NYM (47-32) at NYY (45-32) - 1:20pm ET

NYM: S. Trachsel (6-4, 4.82) vs. NYY: R. Johnson (9-6, 4.84)

The best team in New York takes on the Mets.  This pitching matchup features the slowest working pitcher in baseball opposing the slowest throwing pitcher in baseball.  As an extra bonus, you get Tim McCarver calling it.

Any preseason takers on Trachsel's ERA being better than RJs on July 1?
   2. TVerik and his cavalcade of whimsy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 09:20 AM (#2083385)
By the way, I have a ReplayTV, so I have to try to figure out the end time of this game now in order to make sure I get it all.

I'm putting the over/under at 5PM, and I'll likely record straight through 'till about 6.
   3. TVerik and his cavalcade of whimsy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 09:35 AM (#2083389)
I've been reading Philip K Dick stories the last week or so.

Do you think it's possible that a robot killed Mariano Rivera while he was in the minors and took his place?
   4. SG in ATL Posted: July 01, 2006 at 09:44 AM (#2083391)
Who are you talking to Erik?
   5. TVerik and his cavalcade of whimsy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 09:44 AM (#2083392)
If only there were some kind of magic serum that added miles per hour to a middling reliever's fastball. But that's un-possible.
   6. TVerik and his cavalcade of whimsy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 09:46 AM (#2083393)
I see no reason for others to be in the thread.

Alternately (I told you, I'm in a sci-fi mindset at the moment), the fact that I cannot see them and they aren't responding doesn't mean they're not there.

Any preseason takers on Trachsel's ERA being better than RJs on July 1?

After the game it won't.

Philip K Dick is awesome.
   9. TVerik and his cavalcade of whimsy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 11:05 AM (#2083423)
Every time a movie based on one of his stories comes out, I read the whole bunch of stories again and ignore the movie.
   10. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 11:15 AM (#2083427)
As of this morning,

Jeter is batting .333 and has 46 rbi, and career high rbi is 102;

Reyes is batting .289 with only 36 rbi. His career high rbi is 58;

Alex had 130 rbi, and has top 100 rbi for almost 10 seasons;

Wright had 102 rbi last year, and it was the only time he has done so.

Clearly Alex and Jeter is better than Reyes and Wright for the next five years.

Wow, I'm watching the England-Port. match. What a horrible red card call on Rooney. Why can't they find any refs with competence and a spine?
   13. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 11:32 AM (#2083433)
You kidding me Rask? It was well-deserved.
   14. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 11:35 AM (#2083434)
Oh, and I've only read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? which is a fine novel.
   15. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 11:38 AM (#2083435)
Seems like Willie has really learned from his mistakes. I present the worst lineup of the season for you:

J. Reyes ss
P. Lo Duca dh
C. Beltran cf
D. Wright 3b
J. Franco 1b
X. Nady rf
C. Woodward 2b
R. Castro c
E. Marrero lf

I pin the chances of winning at around 4%. If they somehow pull it out today, I say it's the win of the season.
   16. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 11:43 AM (#2083438)
You kidding me Rask? It was well-deserved.

No way. That was incidental contact. You could see that the refs only went red after being bombarded by pleas from the Portugal players.
   17. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 11:46 AM (#2083439)
Well he did stomp on the Portuguese player. Then he lost his cool and shoved someone with an elbow. I'd say that's pretty damn close to a red.
   18. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 11:49 AM (#2083440)
Ooo, late flurry by England. They'll still lose in PKs.
   19. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 11:49 AM (#2083441)
I don't think a ref should make such an impacting decision unless he's sure of that type of call. That wasn't even borderline and to affect the game at such a level is poor officiating.
   20. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 11:51 AM (#2083442)
Well, I don't either. But it shouldn't come as surprising. They've done it time and time again in this World Cup. Rooney should know better. The shove was the final straw for the ref.
   21. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 11:53 AM (#2083444)
No replay of the red card so far.

So I can't say.
   22. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: July 01, 2006 at 11:53 AM (#2083445)
That lineup isn't wonderful, but I'm not really sure what could be done to make it any better.
   23. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 11:54 AM (#2083446)
No replay of the red card so far.

So I can't say.

Yeah, don't you love ABC? Worst coverage ever.
   24. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:05 PM (#2083452)
For some reason, i would think being a man up would be a bigger advantage than has been evident so far.
   25. TVerik and his cavalcade of whimsy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:06 PM (#2083453)
Actually, ABC is just piggybacking the "world feed". So broadcasters around the world have exactly the same replays.
   26. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:07 PM (#2083455)
Haha, Crouch is terrible!
   27. Best Regards, Larry Mahnken Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:07 PM (#2083456)
I doubt I'll ever watch a non-World Cup game, but I am very much enjoying this tournament.
   28. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:08 PM (#2083458)
England's played great since the red card. At least 2 tremendous chances - if they don't prevail, they're going to regret not converting.

