In terms of ratings, I'm a little surprised that America's team II vs the ex-Yankees isn't just blowing the ALCS out of the water. I haven't seen the ratings (anyone) but based on the time slots for the weekend games, the reverse is obviously happening.
   2. Srul Itza Posted: October 15, 2005 at 03:19 PM (#1685305)
The ALCS pits LA (sort of) vs. Chicago. That is, what, the 2nd and 3rd largest markets? So yeah, I would expect that the networks to play up that one.

Also, LA is West Coast. It makes sense to start the late game there.

But the Houston Clemens game is the one I'm pumped for. After this year's post-season heroics, I'm hoping it only takes 2 weeks, instead of 3, for Roger to un-retire and come back for another season.
   3. DTS Posted: October 15, 2005 at 03:25 PM (#1685316)
I'd much rather see John Rodriguez in the lineup instead of So Taguchi ... oh well.

Re ratings -- they are teh suck for the ALCS. Fox finished in third last night. They are teh suck for the NLCS too, probably, as Fox finished in third Thursday night even though they could tailor the viewing to the market, but Thursday's a tough night. Friday's not.

I guess Fox makes the decisions before knowing whether more people will watch AL or NL, because today's Cards/stros game was scheduled for the afternoon on Monday or Tuesday, before the serieseseses started.

Well, as someone has pointed out, it is the #2 teams in those markets. Nonetheless, I just don't think anyone has the drawing power for the casual fan that the Yankees and Red Sox do. Which seems like a shame because there's been a couple of pretty good games so far

Kenny Lofton in the studio.

Kenny Lofton in what may well be the ugliest suit Ive ever seen.

Man, this pregame inanity is excrutiating.

What the hell is Kenny Lofton wearing? It's a like a plaid patterned Kimono Nehru Jacket

Morris looking reasonable out there today. Pretty good locations through two.

Does it really matter who the Cards put on the mound today? With Clemens pitching, the Astros are odds-on favorites to be shut out.
   11. Urban Faber Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:06 PM (#1685407)
I thought Edmonds was going to throw to first there.
   12. Pastor Toastman (PH) Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:07 PM (#1685408)
Clemens shouldn't be shown swinging in slow-motion.

Now the question is, do you send Clemens on a straight steal, or on a hit and run?
   15. Srul Itza Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:07 PM (#1685411)
Posted it a little late. He should have been running.

Well, that's it, then.

2-1, Houston.

Not that it's a surprise; this is like going up against a tank with a spoon and a strainer.
   19. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:10 PM (#1685415)
Great book this is reminding me of: Hearing Things by Leigh Schmidt. It's about the historical basis of Enlightenment thinking on what can or cannot be heard, and the myriad ways in which this "discipline of the senses" was fought for and resisted.

Highly recommended.

Good call at 1B.
   21. Urban Faber Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:11 PM (#1685417)
Or maybe not, on that last angle.

Burk was out on that pickoff.
   23. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:12 PM (#1685421)
Burke broke the plane of the base, but he wasn't touching it.
   24. Eli Hungerford: Cityboy Crypto-Elitist for hire Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:13 PM (#1685422)
Well, it took four strikes and four outs, but Morris got the job done.
   25. DTS Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:14 PM (#1685423)
Maybe there are just more close plays in this postseason, but the umps have consistently missed them. Does merit have anything to do with getting postseason assignments?
   26. DTS Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:16 PM (#1685425)
Burke broke the plane of the base, but he wasn't touching it.

I guess that was just karma knocking him in the face.

Berkman took a good pitch to end that at bat.

Drama. I love this sport of baseball.
   27. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:19 PM (#1685428)
Pujols is great, but he's not Babe Ruth. You pitch to him.

Sox in '04 did just fine facong him down.
   28. Srul Itza Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:22 PM (#1685430)
Drama. I love this sport of baseball.

What drama? You don't really think there is a serious chance of Houston scoring with Roger on the mound?

Walker is either really hurt or really old. He looks pretty much lost at the plate this postseason. Grudz looks even worse, but of course, he didn't have as far to fall.

You don't really think there is a serious chance of Houston scoring with Roger on the mound?

Strange things happen. Like Sarah's husband, for instance.
   37. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:34 PM (#1685446)
315 ft homer!!

Someone needs to fix that ballpark.

You can't throw the ball on the 3B side of the plate.

Apparently he's never watched the Red Sox, Manny does that all the time.

"How often do you see a guy hit one to the opposite field and know it's gone?"

All the time.

Manny at Fenway is one, correct.

