NLCS Game 6: NL Wild Card Houston at NL Central Champ St. Louis, 8:05pm ET on FOX

R. Oswalt vs. M. Mulder

Astros lead series 3-2

I don’t really like Houston’s chances in the next two games, but Oswalt could come up big.  despite his 5.21 ERA against St. Louis this season.

Tick-tock.

A dark cloud hovers
over the Astros
not unlike
the dark shadows of
Zelaskoan bosoms
hovering over
the unsuspecting face
of a sleeping
Kevin Kennedy.

Follow that

How many times has a team been in the Astros' situation (up 3-1, loses game 6) and was considered such an underdog in games 6 and 7?

BPro still gives the Astros a 70% chance of winning the series (dropping from an 87% chance before game 5).

I don't know about that, but I still think the Astros will win it. The Cards are pretty banged-up right now.

I haven't seen the lines today, but I'm talking about the Vegas lines (and yes, I know that's cause it's how everybody is betting, etc).

I think it's hysterical that a poster on baseball chick's Astros blog said something like "if the Astros win this, it'll be the mother of all comebacks."

How do you "come back" from leading? (Yeah, yeah, I know where they're coming from, but it still seems strange.)

Vegas has Houston a big favorite to win the NLCS...bet $183 to win $100 on the Astros going to the World Series.

Do they really have to play tonight? These past two days have been bliss.

I suppose it would be appropriate for someone else nicknamed 'The Wizard of Oz' to close down Busch.
   9. rembini06 Posted: October 19, 2005 at 01:44 PM (#1692803)
Tradesports is only giving the Astros a 40% chance tonight, which is awfully darn low.

Even if you can accept it as a "comeback," which is a stretch, it is certainly not "the mother of all."

Oswalt vs Mulder, in Busch Stadium following that game the other night and you think that giving the astros 40% chance to win is low? unless you mean they are giving them 40% for the series, then that I agree with, that would be low, but heck home vs visitors would almost go 40/60, and that is excluding any circumstances.

   15. DTS Posted: October 19, 2005 at 06:17 PM (#1693304)
As per MLB.com, here are tonight's starting lineups:

Biggio 2b
Tavarez CF
Berkman 1b
Ensberg 3b
Lane RF
Burke LF
Ausmus C
Everett SS
Oswalt P

Eckstein SS
Edmonds CF
Pujols 1b
Walker RF
Sanders LF
Grudz 2b
Molina C
Nunez 3b
Mulder P

No surprises.

Nunez is back, which if nothing else, gives the Cardinals their best infield defense behind Mulder.

Tavarez is back in the lineup.

More like 45/55 at best, and that obviously doesn't consider just how much better Oswalt is than Mulder.

8:45 is pretty much the standard starting time for these.

It's supposed to be 8:28, but on the weekends anything goes.

No matter who wins this series, this would be the greatest comeback of all time in an LCS since ... 2004.
   20. DTS Posted: October 19, 2005 at 06:45 PM (#1693344)
Monday night's game started at 7:29 CDT. Takes them forever to get to the action, and since I can't stand to watch the pregame stuff, I'm always in danger of missing the first pitch.

Today I started selecting a bunch of stats for comfort, b/c I facing Oswalt is scary. Here are some of the better ones (mind you, I ignored anything that might look good for the Astros):

For the season, the Cardinals' home winning percentage was 61% while the Astros' road winning percentage was just 44%.

Oswalt's regular season ERA of over 6 against the Cardinals and the Astros' only scored 3.375 runs/game at Busch during the regular season.

Mulder's ERA at Busch this year is 2.59, his ERA against the Astros is 2.48, and his postseason ERA is 1.32. And, most telling is Mulder's numbers at Busch against the Astros this year, including the postseason: 25 IP, 2 ER, 0.72 ERA.

And, yes, I fully realize that all this means jack tonight. Getting time to strap 'em on.

More like 45/55 at best, and that obviously doesn't consider just how much better Oswalt is than Mulder.

From what voros M. posted at the beginning of the playoffs, 40/60 is a pretty typical road/home split in the postseason.

Thanks for the comfort, DTS. I can't believe how nervous I am over this.

How many times has a team been in the Astros' situation (up 3-1, loses game 6) and was considered such an underdog in games 6 and 7?

1986 Angels? They had Kirk McCaskill and John Candelaria starting the last two games.
   24. DTS Posted: October 19, 2005 at 07:48 PM (#1693474)
I can't believe how nervous I am over this.

Well, now it's not just about getting to the world series. It's about protecting or establishing a legacy for Game 5's heroics. You know what I mean? If the Astros win 14-0 tonight, Pujols' homer is but a footnote in baseball history. If the Cards go on to win the NLCS, then Pujols' homer will be remembered as what won the NLCS for the Cardinals. Rightly or wrongly.

Good times are ahead.

I'm really getting sick of the Babe Ruth commercial. It makes absolutely NO sense at all.

As someone pointed out last game, there were no beer vendors during Prohibition.

Also, why the hell would he point to the beer guy as if he wants a beer from him and then hit a homerun in that direction?

Maybe I'm thinking too much into it.

God, I'm torn.

I picked the Cardinals. If they win the next two, I'll have gotten all six series right.

But I've always disliked the Cardinals.

I'd love to see Biggio and Bagwell make it to the World Series.

But I despise Clemens, and am not real fond of Oswalt (though I think they're both terrific pitchers).

I generally like to see the team I think deserves it win (unless I have a rooting interest), and I think the Cardinals really deserve it, as the dominant team in the league all year.

But I'd love to see the Astros break their 40+ year drought of never seeing the promised land, especially given the heartbreaks of 1980 and 1986.

Guess I'll have to be neutral.
