NLCS Game 1: NL Wild Card Houston at NL Central Champion St. Louis, 8:05 PM ET on either FOX or FX

A. Pettitte vs. C. Carpenter

Carpenter’s health has to be a concern at this point for St. Louis, but they’ve got the firepower to weather it.  I’m still amazed at the run Houston is on given their offensive weaknesses.  I guess that’s the benefit of having three legit No. 1 starters.

I see zero justification for putting these games on at the same time.

It's because FOX has conspired all year to keep me from watching my beloved Cardinals. Part of their master plan.

Is FOX actually showing either game or will they be airing a three-hour video package of 2005 Yankee season highlights?

Starting with the pre-season and ending with Game 4 of the ALDS, of course.

I guess that’s the benefit of having three legit No. 1 starters.

That's also the benefit of getting to face the Braves' bullpen in the first round.

why should there be a concern about Carpenters health??

because his hand cramped up in the sixth inning of a 3hit shutout?
   7. Urban Faber Posted: October 12, 2005 at 07:11 PM (#1680114)
Astacio on the Houston roster; Luke Scott is off.
   8. stubbyc Posted: October 12, 2005 at 07:16 PM (#1680121)
In Brad Lidge's 26.2IP against the Cards over the last 2 years (including the NLCS last year) he has allowed 4 hits and struckout 36.
   9. 1k5v3L Posted: October 12, 2005 at 07:31 PM (#1680139)
the astros should have lidge start the first four games of the series... and go 9 innings in each of them...

the astros should have lidge start the first four games of the series... and go 9 innings in each of them...

can he hit??? as pitching doesn't seem like it's going to be Astros problem in this series, at least according to every expert out there.
   11. Halofan Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:00 PM (#1680168)
All 3 Molinas are in the starting lineups tonight.
   12. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:10 PM (#1680177)
all 3??? I thought they were all weak hitting catchers, are they letting one dh?
   13. Urban Faber Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:13 PM (#1680179)
Bengie is tonight's DH, yes. Probably a move to rest him after catching three games in three nights in three different cities (also they won yesterday and they're facing a lefty).
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:27 PM (#1680189)
ok, ummm are we counting stupid things announcers say??

I think it was Kennedy that just said "they'll hit and run with everyone in the lineup, including the pitchers"....aren't pitchers usually one of the guys you do hit and runs with? maybe I'm just used to TLR, but it seems somewhat second nature to let the pitcher hit and run
   15. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:32 PM (#1680197)
Willy Taveras is not the NL ROTY.
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:32 PM (#1680199)
great reasoning for rookie of the year
"he was on the team the whole year"

not that I don't think Taveras shouldn't be considered, but I just think that that reasoning weakens your argument.
   17. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:34 PM (#1680201)
why not Taveras?
   18. The Mexicoan George Jefferson(Sheriff Blalock) Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:37 PM (#1680214)
How hard hit was that double? How good did Carp look? Any help is appreciated, I'm stuck at work until 8.
   19. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:38 PM (#1680218)
why not Taveras?

His numbers are terrible. Howard, Francoeur, and Duke are all much better choices.
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:38 PM (#1680217)
the double was a misplay by Edmonds, should have been caught.

Carp looks great, Eckstein with a quick single.
   21. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:44 PM (#1680234)
he is a centerfielder, and plays good defense, and as mentioned he also played the entire season, which has some value(not reason for the award of course but does add value, and validity to the rate stats)

I mean great defense at centerfield, combined with speed, solid if not spectacular play all year long, and tons of plate appearances.
   22. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:48 PM (#1680244)
damn, that Astros pitching is just going to beat us to death..

actually Pettitte is the one guy I was the most scared of.

REG-GIE, REG-GIE!!!!!!
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:48 PM (#1680248)
wow, Walker looked really bad on that swing.

details, please?

sorry, but Walker just looks bad against Pettitte... he k'ed looking, but his two swings were like he was a career al pitcher taking his first swings in the national league.
   28. The Mexicoan George Jefferson(Sheriff Blalock) Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:53 PM (#1680261)
I just checked my e-mail and my name was picked in the lottery for WS tickets!!!!!!!!!!

