NY Yankees 23-16 at NY Mets 24-16 - 7:10pm ET

NYY: R. Johnson (5-4, 5.13) vs. NYM: J. Gonzalez (0-0, 5.40)

The Big Useless against the Junior Varsity.  While the thought of a crippled Randy Johnson having to bat scared me at first, I remember now that he will be knocked out of the game before his spot in the batting order comes up, so it’s no longer a concern.

Excellent reverse stuff there, TA and teddy. Worked like a charm.

We will see this hit when he gets enshrined in Cooperstown.

That's a great shot of Wright down the 1st base line.

Off to make another bet...

For all the crying about Gonzalez and Lima, they are 2-3 in their starts. That's really not that bad all things considered.

Symbolic moment - Wright winning the game off of Rivera.

Damon looked awful on that. He was noticably limping going back on it.

I can't believe Sam M wasn't here to watch this one.

Clutchest hit by Wright in his career? Gotta be, no?

At least we know who teh Junior Varsity is.

You're right, kevin, Damon looked horrible. The ball carried further than I thought it would have but Damon should still have got it. Still, a Yankees loss is a thing to celebrate, no matter how it happens.

They? Hmm..no. The offense and the bullpen have managed to win 2 out of the five games they have started.

I JUST walked back into my hotel room. How long ago did Wright do it? I can't believe I missed it. But hell -- if it happened, that's the important thing.

Wright got a GW, walk-off, two-out, hit off Rivera.

Good lord, I think I just spent myself. And I'm hoping to get lucky tonight. Damn.

   533. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: May 19, 2006 at 10:36 PM (#2028350)
The whole BP was pretty sweet. 6 scoreless innings after Oliver allowed an inherited runner to score.
   534. Sam M. Posted: May 19, 2006 at 10:38 PM (#2028352)
Well, it looks like Mr. Gonzalez was worse than inept. Worse, even, than Lima-ept. And Oliver got off to a shaky start but somehow soldiered through before handing it off to the real pitchers.

And the Mets played longball on the Randy "Even Matsui Dialed Long Distance Once to Unit His Sorry Ass When He Could Actually Pitch" Johnson. I'm sure if I read through the chatter the Yankee fans were DELIGHTED with that performance, up to and including Matsui tying the game back up (once again) in the 5th. Unreal.

Basically, it looks like Wright was in the middle of every rally except the first inning. That's my prodigy!
   535. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 19, 2006 at 10:39 PM (#2028353)
Lounge-type review for Sam:

1. Mets get down four in the first.
2. Reyes walks to lead off the first. Beltran homers after a LoDuca hit to get us back in the game.
3. Gonzalez keeps sucking. Mets fall down 2.
4. XXX hits a 2 run bomb after a Wright two-out hit.
5. Randolph ##### up. Yankees score again.
6. Matsui gets a hit. Somehow. It scores Wright again. Tied game.
7. Aaron (forgetting) Heilman.
8. Reyes CS
9. Wagner strikes out the side.
10. Dookie with another clutch hit.
11. Wright's watermark moment.
   536. kevin Posted: May 19, 2006 at 10:39 PM (#2028354)

So here's the real question. An extremely hot young (babe -- I'll put in terms you guys will appreciate) comes on to you. Unmistakeable -- "she" wants you. However, it is also quite clear "she" is very, very drunk. This is at your hotel -- all you have to do is take "her" up to your room. This happened last night.

Without telling you what I did, what should I have done?

Nah. You're not a dumbass. That's what I did, too. I'm hoping he won't be quite so drunk later tonight, and that he'll still be equally interested when he's more sober. If I close my eyes, I might even be able to imagine he looks a bit like David Wright.

Sam M, I would take her up stairs and put her to sleep. Sleeping with drunk women is about as painfull as watching Matt Clement pitch
   549. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 19, 2006 at 10:50 PM (#2028370)
It depends.

1. Is "she" a total stranger? Or do you know "her"/going to see "her" again?

2. Is "she" a sensitive person (someone who might be affected by a one-night stand) or "she" a total slut?

If "she's" a total stranger and slutty, I would have done "her." If not, probably not.

This is a good point. The best way to learn is to do.

But either way, no regrets. Unless it really was David Wright. In which case, COME ON. A good percentage the Met fans in here would sleep with him, even if he was drunk, high, and hadn't slept in three weeks.

YOU CAN LIE ALL YOU WANT FELLOW MET FANS, BUT I KNOW IT'S TRUE

LIMA DFA-ED!!!!!!!!!!!

