Cardinals, you think you are big time? You are going to (forgetin') lose big time! COME GET THE PAIN!

Alas, Tom D. has parent-teacher conferences. In the unlikely event that the conferences are rained out and the game is played, I will find a way to get there.

It'll be terrible watching Aaron Miles' easy 10th-inning grounder go through Carlos Delgado's legs and roll into right.

It'll be terrible watching Aaron Miles' easy 10th-inning grounder go through Carlos Delgado's legs and roll into right.

But joyous watching him try to stretch it into a double, as Endy Chavez throws him out from RF for the pennant-winning OF kill!!!!

Are there any Cardinals fans in this chatter?
   14. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:03 PM (#2215465)
I'm a Cardinals fan, but I don't care whether they win or not.

I think that's the way a lot of Cardinal fans feel this year--sort of embarassed.
   15. You Forgot Walewander Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:04 PM (#2215466)
I'm kind of rooting for them, even though I strongly dislike them. Because I'm a Tigers fan.

Kevin Kennedy looks like someone attacked the lower half of his face with a cheese grater.
   16. Sam M. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:04 PM (#2215467)
So do you know what the two Mets' losses in this series have in common? Do you?

That's right: I missed both games in their entirety, attending my reunion. I take all the blame.
   17. Tom D Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:07 PM (#2215472)
That's right: I missed both games in their entirety, attending my reunion. I take all the blame.

I was thinking that. But, I'm too classy a guy to mention it.
   18. You Forgot Walewander Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:07 PM (#2215473)
Vaux, you're a Tigers fan, an As fan, and a Cardinals fan?
   19. Sam M. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:09 PM (#2215474)
Because I'm a Tigers fan.

Now come on. When all is said and done, if the Tigers win, wouldn't you really rather look back on a title that included wins over both New York franchises along the way? If nothing else, there must be 10x as many Mets' fans as Cardinals' fans around here to enjoy winning against, right? Then there's the whole media favoring New York thing to revel in.
   20. Tommy Etelamaki Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:09 PM (#2215475)
Jeannie Zalasko: "Advantage Mets?"

Kevin Kennedy: "Well, if you believe in stats, and normally I don't believe in them unless they're pretty dramatic."

I know that Zelasko isn't really technically especially attractive, but I find her very compelling, she holds me eyes. Is it just me?
   22. AJM Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:14 PM (#2215482)
Is it just me?

Yes.
   23. Sam M. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:14 PM (#2215483)
Vaux, you're a Tigers fan, an As fan, and a Cardinals fan?

He's either a man of the world, or a whore. Take your pick.
   24. You Forgot Walewander Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:16 PM (#2215484)
Sam, some pros and cons:

1) yes, beating both NY teams would ve cool

2) I like the Mets fans around here, so have no desire to rub it in if we did win

3) (and most important) I want a WS where it's about THE TIGERS Vs -----, not us as some plucky underdog hoping to fluke one against the Mets instead of being recognized as the very good team we are. The fallout from the Yankees series almost made my head explode. Fair or not, I feel that if they were to beat the Cards, people would say it was because the Tigers were good. Not so if they were to beat the Mets

4) This might be their only shot for a while, and I REALLY want them to win

5) Never underestimate how much I hate LaRussa

6)and love Delgado. My affection for this Mets team would make it not as fun
   25. B.G. Gamesh Reeks of Anti-Yankee Bias (w/Zombies) Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:17 PM (#2215486)

Well, since John Donovan on CNN.SI has already written a column (today) saying either NL team has virtually no chance against the Tigers, and I suspect that is going to be the media consensus even if the Mets win, I don't think you have to worry over much about that. The Tigers beating the Yankees, and then crushing the A's, plus their newly-crowned status as the champs of the universally-understood Better League, assures them of being "recognized as the very good team" they are.
   28. Joshemy Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:21 PM (#2215490)
Great start Reyes.
   29. AJM Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:21 PM (#2215491)
Good start. Let's get some early runs.

