This has the potential to be a really really good day.
   2. Sam M. Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:57 AM (#2201945)
Sure does, Tom. But you know what? Did you see that ex-Brave future HOFer with pinpoint control turn back the clock the other night and pitch a masterpiece?

There's another one, and he's even better, and he pitches for the bad guys.

Win or lose, I fully expect a tough, well-pitched game from Maddux tonight. That SOB is not going to let Glavine have the last word without a response. You watch.
   3. Joshemy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 11:02 AM (#2201980)
I agree with Sam. Maddux shows up tonight.

But know what else? I think Trachsel shows up.

And I'm glad for him. He's been a solid trooper for this team throughout the last couple of bad years. This year has been a struggle, but it is nice to see him to finally get a chance to pitch in a playoff game.
   4. HowardMegdal Posted: October 07, 2006 at 11:30 AM (#2201999)
I've been very concerned that the MEts have a Game 3 starter with more walks than strikeouts. But good news! I just checked, and Trachsel has one more K than BB! Can somebody say, first no-hitter in Mets history?

Trachsel seems to pitch well in big spots (see Cubs play-in game, clincher this year), and he seems to have been hyped up to start a postseason game for more than a month now. I think we get into their bullpen and end this thing.

Still won't believe the Yankees are eliminated until the final out though. But this was the exact thing I was worried about happening to the Mets if they dropped one at home, and Trachsel lost- the season resting on Oliver Perez. Except the Yankees had no injuries, and it's happening with Jaret Wright. Not good. At least Perez's opponent would have been as up in the air- the Tigers have their number one going. Crazy stuff...

I know I could be jinxing them, but I say that Maddux doesn't make it out of the 5th inning tonight. Reyes and Beltran are ready to wreak some havoc.
   6. Bob Koo Posted: October 07, 2006 at 12:56 PM (#2202057)
Sigh, John Kruk picked the Mets tonight. Get ready for game 5, fellas.
   7. Bob Koo Posted: October 07, 2006 at 12:56 PM (#2202059)
Sigh, John Kruk picked the Mets tonight. We're doomed. Get ready for Game 4, fellas.
   8. Bob Koo Posted: October 07, 2006 at 12:57 PM (#2202061)
oops.
   9. Sam M. Posted: October 07, 2006 at 01:02 PM (#2202063)
I say that Maddux doesn't make it out of the 5th inning tonight. Reyes and Beltran are ready to wreak some havoc.

You know, Maddux could pitch brilliantly, AND not make it out of the 5th. He could work tough, give up a few hits, pitch around guys in key situations -- raising his pitch count as he does it -- but still hold the Mets down. And then in the 5th, Little is forced to lift him.

I could easily see it unfolding that way, if the Mets' hitters are smart and work the count effectively. Then the keys are whether Trachsel pitches well, and whether they break through against the LA bullpen.
   10. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: October 07, 2006 at 01:26 PM (#2202080)
Over/Under on Trachsel's innings tonight? I'd say 4.5.

It is important to finish series off as quickly as possible because the Mets are obviously going to ride the bullpen as far as it will take them and they need those guys to be fresh.

I don't like the idea of starting Maine on 3 days rest if it does go to game 4.
   11. Sam M. Posted: October 07, 2006 at 01:29 PM (#2202083)
I don't like the idea of starting Maine on 3 days rest if it does go to game 4.

I like the idea of starting Glavine on 3 days rest in Game 5 even less. To me, the combination of Perez/Maine (each on full rest) is much, much better than the combination of Maine/Glavine, each on short rest. Glavine's history on short rest is terrible.
   12. Bob Koo Posted: October 07, 2006 at 02:01 PM (#2202109)
FYI, the first pitch is at 8:05 pm. The "7:35" is one of those pre-game hoaxes.
   13. John DiFool2 Posted: October 07, 2006 at 04:59 PM (#2202370)
Could this be Maddux's last start ever? Does he have enough to come back next year?
   14. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: October 07, 2006 at 05:04 PM (#2202385)
Maddux is pretty much a lock to come back next season. He did win 15 games with an ERA of 4.20 so he has more than enough to come back.
   15. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: October 07, 2006 at 05:09 PM (#2202402)
And if Clemens actually retires Maddux needs 16 wins to pass him on the all time list, that could be extra incentive for him to come back.
   16. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: October 07, 2006 at 05:29 PM (#2202479)
Let's. Go. Mets.
   17. Sam M. Posted: October 07, 2006 at 05:31 PM (#2202487)
OK, boys. I won't be chatting tonight -- out of internet contact for this one. Take it home for me, and create an interesting read for me when I get in, will ya? Hopefully, the next time we all get together for a Mets' chatter after tonight will be for Game 1 of the NLCS!!!

