Hamels vs. Dempster
Blanton vs. Harden - The Former A's Deathmatch!
Myers vs. Lilly
Moyer vs. Zambrano

The Phillies starters are better than I thought they would be (except Hamels) but I still think the Cubs are a good bet to take 3 of 4 in this series.

The Rain sitting over the city right now should clear out by tonight. A storm or two might run through tonight. We'll probably get the game in, although there might be a delay if the skies open up.

I sure hope so, Cabbage. Thanks, I was wondering. I'm going tonight. I don't think I've been to a Dempster start yet. I'm also going next Wednesday, I haven't been to a Harden start yet either.

Sweeping this homestand will do wonders to ward off any ballpark fatigue I might otherwise suffer. I'll be at every game but tomorrow's.

Interesting. I think that Zambrano is the pitcher I've seen the most, and I'll be at Sunday's game. I know I've seen Sutcliffe probably the most, but of recent history its been Z and Glendon Rusch (who oddly pitched remarkably well in most of those starts I witnessed).
   7. Meatwad Posted: August 28, 2008 at 02:24 PM (#2920423)
iv seen marquis, and glendon rusch twice(once in milwaukee and once at wrigley). needless to say i havnt gotten to see the good pitching match ups

Glendon Rusch (who oddly pitched remarkably well in most of those starts I witnessed).

Hark! Noble Jack was blessed with many a vision of the rare Glendon the Good. The late Abbot of Deadspin prophesized that one given to such sightings was to lead the peasants of Cubs Chatter to the Holy Realm of Playoff Chatter.

Lord Vincennes, we shall follow you to the ends of the earth!

... at least until we run out of gin.

I'll be watching from Genna's tonight and my girl and favorite bar manager Darcy has never left me for want of Plymouth or Beefeater. Well, except for the Great Plymouth Shortage of 2006, but that wasn't her fault something happened over there and my distributor couldn't get it.

Ryan Dempster (31, RHP, 15-5, 2.85)

This still boggles my mind. What's Demp performing at, the 95% percentile of his PECOTA projection? They probably would have considered him a closer, huh?
   12. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 28, 2008 at 05:35 PM (#2920833)
My best friend called me last night to tell me he was going to tonight's game, which is a big deal, since we all live in Michigan. His girlfriend comes from a pretty wealthy family, so they're able to get great seats to Cub games. I believe he said he'll be in the fifth row or so down the line. Bigger news than that was he'd just bought an engagement ring the previous day and will pop the question within the next week or two. All of this means, besides him settling down, is I'll probably be able to finagle my way into some good tickets for home games over the next few years. And thanks to him, I'll probably be finally getting my damn Carlos Marmol jersey shirt. Huzzah.

As for the actual series, I think a split is likely and a series win is within reach. The Phillies have enjoyed a nice surge of late thanks to some very good pitching. Their offense is still scuffling, so hopefully that means one of baseball's best offenses will overcome hot pitching.

Fearless Prediction

Ryan Howard: 2-11, 2HR, 9K, 1BB, 2RBI

Walks, well done, I guess. I just read the rest of that “Carlos Zambrano is the ####” thread where they forgot the definite article. Since we’re among friends here I thought I’d share: I go to Lithuanian poodle-enthusiast boards to work on my obnoxiousness. Gotta be ready once we win. How do you guys prepare for being as unbearable as a Red Sox (Mets, Yankees, Dodgers, Cardinals) fan? Since Cubs fans are already accused of arrogance I thought I might as well get good at it.
   15. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: August 28, 2008 at 07:37 PM (#2920944)
Carl, at the moment I seem to be arguing with Sox fans about the viability of Hawk Harrelson as a PBP announcer, so I'm probably trying to soak up some obnoxiousness through osmosis.

Maybe I should read some Deadspin commenters boards and listen to some Limbaugh while I'm at it.
   16. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 07:43 PM (#2920948)
Ignoring the Rah! Rah! idiocy, I can’t help but wonder if Hendry just might be a pretty god GM. Getting Dusty: Hendry’s fault. Catering to Dusty’s wishes: Hendry’s job. Now that the Cubs seem to have a competent manager their GM seems to make competent acquisitions. I like DeRosa. #### it. I like Edmonds. Marquis? Well, he’s a more than competent #5, right? Even if he makes #3 money.
   17. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 07:52 PM (#2920951)
BPJ, I’m in awe. If I ever meet anybody defending The Hawk! (HAWK!) as a competent announcer I will have to go for the glove. PBRs at dawn! Don’t read Deadspin, though. I never did and I can still be unpleasant.

