NY Yankees 23-16 at NY Mets 24-16 - 7:10pm ET

NYY: R. Johnson (5-4, 5.13) vs. NYM: J. Gonzalez (0-0, 5.40)

The Big Useless against the Junior Varsity.  While the thought of a crippled Randy Johnson having to bat scared me at first, I remember now that he will be knocked out of the game before his spot in the batting order comes up, so it’s no longer a concern.

Where's Mr. Koo when the Mets need him? That was a great moment.

Obviously the Mets will not win this game. They have no giant killer.

Where's Joe McEwing when we need him most?
   3. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: May 19, 2006 at 03:47 PM (#2027380)
Yankees put Bubba on the DL. They've called up career minor league slugger Mitch Jones.
   4. TVerik and his cavalcade of whimsy Posted: May 19, 2006 at 04:07 PM (#2027433)
Considering his age, I think Torre would hit Johnson fifth.

It's tought to be more "veteran" than RJ.
   5. TVerik and his cavalcade of whimsy Posted: May 19, 2006 at 04:09 PM (#2027437)
It's gotta suck to be Bubba Crosby. Baseball players don't think of themselves as spare parts; they all want to be regulars. In Bubba's only chances to be a regular, he's either gotten hurt or watched his team sign other players for his spot.

We can dispassionately discuss his "ceiling" (and we'd be right; I don't see Bubba ever getting 400 ABs in a season), but it just isn't like that in his head.
   6. 洋基's Biggest Fan! Posted: May 19, 2006 at 04:25 PM (#2027452)
Torre on the FAN reports Pavano needs to get bone chip removed above elbow. May or may not be out for the season depending on the type of surgery. But if a Pavano falls and you've never seen him pitch (or so it seems) does it really affect the team?
   7. Bob Koo Posted: May 19, 2006 at 04:29 PM (#2027457)
Valentin starting for Floyd tonight.
   8. TVerik and his cavalcade of whimsy Posted: May 19, 2006 at 04:31 PM (#2027460)
Early evidence (that I've seen and heard about) seems to indicate that Proctor's awakening seems to have something to do with no Mel in the dugout during games.
   9. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: May 19, 2006 at 04:39 PM (#2027476)
Valentin starting for Floyd tonight.

I hate my life.
   10. Cutter Posted: May 19, 2006 at 04:40 PM (#2027477)
If Randy doesn't outpitch Gonzalez tonight he should be horsewhipped in the clubhouse and then forced to retire and leave the country.
   11. Joshemy Posted: May 19, 2006 at 05:20 PM (#2027539)
Hopefully the rain stays away for this game.

I'd be more pissed about Valentin starting for Floyd, if Valentin wasn't an MVP caliber player.
   16. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: May 19, 2006 at 05:49 PM (#2027573)
Yeah, but why is Valentin batting behind Matsui? If you're going to play him, don't bury him.

Oh, and thanks SNY/YES for not picking up this game. No one outside of the New York area will be seeing it.
   17. Bob Koo Posted: May 19, 2006 at 05:54 PM (#2027574)
Why does Kaz Matsui hit anywhere other than 8th? He's awful. The Mets really have to look into upgrading at second base.
   18. Banta Posted: May 19, 2006 at 05:58 PM (#2027578)
Oh, and thanks SNY/YES for not picking up this game. No one outside of the New York area will be seeing it.

Not even us in fake NY! (Buffalo area)
   19. Banta Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:00 PM (#2027581)
No one did my study on Anderson Hernandez VS. Kaz Matsui, huh?

Alright, I'll make it even easier. Assume that Anderson is gonna be one of the top five defensive secondbaseman in baseball. Quite an assumption, but now you have something to go on. COME ON, METGEEKS, ASSEMBLE
   20. Cutter Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:05 PM (#2027585)
Hey, don't knock Buffalo. My girlfriend is from there.
   21. Chris Dial Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:07 PM (#2027586)

Jeremi Gonzalez sucks.
   24. AJM Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:14 PM (#2027591)
Woo, I got the game on the radio!
   25. Banta Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:14 PM (#2027592)
Well, this isn't predictable at all.
   26. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:14 PM (#2027593)
Paul Lo Duca sucks.
   27. Cutter Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:14 PM (#2027594)
Finally, Damon starts a game with an Xtra base hit.
   28. Bob Koo Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:14 PM (#2027595)
Maybe if Gonzalez gets whacked around, they'll finally put Heilman into the rotation. Maybe.
   29. AJM Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:15 PM (#2027596)
A steal against Lo Duca? I'm shocked.
   30. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:15 PM (#2027598)
Anybody who's anybody is watching Florida-Tampa Bay anyway, right? Right?
   31. Bob Koo Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:17 PM (#2027601)
Wow, I am absolutely shocked that Gonzalez is stinking up the joint so far.
   32. Russlan wants Pedro to be a Met again Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:17 PM (#2027602)
Bad start to the game for the Mets to say the least.
   33. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:17 PM (#2027603)
The excitement of the subway series is rapidly dissipating
   34. Banta Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:18 PM (#2027604)
Alright, one out!
   35. Cutter Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:18 PM (#2027605)
Even when Arod does well he manages to sometimes make it look bad.
   36. AJM Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:18 PM (#2027606)
This is going great so far.
   37. Bob Koo Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:18 PM (#2027607)
That play wasn't even close. The umpires have been a joke for most of the year.
   38. Moe Greene Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:18 PM (#2027608)
How long before Johnson gives up the lead?