Hell ###### yeah! Now they just have to make it!

I guess I should check my e-mail
   30. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:55 PM (#1680276)
Carpenter so far looks sharp tonite...other than Edmonds Miscue, he has been in complete control.
   31. The Mexicoan George Jefferson(Sheriff Blalock) Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:55 PM (#1680278)
You have to do the waiting room thing, and it's Saturday AM only, but I'll take it.
   32. The Mexicoan George Jefferson(Sheriff Blalock) Posted: October 12, 2005 at 08:57 PM (#1680283)
I'm outta here. I hope you get in there too, CFB. (Be back in 45 minutes at home)

Congrats Sheriff.
   34. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:01 PM (#1680303)
damn Nunez has turned it back on, after struggling most of September.
   35. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:03 PM (#1680311)
even when they know it's coming, TLR out manages the other team.

I guess this doesn't qualify as a "big game" ...
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:15 PM (#1680346)
damn game is slowing down again...I hate it when Carpenter does that. if he is just rearing back and throwing he is on his game, taking his time slows it down.
   39. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:18 PM (#1680353)
Carpenter just wanted Willy on first to get an easier double play.
   40. The Mexicoan George Jefferson(Sheriff Blalock) Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:31 PM (#1680373)
Hope it pays off, Red.

Carp seems pretty wild, but he's had a week off, so it isnt a total surprise.
   41. The Mexicoan George Jefferson(Sheriff Blalock) Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:34 PM (#1680379)
Great throw, great tag! What a great throw.
   42. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:34 PM (#1680380)
Great play by Nunez.....Cardinals would have gotten that run home.
   43. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:40 PM (#1680391)
good play by Lamb for the Dp.
   44. The Mexicoan George Jefferson(Sheriff Blalock) Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:40 PM (#1680392)
There's been some nice D this game, and I've only seen one full inning.
   45. Sparkles Peterson Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:41 PM (#1680393)
Nunez's play worked, but it was still a pretty stupid move. Molina made it as quickly as humanly possible and still beat the runner by about one inch.
   46. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:43 PM (#1680395)
if it works it isn't stupid play.

with us having the lead, it wasn't that big of a risk. the double play was still in order, so it didn't change much.
   47. The Mexicoan George Jefferson(Sheriff Blalock) Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:48 PM (#1680403)
Like Mulder said on the mic, it would have been a tough play to first. Everett is no Molina on the bases.
   48. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:51 PM (#1680413)
The concern about Carpenter's health is that he's thrown 240 innings this year and he stunk for the last month.

He'll likely collapse in the sixth or seventh, Pettitte will get the "win," and be remembered for another clutch performance.
   49. The Mexicoan George Jefferson(Sheriff Blalock) Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:51 PM (#1680414)
I love Eckstein!!!
   50. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:51 PM (#1680416)
Lyons(I think) called that Eckstein hit.
   51. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:52 PM (#1680418)
Yea, Vaux has guaranteed our victory.

Glad to see you Vaux, thanks for the Karma.
   52. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:54 PM (#1680422)
Thanks Vaux, that run was purely your doing.
   53. Sparkles Peterson Posted: October 12, 2005 at 09:58 PM (#1680430)
I'm not sure I'd greenlight Larry Walker at 0-2 right now, much less 3-0...
   54. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:00 PM (#1680434)
I don't think that any of the cardinals get a "take" sign, and I'm pretty sure that none of the stars are instructed to take.

Carpenter looks terrible, yet has 6 shutout innings.
   57. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:07 PM (#1680444)
I would say that Carpenter looks inconsistent, not terrible.
   58. Sparkles Peterson Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:16 PM (#1680452)
Chris Carpenter has a career postseason ERA of 0.00. This makes him the best postseason pitcher of all time.
   59. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:17 PM (#1680457)
because of all the injuries, that is why TLR is the best manager in baseball.

of course cox is going to get the manager of the year, and he has a good case, after all Francoeur, Betemit and Langerhans had less potential than Taguchi, Nunez and J-rod.
   60. Sparkles Peterson Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:20 PM (#1680459)
I HAVE TEMPTED FATE O NO!
   61. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:20 PM (#1680460)
damn, now all the sudden the astros are right back in the game(quote from the tv.) was surprised it stayed fair.
   62. The Mexicoan George Jefferson(Sheriff Blalock) Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:21 PM (#1680461)
Really, when you look at the Cards lineup, it can be amazing they score that many runs. You hear a lot (with good reason) about Lee's poor lineup, but Pujols had a whole (####!!) lot of ab's with some real scrubeenies around him too.
   63. stubbyc Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:23 PM (#1680465)
WTF? Burke upper deck HR?

