So b/c of the rainout, the Mets are skipping Figueroa one time through the rotation so that Santana can pitch Sunday at Arizona. I would've skipped Pelfrey instead.

Pelfrey's pretty good at getting groundballs and against righthanders. He has a better shot against Arizona.

BTW, Claudio Vargas pitched yesterday in A-ball and had a nice outing. Castro played in that game as well. Figueroa might only make one more start for the Mets before he is replaced.
   4. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 05:38 PM (#2762936)
Why would the Mets replace Figueroa? Vargas is a garbage pitcher (one start at A ball isn't going to change that) and Pelfrey still can't pitch. It'd be the height of idiocy for the Mets to send him to AAA for any of those two buffoons.

Figueroa's even better against righties so far this year. Quite frankly, he's a better pitcher than Pelfrey right now. But I suppose the more important point is that Figueroa is better suited for the pen while he sits out a start.

Figueroa isn't very good either, for all his good work and fluckishly low HR/9 rate he has an ERA+ of 91. Vargas has pitched pretty well the last two years despite playing for poor defensive teams and ballparks that are not really good fits for him. He's a better bet than Figueroa. I think he'll do well as a Met.

Pelfrey probably should be in AAA, refining his secondary pitches, so I'd probably keep Figgy in the rotation but wouldn't be upset if the Mets went with Pelfrey.

Alou's MRI revealed no major damage and he could be in the lineup Friday. Smoltz went on the DL.

That was a nice bunt.

You know what's funny? Castillo is probably playing about as well as we could expect from him and he's been getting a lot of hate.
   11. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:22 PM (#2763028)
That wasn't so nice.

Paulino threw out a runner? What?!

You know what's funny? Castillo is probably playing about as well as we could expect from him and he's been getting a lot of hate.

Eh, I think that's before he went 8 for his last 18, raising his average 52 points. But I guess we do forget that it's still April.
   14. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:24 PM (#2763034)
Ooh, Snell is looking good here.
   15. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:25 PM (#2763037)
I think Wright is going to top 100 walks this season.
   16. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:25 PM (#2763038)
Except for the walk of course.
   17. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:28 PM (#2763046)
Snell's the one who basically told the coaching staff to go #### themselves, right?
   18. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:32 PM (#2763062)
I don't remember anything specific of that nature, but I wouldn't be surprised at all. Snell is a little hotheaded, and I can totally imagine Jeff Andrews trying to tell him to pitch to contact or something.
   19. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:32 PM (#2763063)
Er, that should read Jim Colborn. Jeff Andrews is the new pitching coach who hasn't been awful as far as I can tell.
   20. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:36 PM (#2763069)
Snell wears 45 because Pedro Martinez was his favorite pitcher.

How has Paulino lasted this long?
   22. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:41 PM (#2763074)
Snell sucks against lefties. This could get ugly tonight...

Wait, y'all have Raul Casanova? And are starting him?!

Dammit.

Our two top catchers are hurt. You are going to see Gustavo Molina tomorrow.
   26. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:47 PM (#2763081)
Wait, y'all have Raul Casanova? And are starting him?!

Hey, he's better than DiFelice, Stinett, and Alomar.
   27. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:51 PM (#2763087)
Glavine being Glavine. Left the bases loaded in the first, left two men on in the second.
   28. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:53 PM (#2763092)
Oh, that would explain it. I thought someone was finally giving him a real shot, 8 years too late, but it just didn't compute that it would be the Mets.
   29. AJM Misses Brodeur Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2763101)
Santana should hit second.
   30. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2763102)
I hope that the Mets can keep Casanova when the other catchers get healthy. He is certainly a capable backup.
   31. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 07:56 PM (#2763103)
Haha, Santana is 4-14 with 3 doubles. That's awesome.

   41. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 08:08 PM (#2763137)
Santana has had a ridiculously high HR/FB percentage the last two years. It doesn't seem sustainable statistically, but every homer I've seen off him has been absolutely crushed...

The Pirates are making Santana work.

I know! It's weird to me too.
   44. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 08:18 PM (#2763171)
The Mets are drawing their fair share of walks but are not hitting for any power so far this season.
   45. Chris Dial Posted: April 29, 2008 at 08:19 PM (#2763173)
I don't think the Pirates are making him work so much as swinging and missing a lot - maybe that's their plan.

