Loaiza's just the sort to be fodder for a frustrated Red Sox offense's breakout.
   2. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:26 AM (#2159215)
Your hoodoo's gone sour of late. I think you need to change your handle back.

I'm now expecting Loaiza to show up with his April fastball.
   3. AROM Posted: August 28, 2006 at 01:51 PM (#2159459)
I don't know who to root for. A's need to lose for the Angels to gain ground, but rooting for the Red Sox goes against everything I believe in.
   4. Jason Kendall's #6,530,420,771 fan (AS) Posted: August 28, 2006 at 04:07 PM (#2159587)
Well, if it helps, I never root for the Red Sox or Yankees under any circumstances. Principles are more important than potential playoff spots.

I would be astonished if the A's win the series, even with the supposedly revitalized Loaiza. I still don't think the A's are a good baseball team.

I'm glad I paid for bleacher seats today to watch Gabbard pitch.

Yeah, if you see an Asian guy in the bleachers with a Red Schilling jersey setting himself on fire, that's me.
   6. Dig!!! JMM Dig!!! Posted: August 28, 2006 at 08:01 PM (#2159734)
Hmm, now did C-Wok make a deliberate reference to Athletic Supporter's current extended name, or is he really going to set himself on fire? It's all Nightsongs to me.
   7. PJ Martinez Posted: August 28, 2006 at 08:12 PM (#2159744)
Hometown boy Carlos Pena will make his Red Sox debut tonight against his old team. He will bat 8th and play 1B.

Jon Lester has gone on the DL, and Adam Stern has gone on the 60-day DL, making room on the 40-man roster for Pena.

All this according to the Globe:

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/

Youkilis is in left and batting 4th, Hinske in RF. Where's Wily Mo?
   8. PJ Martinez Posted: August 28, 2006 at 08:13 PM (#2159746)
Also, the Sox acquired some RHP named Mike Burns from the Reds for Tim Bausher and cash.

Hometown boy Carlos Pena will make his Red Sox debut tonight against his old team. He will bat 8th and play 1B.
Wait, the Yankees have relased Carlos Pena and he's now with the Red Sox? Well, I wholly managed to miss that bit of news
   11. PJ Martinez Posted: August 28, 2006 at 09:53 PM (#2159808)
Crosby's Mormon? I had no idea.

On Pena: he had an out-clause, which he exercised since the Yanks never called him up (and then picked up Wilson).
   12. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:05 PM (#2159817)
Ortiz is a late scratch. Your FEARSOME Red Sox starting line-up:

1. Crisp, CF
2. Cora, SS
3. Loretta, DH
4. Youkilis, LF
5. Lowell, 3B
6. Hinske, RF
7. Lopez, C
8. Pena, 1B
9. Pedroia, 2B
   13. PJ Martinez Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:06 PM (#2159819)
Wow.

Where's Wily Mo?
   14. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:07 PM (#2159822)
Why is Loretta batting third? I have no @#&*()#@ing clue.
   15. PJ Martinez Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:09 PM (#2159824)
That lineup is the worst of the season, surpassing the prevoius low of just a couple of days ago.
   16. PJ Martinez Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:11 PM (#2159825)
"Why is Loretta batting third?"

Why is Alex Cora batting second? That is just a hideous, hideous lineup. Jimy-esque-- not only in construction, but in personnel. That is a late-90s Sox lineup. Where's Jeff Frye?
   17. konaforever Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:14 PM (#2159827)
Wow. What a scary line-up. And not scary in the good way. This line-up looks up to Kansas City's.
   18. konaforever Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:16 PM (#2159830)
We didn't score in the first. That's a surprise.
   19. RB in NYC (Now with Jet Lag!) Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:17 PM (#2159833)
What happened to Ortiz?
   20. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:20 PM (#2159836)
#### Al Davis. I want my beautiful field back.
   21. RB in NYC (Now with Jet Lag!) Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:20 PM (#2159838)
And what's this "On-Field Delay" Gameday speaks of?

Is Chris Wok setting himself on fire already?
   22. PJ Martinez Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:22 PM (#2159841)
Gabbard slipped on the mound on his four straight balls, and they fixed up the mound for a while.
   23. PJ Martinez Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:23 PM (#2159842)
That sentence got messed up a little, but you get the idea.
   24. Hungry Hungry Hipolito Pichardo Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:23 PM (#2159843)
That lineup is the worst of the season

Can anyone recall a worse lineup this decade? I'm going to bed.
   25. RB in NYC (Now with Jet Lag!) Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:27 PM (#2159847)
Thanks, PJ. As watching mediocre offensive teams fail away helplessly at apparently slightly less mediocre pitching isn't my idea of a good time, I'm going to bed. Night all
   26. PJ Martinez Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:29 PM (#2159850)
Gabbard saved by his defense throughout that inning, according to Trupe and the Cat.
   27. Hungry Hungry Hipolito Pichardo Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:32 PM (#2159858)
I got one: October 5, 2001, game 2 of doubleheader.

