Ah, Redman. A sight for sore eyes.

I'll be here tonite, probably.

Ah, Redman. A sight for sore eyes.

And a sore sight for all eyes. League leading starting pitching after a month for the Cards. I am not buying into it, though you gentlemen might feel a bit different. How has the defence been?
   4. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 06:35 PM (#2771103)
I'm on the STtoday board and someone just posted the sports illustrated top uniform numbers of all time, has this already been posted on Primer and I missed it?

Wainwright is a legitimate ace. The rest of the rotation has been good enough to get through the lineup a couple of times and let the pen come in, TLR isn't going to leave a pitcher out once the team seems to get a grip on their pitching.

I don't think this is a top 5 rotation by any stretch of the imagination, but do think it was severly underrated last year. Looper tired in the second half last season and should be league average (95 era+) Wellemeyer has done nothing but pitch well as a Cardinal starter 18 starts in his career(all since July of last year) 91 1/3 ip, 3.84era, 79 hits, 39 walks(1.29whip) 76 strikeouts, looks like he can pitch, any Cardinal fan will be happy if he has a 4.20 era. Lohse in my opinion has looked better than his periphereals indicate and Piniero has sucked balls.
   6. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:30 PM (#2771254)
Yeah, the rotation isn't 2nd in the league good, but it's not nearly as bad as projected.

The defense has been strong, especially the OF, with Ankiel and Skip being vacuums and Ludwick, Duncan, Barton being servicable. The IF is actually stronger than last year; Glaus is not as good as Rolen, but he's leading the league right now, Izturis has been significantly better than Eck (defensively), Kennedy has made some nice plays, and Albert and Yadi are awesome.

Cards' offense had not been outstanding, the surge has been mostly pitching and defense. The D is legit, the pitching maybe not.
   7. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:39 PM (#2771263)
Weren't the Rox really good defensively a few years ago?

Albert is on a 2B tear.
   8. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:40 PM (#2771265)
Hey, Ray Lankford!
   9. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:40 PM (#2771267)
earlier today I looked up left fielders in baseball, and it isn't really a stretch to claim that Duncan could be considered average defensively.

Here is the list of leftfielders who have over 100 plate appearances this season.

Josh Willingham, Hideki Matsui, Manny Ramirez, Fred Lewis, Pat Burrell, Raul Ibanez, Matt Holliday, Andre Ethier, Johnny Damon, Emil Brown, Carl Crawford, Luke Scott, Carlos Quentin, Mark Teahan, Ryan Braun, Carlos Lee, David Murphy, Jason Bay, Delmon Young, Eric Byrnes, Gary Mathews Jr, Adam Dunn.

not a list of elite defenders, there is 23 players on that list, not sure I can find 10 guys that are clearly better defender than Duncan.
   10. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:41 PM (#2771270)
Rox are weak at RF and 3B, but are otherwise are good across the board according to BB-REF.
   11. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:41 PM (#2771271)
Ray was one of my favorite players from a few years back, but I hate that barrell over the catcher play.
   12. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2771272)
It's your boy!
   13. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:42 PM (#2771273)
My boy with a run scoring single.

Albert is limping? I know that he was limping last night also.
   14. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2771281)
Well, a number of them are really bad by rep - Manny, Burrell, Ibanez, Braun, Lee, Dunn - and some of them are really good - Sarge II, Lewis, Holliday, Crawford, Byrnes - yeah, I'd be comfortable calling Duncan at average there.
   15. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2771283)
Albert is always limping.
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2771284)
they just said that Glaus has hit the fewest homeruns during this stretch of 32 games for his career, but the most doubles he's ever hit in a similar stretch....Great he's Tino Martinez, except Tino was predictable.
   17. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:46 PM (#2771289)
Wow, hell of a play by Atkins.

Glaus is much more valuable than Tino defensively. Also, I don't actively hate him.
   18. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:46 PM (#2771288)
Glaus has to have been doing speed exercises with Molina.
   19. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:47 PM (#2771295)
I know Holliday has a good rep, but man this series he hasn't looked it.
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:51 PM (#2771299)
back to back singles.... dang but at least he threw a strike on an 0-2 count, it used to be if Looper went to 0-2 you knew he was going to waste a minimum of two pitches.
   21. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:51 PM (#2771300)
BB-REF says he's marginally above average this year, better than that in past years. His rep is excellent, though.
   22. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:54 PM (#2771305)
Wow, a double steal hit and run? Ok...that smacks of desperation, Hurdle.
   23. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:54 PM (#2771307)
scary play there.
   24. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:55 PM (#2771310)
Dan and Al's CONTINUOUS lament of various team's and player's lack of SF is amazing.
   25. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:55 PM (#2771313)
Wow, a double steal hit and run? Ok...that smacks of desperation, Hurdle.

against TLR other managers like to try and appear to be as good. They figure he makes a bunch of choices and that they are trying to keep up with him.
   26. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:56 PM (#2771316)
Dan and Al's CONTINUOUS lament of various team's and player's lack of SF is amazing.

