Sorry Chris, but the last time El Duque was trying to handcuff the JV was this game (and damned if he didn't do just that!). A Yankee win tonight would drop the alledged "best team" in the National League to just 5-8 aganist a real league. Bet they can't wait to be back to playing the NL East.

Why is it that Yankee fans must always resort to ancient history?
   3. CHRIS CARTER IS FREE!(Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 30, 2006 at 02:41 PM (#2082500)
And not for nothin', 5-8 would still be the 3rd best NL record in inter-League competiton.

Look, all I'm going to say is this: When Mike Lupica is one of your top boosters, things are bound to go horribly wrong at some point. Blame Karma.
   5. bebop Posted: June 30, 2006 at 03:24 PM (#2082557)
How about bringing up Durazo and DFAing Reese (why do the Yankees need two poor hitting outfielders) and then playing Durazo against some righthanders.
   6. Sean McNally Posted: June 30, 2006 at 03:26 PM (#2082559)
I hope El Duque doesn't handcuff the JV... I mean, I hope he pitches well and the JV's closer Fuaxirano "Sandbagged" Wagner comes in and gags up the lead. Again.

Well, as I understand it, Durazo is even more of a trainwreck at first base than Giambi. I'm not sure the offensive upgrade to him from Phillips to worth the defensive downgrade and increased injury chance to Giambi

Oh Oh Oh I get it now.

The Yankees are the varsity.

Kinda like the Duke lacrosse team.

I see...
   9. bebop Posted: June 30, 2006 at 04:30 PM (#2082633)
Durazo would dh sometimes against difficut righties like El Duque who's much tougher on righties as well as pinch hitting for Cairo in a late inning. He has a lifetime ops+ of 125 so I'd roll the dice a little and see what he has.
   10. Raskolnikov Posted: June 30, 2006 at 04:33 PM (#2082636)
Interesting matchup of two irresistible negative forces - the non Mets ace starters vs. the walking wounded Yankee lineup. Neither unit scares anyone. I'm curious to see which will prevail.

Has Floyd been called back up for this series - it would make a lot of sense for him to play this weekend.
   11. Sean McNally Posted: June 30, 2006 at 04:40 PM (#2082646)

As they always have been...

Anyone catch the Argentina-Germany game? I'm sure OFF is none too happy about it. Messi not playing at all and Riquelme getting subbed with about 20 minutes to go? Crespo, Saviola, Messi, and Riquelme on the bench by the end of the game? Ouch.

Turns out that Jeter was responsible for A-Rod's. According to Rodriguez himself on the FAN, when he picked up the bat while Jeter was batting, it felt lighter in his hands.
   14. NJ in DC (Now searching for employment!) Posted: June 30, 2006 at 05:42 PM (#2082719)
I think it's funny that A-Rod has a Spanish accent, but as far as I know, doesn't REALLY speak Spanish.
   15. PJ Martinez Posted: June 30, 2006 at 05:52 PM (#2082724)
I don't think A-Rod has a Spanish accent.
   16. RB in NYC (Now with Time-Consuming New Job!) Posted: June 30, 2006 at 05:55 PM (#2082727)
I thought A-Rod did speak Spanish, wasn't he translating for Cabrera or Cano at some point during his interviews? Or am I straight out of my mind?
   17. NJ in DC (Now searching for employment!) Posted: June 30, 2006 at 06:00 PM (#2082729)
IIRC, RB, that's entirely possible because he supposedly he can speak Spanish to an extent, but isn't fluent.
   18. rLr Is King Of The Romans And Above Grammar Posted: June 30, 2006 at 06:04 PM (#2082733)
I don't think A-Rod has a Spanish accent.

I assumed that was a Miami accent.

he can speak Spanish to an extent, but isn't fluent.

Listening to him on the "Use your SAP button to watch YES in Spanish" ad, he doesn't sound as comfortable as bona fide native speakers like Bernie and Posada.

Is that some sort of gay joke?
Listening to him on the "Use your SAP button to watch YES in Spanish" ad, he doesn't sound as comfortable as bona fide native speakers like Bernie and Posada.
But how does he compare to Hideki "The Magic of Fo-net-icks!" Matsui?

Oh, since this figures to be the NYC Chatter, what do we think of doing a meet-up next week, Wednesday or Thursday night? A game is probably out, but we could meet at a sports bar (that Tonic place was nice) and watch the different games. Mets and Yankees are both 7:00 starts those nights
   21. rLr Is King Of The Romans And Above Grammar Posted: June 30, 2006 at 06:22 PM (#2082743)
Oh, since this figures to be the NYC Chatter, what do we think of doing a meet-up next week, Wednesday or Thursday night?

