First!

I'm so pumped.

Let's Go! Mets Go!

It huoght the mets were the prime time game. I was really looking forward to an early start for the yanks.

I'm on my way in about three hours, but I'll be Chattering in spirit. FWIW, I have a solid 5-2 (.714)record at Mets postseason games, which would be 6-2 if the Brad Clontz wild pitch game counted.

Of course, I don't know who's pitching. At least for today, I'm OK with Maine. There is a very strong bias in the NY media for 36 year old twelve year veterans starting in the postseason. An awful lot of postseason games have been won by pitchers younger than George Blanda.

I think the game is on Fox. That makes going an added bonus. The obligatory five to six shots of fans in the crowd between pitches makes me nauseous.

LETS GO METS!!!!!!!!!!

ESPN. Today's games are on ESPN.

Who's the idiot that scheduled the game at 4pm? Nice to have a game between teams in the two biggest markets in the country that nodoby can actually watch because they have this thing called work.

I coulda swore the mets got the prime time game today

Including a certain law prof with a class that begins at 5:35, which cannot be cancelled because students are giving graded presentations. I find it hard to believe ESPN really will get better ratings with the Yankees/Detroit in prime time than Mets/Dodogers, but what the hell do I know about these things?

Per Metsblog...

"A few moments ago, the Mets officially told reporters the following…

John Maine will start today’s game against the Dodgers…

Orlando Hernandez will not be on the team’s roster for the NLDS. He has a tear in his calf, and is questionable for the NLCS, as well…

Royce Ring and Oliver Perez are on the team’s 25–man roster. Mike DiFelice is not…

Tom Glavine will pitch Game Two, while Steve Trachsel will pitch in Game Three…"

Personally, I hope Royce Ring never sees the mound. And the thought of the possibility of Oliver Perez starting Game 4 scares the crap out of me.

Though I as an A's fan am annoyed that our three games start at 10, 10, and 1 out here, I guess I understand why. In terms of this one, they're probably figuring that Joe Blow in Nebraska might randomly sit down after dinner and watch the Yankees play (Jeter! ARod! Proctor!), but Mets/Dodgers? Probably not. And they know they're getting a lot of viewers in the home markets regardless. Still doesn't make it any less annoying.

I get off work at 2 PM, but I'm hoping we are not busy at all and I can follow the game online til then. Not that it matters since I don't know where I could find a tv with ESPN at that time anyway. Either way, lets go mets!

A Met playoff game. Lets do this.

I would like to go on record in saying that Endy Chavez should be playing every inning, especially when you consider that our suboptimal starting pitching will need all the defensive help it can get. Sorry Cliff, we love you, but Endy's simply the better player at this very moment.

Sorry Cliff, we love you, but Endy's simply the better player at this very moment.

Don't you mean, "Sorry Shawn, we don't even like you much, but Endy's simply the better player at the moment"?

Why in the world should they bench Floyd rather than Green for Endy???

My office building is apparently death to AM, because I can't get any reception in here. Does anyone know of an online stream that will carry the game, or alternatively, an FM station in the DC area?

Sam:
Green, .809 OPS in September.
Floyd, .629 OPS in September.

Green's not any good either, but c'mon, Floyd has shown no indication that he's able to hit or field well right now.

Willie just said on the FAN that he thinks Drew is a more formidable hitter than Nomar due to his batting eye. He's not that stupid, sometimes it seems.

This was the the major benefit when my firm was in Times Square. The financial district is lacking in good sports bars.

Willie also said that he might use Castro late for defensive purposes. I'm optimistic that he'll pull the right strings in this postseason. Well, except for the foolish decision to carry Ring at the expense of another hitter.

what about that irish place right by the WTC site - sort of behind the building with Brooks Brothers/Cleary Gottlieb?

I'll be in the DC espn zone, in case anybody happens by and wants to say hello.

Sample size, Bob. Sample size. Cliff Floyd had 55 ABs in September. That's nothing. Shawn Green had 80, and most of his good stuff was in one great double-header.

I have zero doubt that Cliff Floyd is a far more dangerous and better hitter than Shawn Green. My outfield would be Floyd-Beltran-Chavez.

It is something when you're trying to show that you're back in the swing of things after a long layoff. He's shown nada. We all have a soft spot in our heart for Cornelius, but the cold truth is that Floyd has done nothing to indicate that he's not the worst option of the three corner OF's. At least Green has good numbers vs. Lowe, and has shown a few signs of life (even in the last week of the season).

Now you could make the argument that Chavez's defense is more valuable in right field, so Floyd should start in left. I might be able to buy that. Of course, I just hope I'm wrong and Floyd hits a 3-run homer today. But it's more likely that he could kill a rally as the first easy out behind all the good hitters.

One more hour till game time. Let's go Mets!

I love the fact the Dodgers have one lefty in the pen, and he's a normal shitty starter.

That was the HUGE weakness of the teams we faced in 1986. The Astros' Achilles heel that year was the lack of a lefty in the pen, and it was also a problem for the Red Sox, who had Joe Sambito WAY past his prime.

This time around, for a team facing this Mets' line-up, that weakness is a big one. It is quite likely to cost the Dodgers some runs, and it could well cost them a game in this series.
   39. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: October 04, 2006 at 03:26 PM (#2197654)
Haha! Marlon Anderson in LF? Jesus.
   40. Bob Koo Posted: October 04, 2006 at 03:30 PM (#2197666)
Marlon can only hit the fastball, so he might do well vs. Maine. What I don't understand is why Nomar and Kent aren't being broken up. That makes it easier for Bradford/Hernandez in the later innings, not to mention that it means that you're hitting your best hitter (Drew) 5th.
   41. Sam M. Posted: October 04, 2006 at 03:39 PM (#2197685)
Obviously, the Dodgers' line-up is not as dangerous as the Mets. But . . . don't sell them short. Drew and Martin are outstanding hitters, and Kent is dicey. They can score some runs.

And remember: their bench, I think, is actually substantially stronger than ours, with Ethier, Loney, and Lugo (among others). We have Endy and Father Time™. Not comforting. If the Mets are ahead in a close game late, our bullpen will have to deal with some very strong pinch-hitters.

You are looking at this the wrong way, Sam. Their pinch-hitters will have to deal with our bullpen. Best in the majors, IMO. I don't care who you have on the bench. If Bradford can get Pujols to GIDP in a big spot, I ain't gonna be scared of Olmedo Saenz.

God, am I nervous.
   43. Sam M. Posted: October 04, 2006 at 03:53 PM (#2197720)
I agree with that, Emad. Absolutely. My point was just to say that we shouldn't be selling the Dodgers short: they are a good team, playing well. To scoff because they are starting Marlon Anderson in LF is to risk ignoring their strengths.