you did hear Al say "productive outs"
   27. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:56 PM (#2771317)
Yes, and that is stupid. But whatever.
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:57 PM (#2771318)
holy ####### cow.
   29. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:57 PM (#2771320)
ANKIEL JDFGQERWIGQERIG HOLY ####
   30. Jon Egypt Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:57 PM (#2771322)
Damn, hell of a throw by ol' Roy Hobbs there!
   31. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:57 PM (#2771323)
how in the hell do you toast Willie Tavares from there? jeezus that was a throw.
   32. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 08:58 PM (#2771326)
Um, so that was amazing. One of the best OF assists I've seen recently, maybe ever.
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:00 PM (#2771331)
ankiel just singled and we didn't see it.
   34. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:00 PM (#2771335)
definately the best I've seen "live"
   35. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:00 PM (#2771336)
WTF? Why did I switch over to FSN Rocky Mtn?
   36. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2771338)
Oh, I guess I should read the screen.
   37. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2771339)
hey they killed al and dan and replaced them with chattering rockies.
   38. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:02 PM (#2771344)
definately the best I've seen "live"

No question. Edmonds had a couple, and JD Drew had a hell of a play once, but those weren't ON THE FLY.
   39. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:02 PM (#2771345)
hate to say it, but damn glad to get cardinal announcers back, those rockie guys were putting me to sleep. They ever hear of varying cadence?
   40. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:03 PM (#2771347)
I was thinking of Bo Jackson toasting Harold Reynolds.
   41. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:03 PM (#2771348)
Wow, Coors really does inflate offense.
   42. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:03 PM (#2771349)
I've never seen that for some reason, but it is legendary.
   43. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:05 PM (#2771353)
If I remember it correctly the camera angle sucked on the Bo play so that is part of the reason it isn't shown often.
   44. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:06 PM (#2771357)
A run, courtesy of Loop and Izturis!

Izturis has a SEVEN GAME HITTING STREAK?!??! ####, we might never get him off the team!
   45. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:07 PM (#2771360)
Izturis has a .350 obp, I don't mind him on the team with that obp and batting ninth.

damn nearly a homerun.
   46. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:07 PM (#2771361)
Hm, would make sense. I was thinking about MLB's tight restrictions making it hard to watch anything.

Yeah, I love Mark Redman sometimes.
   47. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:08 PM (#2771362)
I honestly don't care what slg% my catcher, shortstop or secondbaseman have, just a league average obp and above average defense and I'll be happy.
   48. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2771364)
His OBP has been good all year, but his SLG has been terrible. IF he gets that up....
   49. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2771367)
Well, can't quibble TOO much with that....but still, Izturis is SLGing .282. .282!
   50. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:10 PM (#2771370)
dang missed what they were talking about the consecutive base streak, heard the name Jeter and Thome.
   51. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2771375)
I mean, he has an above-average OBP, and his OPS+ is 70.

So this is an onslaught, right? Or does Pujols need to HR here?
   52. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2771376)
I'm not saying I wouldn't like a good overall hitter in those spots, but those are my "punt offense" spots if I'm a GM. Another hit and now Albert is up. How come I have a feeling that 4 runs won't win this game?
   53. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:12 PM (#2771381)
I'll sacrifice slg% for obp everyday of the week, especially at defense positions. I will take a .340/.300 guy over a .300/.400 guy.
   54. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:15 PM (#2771387)
At a .700 OPS OBP is way more valuable than SLG, agreed. But is it too much to ask for .350/.400? Like from, say, Ryan?
   55. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:16 PM (#2771391)
Nice catch. Sounds like there are a lot of Cards fans there.
   56. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:17 PM (#2771394)
Oh, I'll prefer Ryan personally, you know that, but I can't really "hate" Izturis if he is at least getting on base.

Ryan would be a better overall player because Izturis defense isn't that much better, stronger arm, better range, lesser hands.
   57. baseballing powerhouse (phredbird) Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:20 PM (#2771404)
i'm bummed that i missed the ankiel assist ... i'm at work.
   58. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:21 PM (#2771409)
Concur with 56.

Looper looked good there. Hope he can keep it up.
   59. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:22 PM (#2771411)
phred - It's awesome. But it will be played quite a bit tonight on Sportscenter.
   60. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:23 PM (#2771418)
if that was Jeter they would have interupted every broadcast for the greatest play of the year.....
   61. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:25 PM (#2771425)
Ludwick with a walk. If he could reduce his K's by just a little, I could imagine Cardinal fans liking the guy. (and by Cardinal fans, I mean those who would like Kevin Slaten to still be working)
   62. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:27 PM (#2771431)
What Glaus, no double?
   63. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:27 PM (#2771432)
Two nice ABs there.
   64. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:28 PM (#2771435)
Dan with an understatement. "Rick Ankiel with one of the top throws of the season"

there is no one of involved in that comment.
   65. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:29 PM (#2771436)
Yikes, people still like Slaten? I would go to the stltoday boards more, but, uh, no.
   66. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2771439)
It would be nice if the Cardinal announcers could get a man-crush on Ludwick like they have on Ankiel.
   67. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:30 PM (#2771440)
Yes, I feel confident in saying that was one of the top throws in this game.
   68. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:31 PM (#2771443)
Well, most of the fanbase has a crush on Ankiel. They could note that Ludwick is actually outperforming him once in a while.
   69. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2771446)
Yes, I feel confident in saying that was one of the top throws in this game.