Lofton ss
Lewis lf
Nixon cf
Daubach 1b
O'Leary rf
Burkhart dh
Hillenbrand 3b
Mirabelli c
Santos 2b

Includes 3 players with <150 major league at bats, and D-lew (of the 650 career OPS) in the two-hole.

BTW - B-H Kim made the start, and Wake got the win in relief after blowing the save. El Guapo gets the save, coming on in the bottom of the 10th. Ah, the memories!

If that lineup could win, this one can too! There's hope!

Hipolito, certified optimistTM
(who alas was injured and did not pitch that game)
   28. PJ Martinez Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:32 PM (#2159859)
The "Giant" part of the Sox lineup, sponsored by Giant Glass: Youkilis, Hinske and Lowell.
   29. Hungry Hungry Hipolito Pichardo Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:33 PM (#2159861)
What's the tag for superscript? It looks fine in the preview...
   30. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:38 PM (#2159863)
Pinch-hit 3-run HR for Calvin Pickering in that game. Nice.
   31. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:58 PM (#2159880)
That was probably the only chance we'll get.
   32. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: August 28, 2006 at 10:59 PM (#2159881)
That's what 10 MPH on your fastball will do.
   33. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: August 28, 2006 at 11:02 PM (#2159882)
Apparently, belt-high and over the middle isn't a strike, because that's where the 2-0 was to Ellis.
   34. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: August 28, 2006 at 11:05 PM (#2159885)
Bobby Kielty should never bat lower than fifth against a lefty for as long as he lives.
   35. Dig!!! JMM Dig!!! Posted: August 28, 2006 at 11:14 PM (#2159889)
There's always a tinge of jealousy in Fosse's voice when he talks about the improvements in catcher's protective technology since his salad days. Sort of a combination of happiness that it now exists and hatred of the developers for taking too long.

Uncryptic!!!

If he hadn't shaved, that ball's over the wall.
   37. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: August 28, 2006 at 11:25 PM (#2159897)
So, uh, one out in the fifth?
   38. Biff, Red Sox Jinx Posted: August 28, 2006 at 11:25 PM (#2159898)
The Red Sox offense is so anemic that it made 4 outs that inning.
   39. incarnadine Posted: August 28, 2006 at 11:29 PM (#2159901)
I've never seen anyone look so little like their photo as Pedroia.

That's what a stupid-ass hit-and-run gets you.
   41. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: August 29, 2006 at 12:14 AM (#2159911)
I could do without the dropping-down-for-no-reason bit.

And I could really do without the shitty outfield that turns singles into doubles. #### the ####### Raiders.

Of course he learned nothing from Blanton on Saturday night.

It is a hair cooler in Oakland tonight than it was in Arlington on Saturday, but yeah, of course Macha didn't.
   45. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: August 29, 2006 at 12:32 AM (#2159917)
All right, but no eighth inning OK, Ken?

Yeah, Kennedy for two. White Flag® and Lefty Walk the Only Batter He Faces GuY® certainly can't be trusted with only a seven-run lead.
   51. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: August 29, 2006 at 12:57 AM (#2159925)
Oh, c'mon! We don't tune in to see Adam Melhuse.

Hahaha!
   53. Dig!!! JMM Dig!!! Posted: August 29, 2006 at 12:58 AM (#2159927)
I'm far too fond of White Flag's version of "Wuthering Heights" to call Witasick "white flag." How about "Dog Vomit?"
   54. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: August 29, 2006 at 01:01 AM (#2159928)
How about "Outright Release"?
   55. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: August 29, 2006 at 01:03 AM (#2159929)
Kevin Cash. Dustin Majewski.

Tampa Bay is a stupid organization. Toronto is a stupid organization.

Huzzah! Seven in the loss column.
   59. Dig!!! JMM Dig!!! Posted: August 29, 2006 at 01:11 AM (#2159934)
Toronto at least had the excuse of needing a spot on the 40 man for BJ Ryan.
   60. Dig!!! JMM Dig!!! Posted: August 29, 2006 at 01:14 AM (#2159937)
Since the All-Star Break, the A's offense is only 23rd best in MLB, up from 30. They're 6th in OBP though.
   61. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: August 29, 2006 at 01:18 AM (#2159939)
Mojo's back, for now at least.