Go Trax -- and all your band of Merry Mets!!!
   18. Chris Dial Posted: October 07, 2006 at 06:37 PM (#2202718)
Okay boys, I won't be chatting tonight -- out of internet contact for this one, take it home for me, and create an interesting read for Sam when he gets in, will ya? Hopefully, the next time we all get together for a Mets' chatter after tonight will be for Game 1 of the NLCS!!!

Unlike Sam, I will be *at* the game! WOOOOO!!!!

I'll post a photo of Red in her Carlos Delgado shirt at Dodger Stadium!!!

SHAWN GREEN IS STARTING ARRGGHH.

I'll be out drinking and eventually celebrating.
   20. Robert S. Posted: October 07, 2006 at 07:04 PM (#2202795)
Shawn Green's clearly due. It's been a few years since he resembled a useful ballplayer.

Dodgers win: another game for me to watch.
Mets win: dagger for Yankees.

I like this.

*holds nose*

Go Dodgers!
   22. Banta Posted: October 07, 2006 at 07:31 PM (#2202893)
Alright guys. Now with the Yankees losing, a win tonight would go a long way towards taking back New York. I feel it happening.

Shawn Green's clearly due. It's been a few years since he resembled a useful ballplayer.

Three terrific seasons and a whole lot of mediocrity. Do you think his HOF chances are about over? ;-)

As for the game, I'll say the odds are 50/50 that the Mets win tonight.
   26. Joshemy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 07:57 PM (#2202948)
Shawn Green? You have to be ####### kidding me.

Let's Go! Mets go!
   27. Robert S. Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:01 PM (#2202955)
Holy ####, Brennaman and McCarver.
   28. Banta Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:01 PM (#2202956)
I'm just happy Endy started one game.

Where's Joe Buck? I suppose he's too busy with the T.O. game tomorrow to be bothered with baseball playoffs.
   29. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:03 PM (#2202958)
Green starting is bad enough, but why does he have to bat ahead of Stache?
   30. Banta Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:03 PM (#2202959)
More good news, my Mets cap is slowly stretching itself back out. I never wear hats, so I can't even remember the last time I wore this. Possibly the 2000 playoffs. During game one, it was pretty much stopping all circulation to my brain. Considering how nervewracking that game was, I'm pretty surprised I didn't suffer a stroke.
   31. Banta Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:07 PM (#2202967)
Nice, a Blowduca walk. Doesn't happen enough.
   32. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:08 PM (#2202971)
Rats.

Heart and soul!

Damn you Blow Duca, you fat bastard.
   35. Banta Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:09 PM (#2202974)
Ah nuts, Blowduca. Gain a little speed, will ya?!
   36. Joshemy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:09 PM (#2202975)
Ugh LoDuca. You are not fast. Bad decision.
   37. John (You Can Call Me Grandma) Murphy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:09 PM (#2202976)
Lo Duca.
   38. Joshemy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:10 PM (#2202979)
Yay Carlos #2!

Let's go D-Wright!
   39. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:10 PM (#2202980)
Nice. Come on, Wright!
   40. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:10 PM (#2202981)
Paul LoDuca does a lot of dumb things, it seems.
   41. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:11 PM (#2202982)
The Carloses are good.

Let's go David.
   42. John (You Can Call Me Grandma) Murphy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:11 PM (#2202983)
Ugh LoDuca. You are not fast. Bad decision.

Lo Duca runs like a toddler with a load in his diaper.

D-Wright!!!

Mets on the board despite the baserunning mistake.

DAVIDNITY! Very nice!

Wright!

He's got the Wright stuff, baby!
   49. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:13 PM (#2202993)
The Mets have too many smart and good hitters to be mystified by Maddux's combination of excellent pitching intelligence and subpar stuff, right?
   50. Fred Garvin, Male Prostitute Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:13 PM (#2202994)
I wish I had the SAP button to avoid Brennaman/McCarver.
   51. Joshemy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:13 PM (#2202995)
Cliffy! He's not dead yet!
   52. Rob Base Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:13 PM (#2202996)
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
   53. Urban Faber Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:13 PM (#2202999)
Would a real left-fielder have caught that one?
   54. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:13 PM (#2202997)
AWESOME. How the heck did Marlon not catch that?
   55. Alan S Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:13 PM (#2203000)
CLIFFORD!
   56. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:13 PM (#2203004)
Marlon Anderson has no business being in a major league outfield.
   57. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:13 PM (#2203003)
Cliffy!
   58. Banta Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:13 PM (#2203001)
Cliff! This is great. There's no one I want to have a better postseason.
   59. Joshemy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:14 PM (#2203006)
Shawn Green up with 2 outs. Well, 2 runs is a nice first inning.
   60. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:15 PM (#2203008)
Even Green gets a hit!
   61. Urban Faber Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:15 PM (#2203009)
Even Green getting in the act.

