This one is going to be ugly for the Yankee fans. Unless Detroit picks this series to crash-and-burn. I could live with that.

In fact, I'm not even going to hang around and follow them getting smacked, I'm going to the beach. It's Memorial Day, for ####'s sake.
   3. Joshemy Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:07 PM (#2042290)
The Yankees plan to win with Randy on the mound today seems to be to try to impale everyone with bats.

It's a sad commentary that I wish I were getting the YES feed.

Who pitched that inning for New York? Maybe the Yankees signed Ryan Anderson and decided to give him a try.
   7. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:18 PM (#2042304)
Bad placement, Jason.

How does Bonderman have a 4.50 ERA?
   9. Joshemy Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:21 PM (#2042310)
That was a pretty filthy pitch to Posada.
   10. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:26 PM (#2042319)
Nice pitch on 1-2, Johnson. Good thing Sheffield ran it down.

Long has so little chance in this AB.
   12. Larry Mahnken Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:31 PM (#2042321)
They couldn't find a better DH than Long?
   13. Cutter Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:31 PM (#2042323)
Long is the DH???? *&%^%$&^*
   14. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:34 PM (#2042325)
I can't believe Long made contact. And it almost would have been better if he hadn't.

The Melk-man delivers.

Melky = ROY?
   16. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:35 PM (#2042328)
Melky = ROY?

Ian Kinsler is already ahead of him and he only has 35 ABs.
   17. Larry Mahnken Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:36 PM (#2042329)
I heart Melky.
   18. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:36 PM (#2042330)
This is a pretty wimpy rally, but I'll take it.

At least a productive out, Skeets.
   19. Cutter Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:36 PM (#2042331)
Ahead in what? HRs?

If you mean AVG then 35 atbats is hardly enough to show anything.
   20. Larry Mahnken Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:38 PM (#2042336)
If Papelbon is still a rookie he's already won the ROY
   21. Joshemy Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:39 PM (#2042338)
I think Francisco Liriano is also making a good early case for ROY.
   22. Larry Mahnken Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:39 PM (#2042339)
A-Rod would have waited for him to get his foot back on the bag.
   23. KronicFatigue Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:40 PM (#2042341)
how long has arod been batting 5th? i've been MIA for a week, and everything has gone to ####. Long at DH????

He's already got three homers. The way Melky is going, I don't see him getting that many. And, of course 35 ABs is a tiny sample, but Kinsler was highly touted and has been producing like it, now that he's healthy.

That was lucky. Thanks, Carlos.
   25. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:42 PM (#2042345)

Verlander has a pretty good argument, too.
   26. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:44 PM (#2042349)
I love Melky, but he has no ROY case this year. This could change, but I don't foresee Verlander, Liriano, Papelbon, and Kinsler all doing worse than him.

Sheffield looks awkward as hell out there.
   27. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:47 PM (#2042351)
I thought the 2-2 to Inge was a strike. But when you're a lousy pitcher like Johnson, you don't get the borderline calls.
   28. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:49 PM (#2042354)
What's happened to Polanco's patience? He's got a .298 average and a .311 OBP.

Johnson will walk Polanco and give up a homer to Thames. Again.
   29. Cutter Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:51 PM (#2042356)
Liriano and Papelbon are likely the two lead horses.

Its tough as a closer to win RoY, but it has happened. And Liriano just started making starts.
   30. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:53 PM (#2042358)
Randy Johnson still sucks.
   31. Cutter Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:53 PM (#2042359)
Normally I think Randy is being an a-hole when he whines about calls but today it does seem like he's getting squeezed a bit.

But 740 OPS corner outfielders are typical RoY candidates? Cabrera needs a miracle to win the award.
   33. Sean McNally Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:56 PM (#2042367)
It's early to cast votes - but I myself like Liriano or Verlander for ROY.

Oh, and the plate ump is just randomly calling balls and strikes - there's no real rhyme, reason or pattern to it.
   34. Cutter Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:56 PM (#2042368)
Should Arod be making more air outs than ground outs?
   35. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: May 29, 2006 at 01:57 PM (#2042369)
Verlander is 7-3 with a 2.55 ERA. Liriano is 3-0 with a 2.51 ERA. Liriano strikes a lot more guys out, but Verlander is ahead of him right now.