top ten easily :)

Looper the RBI machine.
   70. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:32 PM (#2771448)
The Rox have got to be pretty flummoxed by this game, they have not had one break and Loop has two hits.
   71. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:33 PM (#2771449)
Well, most of the fanbase has a crush on Ankiel. They could note that Ludwick is actually outperforming him once in a while.

I'm being somewhat overly critical on them as Dan was schlupping(?) for Ludwick to get a more starts the previous two weeks.
   72. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2771453)
Ludwick has crushed the ball this year, he should be playing everyday no question.

You know who has a .400 OBP? ADAM KENNEDY.
   73. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:36 PM (#2771454)
they are complaining about LOB with a high OBP.

I can make a bet, whichever team leads in OBP will probably finish in the top 3 in LOB.
   74. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:38 PM (#2771456)
Barton has run into some bad luck, he is playing really well but 3 guys at his position are playing better and the fourth is the coach's son, who is also the "vetern" of the group.
   75. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:39 PM (#2771458)
Probably true, but the Cards are on pace to break the all-time LOB record - I looked this up in one of the Cubs threads, I think.
   76. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:40 PM (#2771459)
Not that pace means anything this early, but still.
   77. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:41 PM (#2771461)
the thing about Duncan, besides what you mentioned, is that he is the only player in the outfield that was projected to be a major league starter who hasn't ran into bad luck.

Schumaker has admitted he's a forth outfielder, Ludwick had a major injury that curtailed his development for two seasons and we all know about Ankiel. Duncan plays because he was supposed to be good and is the only "sure" thing in the lineup.
   78. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:42 PM (#2771464)
Probably true, but the Cards are on pace to break the all-time LOB record - I looked this up in one of the Cubs threads, I think.

yep I read it over there.
   79. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:44 PM (#2771467)
damn run scored, it wasn't like the Cardinals seemed to care too much to prevent it, but I'm not comfortable with only 4 run lead with the way the ball seems to be flying.
   80. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:46 PM (#2771469)
I don't really have a problem with Duncan playing per se, but he's hit the worst so far.
   81. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:47 PM (#2771473)
Barton reaches on a strikeout, you have to love that.
   82. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:48 PM (#2771474)
I feel kind of bad of the Rox, other than Albert King to end the 2nd nothing has gone right for them in this game at all.

Well, they got that run. But whatever.
   83. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2771475)
I see "King" should probably be "K-ing" to avoid confusion.
   84. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2771477)
Barton reaches on a strikeout, you have to love that.

Isn't that the 2nd time this year?
   85. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2771478)
The guys on STLtoday are loving Kennedy batting second, they feel that TLR is wrong about using a power guy in the second spot.
   86. baseballing powerhouse (phredbird) Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:49 PM (#2771479)
duncan looked scary bad last night. it was his birthday, btw.
   87. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:50 PM (#2771481)
Isn't that the 2nd time this year?

really? I don't remember sounds cool.
   88. baseballing powerhouse (phredbird) Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:50 PM (#2771482)
the fsn rocky mtn guys are talking about barton's braininess ...
   89. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:51 PM (#2771483)
I honestly think there was something weird about last night, Duncan, Hawpe, Holliday and Ankiel all had at least one play where they looked bad.
   90. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:52 PM (#2771484)
the fsn rocky mtn guys are talking about barton's braininess ...

I wonder if he's one of those absentminded professor type of players, because he's made a couple of mental mistakes so far this season.
   91. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:54 PM (#2771485)
I remember someone this year reaching on a K, thought it was Barton.
   92. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:55 PM (#2771487)
nearly an error from Pujols.
   93. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:56 PM (#2771488)
That was a weird play, hope Loop is ok.
   94. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 09:59 PM (#2771491)
Ok, that could have bad but was good. The inning, that is.
   95. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 10:01 PM (#2771495)
Albert and Molina better win the gold gloves this year
   96. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 10:01 PM (#2771497)
wow weird ass trivia question.
   97. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 10:03 PM (#2771498)
Ludwick doubles, yawn. What else is new, eh?
   98. cardsfanboy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 10:03 PM (#2771499)
Ryan with a double, he should be benched before he passes Glaus in doubles.
   99. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 10:03 PM (#2771500)
Well, Helton is obviously #1, right? No clue on the other two.
   100. Guts Posted: May 06, 2008 at 10:04 PM (#2771501)
It's really weird that Glaus, despite the 2Bs, is in the lineup for his glove.