I'm guessing bottom of the 2nd.
   39. eric Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:19 PM (#2027609)
wow Arod looked very safe there. I'm not sure Matsui even touched him, nevermind the fact that if the tag was applied Arod was probably there first.
   40. Russlan wants Pedro to be a Met again Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:19 PM (#2027610)
You guys are being overly harsh. What do you expect from the team's number 8 starter?
   41. Banta Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:19 PM (#2027611)
Two out!
   42. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:20 PM (#2027612)
that was a BS call on ARod!
big break for the Mets

the stupid part of the batting order comes up
   43. Cutter Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:20 PM (#2027613)
Wow Posada, after a monster homerun you'd think you would know how to hit it in the air and not right at an infield in fielder.

Cano, you are smoooooth.
   44. Bob Koo Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:21 PM (#2027614)
I thought batting practice for the road team ended an hour before game time.
   45. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:21 PM (#2027615)
Yick. The big fugly had better be as bad as advertised.
   46. Cutter Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:21 PM (#2027616)
No worries Mets fans. Bernie will end this rally.
   47. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:22 PM (#2027618)
Bring me Darren Oliver!!
   48. Bob Koo Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:22 PM (#2027619)
You've got to be kidding me. Game over, already.
   49. Banta Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:22 PM (#2027620)
At least I can't watch this.

Getting beat is one thing. But remember, the more Jeremi Gonzalez gets whacked around, the more likely the Mets will continue to observe Lima time.
   50. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:23 PM (#2027621)
All Yankee outfielders must be eradicated.
   51. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:23 PM (#2027622)
Bernie pulled his back swinging? god just take him to the back and put him down already
   52. AlouGoodbye Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:23 PM (#2027623)
Who is this Gonzalez clown?

"The last thing the Yankees need in the world is for Bernie Williams to be hurt."

Yeah, replacement-level outfielders are tough to find.
   53. eric Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:23 PM (#2027624)
Bernie, if you can't even jog to second base without getting injured, you're too old.
   54. Cutter Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:23 PM (#2027625)
Another 4 spot for Randy. Lets see how quick he blows this one.
   55. Bob Koo Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:23 PM (#2027627)
Over/under for Yankees runs scored tonight: 15.
   56. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:23 PM (#2027628)
This game is over, I don't care if Johnson isn't his normal self.

Phillies have the bases loaded with two outs against Clement.
   57. AJM Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:24 PM (#2027630)
At least Pedro and Glavine pitch the next two games.
   58. Joshemy Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:24 PM (#2027631)
Um, Jeremi Gonzalez, you suck.
   59. Banta Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:25 PM (#2027632)
I'm listening to the Yankee radio announcers... I can barely even understand what's going on.
   60. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:26 PM (#2027634)
I'm listening to the Yankee radio announcers...

There's your first mistake right there.
   61. eric Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:26 PM (#2027635)
Wow, Johnson batting is hilarious. Standing right next to the ump and catcher really underscores just how big he is. Has any pitcher ever managed to miss that strike zone?
   62. yl_adam Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:26 PM (#2027636)

That's ok, neither can they.
   63. In the Disney betting pool, Roy Oswalt Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:27 PM (#2027639)
I liked this call from Sterling: "Giambi goes to second and... ARod is out at second.... [Pause as he realizes this makes no sense.] Uh... I was watching Giambi go to third."
   64. Bob Koo Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:27 PM (#2027640)
There wasn't even a doubt about any of those hits. They were all frozen ropes.

At least the Mets now know Gonzalez can't be counted on, and we did go 1-1 in his two starts. And yes, I'm trying to spin it the best way I can.
   65. 5.00, .280/.320/.400, 4th outfielder Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:28 PM (#2027641)
The uniform is popping out during the warmups. Isn't that the sign that he's pitching well?
   66. Moe Greene Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:28 PM (#2027643)
Why does David Wright bat 5th every day? Seems like such a good on-base guy should hit 2nd or 3rd, but I'm no Mets expert.
   67. SJ and the pants of freedom. Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:29 PM (#2027644)
Hello New York Area ballfans. I wish I could be chattering with you this weekend. Sadly, I can not, my loss, not yours.

GO VARSITY!

Way to work it, Jose!
   70. Moe Greene Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:29 PM (#2027647)
I haven't seen Randy pitch in a long time... but that slider looks weak. Mr. Snappy has turned into a slurve.
   71. AJM Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:29 PM (#2027648)
Mets radio guy: "Johnson has been prone to fits of wildness that we haven't seen from him before". I guess he missed Johnson's career pre-1995.
   72. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:29 PM (#2027649)
Reyes lead off walk!

Welcome to the world of Willie Randolph.

   75. Cutter Posted: May 19, 2006 at 06:30 PM (#2027652)
OK, 'Bad Randy' has murdered 'Cy Young Randy'. Even up 4-0, I can tell you he will blow this.