   51. Chris Dial Posted: April 29, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2763183)
That was nice. Church hasn't really gotten a chance to play everyday, and he's going to be terrific, defensively and offensively.
   52. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2763186)
Snell is falling behind a lot. He has good stuff so he can do that a little bit.
   53. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2763191)
That was nice. Church hasn't really gotten a chance to play everyday, and he's going to be terrific, defensively and offensively.

If Church can be an .825-.850 OPS hitter, he should be a really good player overall. His ZR in rightfield has been outstanding and that's a career trend. He is respectable in CF, and good in LF, but awesome in right.
   54. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 08:32 PM (#2763210)
Bunt with Santana?
   55. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 08:34 PM (#2763213)
Snell is falling behind a lot. He has good stuff so he can do that a little bit.

But not as much as he's been doing. He also needs to get back to striking out hitters; I don't know what's up with that this year.

   66. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 08:48 PM (#2763264)
Is it just me, or do most of the teams that have struggled a lot in recent years tend have really bad defenses. The Marlins, the Rays, the Pirates, etc.
   67. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 08:51 PM (#2763279)
I think that was a ball.
   68. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 08:52 PM (#2763282)
The Pirates defense actually wasn't all that terrible last year IIRC in terms of defensive efficiency, but the offense was awful. Jack Wilson missing time has hurt the defense a lot; the backup shortstops have made something like 10 errors.
   69. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 08:57 PM (#2763301)
Yeah, I'd be afraid of McLouth too.
   70. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2763311)
Can't help but notice they didn't bother showing the overhead view on that called third strike to Gomez.
   71. Bob Koo Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:02 PM (#2763315)
Wow, just saw the 3-2 pitch to Church. That wasn't even close. That's horrible.
   72. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:06 PM (#2763331)
I do not know about this. I might have used Smith here.
   73. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:08 PM (#2763338)
I would consider pinch hitting a pitcher for LaRoche.
   74. Chris Dial Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:08 PM (#2763344)
This is where we use Schoeneweis.
   75. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2763348)
Can Pedro II get LaRoche? He's been awfully wild to start the season.

Anyone can get LaRoche. He's been just awful to start the season (as he is every year).
   77. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2763361)

Nice swing, LaRoche.
   79. Chris Dial Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:15 PM (#2763377)
Well, the reason I use SS is because Willie is too dumb to leave Pedro II in for his AB. It's just poor bullpen management (because PEdro II can pitch to RHBs and SS cannot).

I don't mind using Easley but there's certainly an argument that you can't be using 3 or 4 relievers every inning.
   83. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2763408)
Apparently, The Gut says to use Heilman in the 7th so he can gain some confidence.

Feh.
   84. Chris Dial Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2763411)
So, Lassus, got an excuse for this appearance from Heilman?
   85. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:22 PM (#2763416)
95 mph from Heilman?
   86. Anthropophagus Mets Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2763418)
OH YES, BRING THEE SCHOENEWEIS
   87. Bob Koo Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2763419)
TAKE HIM OUT! Don't use Heilman in a close game. Geez, it was so obvious that Smith was the right choice here.
   88. Chris Dial Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2763422)
Not in a 2-run game. How anyone can defend these moves is just beyond me.
   89. Chris Dial Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:24 PM (#2763424)
Prediction - Bunt, HEilman throws it away at third.
   90. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:24 PM (#2763425)
Heilman is throwing hard, FWIW.

Based on the two baserunners, it's not worth ####.

Jeez, Casanova. Catch the ball.
   93. Russlan is an overhyped Met BTFer Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:29 PM (#2763465)
Heilman is pretty much useless right now.
   94. Chris Dial Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2763469)
See, this is why Willie is such a bad manager. Pedro II can pitch to all hitters, but Wilie uses him in a LOOGY situ where he's due to hit, and lifts him. Now he has SS come in with just 1 out, and only 1 LHB in the next 5 hitters. So SS has to get a DP, or he has to pitch to Gomez, and we're looking at trouble.

It's not even that difficult - he's just dumb as dirt.
   95. Chris Dial Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2763479)
Prediction - Gomez weakass single.