Terribly unclutch.

I'm guessing the trivia answer is Mantle and Maris.

Once again, I guarantee that Long is a dead duck.

Or he just needs to start hitting more extra base hits. If that's a miracle considering he's a rookie and power usually follows as the year progresses, fine.

2 base hits after Arod's GIDP. Grrrr.

He could OPS .850 and I still think he's behind Verlander and Liriano.

The Tigers this season or Johnson this game?

The latter. I figured the Tigers for an 83-88 win team this year.

Johnson this game - and its not particularly close.

Well, I suck. I got neither of the trivia guys. The Yankees won a lot of MVP awards in the 50s and early 60s.
   52. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:09 PM (#2042396)
Luckily, Rodriguez sucked the life out of the Tigers' inning, too. That was a good play.

   56. rLr Did Your Mother 'Cause She's Hot As A Baker Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:10 PM (#2042401)
Johnson's slider is much less flat than usual.

Let's not get carried away - Berra won back to back, and deservedly so. ('54 and '55)
Mantle won in '56 and '57 - deservedly so.

Jackie Jenson's '58 award is a crime against Mantle. Mick should have tracked him down and killed him for his liver afterwards.

I have no problems with Nellie Fox's award in '59.

Maris won in '60 and '61. In '60 he beat Mantle by three points - but again deservedly so.

Mantle wins again in '62, then Elston Howard wins in '63.. a good choice. After 1964 baseball ended until the mid-1970s.

what happened to our Jeter?
   66. Larry Mahnken Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:29 PM (#2042430)

Maris was more valuable in 1960, but Mantle much more valuable in '61.
   67. Larry Mahnken Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:30 PM (#2042431)
So Randy is helping us remember that he used to be a good pitcher on Memorial Day. How appropriate.
   68. PJ Martinez Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:30 PM (#2042432)
"If that's a miracle considering he's a rookie and power usually follows as the year progresses, fine."

Power "usually follows as the year progresses"? Does that statistical principle have a name? Melky's ml numbers do not suggest a ROY-caliber OF, nor do his numbers so far. Hence: he'll need a miracle.

And I'm pretty sure a closer won in the AL last year, right? I bet if the writers voted today they'd give it to either Verlander or Papelbon. Liriano would come in 3rd. But there's a lot of the season left, of course.
   69. Sometimes it Rains (sj) Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:31 PM (#2042433)
Dude, Mantle played Center, in yellowstone.

Maris played Right, in old yankee stadium, you know, 250 down the line yankee stadium
   70. PJ Martinez Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:31 PM (#2042434)

How does Johnson actually look? I assume he looks much better, but 3K/2BB isn't exactly dominant. Is Comerica helping him in the longball department?
   74. Sometimes it Rains (sj) Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:33 PM (#2042441)
Um, WTF! Terrence Long is the DH? what kind of sense does that make!

This is the dumbest lineup ever.
   75. Sometimes it Rains (sj) Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:35 PM (#2042442)
seriously, long is a fly catcher or anything, but if we must play him, why not DH Sheffield?

I don't even think Joe is trying anymore.

I figured Jeter hurt himself when he was super slow on breaking up that DP the time he was on base.

His fastball is mid-90s and hitting spots, his slider is spectacular. He looks like Randy Johnson.

   83. Matt Waters Posted: May 29, 2006 at 02:41 PM (#2042452)
Two points:

1. Bonderman needs another pitch. He throws a hanging slider almost once every AB, and while it is nasty when it works, that's just too many tumblers rolling up to the plate against Major League Hitters. If I'm a batter, I'm just waiting for a fastball I can handle or that awful tumbler, like the one Alex drilled.

2. Randy looks great. He is absolutely painting the inside edge with a letter high fastball. That's unhittable right there. His slider is also great. Hell, he turned it around against St. Louis this time last year, right?

Well, I am an optimist.