POP QUIZ! How many games will Eyre lose (for us) this series? O/U is at 2, obviously.

Completely apropos of nothing baseball:

From the "context? who needs context?" dept.: I just saw a little plug on MSNBC saying: "We reported, you decided. MSNBC has had more viewers than FOX News during each night of the Democratic National Convention." Wait, you mean more people watched the "liberal" news network than the "conservative" news network for coverage of the national convention of the "liberal" political party? Why, that's shocking! My whole worldview has just turned upside down!

In other news: "Dog Bites Man"
   19. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: August 28, 2008 at 07:58 PM (#2920955)
Since I think we take 3 of 4 this series, I'll take the "under".
   20. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:01 PM (#2920956)
BPJ, I’m furrin! I don’t have a dog in that race. I shouldn’t care about American elections. But, and you knew that there was going to be one of those, there’s one thing that blows my mind: The longer a republican president is in charge the more hoops I have to jump through if I want to visit the US. So I’m stumped: The republicans are supposed to reduce government interference, but didn’t. The democrats want more interference, but weren’t able to implement it. Stool samples are inevitable, aren’t they? I should have married that one chick. Damn. Go Cubs, Go!
   21. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:03 PM (#2920958)
The bracketed statement alluded to the fact, that so far Eyre losses went against us. This series they’re awesome, desirable, kick! ass!. I want 3-1, I want the over.

Instant replay in the middle of the season: Really stupid. Len and Bob: by far the best broadcasters in the NL central.

Ah! I misunderstood! In that case...hmm, you know, I'll still take the "under". However, using the LaTroy Hawkins Principle, I do think he'll blow 1.

Oh, and be not fooled by whatever you may hear from the GOP. The average voter who votes Republican probably does believe in smaller government. But I'm convinced that anyone who actually runs for office, no matter what party or where they fit on the "lib/con" scale, wants MORE government, BIGGER government, MORE power. Each side wants to expand government power here in the US, the real fight is over what that power would be used for.

Bah, enough of this. Chicago Cubs baseball is on the air!
   24. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:13 PM (#2920965)
I can understand that Dempster’s glove wiggle is grating. I love it, but it would annoy the #### out of me if I was rooting for the other team. If the wiggle is the only thing Rothschild ever contributed he did his job.
   25. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:13 PM (#2920966)
Why didn't Riot throw to third? Did ARam not get over to cover? Or just the reasonable thought of "stay out of a big inning in the 1st"? I'm guessing the latter.

Cubs baseball and college football on at the same time. Life is good.

If Dempster can get through this game without giving up a homer, he deserves a medal. He’s Canadian. Let’s fly in Lizzy. Wind blowing out at Wrigley without a homer? That’s at least a knighthood.
   28. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:17 PM (#2920970)
Jesus, Ryan is awesome. Much better than anything they threw out at short in years past. Much better than any position player they developed in years past. He’s still pretty ####, still a pretty bad player. I’m happy with him going for the easy play. Especially considering the butchery Aramis committed this week.
   29. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:18 PM (#2920971)
Hmm. I knew the Cubs were going to watch some tapes of Zambrano's recent delivery to try to figure out his control issues. I didn't think Dempster would be one of them.
   30. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:18 PM (#2920972)
You dare using the small ball against us? I hope your testes fall off, Phillies. That’s right: testes.
   31. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2920973)
* I reserve the right to take everything back if the Cubs lose this by one run.

This is how much faith I have in the Cubs right now. The Phils are a pretty good team, but we're at home, so I'm not worried. I think we're going to win 3 of 4 regardless of anything. Pitching matchups? Don't care. How are the games played? Don't care. The Phils want to play smallball with us? Fine. Pitching-and-defense? Fine. Home Run Derby? Fine.

How's THAT for obnoxious and arrogant? ;)

I am very much kidding, btw. If it isn’t obvious, and whatnot.
   36. NTNgod Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2920982)
I don't think it was "small ball" so much as "Dempster can't throw a strike" for most of the inning.

That slider in the dirt for strike three against Feliz to end the inning was just about the only offspeed pitch he was able to locate that inning.
   37. NTNgod Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:29 PM (#2920984)
Dempster rolled up his sleeves this inning?
   38. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:29 PM (#2920985)
Thank you for the base-hit. That would have been a DP with a runner on first, but well done Derrek, well done.

