Philadelphia Phillies (85-74) at Washington Nationals (81-78) - 7:05 PM EDT

PHI: Lidle (12-11, 4.65)
WAS: Hernandez (15-9, 3.95)

Philadelphia needs all three of these games, I just don’t think they can do it.

It would be nice, though.

...like me managing again would be nice, or the burning down of Ed Wade's house would be nice...

I just can't see this happening.

I have more faith in the Phillies sweeping Washington than I do in the Cubs taking two of the next three from Houston.

Larry, you managing again would be ####### ########. Sorry, but it's true. But a mad scientist that took the best characteristics of you and Cholly and created Muto-Manager would be on to something mighty good.

Burning down Wade's house wouldn't be nice, but driving him out of town with torhces and pitchforks would be.

Patrick,

I humbly disagree. As long as teams need a ****-kicking, there'll be jobs for fellas like me. And this is a good thing. Good for baseball and, heck, good for the country.

The world needs more ****-kickers. Otherwise the namby-pambies would run things and we'd all hold hands and sing and chant and stupid **** like that.

Your pal,
Larry

Like I said, Larry, the best of both.

Ditto.

Still have my playoff tickets waiting safely.

For whatever reason, the players didn't respond well to Larry, so I can understand the Phils wanting to go in a different direction. But it does seem like this group tends to whine more than most - now that Larry's gone as the whipping boy, they've shifted to complaining about the fans. We get it. We're tough fans. But they're the ones making millions of dollars. Maybe it's not out of the question to ask them to be a little more tough too, now that they've got the manager they wanted.

I'm a Cubs fan, so I'm inclined to agree, but there's a good chance Zambrano beats Pettite today. Jerome Williams vs. Clemens is probably a lost cause tomorrow, but the Cubs have hit Oswalt hard this year, and you never know when Maddux will go all 1995 on a team (as he did two starts ago).

Of course, these are the Phillies and Cubs we're talking about, so it just as likely the Astros will win the wildcard by 5 games.

The Nationals only need one win to get themselves a winning record in their inaugural season in D.C.

And if that happens, I'm sure that plenty of liars are going to come out of the woodwork and say that they knew before the season started that it was possible all along.

Those would be the same liars who said that they knew the Dodgers would finish fourth in the west.

Things like that happen. The Nats got excellent seasons from several starters and their bullpen.

That being said, Bowden pissed off a lot of good young talent, and that will bite them in the arse.

The stars go waltzing out in blue and red,
And arbitrary blackness gallops in:
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.

My Dad said that Ed Wade gave a good 30 minute interview last night with Macnow on WIP where he steadfastly defended himself and Charlie Manuel.

That twerp has got some guts.

Gelb, would you drive or fly down to Philly if the NLDS happened?

This season isn't over.

Drive. My mum said she'd come up here and get me. Only about a four hour drive.
