I'm really looking forward to this game. I'm dying to get a good lok at Matsusaka's stuff.

"I'm really looking forward to this game."

Understatement of the young season.

First, my prof is sick and class is cancelled.
Next, the Jays game gets snowed out. Rogers Sportsnet announces that this game will be shown instead of the Jays game.
This is shaping up to be the greatest day of my life.

Anyone heard of this Matsuzaka guy? I can't seem to find any minor league stats on him.

I see the patented Buddy Bell Weekday Day Game Lineup is in full effect. Sweeney out. Grudz out. Reggie out (that's actually a good thing). I'm convinced Reggie is a vampire as much as Buddy sat him in day games last year.

Didn't we just have a day off? Do Sweeney and Grudz really need days off already?
   5. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:01 PM (#2326032)
Huzzah! The game is indeed on in KC.

ESPN Classic is showing an old "This Week in Baseball". That's awesome. I wish they'd show more of that, but I understand rodeo and bowling fans need to get their fix on ESPN Classic.

Buddy is conserving his veteran presence.
   7. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:06 PM (#2326037)
I wish I could watch this game.
   8. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:10 PM (#2326045)
At this point, it wouldn't surprise me to see Zack toss a complete game shutout and it wouldn't surprise if me if he gave up six runs in the first, took off all his clothes and jumped in the fountains.
   9. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:12 PM (#2326048)
I am pulling for Zack and the Royals in this game!

lets go Greinke!
   10. tfbg9 Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:13 PM (#2326051)
Hey everybody!
   11. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:14 PM (#2326054)
Thats a small strike zone
   12. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:15 PM (#2326058)
YEA BABY!
   13. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:16 PM (#2326059)
Nice K. Zack was threading that outside corner.
   14. Sean McNally Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:17 PM (#2326061)
Teahen plays RF like a corner infielder.
   15. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:17 PM (#2326062)
Teahen looked pretty lost there.
   16. kevin Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:18 PM (#2326064)
Manny flashing some oppo field power there.
   17. Sean McNally Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:19 PM (#2326065)
Not a bad inning by Greinke there.
   18. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:19 PM (#2326066)
Looks like Greinke's getting the outside corner.
   19. kevin Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:20 PM (#2326067)
It's ABs like that that probably turn off the fans on Drew. That was a strike all the way.
   20. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:21 PM (#2326069)
Zack seems to have good command. Even the Manny double was Manny late on a fastball and just having the power to drive it deep. A better RF might have even made the play.

Encouraging sign.

There are about 15 photographers behind homeplate taking pictures of Dice K warming up.
   21. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:21 PM (#2326070)
Oh well. This is following the same script. Lets see if Greinke follows the steps of Gil GaMeche
   22. Padgett Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:22 PM (#2326071)
There's pretty much no chance Extra Innings is going to kick in mid-game, is there?
   23. kevin Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:23 PM (#2326072)
Nice snap on his pitches so far.
   24. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:23 PM (#2326073)

   33. Sean McNally Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:29 PM (#2326087)
No problem... Its in the 775-780 range on Comcast here in DC.

No, wait its OK!
   38. PJ Martinez Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:31 PM (#2326095)
"Seriously... throw the ball. Stop stalling."

The guy works slow, right? Hardly unusual in this league.
   39. Sean McNally Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:31 PM (#2326096)
What's Japanese for "throw the fecking ball," anybody know?
   40. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:32 PM (#2326100)
Dayton Moore, please trade Emil Brown to Baltimore. Thank you.

No I'm blowing off some story work here at the paper. Good thing its not deadline day, er what, it is... oops.
   43. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:35 PM (#2326106)
I am surprised Varitek caught up with that

Zack is really getting that outside corner. The ump must hate the cold.
   46. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:38 PM (#2326113)
Greinke looking good

but then , he was pitching to Crisp
   47. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:40 PM (#2326116)
The Royals announcing crew just referred to Mark Bellhorn as "popular in Boston". Which Boston are they referring to? It can't be Boston, MA.
   48. kevin Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:41 PM (#2326117)
Biff's hating of Bellhorn extends all the way to KC.
   49. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:42 PM (#2326118)
One of these two men will be Rookie of the Year.
   50. PJ Martinez Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:42 PM (#2326119)
I bet Bellhorn is popular again.
   51. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:43 PM (#2326120)
Matsuzaka wins the first battle between the ROTY candidates.
   52. Sean McNally Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:43 PM (#2326121)
The Royals announcers just called Beckett one of the best pitchers in the AL... don't guys who get called "best pitchers" throw more than 50% of their pitches for strikes?
   53. PJ Martinez Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:43 PM (#2326122)
You are speaking of Pedroia and Matsuzaka, I assume?
   54. PJ Martinez Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:44 PM (#2326123)
Pitchers with, what, 1.8 ERAs get that kind of praise, I think.
   55. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:44 PM (#2326124)
The Royals announcers just called Beckett one of the best pitchers in the AL... don't guys who get called "best pitchers" throw more than 50% of their pitches for strikes?