Looks like only one game tomorrow.
   62. Banta Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:15 PM (#2203010)
There's some Shawn Green magic. Knew it had to happen eventually.
   63. Joshemy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:15 PM (#2203011)
Even Shawn's pathetic swings work!
   64. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:15 PM (#2203012)
Even Green comes through! MAZEL TOV!!!
   65. John (You Can Call Me Grandma) Murphy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:17 PM (#2203015)
Let's get Metsmerized!
   66. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:17 PM (#2203017)
Fantastic start. Come on, Trax!
   67. Srul Itza Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:18 PM (#2203018)
That could have been a far more amazing inning if Blow Duca had not been so stupid.

Still, I'll take it to start. More evidence that Trachsel was fated this year to get more run support than he deserves.
   68. Joshemy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:19 PM (#2203019)
Let's go Trachsel! No handing back of these runs!
   69. kevin Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:20 PM (#2203020)
So far, so good for the Mets.
   70. Srul Itza Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:20 PM (#2203021)
Win or lose, I fully expect a tough, well-pitched game from Maddux tonight.

Still feel that way?
   71. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:23 PM (#2203024)
SIT, Furcal!
   72. Joshemy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:23 PM (#2203026)
K to start!
   73. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:23 PM (#2203027)
So the Dodgers have won one playoff game in the past 18 years?

And they've been to the playoffs 3 times since then. Wow, that's really a draught for what should be a flagship franchise.
   74. Kolmo Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:23 PM (#2203028)
Marlon Anderson hitting third? What is this? Spring training?
   75. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:24 PM (#2203029)
Lofton has been terrible.
   76. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:24 PM (#2203030)
It's really hard to take the Dodgers seriously when Marlon Anderson is hitting third. Grady Little...
   77. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:25 PM (#2203031)
No, Thom, that's not all Marlon Anderson has done. He's also played shitty defense on both outfield corners.
   78. Banta Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:25 PM (#2203032)
You guys have to stop reverse jinxing Marlon Anderson into getting hits.
   79. John (You Can Call Me Grandma) Murphy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:26 PM (#2203033)
Kent is the greatest slugging second baseman in baseball history?!!
   80. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:26 PM (#2203035)
Oh, David... yikes.
   81. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:26 PM (#2203036)
Dammit Wright.
   82. Banta Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:27 PM (#2203038)
I saw that Wright error coming all the way. He does this stupid #### all the time.
   83. Joshemy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:27 PM (#2203039)
Oh David, why must you do that?
   84. Rob Base Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:28 PM (#2203041)
Nice.
   85. Banta Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:28 PM (#2203042)
Nicely done, Trachsel, bailing Wright out.
   86. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:28 PM (#2203043)
Way to stay tough, Trax.
   87. Joshemy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:28 PM (#2203044)
No harm done. Good job Trax.

Ballgame.

Mets survive the error.
   91. Raskolnikov Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:31 PM (#2203049)
Great start for the Mets, let's bury them early. I like our chances of scoring a bushel of runs tonight.
   92. dng Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:32 PM (#2203051)
You dick Brennemen, picking on the blind. lol.
   93. Fred Garvin, Male Prostitute Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:32 PM (#2203052)
Could someone at Fox think of maybe -- just possibly -- mentioning the name Rogers Hornsby to Brennamen?

Kent Career SLG: .504
Hornsby Career SLG: .577

Kent is only better than Hornsby in one category -- home runs.

Hornsby has more runs, hits, more doubles, more triples, more RBI, more stolen bases, more walks, fewer strikeouts, a better average, a better on-base percentage, and more total bases.
   94. Banta Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:32 PM (#2203053)
That's pretty classy by Brennaman to acknowledge a mistake like that. Although, it was probably demanded of him.
   95. John (You Can Call Me Grandma) Murphy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:33 PM (#2203055)
Yes!
   96. Joshemy Posted: October 07, 2006 at 08:33 PM (#2203056)
