Yankees are Even-6 favorites, and will be favored in all 3 games.
   2. RB in NYC (Now with Jet Lag!) Posted: April 28, 2007 at 12:28 PM (#2348345)
The conclusion is that it is time to stop the retreat. Not a single step back! This should be our slogan from now.
   3. Robert Machemer Posted: April 28, 2007 at 12:43 PM (#2348362)
The way the rivalry has gone in recent years, despite the apparent mismatch in starting pitchers, the game will be a close one.
   4. Darren Posted: April 28, 2007 at 12:48 PM (#2348367)
Next two games are house money for the Sox. I was only hoping for at least one win this weekend.
   5. bebop Posted: April 28, 2007 at 01:09 PM (#2348384)
If the Yankees are favored that's gotta be one of the silliest lines ever. Is Rasner on the DL? And if not isn't he a less bad option then Karstens?
   6. bebop Posted: April 28, 2007 at 01:31 PM (#2348394)
Men K only trails Vlad by 230 points in the race for the AL batting tittle
   7. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 01:40 PM (#2348402)
Bet on the Sox then, Dead Cat, sir. These sharpie types don't go broke making these lines.
   8. Cowboy Popup Posted: April 28, 2007 at 02:17 PM (#2348421)
I so dislike seeing Tim Wakefield pitch against the Yankees.
   9. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 02:22 PM (#2348424)
Wake's 9-13 against the Yankees, with a 4.60 ERA.

It doesn't make any sense for the Yankees to be favored with Karstens pitching, but OK.
   11. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 02:29 PM (#2348431)
See #7, Biff-man.
   12. PJ Martinez Posted: April 28, 2007 at 02:47 PM (#2348440)
"Wake's 9-13 against the Yankees, with a 4.60 ERA."

That's surprising. What about postseason? I recall that he won game 1 of the 2003 ALCS. Then he had to save Boston's ass in 2004 in the blowout. Somehow, though, he has a reputation as a Yankee killer. How did that happen?
   13. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 02:49 PM (#2348442)
Two good starts in the 2003 ALCS.
   14. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 02:53 PM (#2348444)
Lost in all the wirling clutter of Torre's head's on the block rumors, etc., is the indisputable fact that Mike Timlin notched a swing and miss last night.
   15. PJ Martinez Posted: April 28, 2007 at 03:08 PM (#2348446)
Against A-Rod no less. And it was a pretty big swing-and-miss, too-- it looked to me that A-Rod was thinking fastball and got something offspeed.
   16. Joe C isn't Posted: April 28, 2007 at 03:12 PM (#2348447)
Well, 9-13 is no good, but a 4.60 against the Yankee offenses of the last dozen years is solid enough.
   17. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 03:16 PM (#2348448)
It was either the low velocity splitty or a decent diving slider, PJM.

Is Wakefield a flyball pitcher? He is right? If not, illuminate me.
   18. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 28, 2007 at 03:19 PM (#2348449)
See #7, Biff-man.

I would if I had money to bet.
   19. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 03:24 PM (#2348450)
Sox are leading the AL in OPB.

It doesn't make any sense for the Yankees to be favored with Karstens pitching, but OK.

The difference in offenses is pretty sizable on the road; I think this game is probably very even.
   22. bibigon Posted: April 28, 2007 at 03:50 PM (#2348455)
Bodog has the line at -119 Yankees or +109 Red Sox, so yeah, they have it a Yankee edge. Tradesports is a bit more even at 108 and 104, but still with a Yankee edge.
   23. PJ Martinez Posted: April 28, 2007 at 03:55 PM (#2348456)
Is Karstens the youngest-looking player in baseball?
   24. bibigon Posted: April 28, 2007 at 03:56 PM (#2348457)
It is time to make the Yankees pay for what they've done. Do it.
   25. PJ Martinez Posted: April 28, 2007 at 03:57 PM (#2348458)
Ouch. Hope he's okay.
   26. 2 Balls on Clemente Posted: April 28, 2007 at 03:57 PM (#2348459)

Ouch. Hope he's okay.

What happened?
   28. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 28, 2007 at 03:58 PM (#2348461)
The Yankees are cursed this year.
   29. bebop Posted: April 28, 2007 at 03:58 PM (#2348462)
Oh I get it-the Sox are 5/7 in runs over the Yanks. If you bet the Sox you have to lay 7 runs.
   30. 2 Balls on Clemente Posted: April 28, 2007 at 03:59 PM (#2348463)
Line drive off of Karstens' leg on the first pitch.
   31. The Clarence Thomas of BTF (scott) Posted: April 28, 2007 at 03:59 PM (#2348464)
huh. i hope he's alright.

that absolutely sucks.
   32. Chip Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:00 PM (#2348465)
When they replayed the video it sure sounded like ball hitting bone. I can't believe they're leaving him out there without even pulling the uni up to examine it, no matter what he says about it.

Is there any tradition on earth stupider than the chanting of players names at Yankee Stadium?
   34. PJ Martinez Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:03 PM (#2348467)
So, after giving up a hit to Youkilis, he's coming out? Weird. Maybe they saw something.

Igawa time.

   36. Fly's New Handle Was Too Long, But Clever Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:04 PM (#2348469)
Well...this can't bode well for the Yankee bullpen today and tomorrow.
   37. bibigon Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:04 PM (#2348470)
Torre really does have a quick hook...
   38. PJ Martinez Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:04 PM (#2348472)
"Is there any tradition on earth stupider than the chanting of players names at Yankee Stadium?"

I don't know, I think fan-player interaction is kind of nice, though I admit there's also something very lame about it. I'm ambivalent.
   39. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:04 PM (#2348473)
This whole thing could turn out to be a blessing for the NYY's.

