Game Chatter — Where Thinking Fans Discuss Today's Games Monday, July 03, 2006PIT (28-55) at NYM (48-33) - 7:10 PM EDTPIT: Maholm (2-7, 4.97) Pedro will miss a start, and is probably on the shelf until after the ASG. He may only make 30-33 starts this sea…oh, they all will. Darren Oliver gets the nod today - and as a pitcher, he can really hit. |

Loot and pillage and lots of runs please.
why is the pittsburgh franchise called the Pirates?
####### Mets.
I believe last night could be the 2006 Mets' version of June 5, 1999. Reeling from their eighth straight loss, handed to them by the Yankees, GM Steve Phillips fired Bob Apodaca, Randy Niemann and Tom Robson. At the time, the Mets were 27-28, in third place and six games back.
"If we are not better in the next 55 games, then I should not be manager," Valentine said. "I can't see it lasting much beyond that."
...
"It's kind of frustrating," John Franco said. "We feel we have a good team, but we just don't feel we're getting it done."
The next day, the Mets snapped Roger Clemens' 20-game win streak.
Instead of coaches, in 2006 it is players. As a result of the loss last night and the recent tailspin, I think several roster moves are in the making. Obviously, there are some changes needed. It began this afternoon with Omar going against Willie "Fast Hands" Randolph and tabbing Maine. Soler is gone and won't be back this year, justly so. Bell will follow him in the coming days and after him, who knows? The team has loads of young talent (Keppinger, Owens, Pelfrey?) in the minors, potentially capable of having Melvin Mora 1999-type impact on this season.
The difference between 1999 and 2006 is the Mets have room to play around with the roster configuration. I have a strong feeling neither Trachsel nor El Duque will be around come October.
Mustacho with the range.
Now they're explaining his yelling at ARod. Quit defending this loser!
WILLIE RANDOLPH MAKES THE SAME MISTAKE TWO NIGHTS IN A ROW!
This is what happens when you throw 100 pitches in 5 innings.
And of course Willie removes the guy too late.
It happened too fast.
Darling just said it happens so fast for a young pitcher. It's official.
Art Howe : We battled :: Willie Randolph : It happened so fast.
Come on David, pick them up!
Kazmir 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K
Dang it, offense. Losing to the Pirates is not so acceptable.
Not to pour salt on the wound or anything.
As I mentioned in the Sunday chatter yesterday, the scores against the Tigers the series before this one:
L 7-6
W 9-2
L 9-8
They hung with the team with the best record in baseball, so it's not completely surprising they're doing OK tonight.
Brutal town, Chad. You're reminding me of another crappy sidearmer, Steve Reed, who... ack... awk... erk.. Bay... (collapse).
I was going to ask if the Pirates bullpen was any good, but it doesn't matter now.
He gets run over by an 18-wheeler when leaving the team hotel?
He blows his arm out forever during his warmup pitches?
He gets stabbed by an angry ex-girlfriend running out of the stands?