You can see the blue peeking out on certain shots.

If the two players had to switch the teams they came from after the World Series:

would I trade Demp for Webb right now? Yes.
Lincecum? Yes.
CC? ...

That would put him either 3rd or 4th in Cy Young in the moment at my book. Still no slight to his fabulous season: Ron Gardenhire probably isn't going to win AL Manager of the Year either. Doesn't mean he didn't do a terrific job.
   44. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:35 PM (#2920991)
"switch BACK to the teams they came from"
   45. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:37 PM (#2920994)
NTN: would the average Brewers fan laugh in my face if I wondered whether or not Demp is better than CC right now?
   46. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:39 PM (#2920995)
BPJ, I approach the Cy Young very much as a predictive sport. I try to anticipate who the BBWA will vote for. I think Lincecum is the best pitcher, but I know that Webb will walk away with the award. In the same vein I don’t think Dempster is the second best pitcher, but I do think that he will get the most second place votes. If Webb can manage two more wins in his next six starts he will be unanimous.
   47. NTNgod Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:40 PM (#2920997)
Definitely. Sabathia is a CG machine on top of everything else.
   48. NTNgod Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:41 PM (#2921000)
DeRosa not helping Dempster there. Didn't take a funny hop or anything.
   49. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2921001)
Errors happen. They’re awful, but they happen. I just want Dempster to K>BB. Thank you.
   50. NTNgod Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2921002)
DeRosa made it up to Dempster there.
   51. NTNgod Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2921003)
Much better inning for Dempster. Almost all fastballs, it seemed.
   52. NTNgod Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:47 PM (#2921005)
Outside corner is pretty generous for both sides so far.
   53. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:48 PM (#2921006)
I could never run a team. I thought Edmonds was a horrible acquisition. After Colorado 2005 I thought Dempster could never start. I was wrong. I also thought that Nigel de Jong would never make a credible midfielder. I’m a fan, and this year I might be lucky. I’m a fan of teams run by not idiots. Not! Idiots! Sweet mercy, Not! Idiots!
   54. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:48 PM (#2921007)
Definitely. Sabathia is a CG machine on top of everything else.

That's what I thought.

I wonder if either Demp or Sabathia will keep up their performance for the rest of the year/postseason. Demp is clearly overperforming this year, and I recall the speculation that CC "ran out of gas" in the ALCS last year because he threw so many innings during the regular season last year, and I wonder if Yost can wear him out throwing all these innings. (I also recall the (Prior/Wood speculation about the same thing in the '03 playoffs, but I think that's apples/oranges. CC has a track record of throwing mucho innings that the Cubs didn't.)

For the record, I think having to face the scorching Red Sox offense and having to oppose Josh Beckett contributed more to his poor performances rather than "being out of gas".
   55. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:53 PM (#2921008)
Demp is clearly overperforming this year

I am no longer completely sold on that. How much is coaching, how much is his glove-wiggle. He’s not the worst pitcher in the world. How much is luck?
   56. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:55 PM (#2921009)
I think either way, we can expect at least a slight regression next season. That coupled with Harden's unlikely chance of remaining healthy means Hendry shouldn't avoid adding another arm in the rotation this off-season. Unless they've got a good in-house candidate.
   57. NTNgod Posted: August 28, 2008 at 08:56 PM (#2921010)
Phil Bradley? There's a guy who went from hitting no home runs early on to putting up a few decent power years, as I recall.

   59. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 09:03 PM (#2921013)
Walks, you’re right. A repeat of this season is out of the question. But what should they offer him? He’s going to get at least 4/40 from some team and has deserved staying with the Cubs. I loathe saying it, but the Cubs should offer around 5/55 for Dempster, shouldn’t they? He pretty much has to stay with the team.
   60. I can out-debate Joe Biden; Nieporent said so Posted: August 28, 2008 at 09:08 PM (#2921015)
This could be Demp's "2004 Chris Carpenter" season, where a middling veteran pitcher finally puts it all together and becomes the monster that his talent always projected he could be. Or it could be his "2003 Esteban Loaiza" season, where a middling veteran pitcher puts it all together for one year and then never achieves that again. I LOVE what Demp's doing this year, and I'm not saying that the former isn't possible, but honestly, we've seen the latter a lot more often.
   61. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2921016)
So, Cole Hamels. Pretty good, isn’t he? Still, Cubs, hitting back-to-back is your responsibility. Do! It!
   62. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 09:12 PM (#2921018)
He was at least competent the last couple of years. Sure, he was no Joe Borowski, but he was competent. One thing you can’t debate is that Dempster changed his approach. He looks like a <4.00 ERA pitcher to me, and Rothschild looks like a competent coach. Dunno.

