NL wild card Houston at NL East Champion Atlanta 4:05pm ET on ESPN

A. Pettitte (0-0, NA) vs. T. Hudson (0-0, NA)

Houston can’t hit much, but they sure can pitch.  Tim Hudson is winless in the post-season, but some have blamed that on the influence of Billy Beane.

Well, I'm already at work. Getting #### done early, so that I can get home in time for the game.

Of course, I had to spend half an hour cleaning my bench up first, and I'm gonna spend some time on here, so not much will actually get done.

I have my braves longsleeve and jersey on today, with my recent kickball champions shirt on underneath. I'll be tweaking the outfit depending on the results of today's game.

I do not have a good feeling about this game.
   2. PhillyBooster Posted: October 05, 2005 at 12:02 PM (#1664131)
I am glad this is the early game.

I find it aesthetically displeasing when any series gets more than one game ahead of another. If this was a late game, then another series would be 2-0 or 1-1 before this one started.
   3. Robert in Redondo Posted: October 05, 2005 at 12:38 PM (#1664217)
I do not have a good feeling about this game.

Great news.

As is customary, the Braves will be starting Game 1 with one hand tied behind their back, starting Brian Jordan and Johnny Estrada against Pettitte as Bobby blindly plays the platoon advantage even though those two don't hit at all from the right side and McCann and Langerhans handle lefties just fine.

It is forbidden for the Braves to actually put their best lineup out there in a playoff situation. Although since this is a twilight game, it might not matter whose in the lineup becuase it will be a pitcher's duel either way.
   4. Insert clever/punny handle here (oi!) Posted: October 05, 2005 at 12:47 PM (#1664235)
Not only does Jordan not hit at all from the right side, he doesn't even have a history of hitting Pettitte well. He's 1 for 11 lifetime.

It's a small sample, yes, but it's certainly not a point in his favor.

Langerhans has never faced Pettitte.
   5. Insert clever/punny handle here (oi!) Posted: October 05, 2005 at 01:14 PM (#1664295)
I'm going to miss the whole game, too, because I've got school tonight. And MARTA will probably be crowded thanks to the game. Especially coming home, unless the game runs long. (Class ends at 6:45.)

Hopefully we can at least get a win for my trouble.
   6. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: October 05, 2005 at 01:19 PM (#1664304)
Gee, someone else who uses MARTA :)
Damn I am excited. last year, I went to playoff game 1 and we lost.
So this year, change in strategy! Going to playoff game 2 hopefully. all depending whether my friend can spare an evening before her midterm..
and Grr Bobby.remember how well langerhans hit in Sept, remember how you figured out he has a reverse platoon split? Whatever happened to that? Just give
BJ a bj and get him out of the way please!
I am excited about these playoffs..GOO BRAVES!
   7. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: October 05, 2005 at 01:25 PM (#1664322)
So if I remember right, Pettite made his comeback ffrom injury against the Braves, when we were in the process of sweeping them. I remember him pitching well, though we got some bloopy runs. SO thats not good news.
On general principles though, we should hit lot of flyballs, esp at their CF. He gets the worst jumps imaginable of any full time non-prehistoric CF. Astros also have the white version of Guzman playing SS. Wow, how did this team make the playoffs?

Apparently the people who produce Fox's silly-áss game intros are now moonlighting for ESPN.

Just what I need, George Will waxing nonsensically on my TV screen.

Over the weekend it looked like the Astros would be forced to use their starters on short rest, but they seem to have, ahem, caught a break with the schedule. So I'm wondering, what went into determining which series got the Wednesday start? In the past, it has alternated between AL and NL, but Houston-Atlanta started on Wednesday last year, so that has obviously changed.
   10. The definitely immoral Eric Enders Posted: October 05, 2005 at 02:00 PM (#1664451)
I'm pretty sure FOX (and to a lesser extent ESPN) creates the playoff schedule, so I assume it has something to do with some television issue.

Ah crap. Jordan is STARTING A GAME IN THE PLAYOFFS?!!!!!!

#### me.

I don't mind as much estrada, because with him there's at least a chance, but you can't, can't let jordan start. How'd he even make the roster?

Can someone link me the roster?

I'm heading home in t-18 minutes, so as to be sure to be there when the game starts.

I ride marta when I am in the ATL. Rode it every day to high school and middle school while I was there.
   19. Dummy Ahoy Posted: October 05, 2005 at 02:49 PM (#1664555)
Well to be fair to Jordan, he did hit a triple off famed hurler Jamey Wright a few days back. If that doesn't qualify a body to start in the LDS, I just don't know what does.
   20. Robert in Redondo Posted: October 05, 2005 at 02:53 PM (#1664558)
The Jordan thing doesn't bother so much as the Estrada thing. Jordan hit .263/.329/.408 against lefties this year, not great but at least he has a chance up there. Estrada hit .214/.257/.291 as a righthander this year and his career number aren't much better. As a righthanded batter he's pretty useless, but there you go. In limited chances (38 PAs), McCann hit .333/.385/.556 against lefties.

Here's how this game is going to go.

Early on, first couple of innings, there'll be a ball down the LF line that Langy would've gotten to but Jordan just misses. Two runs score.

Somewhere in the middle innings Jordan will be up with the bases load and two out. He'll chase a couple of pitches out of the strike zone before popping out to second.

The Astros will add two more runs off Hudson/bullpen late in the game, while Atlanta's only score comes from a Chipper solo shot in the 8th.

Astros win 4-1.