BTW, Matt, how can you say Crouch isn't a quality player after this match?
   29. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:09 PM (#2083459)
I don't know Erik, I was reading The Guardian's game blog and they are talking about replays. And someone from Canada who I am chatting with said he saw a replay.
   30. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:10 PM (#2083460)
BTW, Matt, how can you say Crouch isn't a quality player after this match?

If he ##### up his penalty later.
   31. Best Regards, Larry Mahnken Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:10 PM (#2083461)
For some reason, i would think being a man up would be a bigger advantage than has been evident so far.

I think the reason it's more of an advantage in hockey is because you can move faster and the hard puck moves faster and truer on ice than an air-filled ball on grass, making it a lot easier to set up the unguarded man.
   32. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:11 PM (#2083463)
Actually, ABC is just piggybacking the "world feed". So broadcasters around the world have exactly the same replays.

They can't edit from the feed? No replay at end of regulation, end of 1st overtime? They are forced to show players drinking water instead.
   33. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:12 PM (#2083464)
For some reason, i would think being a man up would be a bigger advantage than has been evident so far.

It should be. Portugal was playing extremely passive in the final 30 minutes of regulation.
   34. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:13 PM (#2083468)
That was an underwhelming reply of the red card incident.
   35. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:13 PM (#2083469)
There's a replay. Yep, groin shot.
   36. Dinner With Frenchy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:14 PM (#2083471)
I hate Newscorp. Watching New York baseball fellate itself is painful.

Wright: "Derek Jeter is my hero."
Jeter: "Jose Reyes is fun to watch."
   37. TVerik and his cavalcade of whimsy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:15 PM (#2083472)
They can't edit from the feed? No replay at end of regulation, end of 1st overtime? They are forced to show players drinking water instead.

That's a very good question.

In order to edit from the feed, they'd need to pay for and staff a control room. Which raises the cost for the game significantly, without adding at all to the ratings. After all, who would watch World Cup action ONLY if there were extended replays?
   38. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:23 PM (#2083480)
Geez, the Portugese are such divers. And he's my David Wright of soccer, but Lampard has disappeared since the early 2nd half.
   39. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:23 PM (#2083481)
After all, who would watch World Cup action ONLY if there were extended replays?

i guess more people if they did a better job. the world cup games are amazing, but a lot of time, the analyst are talking with no visual examples.

of course, it could also be the fox nightmare too. so i guess this is better.
   40. TVerik and his cavalcade of whimsy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:24 PM (#2083483)
By the way, before the game starts, I think that Dick fans should pick up the various collections of his short stories - I think they're better than the novels.

I recommend this one.
   41. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:25 PM (#2083485)
but Lampard has disappeared since the early 2nd half.

He's playing D?

   43. TVerik and his cavalcade of whimsy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:27 PM (#2083489)
Broadcasters have exclusivity, and that's why. We can't have consumers choosing the best coverage of these games. They're gonna get the coverage that suits think they should get.
   44. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:28 PM (#2083491)
Hey, the Mets have as many hits today as yesterday!

but Lampard has disappeared since the early 2nd half.

Yeah, but the English need him for midfield presence and some offense. Gerrard on the other hand has been fantastic in this game.

McCarver makes idiotic comment No. 1 of the day.

   54. Best Regards, Larry Mahnken Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:31 PM (#2083503)
PK time, I guess. This will be cool, I've never seen one before.

Penalty kicks suck. It pretty much comes down to if the goalkeeper guesses right.

It's like deciding who wins on a coinflip.
   55. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:32 PM (#2083505)
Terry definitely will be one.

Carragher is a failure.

   78. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:44 PM (#2083540)
Carragher should be tortured and shot.
   79. Joshemy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:45 PM (#2083543)
He's out!!!
   80. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:45 PM (#2083544)
Can't believe they didn't let Crouch shoot instead of Carragher.
   81. Big Red Basketball (NJ) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:45 PM (#2083545)
Even Tim McCarver knew Jeter was out. Heh.

From a Yankee perspective, they have to take advantage of this.

   89. Big Red Basketball (NJ) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:48 PM (#2083554)
It was retarded to start the runners with Giambi batting. What the hell was up with Damon on that "run"?
   90. TVerik and his cavalcade of whimsy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:50 PM (#2083557)
Also, I tried to emphasize "have", not "take". Which makes no sense.

Trax is so deliberate.

Over/under on Trachsel innings today: 5.1

I'll take the under.
   93. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:52 PM (#2083561)
Mauer is really hitting .392? Damn.
   94. Big Red Basketball (NJ) Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:53 PM (#2083562)
That was a waste.
   95. CrosbyBird Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:53 PM (#2083563)
You don't get to set the over/under and then choose!

But I'll take the over on 5.1 anyway.

Good thing I traded him.

That should have been a hit, the Mets are suffering from a run of bad luck.

You don't get to set the over/under and then choose!

I set it objectively.

Mets trying to kill Johnson. They figure this is the only way they can win?
   100. rLr Is King Of The Romans And Above Grammar Posted: July 01, 2006 at 12:58 PM (#2083572)
That was uncanny. On two consecutive pitches, no less.

Randy Johnson is still terrible, though.