I am on the schedule at work both those days. However, Wednesday is the WC semifinal, so I might feel a case of food-poisoning coming on.
   22. RB in NYC (Now with Time-Consuming New Job!) Posted: June 30, 2006 at 06:27 PM (#2082745)
I have a job interview at the DA's office at 3:30 on Wednesday, but I'm free after that, so I could probably be around to watch the back half of what I assume will be an England/Brazil semi.

Fabian? Anyone else?
   23. rLr Is King Of The Romans And Above Grammar Posted: June 30, 2006 at 06:36 PM (#2082750)

Er, Portugal/Brazil. I am rooting against the Inselaffen.

Paul LoDuca, DH.

I hate that.
   27. Banta Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:06 PM (#2082768)
LoDuca might turn into a bigger problem than Kaz ever was, because no one seems to know that he sucks.
   28. Banta Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:09 PM (#2082773)
Hah, so Delgado is more than a little bit banged up, it seems.

I see Reyes is very in to taking pitches tonight.

I'm starting to loathe LoDuca. He's robbing Beltran, Delgado, and Wright of precious RBI opportunities.
   33. NJ in DC (Now searching for employment!) Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:13 PM (#2082779)
This umpire was painfully slow on the 0-1 pitch to Beltran.

I'm glad that because Cairo is so terrific at handling the bat, otherwise we might lose something with Cano on the DL.

And I guess the Mets will have its third starter hand-delivered. Jeff Weaver was DFAed.
   43. Banta Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:22 PM (#2082806)
Just a feeling I have, but I don't think Omar wants any part of Jeff Weaver.

For the minimum I'd take him, maybe Peterson can find 10 minutes to work with him.
   46. Raskolnikov Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:23 PM (#2082809)
The top of the order is driving me nuts again. Reyes has stopped working the count. LoDuca does a great job working the count - and then proceeds to waste it with a meaningless hack. LoDuca, a walk is a good result.
   47. rLr Is King Of The Romans And Above Grammar Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:24 PM (#2082811)
Giambi is on some kinda roll.

Nice job, Duque.
   49. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:24 PM (#2082813)
I'd take him for above the minimum. He's better than this ####.
   50. AJM Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:24 PM (#2082814)
Yeah, El Duque sucks.
   51. rLr Is King Of The Romans And Above Grammar Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:26 PM (#2082815)
Did those monkeys boo Rodriguez after that out? I wouldn't put it past them.
   52. AJM Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:26 PM (#2082817)

Me too, but they don't need to pay him more than the minimum, right?
   53. Raskolnikov Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:26 PM (#2082818)
Giambi has carried this Yankee offense.
   54. Banta Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:27 PM (#2082819)
I'd take Weaver for the minimum too, but in addition to being craptastic this year, he has a history of not having the mental fortitude to succeed in New York. I'm not saying that stuff like that is a deciding factor to Omar, but I get the feeling from him that he does put value on it.
   55. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:27 PM (#2082821)

I'd take Weaver for the minimum too, but in addition to being craptastic this year, he has a history of not having the mental fortitude to succeed in New York.

I think two different aspects from his original NY go-around could help. National League and Shea Stadium.
   58. Banta Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:29 PM (#2082824)
I love Cliff being back, even with that popout. He rules.
   59. Banta Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:30 PM (#2082825)
Once again, I'm not saying that I put a lot of stock in the mentality to succeed in NY stuff, but I suspect that Omar does.

Well, LAA has 10 days to trade him or release him. I'm going assume (correctly) there are plenty of teams interested in his services and a trade is the likely route. In that case, a team may pay more of his salary.
   61. AJM Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:32 PM (#2082828)

It does suck that things that the Mets are going through just to find a starter of Kris Benson's quality.
   63. Raskolnikov Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:33 PM (#2082833)
I'd give Weaver a shot, but I wouldn't pin any hopes on him. It's not as if suckiness can correct itself quickly. He needs a stint in the minors to work out his issues.

It's been 1 1/2 innings, and I'm feeling ill about this game already
   64. Chris Dial Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:34 PM (#2082835)

Okay, the freebie part of the Yankee lineup.
   66. Banta Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:36 PM (#2082840)
You know, Jeff Weaver is pretty much garbage, actually. Trachsel probably has a good a chance to be league average as he does.

I certainly don't want to give up anything of any value to get a chance for a guy like Weaver to be slightly above average.

Yeah, but their guys don't refer to extras as "bonus cantos," as a certain Bronx Science embarrassment on the Yankee broadcast does.
   73. Banta Posted: June 30, 2006 at 07:41 PM (#2082852)
Well, then you probably won't get him.

Then I guess I'm fine with that. I want a real upgrade at third starter, for the playoffs. The regular season really doesn't matter anymore. Our current crop of starters is more than adequate.

Hey, at least our announcers aren't all "Ughhhhhhhhhhh...extra innings...my job as a baseball announcer is so tough that calling a few more innings is going to kill me".

That's just Keith Hernandez. And that's because he has better things to do than announce games. Like blowing massive amounts of coke and having sex with hookers!