They see pitchers like Elarton and Odalis Perez and Mark Redman. Beckett is an ace, hell yeah!

I don't think a fan of a team that started Carl Pavano on Opening Day is allowed to say things like this.
   57. PJ Martinez Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:46 PM (#2326130)
Deep fly, line out... are they hitting him hard this inning?
   58. Padgett Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:46 PM (#2326132)
Remember when people thought Dice-K was going to be hitting the upper nineties?
   59. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:46 PM (#2326133)
The Royals plate discipline this year seems to be improved. Except for Emil of course. He'll swing at anything within three feet of the plate.

Hope this improvement keeps up. Schill and Beckett both threw a lot of pitches early.
   60. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:47 PM (#2326134)
Glowned.
   61. kevin Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:47 PM (#2326135)
That was a nice inning. If he keeps this up, he'll justify the #1 designation.
   62. tfbg9 Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:47 PM (#2326137)
First K! NIIIICE!
   63. Nick Warino Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:47 PM (#2326140)
Dice-K looked good in that at-bat. He biggest problem so far is that he simply isn't locating his pitching very well.
   64. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:48 PM (#2326142)
Deep fly, line out... are they hitting him hard this inning?

Gordon drove it but got under it a bit much. He seemed a bit fooled. Shealy hit it hard but the line drive seemed to stay up too long. Gload looked overmatched.
   65. CFiJ Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:48 PM (#2326143)
Remember when people thought Dice-K was going to be hitting the upper nineties?

What do you mean by "going to"?
   66. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:49 PM (#2326146)
Is the gun wonky or no?

I've got the NHK BS1 feed, and his fastball is at 148-150 km/h
   67. PJ Martinez Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:50 PM (#2326148)
Thanks, #1 Fan.
   68. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:50 PM (#2326149)
I'm supposed to be in class right now, but I think I made the right choice.

Gordo making a dog's meal of it

I've got the NHK BS1 feed

I bet that's interesting.

I have a feeling Gordon will struggle defensively this year.
   72. Jose Can Jussi Jokinen (Justin T) Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:53 PM (#2326157)
Is anyone watching this on MLB.tv? It won't connect to this game for me. But watching the Cubs pen blow goats is fun too. I may just have to watch the archive of this in class tonight.
   73. Sean McNally Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:53 PM (#2326158)

He is still due.

That was a tough pitch.
   76. Schilling's Sprained Ankiel Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:55 PM (#2326162)
That's a pretty big strike zone.v Wasn't that low?
   77. Padgett Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:55 PM (#2326164)
What do you mean by "going to"?
I haven't been watching that closely, but he seems to be in the 92-94 range. And I remember him being advertised -- albeit quite a while ago -- as having 97+ stuff. I could be mistaken, though.
   78. tfbg9 Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:55 PM (#2326165)
Nice replay they didn't show on the Papi K.
   79. manchestermets Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:56 PM (#2326167)
Luis, you just need patience. It took ages for mlb.tv to connect for me, but it did in the end and it's playing smoothly now for the first time all evening.
   80. kevin Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:57 PM (#2326169)
It could have been low but it was a well-placed breaking pitch. From my vantage point, it was borderline.
   81. Harold Reynolds: An Erotic Life (AG#1F) Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:57 PM (#2326170)
At least Drew didn't hurt himself.

it s working for me too

The pitch to david ortiz was the changeup..it was sinking as it crossed the plate. so looked low
   85. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: April 05, 2007 at 02:59 PM (#2326176)
I bet that's interesting.

Turns out the NHK people are using the NESN footage with their own broadcasters.

I don't speak a word of Japanese, so I have it swiched to Remy and Orsillo.
   86. Nick Warino Posted: April 05, 2007 at 03:01 PM (#2326178)
Dice-K looking good now. That at-bat with Buck was amazing.
   87. CFiJ Posted: April 05, 2007 at 03:03 PM (#2326184)
I haven't been watching that closely, but he seems to be in the 92-94 range. And I remember him being advertised -- albeit quite a while ago -- as having 97+ stuff. I could be mistaken, though.

He was hitting 96 on the ESPN gun during the WBC. His fastball has reached 97 (never 97+), but generally sits in the 95-96 range.

A couple things to consider: it's early, and it's cold in KC right now. And in making the adjustment to MLB and the schedule, he hasn't thrown as much as he did last year. Also, he's having some control problems, so he's obviously not airing it out. If and when he hits 97, I'm sure it'll be in a nice warm southern park sometime in July.
   88. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: April 05, 2007 at 03:03 PM (#2326186)
Ahh the standard TP Jr offence
   89. PJ Martinez Posted: April 05, 2007 at 03:03 PM (#2326188)

Dice-K gets off the mound pretty fast. His fundamentals look decent.

Buck AB: crisp curveball for a strike looking, slider for a strike looking, fastball on the outside corner for a strike looking.
