First! (To first?)

Elite Johan would be awesome tonight.
   3. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 05:09 PM (#2868248)
Blanton has dominated the Mets in two career starts. I hope that changes today.

SS Jose Reyes
RF Endy Chavez
3B David Wright
CF Carlos Beltran
1B Carlos Delgado
2B Damion Easley
LF Marlon Anderson
C Ramon Castro
LHP Johan Santana

Marlon Anderson is starting again. Mmmkay.
   5. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 06:23 PM (#2868332)
How on earth are the Mets scoring runs with that lineup?!
   6. Jesus Don't Want Mets For A Sunbeam Posted: July 22, 2008 at 06:27 PM (#2868338)
That's a pretty optimal lineup. Typically, one would see Brian Schneider starting against the RHP.
   7. Joshemy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 06:38 PM (#2868350)
Marlon Anderson? Damnit.
   8. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 06:41 PM (#2868352)
How on earth are the Mets scoring runs with that lineup?!

Reyes, Wright, and Beltran all provide very good to elite offense for their positions. Ramon Castro and Brian Schneider (.360ish OBP against righties) provide good offense from first. Delgado has been a .900 OPS hitter since April 27th. Easley and Castillo provide averagish offense from second.

Nobody has a lineup with 8 or 9 all-stars. With a resurgent Delgado, the Mets have 4 very good hitters, 2-3 averagish, and 2 below average. That leads to a good offense. It helps that they are an excellent baserunning team in general.

Anderson IN FRONT OF CASTRO? Fire Manuel.

Anderson IN FRONT OF CASTRO? Fire Manuel.

The magic is gone, isn't it?
   11. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:03 PM (#2868377)
Nah, I still like Jerry. This is pretty bad, though.
   12. Jesus Don't Want Mets For A Sunbeam Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:04 PM (#2868381)
If Castro hits the ball on the ground, its an automatic DP. You can't have him batting seventh!
   13. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:10 PM (#2868389)
Nah, I still like Jerry.

I meant with Marlon.
   14. Joshemy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:11 PM (#2868392)
Tatis stole all of Marlon's Magic.
   15. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:11 PM (#2868394)
Castro has a .793 OPS as a Met. Just sayin'.

I won't miss Pat The Bat when he's playing LF in Fenway. I don't care if Manny ####### Ramirez replaces him.
   17. Jesus Don't Want Mets For A Sunbeam Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:15 PM (#2868396)
A nice start for Johan.
   18. Jesus Don't Want Mets For A Sunbeam Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:16 PM (#2868397)
Game over.
   19. Joshemy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:17 PM (#2868398)
Starting well.
   20. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:17 PM (#2868399)
Johan has given up far more hits than I'd have ever guessed.
   21. Jesus Don't Want Mets For A Sunbeam Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:20 PM (#2868401)
I was expecting Pedro circa 2005.

Santana is not even on the same ####### continent.
   22. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:23 PM (#2868405)
Santana is not even on the same ####### continent.

He's been entirely forgettable. Nothing too bad, nothing too good.
   23. Dan Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:24 PM (#2868406)
As a non-Mets fan, I hadn't really considered that Johan had been a disappointment until recently after seeing how dominant CC and Harden have been since switching leagues.
   24. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:26 PM (#2868408)
I have a bad feeling about this game.
   25. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:30 PM (#2868417)
Matt Holliday, one of the best left fielders in the league, would have to play *gasp* right field?
   26. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:31 PM (#2868418)
As a non-Mets fan, I hadn't really considered that Johan had been a disappointment until recently after seeing how dominant CC and Harden have been since switching leagues.

Harden has made two starts, one against SF and one against Zona. Let's see him make a start against a team without an embarassing offense.
   27. Rodder Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:31 PM (#2868419)
Ruiz lifts his 2008 OPS to .580.
   28. Jesus Don't Want Mets For A Sunbeam Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:32 PM (#2868420)
Even Santana's outs are hard.
   29. Bob Koo Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:32 PM (#2868421)
Johan is frustrating. He got lucky that Rollins hit the ball right at Easley.
   30. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:34 PM (#2868424)
Santana isn't the unquestioned "best pitcher in baseball" anymore. He started to decline last year, and he's declining now. There's little doubt about that.
   31. Jesus Don't Want Mets For A Sunbeam Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:35 PM (#2868425)
I wouldn't call him "lucky", per se. But... its more luck than stuff at this point.
   32. Bob Koo Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:38 PM (#2868430)
Tatis really should be playing, even if it means three straight righties 6 through 8.
   33. Joshemy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:41 PM (#2868431)
Castro infield single!
   34. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:41 PM (#2868432)
At least they cleared the pitcher.
   35. Bob Koo Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:43 PM (#2868434)
I'm confident we'll hit Blanton the second time through the order.
   36. Jesus Don't Want Mets For A Sunbeam Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:43 PM (#2868436)
You hit better than you pitch, Johan. ;p
   37. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:44 PM (#2868438)
I'm confident we'll hit Blanton the second time through the order.

17 career innings suggest otherwise.
   38. Bob Koo Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:48 PM (#2868439)
Is there a place to find Johan's run support and where it ranks in the NL?
   39. Joshemy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:51 PM (#2868445)
NL Run Support.