Plenty of righties at Yankee Stadium, including Jeter, A-Rod and Sheff.
   42. Srul Itza Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:39 PM (#1685453)
Okay. If Roger can rediscover how to throw a strike, this could be a tough day for the Cards.
   43. Rear Admiral Piazza Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:40 PM (#1685455)
Fortunately for Clemens a large part of the Cardinals lineup is suddenly looking not so fearsome. They really miss Rolen.
   44. 1k5v3L Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:41 PM (#1685456)
Jeter has learned to abuse the RF porch at the Stadium.
   45. rembini06 Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:41 PM (#1685457)
They miss Rolen, Sanders and the "real" Walker.
   46. Rear Admiral Piazza Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:43 PM (#1685459)
However, if the rest of the Cardinals lineup can keep putting it through the infield, they'll be fine
   47. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:44 PM (#1685460)
Swing away? That was pretty cool.

The pitcher bunt with runners on 1st and 2nd always seemed to have a comparatively low success rate. Putting the fielders on their toes a bit is a good idea.
   48. Urban Faber Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:45 PM (#1685462)
No squeeze here?
   49. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:48 PM (#1685464)
Not with a runner on 2nd, I think. Squeeze means less of an opportunity to score more than one.
   50. Urban Faber Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:48 PM (#1685465)
Sac fly works, even got the guy to third. Put me down in the "I like Eckstein" category as well.

Squeezing with a Molina is kinda dangerous.
   52. Urban Faber Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:49 PM (#1685468)
Well, if Clemens is hurting as much as the FOX guys seem to think, this is a good opportunity to pull him.
   53. Bob T Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:50 PM (#1685470)
Squeezing when you're down and you have a chance to bring up Pujols with runners on is a bad idea.
   54. Repoz Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:50 PM (#1685471)
Kenny Lofton is down on Clemens because has has always gotten the collar against him...even tho he saw fit not to wear it today.
   55. Urban Faber Posted: October 15, 2005 at 05:52 PM (#1685475)
He must not be hurting too badly then. He's batting again. Of course, he's been one of their better hitters.
   56. Rear Admiral Piazza Posted: October 15, 2005 at 06:00 PM (#1685482)
Pujols hits a sexy foul ball

The Cards are taking advantage of Burke's weak arm. Did they do that during the regular season?
   73. strong silence Posted: October 15, 2005 at 06:13 PM (#1685506)
That ball started foul and came back in to fair territory.

Clemens got out of it. They were hitting him really hard.

Try telling Roger Clemens, or Roger's mom, that the Astros have a good offense.
   76. Rear Admiral Piazza Posted: October 15, 2005 at 06:16 PM (#1685512)
Burke didn't play center in the regular season normally, so the Cards didn't really have the chance to. This is their way of getting Lamb and Burke (and their hots bats) in.
   77. strong silence Posted: October 15, 2005 at 06:16 PM (#1685513)
Very close call!

Were the umps in good position to see it?

The Cards are taking advantage of Burke's weak arm. Did they do that during the regular season?

Burke hardly played during the regular season, so it's hard to say. I imagine if/when Burke played in the OF, every team took advantage of his 2b's arm.

Someone said that the Cardinals were a more complete team than the Astros.

I still think this is true. The Cards were third in the NL in runs and 1st in ERA. The Astros were 11th in runs (and remember their park) and near the top in ERA. I don't remember exactly.

But, the gap is much smaller with the injuries and in a short series.

He didn't slide TO the base and he raised his left leg - perhaps to trip up Nunez.

About four batters too late, and now no third baseman. Series O-V-E-R.

   88. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 15, 2005 at 06:27 PM (#1685527)
Does that cross the line of a dirty slide?

Lamb's legs were pretty high up in the air, and he landed sideways on third base.

On the other hand, Nunez was in his baseline. My reaction is that's dirty but acceptable.
   89. Rear Admiral Piazza Posted: October 15, 2005 at 06:29 PM (#1685530)
Nunez walked off with help and seemed to be able to sit down in the dugout. I think it is too early to tell how serious it is, but it wasn't pretty, and looked worse than Sanders' fall.
   90. mbd1mbd1 Posted: October 15, 2005 at 06:30 PM (#1685532)
He definitely tried to take out Nunez, but I'm not sure I'd call it dirty. You see worse slides from guys trying to break up double plays.

It seems like the teams with the best pitching are winning their playoff series.

The Astros are scary. A 1 or 2 run lead in the 8th and the game is over.

Everett was Boston's first round pick in 1998? What were the Sox thinking? They could've had Lidge instead...

The Yankees should've tried a bit harder to sign the 43rd pick in 1998.
