There is no reason for the Braves to lose this game. Therefore, they will.

Tex to the Angels for Kotchman, per ESPN - no article here yet.
   3. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 06:29 PM (#2880574)
I guess the Braves were serious about solving their long-term 1B problem. Kotchman's an intriguing player, but I can't tell whether he'll be a 105 OPS+ guy or a 120; I'm fairly sure he'll never approach Tex's value, though he may end up having a Mark Grace-ish career if things break just right. Marek (the minor league arm) is a 24-year-old AA reliever and a former 40th-round pick. Odd trade, as the Angels jettison a useful, cheap young player for a rental who won't make any difference until the postseason. Kotchman's future is a high price to pay for <80 postseason PAs from Tex and a draft pick.

As for what this means for the Cards, the Braves now have no McCann, Jones, Hudson, or Tex. I fully expect Bobby Cox to be tossed from one of the next three games.

Can't wait to see tonight's lineup. I'll bet it includes Greg Norton, Clint Sammons, Jeff Francoeur, Gregor Blanco, Mark Kotsay, and Omar Infante.
   5. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 06:45 PM (#2880600)
Looks like I'm going to have to confiscate flournoy's shoelaces tonight.

Just drop them in the bin. Cardinal fans, you may retrieve yours.
   6. flournoy Posted: July 29, 2008 at 06:46 PM (#2880605)
What do you know... I was five for six. Corky Miller is catching today instead of Clint Sammons. The only difference between the two is their age, and the fact that Miller went to a better school. Yes, Kotsay-Norton-Infante is the Braves' 3-4-5 punch this evening.

I am normally very optimistic with respect to the Braves, but this weekend finally broke me.

lordy, i'm tired ... and i've hardly done anything all day. we did have an earthquake though!
   9. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:17 PM (#2880673)
we did have an earthquake though!

Sweet!
   10. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:18 PM (#2880679)
Dan and Al are talking ridiculous #### on the Braves, kind of implying that 3/4 would be disappointing. They should be mentioning the total lack of attendence, but I guess that is no longer notable.
   11. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:19 PM (#2880681)
You in L.A., Phred?
   12. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:20 PM (#2880685)
Why are the Richmond Braves on my tv?
   13. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:22 PM (#2880692)
Dan and Al are talking ridiculous #### on the Braves, kind of implying that 3/4 would be disappointing

Yea, should be catastrophic. How are the Cards going to lose a game in this series?
   14. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:22 PM (#2880693)
Wellemeyer throws SO MANY PITCHES.
   15. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:23 PM (#2880698)
You in L.A., Phred?

I don't know what happened to phred, but he is in LA.

How are the Cards going to lose a game in this series?

They'll find a while. They're good at that.
   16. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:27 PM (#2880714)
That's about a billion two-strike hits off Cardinal pitching in the past week.
   17. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:28 PM (#2880716)
That's about a billion two-strike hits off Cardinal pitching in the past week.

I've become numb.
   18. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2880718)
Wellemeyer throws SO MANY PITCHES.

He also takes a US Postal Service Holiday weekend between pitches. Ben Sheets would have us in the fourth inning by now.
   19. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:30 PM (#2880726)
Skip hd to wade through some puddles, but he got it. Typical Wellemeyer inning.
   20. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:31 PM (#2880730)
Ben Sheets would have us in the fourth inning by now.

Yeah, but Steve Traschel would still be pitching to the leadoff man.
   21. baseballing powerhouse (phredbird) Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:35 PM (#2880742)
wellemeyer shuffles around like a gunslinger too. he's just got this john wayne physique. Yes, portia, i live in L.A. ... what about you?
   22. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:37 PM (#2880750)
San Diego. Never felt a thing.
   23. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:40 PM (#2880762)
Well, that was an odd play. Hell of a slide - I thought he was dead originally, but on the replay it looked like he missed the tag.
   24. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:40 PM (#2880764)
One of these days I'm going to keep a tally on the number of tag plays that would be overturned on the basis of instant replay.
   25. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:41 PM (#2880769)
He looked out on that replay. Cards were due for a break.
   26. baseballing powerhouse (phredbird) Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:41 PM (#2880772)
my office abuts a loading area in our building, and sometimes a truck bangs into a wall and it shakes us a little, and that's what i thought happened, but then the area kept shaking and then kind of shimmying side to side ... so we all left through the emergency exit. nobody really worried except some older hispanic secretaries from an office upstairs ... they were pretty scared.

boy, yady looked out on that.
   27. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:42 PM (#2880774)
One of these days I'm going to keep a tally on the number of tag plays that would be overturned on the basis of instant replay.