This Nissan commercial is unbearable
   64. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:27 PM (#1680478)
but many of the scrubeenies had relatively good seasons, and almost all of them was streaky at different points in time.

September, Eckstein, j-rod, edmonds and j-rod posted over .850 ops.
august Eck, Taguchi, edmonds and grudz showed up.
july nunez, walker, mabry, and j-rod,
june reggie, edmonds, nunez, walker

anyway, it boils down that our team had streaky players who's streaks weren't all at the same time, which helped keep the teams consistency (I know sounds funny streakiness helps keep consistency)
   65. Urban Faber Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:27 PM (#1680479)
Chris Carpenter has a career postseason ERA of 0.00. This makes him the best postseason pitcher of all time.

He's no John Rocker (20.2 IP, no ER).
   66. Urban Faber Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:28 PM (#1680481)
Forgot the italics on Sparkles' statement.
   67. The Mexicoan George Jefferson(Sheriff Blalock) Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:30 PM (#1680484)
That they did, cardsfanboy, but the names aren't too impressive.
   68. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:33 PM (#1680491)
true the names suck, but their performance didn't. It's why I think it's a joke when Braves fans try to say that Andruw carried that team, when they had some good, to very good performances from their 'rookies'. and their real argument is that 'he deserves it because he was our only healthy player all year long, even though he is about 8th best player'
   69. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:35 PM (#1680498)
Oh, yeah... let Carpenter bat. Great idea.
   70. Sparkles Peterson Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:36 PM (#1680499)
Actually, John Rocker was an incredible pitcher in his time and did seem at his best in the postseason. I wish he'd been able to keep his stupid opinions (No doubt shared by a significant percentage of MLB players) to himself.
   71. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:43 PM (#1680516)
I don't mind the Rocker stupid opinions, after all how many yankee fans or red sox fans has referred to cardinal fans as hicks and other stuff. it was basically stereotyping

the bigger problem was he wasn't able to overcome the off field stuff and get on with his life.
   72. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:57 PM (#1680541)
Ausmus with at least a two-run single here. How long has it been since Isringhausen had an easy "save?"
   73. Sparkles Peterson Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:58 PM (#1680548)
Vaux is like 0 for 35 this postseason. It really put's A-Rod's numbers in perspective.
   74. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 10:59 PM (#1680555)
Vaux is the Cardinals MVP, I worry about every game until I see him post.
   75. stubbyc Posted: October 12, 2005 at 11:05 PM (#1680594)
How about those shoetop strike calls for Isringhausen in the 9th? Wow.
   76. Sparkles Peterson Posted: October 12, 2005 at 11:08 PM (#1680606)
You mean the ones in the exact same zone as all the other low pitches called strikes for every pitcher all night? Wow.

The ump had a consistent strike zone.
   77. cardsfanboy Posted: October 12, 2005 at 11:20 PM (#1680655)
I was thinking the same thing, in the first inning Carpenter was getting those low strikes and I'm thinking this is going to be a pretty good game for Carpenter(then for some reason he kept raising the ball)
   78. gfoxcook Posted: October 22, 2005 at 03:26 AM (#1697688)
Burke became a short-term media darling with that 18-inning walk-off home run.... but it was this game that prolonged it a bit longer. And probably also got Garner to start Burke in all three of the Houston games (3-4-5)... which worked out okay in the end, but I was personally a much bigger fan of how it worked in the 9th innings (Berkman out of LF to 1B instead, thank god... Burke over to LF, Taveras FINALLY in CF, and Bruntlett at 2B (though Biggio still being there would have been nice, too)).

What a series.... didn't start wonderfully for the Astros, but certainly didn't start as awfully as the 2004 NLCS did for them.
