Continuing the Joe Smith talk...from Adam Rubin's blog:

… Mets insiders suggest third-round pick Joe Smith, a sidearm righthander promoted from Brooklyn to Binghamton at the same time Humber joined the Double-A team, could help the big-league club in September.
   2. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 06, 2006 at 10:46 AM (#2128988)
I just want to say how pleased I am with Jose Valentin's defense at second this season. Simply put, he's been tremendous in the field. It might not be surprising how much range he has shown considering his rep but I can't believe how well he turns the double play considering he has rarely played second.

I will be very glad when Cliff Floyd is a former Met. He is just too injury prone and unreliable to be a serious part of a post season push. Let him go play for a second division team where he can get injured to his heart's content.

I need Maine to strike out 17. Actually, 18 to win the category.

As much as I would love that, I highly doubt Maine can do it.

Cliff Floyd has said he expects to play tonight. We'll see.

SNY is reporting the Mets have signed David Wright to a 6-year, $55 million contract with an option for a seventh year.

SNY is reporting the Mets have signed David Wright to a 6-year, $55 million contract with an option for a seventh year.

As glad as I am that Wright is being locked up long term, can someone explain to me why the Mets wouldn't wait until next year to do this?
   8. Sam M. Posted: August 06, 2006 at 06:33 PM (#2129384)
can someone explain to me why the Mets wouldn't wait until next year to do this?

Why is that the right question, Banta? Of course they could have done that. For all I know, they might not have wanted to wait because they might have had tax reasons for wanting to pay out a signing bonus this year. Maybe they have budget expenses next year (related to the stadium???) that make it advantageous to lay out things this year from an accounting perspective. No clue.

Or maybe they just have a tremendous faith in David Wright and Jose Reyes, and these two deals are a tangible way of expressing that instead of just giving lip service to it. The Mets are saying these two kids are a huge part of the future of the organization. And they are saying to every other prospect in the organization that if they work their asses off, and conduct themselves like pros, and produce, they won't have to necessarily wait until 2012 or 2013 or some other date way the heck down the road to hit the big $$$ reward. Not a bad message to send a certain young man just handed the RF job (among others), I'd say.

It's a great way of doing business, if you have the right young players to do business with. Wright and Reyes, IMHO, are the right young players. Well done, Fred. Well done.
   9. AJM Posted: August 06, 2006 at 06:38 PM (#2129386)
They also might have saved themselves some money by doing it this year.
   10. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 06, 2006 at 07:00 PM (#2129406)
Great news. I don't particularly care if the Mets saved money wtr Wright. He's worth that and more.

Great news from down in the farm, too:

Fernando-mania reaches the FSL as the Future homered in his first AB.
Pelfrey wins in AAA debut. 5 IP 2 ER 2/5 bb/so
Gomez continues his hot streak with 2 more hits

And the most impressive of them all...Guerra's coming out party: 5 IP 1 ER 1/11 bb/so and he's not out of the game yet. Eight of the eleven strikeouts have been swinging. Felix who?
   11. JH (in DC) Posted: August 06, 2006 at 07:06 PM (#2129408)
Wright signing.

The extension calls for a $1.5 million signing bonus and salaries of $1 million next year, $5 million in 2008, $7.5 million in 2009, $10 million in 2010, $14 million in 2011 and $15 million in 2012. There is a $1 million buyout if the Mets do not exercise a $16 million option for the 2013.
   12. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt) Posted: August 06, 2006 at 07:11 PM (#2129411)
"I have wanted to be a life long Met and this is the first step in that direction," Wright said.

   13. Banta Posted: August 06, 2006 at 07:14 PM (#2129415)
I didn't mean that to sound like I'm second-guessing. I was just curious.
   14. Sam M. Posted: August 06, 2006 at 07:23 PM (#2129424)
So let's see. This deal is six years, $55M, right? OK, so how did I do in this thread in projecting a David Wright signing? Raskolnikov projected 8 years, $105M, and I thought that was too much, using this reasoning:

I'll just guess that with Wright, you're talking about something along the lines of $500,000 next year (Cabrera is making almost that this season), and then something like $6M, $8M, and $11M in arbitration. So you'd be talking $25.5M -- and I think that's pretty reasonable, if not conservative -- in his arb years, and then $79.5M for the following four years. That would be one hell of a gamble on his future, that's for sure; basically, you're agreeing right now to pay him around $20M a year for his first four post-FA years -- maybe a little less, assuming that there's some inflation in arbitration awards between now and then. But somewhere around $19-20M/year for those four years. Yikes.

I have to say, I'd be surprised if it would take quite that much to buy the next eight years of his future. That's a whole lot of security you're giving him, and as you point out, he'd still be hitting free agency with plenty of time to sign another huge deal if it turns out to be a below-market deal. I would think $15M/year for the post-FA years ought to be enough, although you might have to agree to buy only the first three years; he might decide he wants to see where the market is a bit earlier if he's locked in at $15M instead of nearly $20M.

So I wanted to buy him out for about $25.5M for his pre-arb and arb years, and then $15M/year thereafter. The Mets have bought out one pre-arb year, 3 arb years, and two FA years, for $55M. Under my proposal, those years would have cost . . . get this: $55.5M.

Hey, that's not bad. ;-)

   18. Grumbledook Posted: August 06, 2006 at 07:53 PM (#2129456)
I recall Omar Minaya being interviewed not too long ago, and the host asked about signing Reyes and Wright to long term contracts, and he said they were going to wait until the end of the season. I suppose it was more or less a boilerplate GM response, but I suppose you shouldn't believe everything you hear either.
   19. Raskolnikov Posted: August 06, 2006 at 07:55 PM (#2129457)
So let's see. This deal is six years, $55M, right? OK, so how did I do in this thread in projecting a David Wright signing? Raskolnikov projected 8 years, $105M, and I thought that was too much, using this reasoning:

I freely admit that I overestimated what it would take to get the extensions done. But again I noted in the original thread that I was pulling those numbers out of my external anal sphincter and I was assuming a moral hazard (the money is a figment of my imagination and I am not an unbiased bystander) while Omar is assuming the actual risk. Still, I would like to take credit for proposing the proactive initiative of extending these two cornerstones before they got into their arbitration years.