That's like 3 this week - I feel like that number would be depressingly high.
   28. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:43 PM (#2880779)
I would love to get Kelly Johnson, but I doubt the Braves would give him up.
   29. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:46 PM (#2880798)
Jeez, Wellemeyer must suck. He gave up a run to Francoeur
   30. flournoy Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:46 PM (#2880799)
Wren could probably be convinced to part with him for Mark Mulder.
   31. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:47 PM (#2880801)
This is an emphatic ump.
   32. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:50 PM (#2880812)
Gag.
   33. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:52 PM (#2880816)
Sadly, that was also a typical Wellemeyer inning.
   34. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:54 PM (#2880822)
Good to see that the Braves still have the loudest field microphones in sports.
   35. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:58 PM (#2880830)
Good to see that the Braves still have the loudest field microphones in sports.

Thats very important to the Braves. Having the biggest giant screen, the biggest truck, the biggest scary cow. I kid you not.
They are a very hick organization that way
   36. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 07:59 PM (#2880832)
I don't like facing Pujols with men on base
   37. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:01 PM (#2880836)
the biggest scary cow.

There are multiple scary cows in MLB?

I thought the Dodgers had the loudest PA - I can always hear it perfectly on telecasts.
   38. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:04 PM (#2880848)
I can't comment on the Dodgers, but the average Braves home game features more f-bombs than an episode of Deadwood.
   39. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:05 PM (#2880852)
Norton and Blanco 2-2 !!
   40. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:09 PM (#2880869)
Norton and Blanco 2-2 !!

Hitting Wellemeyer is a merit-neutral activity.
   41. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:13 PM (#2880884)
Chip sounds ok when he is toned down and talking about history like the antics of the Mad Hungarian
   42. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:16 PM (#2880896)
Where was the 1-2 to Yadier?
   43. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:21 PM (#2880909)
How long can Campillo sustain this?
98 ip, 70 Ks, 20BBs, 2.7 era

Doesn't throw a mystery pitch, and the book should be out on him. But his fastball maxes out at 85. Guess as long as his control lasts.
   44. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:23 PM (#2880912)
Walking Frenchie is the last straw. The sooner Carpenter gets on that mound, the better. For the Cardinals and my mental health.
   45. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2880913)
If he can pound the bottom and outside of the strike zone like he has tonight, he'll be Jamie Moyer. He's really had pinpoint control tonight.
   46. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:24 PM (#2880914)
Campillo's change is eating the Cards alive right now, but I agree that fastball needs excellent control. His numbers look pretty good, though - I would check his MiL numbers, but I'm lazy.
   47. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2880919)
I remember that game well. The last two walkoff GS for the Cards were hit by Miles and Eckstein. That is unlikely.
   48. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2880921)
Very good MiL numbers, pitching in the PCL especially.

Campillo's Minor #s for your pleasure
   49. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:26 PM (#2880924)
I think that was one of the hardest AFLAC trivia questions ever.
   50. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:28 PM (#2880929)
what was the question?

Here we had : who were the Cards starting pitchers in the 2006 WS? Easily nailed, even by this commentary duo.
   51. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:29 PM (#2880933)
ANOTHER two-strike hit.
   52. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:29 PM (#2880935)
So in his first pro year, Campillo pitched 4 games in rookie ball and then went immediately to AAA?

He looks good, though - very few HRs, few walks, decent amount of Ks. He may be able to keep it up.
   53. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:30 PM (#2880941)
FSN Midwest - Who was the last Cardinal player to have two triples in an inning?

The 2006 SPs is pretty easy.
   54. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:31 PM (#2880946)
So in his first pro year, Campillo pitched 4 games in rookie ball and then went immediately to AAA?

Was a stud in Mexico. Called the Mexican greg Maddux :)

That broken bat made a gut wrenching sound.
   55. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:34 PM (#2880958)
Campillo is no Mad Dog, but I kind of like the Jaime Moyer comp. That change is tough.
   56. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:37 PM (#2880970)
Skip's stupid headfirst slide into first finally works! He'll never stop doing it now.
   57. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:41 PM (#2880996)
Loath as I am to quote Chip Caray

"And Schumaker is safe at first despite his head first dive"
   58. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:43 PM (#2881005)
Nice play by Kotsay to tag there.
   59. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:43 PM (#2881007)
Nice of Kotsay to take the extra base there
   60. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:43 PM (#2881009)
TLR has reportedly implored Skip to stop doing the slide, but he won't. He's an addict.
   61. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2881013)
Gag redux.
   62. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2881014)
That was the crazy lucky. Also stupid. Dammit Ryan, it's like you're begging TLR to bury you on the bench.
   63. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2881015)
Horrible throw by 2B!

