I'm so pumped.
Let's Go! Mets Go!
Of course, I don't know who's pitching. At least for today, I'm OK with Maine. There is a very strong bias in the NY media for 36 year old twelve year veterans starting in the postseason. An awful lot of postseason games have been won by pitchers younger than George Blanda.
I think the game is on Fox. That makes going an added bonus. The obligatory five to six shots of fans in the crowd between pitches makes me nauseous.
LETS GO METS!!!!!!!!!!
ESPN. Today's games are on ESPN.
Including a certain law prof with a class that begins at 5:35, which cannot be cancelled because students are giving graded presentations. I find it hard to believe ESPN really will get better ratings with the Yankees/Detroit in prime time than Mets/Dodogers, but what the hell do I know about these things?
"A few moments ago, the Mets officially told reporters the following…
John Maine will start today’s game against the Dodgers…
Orlando Hernandez will not be on the team’s roster for the NLDS. He has a tear in his calf, and is questionable for the NLCS, as well…
Royce Ring and Oliver Perez are on the team’s 25–man roster. Mike DiFelice is not…
Tom Glavine will pitch Game Two, while Steve Trachsel will pitch in Game Three…"
Personally, I hope Royce Ring never sees the mound. And the thought of the possibility of Oliver Perez starting Game 4 scares the crap out of me.
I object!
Though I as an A's fan am annoyed that our three games start at 10, 10, and 1 out here, I guess I understand why. In terms of this one, they're probably figuring that Joe Blow in Nebraska might randomly sit down after dinner and watch the Yankees play (Jeter! ARod! Proctor!), but Mets/Dodgers? Probably not. And they know they're getting a lot of viewers in the home markets regardless. Still doesn't make it any less annoying.
A Met playoff game. Lets do this.
The SP scared the crap out of me at the deadline and now my worst fears are realized but.....
Lets Go Mets!
LETS GO METS!
Don't you mean, "Sorry Shawn, we don't even like you much, but Endy's simply the better player at the moment"?
Why in the world should they bench Floyd rather than Green for Endy???
I will be sneaking out at 4 to go to the sweet, sweet ESPN zone. Yay position of responsibility!
Green, .809 OPS in September.
Floyd, .629 OPS in September.
Green's not any good either, but c'mon, Floyd has shown no indication that he's able to hit or field well right now.
This was the the major benefit when my firm was in Times Square. The financial district is lacking in good sports bars.
what about that irish place right by the WTC site - sort of behind the building with Brooks Brothers/Cleary Gottlieb?
I'll be in the DC espn zone, in case anybody happens by and wants to say hello.
Floyd, .629 OPS in September.
Sample size, Bob. Sample size. Cliff Floyd had 55 ABs in September. That's nothing. Shawn Green had 80, and most of his good stuff was in one great double-header.
I have zero doubt that Cliff Floyd is a far more dangerous and better hitter than Shawn Green. My outfield would be Floyd-Beltran-Chavez.
Yeah, there's not much pickings in this area. I'm on Williams Street.
I'm a huge fan of the ESPN zone. Good times.
Good omen No. 1!
It is something when you're trying to show that you're back in the swing of things after a long layoff. He's shown nada. We all have a soft spot in our heart for Cornelius, but the cold truth is that Floyd has done nothing to indicate that he's not the worst option of the three corner OF's. At least Green has good numbers vs. Lowe, and has shown a few signs of life (even in the last week of the season).
Now you could make the argument that Chavez's defense is more valuable in right field, so Floyd should start in left. I might be able to buy that. Of course, I just hope I'm wrong and Floyd hits a 3-run homer today. But it's more likely that he could kill a rally as the first easy out behind all the good hitters.
Floyd's defense is significantly better than Green's.

One more hour till game time. Let's go Mets!
That was the HUGE weakness of the teams we faced in 1986. The Astros' Achilles heel that year was the lack of a lefty in the pen, and it was also a problem for the Red Sox, who had Joe Sambito WAY past his prime.
This time around, for a team facing this Mets' line-up, that weakness is a big one. It is quite likely to cost the Dodgers some runs, and it could well cost them a game in this series.
And remember: their bench, I think, is actually substantially stronger than ours, with Ethier, Loney, and Lugo (among others). We have Endy and Father Time™. Not comforting. If the Mets are ahead in a close game late, our bullpen will have to deal with some very strong pinch-hitters.
God, am I nervous.

You can be our Chris Cotter for this game.
Nice inning from Maine.
Well, I guess, but I don't know what the point is.
Nice inning from Maine.
Let's get on them early Carlos #2!
Come on D-Wright! Start your Mets playoff history now!
Lots of names came off this year..
all they talked about during the As game wsa Jeter and split coffee
Burnitz is the hitter. Trachsel is the pitcher for a few more days.
Maine looks like he has a good fastball...secondary pitches?
Helton has to be up there too.
Come on Maine, get out of the jam.
I'm their honorary fan here. Every fifth day I sit and listen to the crickets in the Chatter. Peaceful.