Igawa coming in. Fox, please, take it easy on the close-ups, OK?
   40. bibigon Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:06 PM (#2348475)
I don't know, I think fan-player interaction is kind of nice, though I admit there's also something very lame about it. I'm ambivalent.

It's kind of lame, but I've gotta say, I like it. It adds a nice feel to the game when you're there. I think it's worth the lameness.
   41. chris p Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:07 PM (#2348476)
looks like karstens had hte same sort of injury that dinardo and sterns had.
   42. jim in providence Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:07 PM (#2348477)
Igawa pitches wearing sunglasses?
   43. The Clarence Thomas of BTF (scott) Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:07 PM (#2348478)
ok, so if we knock igawa out by the 5th inning... who do we get?

   48. Fly's New Handle Was Too Long, But Clever Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:11 PM (#2348483)
The Igawa/Sunglasses thing has gotten a lot of coverage over at uniwatchblog.com

Apparently he's so used to pitching in domes, he can't handle daylight and wears those glasses.

oh imissed the shot he took off the leg. and i wasn't like he was limping.

so you're saying ... he might be a vampire?
   52. Fly's New Handle Was Too Long, But Clever Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:16 PM (#2348488)
I think "might" is a little more cautious than I'd have stated it.

I think it's virtually a guarantee that Kei Igawa is a vampire.
   53. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:17 PM (#2348489)
Starting off with a wasted inning like that does not bode well.
   54. Cowboy Popup Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:17 PM (#2348490)
K Igawa!
   55. The Clarence Thomas of BTF (scott) Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:18 PM (#2348491)
ugh. you simply can't get the bases juiced like that and then not convert.
   56. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:19 PM (#2348492)
Igawa was serving up some very hittable pitches, and the Sox just missed them. Drew really is struggling.
   57. cic Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:20 PM (#2348493)
well the bases weren't ever juiced, per say.
   58. PJ Martinez Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:20 PM (#2348494)
Bases were never juiced. (Doesn't juiced = loaded?)
   59. Fly's New Handle Was Too Long, But Clever Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:21 PM (#2348495)
What is wrong with Lowell's glove?
   60. PJ Martinez Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:21 PM (#2348496)
Error? Another one?
   61. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:22 PM (#2348497)
Lowell has the fielding yips, its in his head for sure now. Damn.
   62. PJ Martinez Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:22 PM (#2348498)
Bad throw from Mirabelli. A better throw has him, I think.
   63. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:23 PM (#2348499)
That was a tough play to make.
   64. PJ Martinez Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:25 PM (#2348500)
That second pitch was strike two to A-Rod. Has Froemming got a Runge-esque zone?
   65. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:25 PM (#2348501)
The 0-1 to Arod was miss-called.
   66. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:26 PM (#2348502)
Wake will walk him. I hate Wake games.
   67. PJ Martinez Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:27 PM (#2348504)
Mirabelli made up for it there. Not that that was a tough throw-out or anything.
   68. plink Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:28 PM (#2348505)
Reasonable 2nd pitch call - Mirabelli framed it *real* well. Nice throw to 3rd, too.
   69. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:28 PM (#2348506)
Igawa should be fine, if his problem has been getting the ball up, that seems totally fixable.
   70. Curse of the Graffanino (dfan) Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:29 PM (#2348507)
I like how that sign was asking A-Rod to hit his "fifthteenth homer".
   71. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:31 PM (#2348508)
Has Froemming got a Runge-esque zone?

Bruce is one of the last dinosaurs. My expectations of him are low.

I saw him miss a half inning late in a game I attended last year. I had never seen that before. Rest room visit, I assumed.
   72. Chip Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:31 PM (#2348509)
I can see Igawa will now give the Red Sox the "Chacin Junkballing Lefties" treatment.
   73. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:31 PM (#2348510)
Did both runners go on the play that Jeter got nailed at 3rd? I didn't see the guy on first going on the replay...
   74. Hey, it's what Johan uses (Matt) Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:32 PM (#2348511)
Are the Yankees really going to fire Torre if they are swept?
   75. PJ Martinez Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:32 PM (#2348512)
I can't completely rule it out of my mind that Mirabelli threw that bat at A-Rod on purpose.
   76. The Clarence Thomas of BTF (scott) Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:32 PM (#2348513)
hahaha. run a-rod run!

3-2 "fastball" please.
   83. PJ Martinez Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:43 PM (#2348521)
Again, could have had him.
   84. jim in providence Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:43 PM (#2348522)
I was surprised to learn that Wake gets his fastball up to 80 mph (according to Fox). Hard to imagine with that delivery.
   85. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:44 PM (#2348523)
Walks, stolen bases all over the place. I'm so done with the knuckler.

   88. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:44 PM (#2348526)
And of course the passed ball, from the specialty out machine.
   89. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:46 PM (#2348527)
Wake's fastball is 78, the Fox gun is fast.
   90. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:47 PM (#2348528)
Wake needs to get this big out.
   91. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:49 PM (#2348529)
And Wake bears down and gets the big out.

   94. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 04:56 PM (#2348533)
"Why don't you like Wakefield, tfbg9?"

I like him as a man just fine, in fact I admire him, I've just become aggravated by the whole knuckler thing and all its attendant annoyances-passed balls, out of nowhere fits of wildness, Doug Mirabelli.
   95. tfbg9 Posted: April 28, 2007 at 05:00 PM (#2348535)
I also think, or have developed the impressiion-maybe somebody can show me a stat that indicates otherwise, that since the knuckler is such a delicate, "feel" kind of thing, that Wake is prone to more than his share of failures in spots where he might be thinking too much-the postseason, tight games in the 8th inning, etc.

His winning percentage seems a bit low...I dunno.
