been lucky in this game is to deny reality.
