The Mets are 11-0 in Pelfrey's last 3 non-Marlins starts.

Obviously, I meant his last *11 non-Marlins starts.*

How concerned are you guys about Pelfrey's innings increase?
   5. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: September 05, 2008 at 04:01 PM (#2930264)
Reyes, ss
Murphy, lf
Wright, 3b
Delgado, 1b
Beltran, cf
Church, rf
Castillo, 2b
Schneider, c
Pelfrey, rhp

And they're skipping Niese. Four-man rotation for the next two weeks, effectively.

And the Phillies just announced the signing of Tad Iguchi. He'll be at Shea tomorrow. Ineligible for the playoffs, of course.

How concerned are you guys about Pelfrey's innings increase?

Not concerned at all for the regular season.

Tiny bit concerned for the post-season, if the Mets make it.

Somewhat concerned about mid-term and longer-term implications.

I really wish they had any other choice -- any other reasonable choice, that is. But they really don't, and since his overall innings total is just not that outlandish, I can't see seriously compromising the team's chance in the division race based ONLY on the increase in innings. Because that really is the only worrisome indicator. His pitch counts are actually quite reasonable.

Full speed ahead, and cross your fingers. I don't think it amounts to a practice that is unfair to Pelfrey or abusive of his future.

   9. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: September 05, 2008 at 04:50 PM (#2930369)
Yeah, there's no time to worry about Pelfrey now. He's shown no signs of fatigue and they just gotta roll with it.
   10. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:06 PM (#2930468)
I am not particularly worried about Pelfrey's short-term future. But will these innigs have an effect on him next season? Again, there is any nymber of reason Pelfrey could get hurt next year not just the innings but it'd suck pretty hard if he got hurt next year after emerging this year.
   11. Sam M. Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:06 PM (#2930469)
Put 'em own early, Mike. Get us off to a good start.
   12. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:06 PM (#2930470)
Wow. The game is not on TV here in Syracuse. This sucks.
   13. Sam M. Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:10 PM (#2930472)
But will these innigs have an effect on him next season?

I wonder how many total pitches he threw in 2007 v. how many total pitches he's thrown this year to get through those innings. He is so much more efficient this year, or at least he has been since the turn-around. By throwing strikes consistently, he is able to get through innings w/ fewer pitches. To me, if you look at the basic thesis about increased workload (don't increase it too much year-to-year) that Verducci put forward, but express it in total pitches instead of IP, I bet Pelfrey has more room to work with than you'd think looking just at the IP.
   14. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:11 PM (#2930473)
I just want to say this before the series started. This team is playing better now than at any other time during the Minaya era.
   15. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:11 PM (#2930475)
I'd disagree with that Russlan. When things were clicking in 2006, that team was unstoppable.
   16. Sam M. Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:12 PM (#2930477)
Great start, despite the 2-0 count to lead him off. Nice.

This team is playing better now than at any other time during the Minaya era.

How about the 10-game road trip in 2006 where they went 9-1, including a sweep of the Phillies?

   20. Sam M. Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:16 PM (#2930482)
You know, I know that Schneider has actually played better than I expected him to when Minaya traded for him. But I'm sorry, I just can't warm to him.

And that throw didn't help.

As much as I love what Murphy is doing, I don't want to get to excited. I remember Diaz's April 2005.

He is so much more efficient this year, or at least he has been since the turn-around. By throwing strikes consistently, he is able to get through innings w/ fewer pitches.

No question. In majors and minors combined, Pelfrey faced 690 batters in 2007. In 2008, he's faced 719 prior to the start of this game.

I don't see him as having labored a whole lot more this year than last year. He's averaging 102 pitches per start this year, which doesn't seem too outrageous.
   37. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2930506)

   40. Sam M. Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:32 PM (#2930511)
No question. In majors and minors combined, Pelfrey faced 690 batters in 2007. In 2008, he's faced 719 prior to the start of this game.

That's one excellent indication that the workload issue isn't captured all that well (or at least not completely) by the IP increase. It'd also be interesting to know the average number of pitches per hitter, but I doubt we have that data available for the minor league starts.

Like I said, if we had another good choice, giving Pelfrey a start or two off would be ideal. But we don't, and I'm not overly worried about it.
   41. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 05, 2008 at 07:32 PM (#2930512)

They had their shots . . . and didn't take them. Now I expect that Pelfrey is going to have to hold it right where it is, and we're going to need a big fly out of the blue. The kind Delgado has been specializing in lately, if I'm not mistaken.
   55. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 05, 2008 at 08:15 PM (#2930584)
Myers doesn't give up HR's anymore. He's the anti-Pedro. He's got something like a .10 HR/9 over the last 10 starts.