Johan is 35th out of 68 starters with at least 60 innings pitched with 4.89 RS.
   40. Bob Koo Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:52 PM (#2868447)
Here we go.
   41. Joshemy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:53 PM (#2868448)
Let's get a Reyes Run.
   42. Bob Koo Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:53 PM (#2868449)
Thanks, Jeremy.
Reyes has to be careful here.
   43. Bob Koo Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2868453)
Blanton doesn't give up stolen bases. Reyes has to play it safe.
   44. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2868455)
Blanton's problem for much of the year is that he'll absolutely dominate for three to five innings, only to completely lose his #### and give up four runs in an inning.
   45. Joshemy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:56 PM (#2868457)
I'll take that.
   46. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:57 PM (#2868458)
Utley makes a mistake. That usually doesn't happen.
   47. Bob Koo Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:57 PM (#2868459)
Let's go David. Nothing rally-killing here.
   48. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:58 PM (#2868462)
What's the season record for RBI for the Mets? Wright is on pace for 125 or so.
   49. Joshemy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:59 PM (#2868463)
Piazza, 124, 1999.
   50. Bob Koo Posted: July 22, 2008 at 07:59 PM (#2868464)
What kind of send was that!!!!!
   51. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:00 PM (#2868465)
With no one out? You can't send him there. That's horrible.
   52. Bob Koo Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:00 PM (#2868467)
Keith is dead wrong. You don't take the risk with nobody out and the pitcher obviously struggling.
   53. Joshemy Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:00 PM (#2868468)
No problem sending Endy there. That was just a good relay by the Phils.
   54. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:01 PM (#2868469)
Keith loves the call to get a guy hosed at the plate with nobody out against a struggling pitcher?
   55. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:01 PM (#2868470)
With Beltran and Delgado up? That's an awful send.
   56. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2868471)
I guess it's obvious I'm watching on quite a delay.
   57. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2868472)
Seriously, Blanton isn't a guy who is going to strike out guys either. Horrible send.
   58. Bob Koo Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2868473)
Blanton doesn't strike out guys either, making that an even worse send.
   59. Karl from NY Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:02 PM (#2868474)
Of course, we are seeing that send in retrospect. If he's safe, we're ecstatic about the 2-run double and nobody thinks twice about the send.
   60. Bob Koo Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:03 PM (#2868475)
C'mon Carlos II.
   61. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2868479)
Of course, we are seeing that send in retrospect. If he's safe, we're ecstatic about the 2-run double and nobody thinks twice about the send.

If you send him, he has to make it. It's like making the third out at third. It's a no-no.

DELGADIT!!!
   63. Flynn brings the ghetto on Prince Fielder Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:06 PM (#2868483)
I guess Mex's reasoning was that it's a percentage play, and most times sending Endy works. I don't know if I agree with that considering who was coming up but I think it's defensible
   64. Bob Koo Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:06 PM (#2868484)
Delgado makes it all moot! Man he is locked in.
   65. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:06 PM (#2868485)
DELGADIT!!!!!!!!!!1

That wasn't a bad curveball, he just nailed it.

Que desgracia que es tostado Delgado.

I guess Mex's reasoning was that it's a percentage play, and most times sending Endy works. I don't know if I agree with that considering who was coming up but I think it's defensible

If there were two outs, it'd be an excellent send. But with none out.a contact pitcher on the mound, and Beltran and Delgado out? No way.
   69. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:11 PM (#2868495)
Delgado has a 1.233 OPS starting from the Yankee game.
   70. Hysterical & Useless Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2868496)
I'm "watching" on Gameday so I didn't see the Endy play, but generally the rule is with the middle of the order hitting you don't get a guy thrown out at home...
   71. Flynn brings the ghetto on Prince Fielder Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:12 PM (#2868497)
If there were two outs, it'd be an excellent send. But with none out.a contact pitcher on the mound, and Beltran and Delgado out? No way.

Well, when you phrase it that way..

Dude, Carlos Delgado rocks right now.
   74. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2868511)
You know, sometimes I'd just rather the Met pitcher make the third and let Reyes lead off.
   75. Swoboda is freedom Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2868512)
Free Schneider. Or play Fred Schneider.
   76. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2868515)
Hey, Castro's had the most important at-bat in this game so far. The infield bunt cleared Santana and let Reyes lead off.
   77. CrosbyBird Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2868516)
I actually liked sending Chavez because three players had to make good plays to get him. Burrell tracked the ball down well, hit Rollins perfectly, then Rollins was perfectly in position to catch and throw, and Ruiz did a great job blocking the plate. When I saw where the ball was hit, I figured Endy would score fairly easily with his speed.
   78. Russlan is glad the 2008 season is over Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2868518)

YEAH!

That was a nice DP there. Way to hit him.

Key inning in the ballgame here. Utley, Burrell, and Howard.

Nice, Johan.

Johann seems to be doing well. I'm caught in my 13th mother ####### hour at work. Is he dealing? 76 pitches after 6 innings? Is he doing as well as he looks like from here on Yahoo?

Is it a surprise that Keith likes #####...cats?

What do you guys think Delgado's HOF chances are? Let's say he hits 10 more homers this year and ends the season with 460. I think he needs to hit 550 to make the HOF. He's got a boatload of RBI and has never really been a DH so he'll get credit for that.
   89. AJM Posted: July 22, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2868552)
What do you guys think Delgado's HOF chances are?

I don't know. There are a lot of first base candidates in this era.

That's a big "let's say." If he does that, sure.

He won't do that.