I’m pretty sure that there is a website out there that makes Hamels look more awesome than Chuck Norris. Anyway. I have to go and sleep. Good luck Cubs!

Oh, yeah, last season when my friends were screaming for his head as a closer, I was defending him. Honestly, considering his stepping in as the closer in '05 when no one else was competent/healthy (R.I.P Chad Fox) enough to do it, his pretty good season last year, and what he's doing this year, he's been one of the huge Jim Hendry Successes.
   67. NTNgod Posted: August 28, 2008 at 09:15 PM (#2921025)
I don't think Soriano would have caught that, but he took one odd circular route to the ball.

I don't think it ended up in the ivy, or Weurth wouldn't have gone after it. But there is this weird little "ball-diameter-sized" space between the dirt of the track and the lip of the wall. Not the first time an outfielder has had trouble getting the ball out of there.
   78. Carl Spongberg Posted: August 28, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2921049)

I do NOT hear more boos for Soriano, do I? Any Cubs fan who would actually boo Soriano at this point is a stupid ############ who's beyond help. I know that the "middle-aged white guy Ryan-Hustle-Theriot dick-sucking club" hates Soriano, but, c'mon. Is he a butcher in left field? Yes. Is our offense DEMONSTRABLY WORSE when he's not in the lineup? YES.

These "fans" need to go #### themselves.

Irony, on the anniversary of "23-22".

THis moron better be bunting.
   83. Chris Dial Posted: August 28, 2008 at 09:43 PM (#2921059)
I guess that's why, but I wouldn't have done that.

Soriano kind of side-armed that throw to the plate. Wasn't even close.

Yea, not one of his best throws. Probably not a good idea to throw home either. Good thing neither trail runner advanced on it.

HOWRY?!? Sorry Dial, we're not winning this one if WHiP comes into a close game.

A homerun-prone reliever against a home-run hitting club with the wind blowing out?

He'd probably retire every guy he faced, since that's the way baseball seems to work.

This needs to be Demp's last batter. The plate's been dancing all night and we can't afford too much more damage.
   88. Chris Dial Posted: August 28, 2008 at 09:48 PM (#2921068)
Dempster shouldn't face Utley.

We should bring Eyre in he-

Oh.
   90. Chris Dial Posted: August 28, 2008 at 09:50 PM (#2921071)
That was poor managing.
   91. NTNgod Posted: August 28, 2008 at 09:53 PM (#2921073)
Dempster got lucky that Burrell hit that to the deep part. That was another crappy off-speed pitch.

In a vacuum, that's not a bad pitch to Utley: off the corner and away. With our defensive alignment playing him to pull, that's a HORRIBLE pitch. If he hits it, it's only going right through that wide-open SS hole.

I suppose a 3-run deficit isn't the end of the world with this offense. But it sure feels like a "drought" night.

Way to fight back offense.
   94. NTNgod Posted: August 28, 2008 at 09:58 PM (#2921077)
7 pitches for the 2-3-4 hitters? I don't think that was what Lou was hoping for, following the last half-inning.

Well, at least Lou doesn't think this game is lost yet. He's not bringing in Howry. Although Marshall is about 1 step up.

22 years later, Jim McMahon still gets massive cheers.

THAT COULD HAVE BEEN YOU, REX!!! All you had to do was squeeze out one more good/lucky game and you were set for life.

One of those sports quirks is that McMahon actually won as many Super Bowl rings as a Packer as he did a Bear.

I think McMahon is the Bears best alternative at QB. Which shows you how crappy I think they are going to be this year.
   99. NTNgod Posted: August 28, 2008 at 10:19 PM (#2921091)
At least Howry is getting fed the bottom of the order, and the game's already 4-1.

Hamels vs. Cubs so far this year: 2G- 15 IP- 1R- 6H- 2BB- 11K

That's against the UNDISPUTED best offense in the NL.

I think we've found our 2008 Cy Young winner.