Ya-hoo!!!!! That'll certainly put the "+" in the "A" day for the Mets. The question, of course, is what's next. We know for sure it's not Bannister. I wonder if it might be that having Heilman go three innings tonight was the first step in stretching him out??? And bring someone up to move into the bullpen? Just thinking out load here.

Possible, but Heilman had only thrown 18 pitches threw the first two innings and his spot didn't come up. I'd say that factored into him staying in the game more than him being stretched out.

Unless it really was David Wright. In which case, COME ON. A good percentage the Met fans in here would sleep with him, even if he was drunk, high, and hadn't slept in three weeks.

The real question, though, would be what David Wright was doing -- on the eve of the Yankee-Met series, in particular, but really at all -- at an all-male, clothing optional, resort hotel in Fort Lauderdale.

Not that I'd be objecting, mind you. But it would be one hell of a question!

I don't get it. The term dirty deed implies some type of morality within the choice, which is not apparent to me at all.

He didn't suck. Much of that bloated ERA came towards the back end of the season when he got hurt and also mysteriously disappeared for a while. And his role kept being see-sawed during the year.

The term dirty deed implies some type of morality within the choice, which is not apparent to me at all.

There is a moral dimension to me. The voluntariness of his actions in coming on to me was questionable (induced by outside influence). Granted, he had voluntarily gotten drunk earlier, but that didn't make the subsequent decision independently voluntary. It just explained it. I don't want to take advantage of actions another person is taking -- even if I wasn't the agent who induced them -- that aren't of his own genuine free will.

I ain't that hard up. Close, but not quite.

Perhaps the inebriated allowed for expression of internal desires. Hey, drunken sex can be very erotic and enjoyable.

Of course, the details can bring up a moral dimension. But that's assuming that such an act is against the other person's true will. If so, then yes, I think it's not a good idea to sleep with him. But emotion, desire, and attraction are transient states, and it's not always the best idea to assume you know what the other person is thinking.

Definitely, but can't that be reversed? If you don't know for certain that the person is acting out of their own true will, then maybe it is better to not to sleep with them.

But to each their own. Unless you're famous. Then you never sleep with anyone unless you can vanish them afterwards. That's what pop-culture has taught me.

True. But I didn't have to assume anything. In fact, I know pretty definitively what he was thinking. There was ample clarity on that point. What I didn't know was the genuine source of those thoughts. And I avoided an assumption about that -- I avoided assuming they were the same thoughts he would have had sober. By remaining agnostic on that question, I think I respected both of us better than I would have had I assumed anything.

It sounded to me like Sam's case was a choice of aquiescing to carnal desires, not the development of a mature relationship. Fulfilling carnal desires are important and healthy on occasion, IMHO. Even some of the great intellectuals and great leaders were carnal at times underneath the public scope.

That's sort of the aspect which interests me. I don't profess to know this absolutely, but I think it's always hard to tell what the other's "genuine" motivations are. But there's nothing wrong with deciding not to sleep with him, so I see your point.

According to Fox Sports, Anderson Garcia will replace Lima.
   584. J. Cross Posted: May 20, 2006 at 12:37 AM (#2028507)
Excellent! No more Lima time!

Anderson Garcia: 31.1 IP (AA/AAA), 24 K, 8 BB, 1 HR, 26 H, 1.44 ERA.

It was too soon to call Bell back up, ofcourse, and Fortunato is injured. Henry Owens has a minor injury now as well. So, I guess the Mets have to go pretty deep to get the extra reliever for a few days.

So, who's the starter (my odds):

a) Evan MacLane (15%)

Come one, it's Willie Randolph. Aaron Heilman (0%). But thank all that's holy, Jose Lima (0%) as well!

Do we really need an 8th bullpen arm? I would've preferred giving someone like Keppinger a call-up for a few days.

Bell has gotten a fair shot with the Mets. He pitched 50 innings last year and sucked.

Giving up on a reliever because of one bad year is utterly stupid. Especially when he was good in his initial (albeit abbreviated) debut.

Anderson Garcia eh? The last remaining prospect from the Benitez trade.

I KNEW I'd seen his name somewhere before.

I agree with J. Cross in thinking that Oliver has the edge here. Which before Lima time would have pissed me off. Now it doesn't bother me. I've seen hell. Bring it on, Oliver.

career ERA+

Oliver: 93
Lima: 85

So, Lima has been twice as far below average over his career. Oliver's HR rate this year (and in 2004, the last year he pitched) is frightening. I think he's better than Lima but I still don't think he's a good option. Maclane is also a bit better than Lima but doens't look like he's ready. Really, Heilman's the only guy on that list who the Mets could reasonably expect to pitch WELL. That's why he gets the 25%.