And Sam, I have no doubt about this - Fernando is a treasure. This kid is special. Dare I say what I am about to say? Not yet, but soon.

More than anyone else, I'm hoping that Maine pitchs well the rest of the season. I want him to make it obvious that he should be starting in the playoffs instead of Trachsel, despite the fact the latter is the unquestioned ace of the New York Mets.
   64. AJM Posted: August 06, 2006 at 08:35 PM (#2129527)

   65. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 06, 2006 at 08:37 PM (#2129530)
I heard an interview with Omar the other day, and in it, he mentioned that Maine and not Julio was the main guy in the Benson deal. He said that he thought Maine was better than John Patterson when he acquired him. Obviously, its really hard to believe that's true considering Lima got starts before him, but you have to be intrigued by the possibility of Maine actually becoming more than a fifth starter. If the playoffs started right now, would he be our third starter?

Here's a question. I wonder if, while the Mets were wrapping up Reyes's deal, they spoke with him and/or his agent to give him a head's up that the deal was in the works with Wright, and that it was for significantly more dollars. Just in case -- even though I think it's unlikely, given how close the two of them are -- it might be seen by Reyes as blindsiding him for Wright to sign a bigger deal less than a week after his contract is signed. Paying attention to those possible clubhouse issues before they might even begin to fester is something a smart club does.

Dookie is the third starter right now. He's been solid of late and he has the postseason pedigree. Jeremy and I were discussing the possible playoff roster yesterday in the mezzanine and I posed the question, would Trachsel even make the Division Series roster right now? I'd take 10 pitchers:

Pedro
Glavine
El Duque
Maine
Oliver
Bradford
Feliciano
Kool-Aid
Heilman
Wagner

In a five-game series, 10 is plenty. With 15 position players, Omar and Willie can do some real cool things, like adding Fonzie, and someone like IPOR, who could serve strictly as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement.

You know, I think Chris should lay off being so hostile to the rest of us (as I think I made pretty clear the other night). I wasn't around yesterday to chat, but reading the chatter afterwards, he was the model of civility (with nary a mention of Trachsel, IIRC). In light of that, it probably wouldn't hurt to reciprocate, in the interest of peace and harmony, and see if he has decided to let it go.

I was about to post that "that was the Endy Chavez we Phillies fans grew to know and hate"- but it's not accurate. He would've had to flown out to the track or flail wildly at three balls in the dirt, with a 3-0 count and the bases juiced.

He's been solid of late and he has the postseason pedigree.

Am I the only one who thinks that latter point is just BS? I know the Mets brass will put huge stock in that, so I just accept it. But if I thought Pelfrey, for example, was a better bet to pitch a good game on August 15th than El Duque, then I'd say he's a better bet to pitch a good game on October 10th, too.

OK, that's an exaggeration. I'd use it as a tie-breaker, and go with the guy who has shown he can handle the pressure. But only if it's very close otherwise. When El Duque was sucking wind, we were hearing about his "postseason pedigree," and it just made me cringe.

Kool-Aid

I wonder if you could make a case to leave off Kool-Aid™ for Pelfrey in the pen. Pelfrey is more likely to give you two innings (or more) if you need them, and that pen could sure use a power arm from the right side. Hell, it could use a power arm other than Wagner, period.

See, Bonnie Bernstein asked my question!

I listened to that interview OFF. I don't remember Minaya saying that he thought Maine was better than Patterson. I thought he said Maine reminded him of Patterson.

Nope. He did say Maine was better than Patterson when he acquired him from AZ. I'm positive.

you can't argue with aura and mystique.

Because the bouncer will throw you out of the club?

"What are you looking to do before the August 31st deadline?"

"I'm always looking at pitching, but also position players."

Nice dodge Omar!

I wonder if you could make a case to leave off Kool-Aid™ for Pelfrey in the pen. Pelfrey is more likely to give you two innings (or more) if you need them, and that pen could sure use a power arm from the right side. Hell, it could use a power arm other than Wagner, period.

The only way you can make that case is if the Mets kept Pelfrey up on the big club and moved him to the pen. I think it could work well, giving him a month to get used to short relief and develop the mentality. They sent him down everyone's drinking the Kool-Aid, so he's a lock.

Is Jose anywhere close to 200 hits?
   92. Russlan thinks Jose Reyes pops up too much Posted: August 06, 2006 at 08:53 PM (#2129575)
Jose is on pace for 190+ hits this season. He is going to have to pick it up a little bit to get to 200.

131, OFF.

131 hits for Reyes, on pace for 197.

Kool-Aid off the postseason roster? That's crazy talk.

If Kool Aid is not on the playoff roster, who's going to give up the 10th inning tying grand slam to Chipper Jones that sets up for Wright's walk off HR in the bottom of the inning that sends the Mets to the World Series?

What does Favorite Toy say about his odds of 3000?

Okay, so the final pitching spot could come down to:

Kool-Aid
Trachsel
Pelfrey
Ring
Bannister
Owens/Ring/Joe Smith?

I think it could depend on who they play in the first round. If the other team has got some lefties, maybe Ring makes it. I'm curious to see what Ring does for the rest of the year at the MLB level.

Let's see how he does for the next seven weeks, shall we?

Geez, I'm starting to sound like OFF . . . .

That can't happen. Literally.