But nice idea.
   64. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2881018)
That was the crazy lucky

That was not the syntax I was going for. Where is the GC edit!!
   65. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2881020)
Ump saved the Cards a run there by getting in the way.
   66. baseballing powerhouse (phredbird) Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:46 PM (#2881021)
i gotta go. portia, i get good dodger tickets regularly. if you ever want to make the drive to see a game, let me know. i have a buddy at the sd union tribune who wants to go too.
   67. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:47 PM (#2881023)
Thank you, lousy baserunning.
   68. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:47 PM (#2881025)
Later, phred.
   69. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:48 PM (#2881027)
Kotsay undos everything by getting caught there.
   70. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:48 PM (#2881029)
Thanks, phred, I may take you up on it. Enjoy the game.
   71. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:51 PM (#2881039)
Yeah, Albert is feeling better.
   72. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:51 PM (#2881040)
Wow.
   73. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:52 PM (#2881044)
Sigh. Every Braves blunder followed by resounding punishment.
   74. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:52 PM (#2881046)
Throwing the ball back? Come on, ATL, don't be Cubs fans.
   75. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:53 PM (#2881050)
Hm, phred leaves, Albert hits a HR. Conincidence?
   76. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:56 PM (#2881065)
Another slide into 1B that works. Unusual.
   77. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:59 PM (#2881073)
Campillo's due up this inning. I'd love to see him gone from this game; he's made the Cards look awful all night.
   78. cardsfanboy Posted: July 29, 2008 at 08:59 PM (#2881081)
I'm in Richmond for work so I don't get to see the game (I should have set up my sling box)
   79. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:00 PM (#2881083)
Campillo's due up this inning. I'd love to see him gone from this game; he's made the Cards look awful all night.

Might be. Bobby has rarely let him break 100 pitches this year, and his spot will come up if we get some runners on.
   80. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:00 PM (#2881084)
Pitch count for Campillo?
   81. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:00 PM (#2881087)

Yea, the Richmond Brves are in Atlanta right now.
   82. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2881089)
89 pitches to date
   83. cardsfanboy Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2881090)
guess I get to watch the Cubs/Brewers game.
   84. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2881091)
89 for Campillo. Wellemeyer has 91 going into the Miller AB.
   85. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:01 PM (#2881092)
I'm in Richmond for work so I don't get to see the game (I should have set up my sling box)

Wellemeyer sucks, Albert is awesome, umps can't get the right call, Cards can't hit - the usual.
   86. cardsfanboy Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:02 PM (#2881099)
I figure with them being a minor league team for the braves that there would be some Brave loving on the local tv, but instead I get Nats/Phils or Cubs/Brewers.
   87. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:02 PM (#2881102)
This is it for Wellemeyer, looks like McClellan next inning. I would rather save one of our two good relievers, but maybe TLR will let him go two.
   88. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:03 PM (#2881104)
Bobby wants us to suffer.
   89. cardsfanboy Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:04 PM (#2881110)
It's good to see Albert with his power back. Yesterday was my birthday I remember the Cardinals won but that is about all I remember (next time I go out to do heavy drinking, it would make sense to have eaten more than one piece of Chicken the entire day)
   90. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:04 PM (#2881116)
6 IP, 2 Rs for Wellemeyer - not too bad, better than I originally expected. If Wellemeyer was a little more efficient, he would be a pretty servicable pitcher. But he just throws too many damn pitches.
   91. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:05 PM (#2881118)
I figure with them being a minor league team for the braves that there would be some Brave loving on the local tv, but instead I get Nats/Phils or Cubs/Brewer

Supposed to be Braves country. Anyway last year for the AAA club there. They are moving to Atlanta suburbs next year.

If the Braves are tied going into the 6th, its almost certainly a loss.
   92. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:05 PM (#2881122)

Happy birthday - I didn't see most of the game yesterday, but it was a blowout, so better than last week's games.
   93. Portia Stanke Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:07 PM (#2881127)
Note to National League: don't throw Ankiel 3-1 breaking balls.
   94. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:07 PM (#2881128)
Good work by Rick - work a BB, make Campillo throw 6 pitches. Solid.
   95. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:08 PM (#2881131)
Campillo is scared of The Ankiel!
   96. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2881134)
Terrible bunt. ####### Izturis. At least he beats out the DP.
   97. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:09 PM (#2881135)
Piniero is a better baserunner than Ankiel? Really?!

Yunel has sucked this game.
   98. Guts Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:10 PM (#2881139)
Piniero is a better baserunner than Ankiel? Really?!

Ankiel has the flu or something, and can't run; TLR otherwise would have started him against Campillo.
   99. cardsfanboy Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:11 PM (#2881143)
Ankiel is injured, his running is suspect.
   100. Bicycle RepairMan Posted: July 29, 2008 at 09:12 PM (#2881147)
Even though the Cards have 2 runs, they have had some godawful swings this game. Is that normal MO?