Jose!!!! (Jose, Jo-SAY, Jo-SAY!!!!)
   31. Banta Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:21 PM (#2215493)
Good start. Reyes on base, early and then hopefully often.
   32. Sam M. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:22 PM (#2215495)
Damn, LoDuca. Take some pitches, will ya????
   33. bunyon Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:23 PM (#2215496)
I'll be missing the game tonight with work. Good luck all.
   34. Banta Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:23 PM (#2215497)
Damn, I can't believe Reyes got out there. Whenever there's a dive, I always expect Reyes to be safe, regardless of the base he's running to.
   35. B.G. Gamesh Reeks of Anti-Yankee Bias (w/Zombies) Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:23 PM (#2215498)
I hate booing guys on the other team just because they're good.
   36. Alan S Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:25 PM (#2215499)
Beltran looks very good right now.
   37. Joshemy Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:26 PM (#2215500)
Carlos #1!

Let's keep the hot streak going Carlos #2!
   38. Alan S Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:28 PM (#2215501)
Well, Weaver is not fooling anyone with anything through 4 at bats.
   39. Banta Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:28 PM (#2215502)
Well, I guess Delgado can't do it everytime.

Let's go, David!
   40. AJM Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:28 PM (#2215503)
Beh, come on David.
   41. Joshemy Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:29 PM (#2215504)
OK David, get the 2 out hit to get the early lead.
   42. Alan S Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:29 PM (#2215505)
Delgado looks like he decides before the pitch which direction he's going to go with the pitch, and when he's wrong he does not adjust. When he is right though, the ball is crushed.
   43. You Forgot Walewander Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:29 PM (#2215506)
Ahh, this is the Jeff Weaver I remember.
   44. AJM Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:30 PM (#2215508)
####.
   45. Alan S Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:31 PM (#2215509)
ARGH David. Not very good. But unless Weaver gets better, there shall be runs aplenty tonight.
   46. Joshemy Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:31 PM (#2215510)
Bah!
   47. Sam M. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:31 PM (#2215511)
Bad approach. Didn't zone the 2-1 pitch, and bailed out Weaver. Ugh.
   48. Banta Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:31 PM (#2215512)
Remember when David used to try and go to rightfield with two strikes?
   49. Bob Koo Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:32 PM (#2215514)
David, you need to stop bailing out pitchers like that.
   50. Sam M. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:33 PM (#2215515)
LoDuca's AB hurt us there. If he just makes an out, Reyes goes first-to-third on Beltran's hit. Changes the inning entirely. Oh well. Come on, Tommy. Be the man, baby.
   51. You Forgot Walewander Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:33 PM (#2215516)
That Donovan column is awful. It would take any kind of miracle for the Mets to beat the Tigers, much less one of 2004 Red Sox proportions. There was also this:

when the World Series begins Saturday.

WTF? I thought it started on Friday nite.
   52. Sam M. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:35 PM (#2215518)
That was a bad start. Showed they have the right idea, and they got a good result. Yuk.
   53. You Forgot Walewander Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:35 PM (#2215519)
And by 'would', I of course meant wouldn't take any kind of miracle...
   54. Banta Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:36 PM (#2215520)
Glavine's up in the zone so far. Not good.

Settle down, Tommy!
   55. Alan S Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:36 PM (#2215521)
Preston has been pretty helpful this series.
   56. Sam M. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:36 PM (#2215522)
Thank you, Preston. Bailed Tommy out on what would have been ball three. Excellent.
   57. You Forgot Walewander Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:36 PM (#2215523)
Well that was a godawfyl swing. Seriously, Preston Wilson in the 2 hole? It surprises me every time I see it.

It begins on Saturday.

Kinda like the miracle that took the Tigers over the Yankees?
   59. Banta Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:37 PM (#2215526)
Great at bat, Pujols!
   60. Sam M. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:37 PM (#2215527)
Impressed yet, Prince Albert?
   61. AJM Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:37 PM (#2215528)
Phew, he gets Pujols. I get nervous every time he comes up.

Flynn, see 53. I mistyped.

