NY Mets 24-14 at St. Louis 24-15 - 8:10pm ET

NYM: S. Trachsel (2-3, 4.91) vs. STL: M. Mulder (4-1, 4.27)

The Cardinals go for revenge tonight.  If Trachsel throws Pujols a strike, expect it to travel a reasonable distance.

Some scouts believe that Mets Double-A outfielder Carlos Gomez has even more upside than Triple-A outfielder Lastings Milledge, the team's top prospect. Gomez, however, is not close enough to the majors to make the Mets comfortable about trading Milledge. Playing in Double-A at age 20, he's struggling with a .582 on-base/slugging percentage.

Trading Milledge because of a tools goof would be just like the Mets.

The Mets have agreed informally to decline the option if Glavine wants to return to the Braves next season, according to a source with knowledge of his contract.

If that's true, that's ridiculous. The Mets front office does remember that Atlanta is in the same division, right?
   4. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 05:37 PM (#2024664)
So Glavine's basically gone. Brillant!

I'm guessing that's not the Carlos Gomez who posts here.

Gammo just #### all over Pelfrey on Baseball tonight saying he is nowhere near ready because he hasn't developed secondary pitches.
   7. Russlan roots for the mediocre Mets Posted: May 17, 2006 at 07:53 PM (#2024841)
Gammons hasn't been relevant in years.
   8. Russlan roots for the mediocre Mets Posted: May 17, 2006 at 07:55 PM (#2024844)
That said, I don't expect Pelfrey to make it to Shea this season.

As for a pitcher who may be more ML ready -- Willie Collazo with another fine outing in AA today -- 7 IP, 1R, 4H, 2BB, 4K
   10. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 08:05 PM (#2024862)
Ooo, Dan Schulman and Orel doing the game on ESPN. Duke Castiglione too!
   11. Russlan roots for the mediocre Mets Posted: May 17, 2006 at 08:11 PM (#2024878)
Collazo's pitching well this season but he's been crappy for years. He'll likely fall back to Earth. Soler will get to the Mets before him.

Beltran has a 1000 OPS and Buck thinks it's a so-so season.

Er, had a 1000 OPS.
   14. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 08:16 PM (#2024891)
Bad Beltran, bad.
   15. Kiner's Rounded Edge Posted: May 17, 2006 at 08:16 PM (#2024893)
I wouldn't say Collazo's been crappy for years -- he was awful last year and not great the year before -- but from 2001 to 2003 he was actually pretty good. I'm not saying he's a top prospect -- but he's at least intriguing.

Mulder and Molina seem too preoccupied with Wright.

   22. Russlan roots for the mediocre Mets Posted: May 17, 2006 at 08:53 PM (#2024943)
How do you walk Aaron Miles?
   23. Russlan roots for the mediocre Mets Posted: May 17, 2006 at 08:56 PM (#2024950)
MLB.tv Audio is messed up now. The service this year has been much worse.
   24. greenback06 Posted: May 17, 2006 at 08:59 PM (#2024957)
How do you walk Aaron Miles?

Miles evidently has made some change (taking more pitches) that the scouting report hasn't caught yet.

The service this year has been much worse.

Yes. They're obviously experimenting and it's not pleasant. I have the GameDay Audio too, but it's at least a pitch behind.
   25. Banta Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:02 PM (#2024960)
That was a Trachselian-paced inning.
   26. Banta Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:07 PM (#2024975)
...so, anybody done any good steroids lately?
   27. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:17 PM (#2024993)
Damn, this place is dead. I blame Trachsel's pace.
   28. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:19 PM (#2024995)
Petit is in the game for the Marlins in relief.

In his first inning he struck out Andruw Jones, Brian McCann and Jeff Francoeur on 11 pitches.

Yeah.
   29. Banta Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:19 PM (#2024997)
I think this is the calm before the storm (Lima time).
   30. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:22 PM (#2025008)
So in two major league innings, Petit has struck out five and given up one hit.

Not a bad start. He'll crack the Fish rotation by the time the Mets play them next.
   31. Banta Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:23 PM (#2025013)
Come on, Kaz!
   32. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:25 PM (#2025017)
You suck Kaz Matsui.
   33. Banta Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:25 PM (#2025019)
I think Kaz going from laughably bad to just ordinary bad is gonna hurt the Mets in the long run.
   34. greenback06 Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:25 PM (#2025022)
One gets the impression that Matsui isn't very good.
   35. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:26 PM (#2025025)
What Banta, you think they'll re-sign him after the year is over?

No way Jose.
   36. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:27 PM (#2025034)
Come on, at least one of those was not a strike.
   37. Banta Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:30 PM (#2025048)
What Banta, you think they'll re-sign him after the year is over?

By the long run, I meant the rest of this season. I'd really rather have Anderson Hernandez playing second (eventually, give him a month at AAA). You can't figure that he's gonna put up a 350 OPS for the whole season. And Kaz is just dead weight. His offense doesn't justify his defense, which IS improved this year, but I think it's improved from horrible to below-average.

