Alright fellas. We started this thing and now that we're at the top, everyone is trying to knock us off. It's us versus them. Now we must protect this house!
   3. Karl from NY Posted: September 07, 2008 at 12:24 PM (#2931736)
Wow, thanks to that hurricane yesterday, I've got an avalanche of sports to watch today. Mets doubleheader, tennis semifinal and final, Nascar postponed from yesterday, and maybe some football in there too. At least the Giants courteously played a couple days ago to get out of that mix.
   4. Alan S Posted: September 07, 2008 at 12:36 PM (#2931743)
The rainout prevents me from being able to watch most of the epic Favre vs. Pennington showdown today. This certainly is about as loaded a day of sports as I can remember though. It'll be fun, especially if the Mets can take this game and make the night game a little less worrisome.
   5. Joshemy Posted: September 07, 2008 at 01:17 PM (#2931761)
Despite this awesome sports day, I unfortunately have a group meeting at 3 PM for one of my classes. So I'll be here for the late game.

The last Martinez/Moyers matchup was a disaster. Don't blow a 6 run lead today, please.

Is this Pedro's biggest start as a Met?
   8. Karl from NY Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:16 PM (#2931803)
Howie Rose said the first pitch as an 83 MPH fastball. This does not bode well for us...

He usually starts out slow.
   10. Alan S Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:17 PM (#2931807)
I think Pedro's velocity is much less important than how much movement and control of his breaking pitches he has.
   11. Sam M. Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:20 PM (#2931808)
That'll do, Pedro. Good breaking stuff, and excellent command of the fastball, even if the velocity sucked. I'll take that trade-off any time.
   12. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:21 PM (#2931809)
I think Pedro's velocity is much less important than how much movement and control of his breaking pitches he has.

It's really all about the curveball early. If he's sharp with that pitch, he doesn't have to use his fastball until he's loose and can throw it harder.
   13. Sam M. Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:24 PM (#2931811)
That's OK. Jose got ahead, then made Moyer throw strikes. Solid approach. Moyer just won the battle. If we get ahead 2-0 in enough counts, we'll be fine.
   14. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:33 PM (#2931821)
Church makes that play.
   15. Sam M. Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:33 PM (#2931823)
Pathetic. Tatis has to catch that ball.
   16. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:36 PM (#2931834)
Walk Ruiz?
   17. Sam M. Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:36 PM (#2931835)
That should have been the third out. You have to play good defense to win games like this.
   18. will Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:37 PM (#2931836)
Interesting that he gave Ruiz something to hit.....
   19. Sam M. Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:37 PM (#2931838)
Interesting that he has stopped throwing his curve ball this inning. Fastballs and change-ups.

That was a two-run piece of crap defending by Tatis.
   20. Sam M. Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:39 PM (#2931842)
I might also add that if one of Cohen's whipping boys had made that misplay (Milledge last year, for instance), he'd have been on him for three innings. Because it was Tatis, whom he loves, he made excuses for him ("The line drive hit right at an outfielder is a tough play . . . .").
   21. Chris Dial Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:40 PM (#2931845)
That was a two-run piece of crap defending by Tatis.
Correct. But Tatis didn't write his own name into RF. When you have a pitcher like Pedro going, you have to put your better defenders on teh field.
   22. Sam M. Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:42 PM (#2931847)
Correct. But Tatis didn't write his own name into RF.

Fair enough. You have to platoon for defense and offense, don't you?

Though with Hamels going and the Mets' bats ice cold, it feels like a tossup at best.

Boy, we really need to do something about second base.

Again.
   27. haplo53 Posted: September 07, 2008 at 02:50 PM (#2931862)
Mets look kinda jumpy when they swing the bats... which bodes very well for Moyer's continued success.

Exactly. He has just been way too anxious in most ABs. That was a classic example. His strike zone judgment has gone out the window.

Crappy outfield defense was a hallmark of last year's September sweep, too.

Not to say that I called it or anything, but Pedro's lack of fastball velocity is most certainly not OK.
   55. Sam M. Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:19 PM (#2931922)
And Pedro has suddenly fallen in love with his fastball, pitch after pitch. MIX IT UP.

Really, the next big game Pedro wins for the Mets will be his first.
   57. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:19 PM (#2931926)
If losing the division means Pedro's gone, it would almost be worth it.

Yeah, I love how the Mets are grinding out AB's knowing that victory is still possible.
   72. haplo53 Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:36 PM (#2931970)
Well, Santana's going to have to have the start of his season tonight. He'll probably need to pick up a couple base hits too.
   73. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:40 PM (#2931974)
Regarding Pedro:

Is he just not going to be able to reduce the numbers of homers he gives up to a respectable level anymore? He does have a 23/6 k/bb ratio in his last 29 IP including today but has allowed 5 homers which is basically the same rate he has the entire season when his k/bb ratio was mediocre.

His k/9 and k/bb ratio are still there for him to be a solid pitcher but the homers indicate he's done.
   74. Sam M. Posted: September 07, 2008 at 03:43 PM (#2931980)
For God's sake, Easley, would it KILL you to take a 3-1 pitch from a guy who virtually never throws a damn strike, when we need baserunners?

Just kill me now.

You know, this is getting quite absurd. That's 14 consecutive scoreless innings of shutout ball.

That had some float to it. The Mets have pretty much not caught a break on anything hit to the OF, but that one wasn't really one to complain about.

This is Heilman's first action in Septmeber.

I meant for the season. I have seen enough of Aaron Heilman's inability to locate a single one of his pitches for the season. He can't or won't throw strikes. And he can't or won't hit his spots within the zone.

Putting him in games is the absolute equivalent of putting Mota in games last year. If he gets into any high leverage situations this month, it will be an outrage.

Phillies got the best start of Brett Myers' season on Friday and probably the best of Moyer's season today.

I've said it a couple times, but the Mets need the best start of Santana's season tonight.

I'll settle for the second-best. As long as it's just about like the first.
   96. haplo53 Posted: September 07, 2008 at 04:34 PM (#2932081)
If his second-best start means he goes seven innings, it might not be enough.
   97. haplo53 Posted: September 07, 2008 at 04:36 PM (#2932085)
The Phils have had a better defense than the Mets all year long, and that distinction has really played out in this series thus far.

If his second-best start means he goes seven innings, it might not be enough.

If he only goes seven, it won't be Johan's second-best start of the year. He's had two CGs this year, and others where he's gone eight and pitched very well.

I guess. I was going by game score, for what that's worth; I think his second-best start by GS was the arizona game that the pen blew.