Ah. apologies.

WS still starts on Saturday though. ;)

Nice throw Blow Duca.
   66. Sam M. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:40 PM (#2215535)
What is McCarver talking about? That pitch was way inside.

And, out of the inning. Nice.
   67. Banta Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:41 PM (#2215536)
Good enough, Glavine.
   68. Joshemy Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:41 PM (#2215537)
Nice Tommy!
   69. You Forgot Walewander Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:41 PM (#2215538)
Why would you swing at that pitch?
   70. Free Rob Base Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:41 PM (#2215539)
someone on espn today said the mets would be the 6th best team in the AL. What does that make STL. Worse than the D-Rays?
   71. AJM Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:41 PM (#2215540)
Nice job Tommy.
   72. Bob Koo Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:43 PM (#2215543)
Wilson and Encarnacion, thanks for bailing us out there. Oh, and you too, Albert.
   73. Free Rob Base Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:45 PM (#2215546)
Also, in the first, I would have loved to have seen Reyes not slide into second, and instead run through second and round for third. Maybe he wins the ensuing rundown.
   74. Sam M. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:46 PM (#2215547)
someone on espn today said the mets would be the 6th best team in the AL.

God, I am so tired of that smug AL arrogance. It is going to make it awfully tough to root for the Tigers if the Cardinals win this. I'll do it, but man I'm going to regret it for that one reason. That is such utter bullcrap. The AL is great, but the Mets are as good as any damn team in that league. Screw 'em.
   75. Joshemy Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:46 PM (#2215548)
Shawn Green with a good 'ol "Mientkiewicz".

I was pretty ambivalent at the beginning of the series, but I'm firmly in the Mets camp now. They're less mediocre than the Cards. Plus my cousin used to work for them.

Agreed.
   81. Dayton Moore is a Big Fat Idiot (AG#1F) Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:50 PM (#2215555)
The healthy Mets are as good as any AL team. Without Pedro and El Duque they seem mighty pedestrian to me.
   82. not your average baseball fan Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:50 PM (#2215556)
Did Willie give the Mets permission to grow facial hair? They all have that unshaven look now, even Glavine who I never remember having facial hair. It's not a bad look.

The Royals swept the Tigers, so they're probably the best team in baseball at the moment.

shawn green is a wreck defensively.
   85. Sam M. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:54 PM (#2215561)
Shawn Green . . . I am a Rock, I am an Island.
   86. Alan S Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:56 PM (#2215564)
Not a very large strike zone.
   87. Urban Faber Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:56 PM (#2215565)
It's not like the Cards are starting Bob Gibson in Game 7 either ... even though Suppan didn't allow a run and hit a homer in his last start.

Maybe the Fox folks will dig up some info on Curly Ogden in 1924. That strategy worked, at least, the Senators won the game.

Also split six with the Cards.

Who are some crafty right-handers in the league right now?

Hoorah! Glavine is awesome.

sweeeeet
   92. Banta Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:57 PM (#2215570)
Well, that was pretty damn sweet.
   93. Sam M. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:57 PM (#2215571)
Excellent!!!! Pretty good gamble by the Cardinals, actually, but Glavine/LoDuca make 'em pay!
   94. You Forgot Walewander Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:58 PM (#2215572)
Way to manage, Tony.
   95. not your average baseball fan Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:58 PM (#2215573)
what is it with Belliard and the tongue? He's like a lizard. Ooh-great strike-em out throw-em out!
   96. Joshemy Posted: October 17, 2006 at 07:58 PM (#2215574)
Throw 'em out, strike 'em out!

Only 26 pitches through 2 for Tommy. I'm liking it.

Steve Trachsel.

He said crafty, not crappy.
   100. Sam M. Posted: October 17, 2006 at 08:01 PM (#2215578)
Way to manage, Tony.

I'd have done the same thing. Glavine doesn't strike out many hitters (only four in each of his first two starts), and LoDuca doesn't throw out many runners. It was a decent gamble in light of those two facts. He just crapped out.