Of course, neither are really good options, but I'm always more interested in seeing youth over gimmicks. Kaz is garbage and at this point, you can't realistically say he's gonna get better.
   38. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:31 PM (#2025054)
Petit gets LaRoche, Langerhans and Smoltz out on nine pitches.
   39. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:33 PM (#2025062)
Right now, I would totally prefer Kaz to Hernandez. The offensive advantages of Kaz far outweigh Hernandez's defensive abilities. Plus, Kaz hasn't been that bad at 2B.
   40. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:34 PM (#2025070)
Cliff Floyd limping? LASTINGS MILLEDGE!
   41. Rob Base Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:36 PM (#2025074)
Cliff Floyd limping? LASTINGS MILLEDGE!

Are we playing anagrams?
   42. Banta Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:42 PM (#2025085)
Plus, Kaz hasn't been that bad at 2B.

I think that's hard to evaluate, really. He still doesn't have any range, which could be because he gets a bad break of the ball off the bat. I really wonder if the rumors of his poor eyesight aren't justified. It would explain a lot of his game, offensively and defensively.

And for all of Kaz's offensive advantages, his OPS this season is 624, with an OBP of 283. His career OPS is 693. While I'm not saying that combined with his defense doesn't outweigh what Anderson Hernandez might bring to the table, I AM curious what Anderson would have to hit to make them even. Someone should do some research on that.
   43. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:45 PM (#2025090)
I'm watching the end of the Cavs-Pistons game, but it looks like the Mets are still sucking.

This team doesn't like facing lefties, does it?
   44. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:46 PM (#2025093)
Petit gets McCann to pop out with two men on. His final line:

3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
   45. Chris Dial Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:47 PM (#2025094)
Edmonds is hitting .333 in an AB following a Pujols walk.

Okay, something less than that now.
   46. Banta Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:48 PM (#2025095)
My last post was directed at you blogger-types. Come on, there's an idea for an article right there. You predict how much Anderson Hernandez would have to hit to be as valuable as Kaz Matsui, when you factor in both of their defenses. IT'S GOLD
   47. Chris Dial Posted: May 17, 2006 at 09:49 PM (#2025098)
Someone should do some research on that.

I gave you the tools to do that yourself.

These announcers are terrible.

Mets announcers don't say things like "Pujols can smell a run."

Chris, turn on ESPN. It's Schulman and Hershiser.

Phillies losing...Marlins just went ahead of the Braves. Petit is the pitcher of record now thanks to a Mike Jacobs 2 RBI single.
   64. Banta Posted: May 17, 2006 at 10:00 PM (#2025138)
I'm still not gonna do this research. I thought tasks like these were the reason why there were MetGeeks and the like running around.
   65. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 10:00 PM (#2025139)
Oh, and Petit threw 32 pitches, 24 for strikes.
   66. Banta Posted: May 17, 2006 at 10:01 PM (#2025142)
Oh damn it, I forgot to record Lost.
   67. Chris Dial Posted: May 17, 2006 at 10:02 PM (#2025144)
There are a bunch. Like how to calculate your own defensive value and how to calculate the total value of a player (offense and defense).
   68. Joshemy Posted: May 17, 2006 at 10:02 PM (#2025145)
Just got in. Low scoring game, huh?

I'm still not gonna do this research. I thought tasks like these were the reason why there were MetGeeks and the like running around.

You need a real baseline for Hernandez' defense, and we don't have that.
   70. Craig K some obscure verb phrase Posted: May 17, 2006 at 10:03 PM (#2025147)
I'd rather a 1-0 game than a 14-13 game anyday, thank you very much.
   71. Banta Posted: May 17, 2006 at 10:04 PM (#2025148)
It seems like it would be somewhat difficult to figure out Anderson Hernandez's defensive value anyway, since:

A. He hasn't played much at the major league level
B. In the minors, he was a shortstop
   72. Chris Dial Posted: May 17, 2006 at 10:04 PM (#2025150)
Come on Trax, don't walk Mulder
   73. Craig K some obscure verb phrase Posted: May 17, 2006 at 10:05 PM (#2025151)
Who the hell told Mulder he could hit?
   74. AJM Posted: May 17, 2006 at 10:05 PM (#2025152)
Another hit by Mulder, ugh.
   75. Banta Posted: May 17, 2006 at 10:07 PM (#2025156)
Good effort from Trachsel.
   76. Chris Dial Posted: May 17, 2006 at 10:07 PM (#2025158)
Well, Trax pitched beautifully.
   77. Pagans in the Outfield (Matt) Posted: May 17, 2006 at 10:07 PM (#2025159)
For anyone who is watching ESPN: Hershiser stole eight career bases and was thrown out three times. He claims he stole between 6-10 and was never thrown out.

So he was close.
   78. Banta Posted: May 17, 2006 at 10:07 PM (#2025161)

He may never have been caught stealing when he tried to steal, but could have been caught on a botched H&R;, which stats-wise is a CS, but mentally wouldn't be.
